  • In this video we will be repairing one of my DeWalt 14.4V drills. It has been letting the magic smoke out from the motor area for a while now and I think the brushes may be toast! Thus, come with me and see how to take apart and repair a drill motor.

    Common problem with these drills is that grease from the gearbox or bearings gets on the commutator and mixes with the carbon dust from the brushes forming a nice conductive paste which then gets in between the commutator segments and partially shorts them out. This diverts some of the power away from the motor and the grease burns off making the smoke. Clean between the segments with a toothpick or something and give it a bit of a wash with your favorite solvent. Then you should be good to go. Try not to wash the remaining grease out of the bearings.

    I like being able to see how things are taken apart to be fixed and where to test for faults. Keep up the good work man.

    I was a foreman for my local gas company for a few years. Everything we used was pneumatic for that very reason

    *11min teardown video. No fixation here!*
    But it gives me motivation to take apart my busted drill and leave bits strewn all over the bench and calling it fixed.

      Well this is a new series and I am still working things out. The parts did not arrive on time and I needed to get the video out so I figured if I showed what part was bad that needed to be replaced and document how it all comes apart one would hope the viewer would be smart enough to put it back together but I guess the moral of this is that one should not make assumptions.

      @@misperry maybe better labelling for videos. It's troubleshooting more than fixing.

      @@misperry Three months have elapsed, and still no change to the video title. I waited for the "fixing" to happen .... nope. Now I'm just annoyed. But I wouldn't feel hoodwinked if it was titled "teardown and troubleshooting", which is also an important step, and I still would have watched.

    Using this as a reference on how to remove the motor for some weird science. I went nuts and got the cute m12 brushless tools. My drill driver, hammer drill and impact driver weight 1/3 of the old brushed dw identical to the one in the video.

    You only need to remove back cover to replace brushes and clean slots. Don't need to crack open whole drill....fyi

  • @WillsBullies
    @WillsBullies 5 лет назад +1

    Yes you can replace the whole brush

    Nice Video. Thanks for posting.
    One thing that popped out to me was that you described the wires are red and grey even though they are clearly brown and purple, which would indicate possible colorblindness. Is my guess correct?

    • @misperry
      @misperry  5 лет назад

      You guessed it. Yeah it is fun being in electronics and having colorblindness lol but you gotta work with what was given to ya

      @@misperry Very interesting. I hadn't thought about that. That makes sense. Question for ya...instead of just replacing the motor is there any viability in repairing the motor

    • @misperry
      @misperry  5 лет назад

      Yes, I don't remember if I mention this in the video but yes you can replace the brushes in the motor, which is what I ended up doing, and that will fix it without replacing the motor. I just made the video and took it apart for the first time in the video so I was unaware that I needed brushes so I did not have any ordered otherwise I would have shown changing them.
