Thanks for posting this! I had the same problem on my 12v DCD710. Easy to disassemble and clean. I dunked the motor in some diesel fuel, rinsed with electronic cleaner and thoroughly blew it off with compressed air. Back together and working great. Easy fix and saved me buying another one!

Sparks are from the carbon debris in between the copper poles on the commutator. This creates dead shorts and slow the motor down because you must have only a PAIR of contacts getting juice at one time.If you apply power from the brushes to three or more contacts you are effectively 'braking' the motor. That's why it slows down and smokes. So,just clean in-between the poles with a slender knife ,so gently like a surgeon,or you'll make garbage of your drill.Dressing the commutator lightly won't hurt either.Make sure neither of the brushes is chipped or squared off. Also never run a DeWalt drill on bad batteries. When voltage goes down the amps go up.And so does the heat.

Thank you for your comment. I had the same problem. The dealer told me the motor was no good and that I had to by a new one.
I just cleaned in-between the poles with a knife, cleaned the commutator with sand paper and replaced the brushes just in case. The drill is runing nicely without smoke. I will not run it anymore on a bad battery, thanks for the advice, makes sense. :-)

Try spraying electronic contact cleaner in the brushes while turning by hand. It will get any grease out. Your trigger sounds fine. If you have variable speed! If really keen dip motor in water and dishwashing liquid. New brushes as well when bedding brushes in.radio control motor break in method! It will have a little more power too.

I had a Dewalt DC987 and a DC988 that did exactly the same thing. After a tear down and commutator cleaning and new brushes they both continued to smoke. I thought o myself "screw this, let's have some fun" and held the triggers in on both.. Thinking that eventually they would burn up and die altogether, I was really surprised when one threw a massive spark and then started working properly. A few seconds later the other did the same. I have never had a problem since!

The same situation I had today with my Bosch PSR 10.8. A few days ago the motor starts to behave weird, sound, smoke, sparkes. I disassembled the accu. with a thought to replace the brushes but I found out that the brushes can't be reached easily. The only suggested repair that I found on the internet was a motor replacement. Then I read your post and start the same game ;). The few full speed runs seams to burned out the dirt and dust and the motor start regular run. Thanks.

I had exactly the same problem with my 14.4v drill.
I removed the back cover and gave the rear end a good spray with Holts electrical contact cleaner, The solvent dripped out very black and was full of heavy carbon deposits.
I then let it air-dry overnight and it's been fine ever since.

My Dewalt Drill started to smoke for 2 days. Without opening up the drill I could see red sparks where the brushes are. I just blasted it with compressor air where i saw the sparks. Now it is normal again without smoke or red sparks. I am glad I did not open it up, although temped to do so.

get a stanley knife point or use a needle to dig into them in the between armature then sand paper the armature and scratch the carbon build up between the copper slices which causes short thus you get a smell. ..the problem will be over. (simly clean the gaps between copper slices as well as sand papering them.)

You soak it in a container of thinner for a hour then let it dry for 2 hours or even overnight it cleans the motor inside motors like brandnew

This is true to some extent, but when you upgrade to battery, there is no tangled cords, extension cables, jennies, fighting for a power outlet on sight, and every time your back is turned you are plugged out, due to outlet shortage. Charge up as many batteries as you need for a days work, and every now and then look out the window as they fight over the limited outlets, in the rain, with their taped up extension leads damaged by forklifts and diggers constantly driving over them

My dewalt would run, smoke, then die down. I took the back off and blew compressed air in there while running wide open. It's fine now. Hopefully for a while!

Check the armature for pitting also check brushes and make sure there is no oil or debris in the motor.

I have a DCF887 impact driver that just started smoking after I was making 1-3/4 in holes in the 4x6. I was able to make about 20 holes before smoke started coming out. Is my impact drill ruined?

  • @dakotaboynton6581
    @dakotaboynton6581 5 лет назад +1

I was using my impact driver on the steel roof that we are doing and it's hot up there so my dewalt driver overheated and I had to let it cool down for a while and grab another. Mind you it is like 50 degrees and we are using them for the screws non stop.

I'm having teh same problem wit the exact same drill. The brushes are use so they start to sprak on the rotor. The dust on the rotor starts to fume. Just change brushes or motor iff needed ;)

I smoked mine last summer drilling concrete. It did not smoke until nine holes and two batteries later. I let it set for an hour to cool off. Came back and motor worked about half a hole smoked and shut down for good. It smelled of burnt plastic. I figured the motor is toast.

    SIMPLE FIX:
    1. Remove cover.
    2. Remove motor assembly (easily lifts out).
    3. Remove just one of the brush assemblies by prying just like in this vid.
    4. Now, with wooden toothpick and Contact Cleaner spray, remove debris in the grooves around commutator (sray, scrape, spray, scrape, etc).
    5. Clean also the commutator as you rotate it to get to the grooves.
    6. Reassemble.

      Hi there 👋
      Thanks for the advice!
      It worked great!
Yes! It was the grooves! I cleaned the commutator with sandpaper before, but ass soon as I ran the drill, it smoked and turned black again! But when I cleaned the groves with toothpick and removed tar inside, it ran without smoke and copper stay clean now!
      😉
      Thanks man!
      All Best to You!

this method fixed my 18v xrt drill it was litterly BILLOWLING out smoke, like if i held on the trigger for 10 seconds the room would be filled with smoke and the chuck was barely turning, took it apart and cleaned the whole motor from gunk with brake clean. worked PERFECT, but unlike this hammer drill my GEARS ALL fell out and it was VERY hard to put back together. so word of caution watch the gears if you dont know what u are doing they will fall out and if you dont know how to fix shit, YOUR FUCKED. trust me this is a pretty hard fix, i would say you have to have a high skill level of fixing things if the gears fall out.

The Commutator on the Armature looked pretty black in the Video. After using Contact Cleaner on the Commutator to clean it and left to dry, I would have reassembled and tried it. If the problem persisted, I would replace the Motor and install a new set of Brushes to.

  • @Iranian.Shia-kurd

Smoke means something is burning. If it smokes when it is switched on, it is because of dirt build-up in the motor. Just clean the commutator, brushes, and armature.

    • @dragan3290
      @dragan3290 3 года назад

Carby cleaner would work. But electronic contact cleaner is half the price of carby cleaner. In saying that if all you have is carby cleaner? Yes it will clean like new. You can use methylated spirits in a spray bottle too. Same as basically carby cleaner! Cheap!

Sounds like the switch is bad. Mine only works on full throttle but smokes immediately. Sometimes it will work on half throttle but temperamental. I suspect the switch and transistor soldered to the switch. I'm gonna swap with 18 volt Makita switch.cheers 👍

If it is giving a smell I wonder if it is the windings. They have a light insulation when it melts it can give a smell and smoke. How it is melting I don't know if it were me I would take it apart and check it out.

Typowy problem w tych Dewaltach. (posiadam Dewalt DW988)

Replace the motor, the armature is done... If you can take it apart completely and replace the armature, this would be another way to fix it. Alternatively you can boil the armature in oil for like 30 minutes and it may restore it, but chances are slim. I would not even bother playing with it, it is waste of time. This is old technology with NiCD batteries... not worth the effort...
