That was a very valuable lesson. I have been binging on your videos. I love your style and aspire to paint with that clean, fresh and luminous look. Thanks
Thank you much for your hard work publishing these tutorials and for all the inspiration and information. I'm so glad that I found your channel. Something to aspire to as I begin my journey into watercolors. I appreciate your narrative and the way you explain your choices. You're wonderfully talented.
Gary, thank you for interpreting the graded wash, telling me what and how to use the technique to make painting.Thank you for showing posture, diluted colour, how hold brush and brush work, now leaving things to me is take more practice. Thank you again.
I favour raw sienna over yellow ochre. I find, like ochre it doesn't turn green with the addition of blue. Also, it has the added advantage (when dry) of allowing any added colour to be lifted easier. love the simplicity and the ultimate effect. I always find myself trying to add too much detail in the figures. Thank you for this window into your methods and technique. Off now to view another of your paintings.
Thanks Len - raw Sienna is also a great hue to use - it also works well as a glazing color because of its transparency - better than yellow ochre. Thx for sharing...
🙌🏻🙌🏻 Hello from Brazil Gary! it was a great pleasure to wake up this morning and see that there was a new video of you. I am really impressed with the way you handle the brushes, choose the right color, the precise amount of water and above all, your control over the entire work. how beautiful your paintings look. I enjoyed learning how to do the graded and transparent shadows. I am very grateful to you. 🎨🖌💙🇧🇷🇧🇷
Thank you Gary for yet another fantastic video! You put so much into these for everyone to enjoy. I've been to Venice four times and once you see that incredible city you know you will return, it never leaves you once you have experienced it.
Thank you Bhodistvas - for sharing the kind words - I absolutely agree with you - Venice is a unique treasure for artists ...I feel I am back when I am painting in my studio :)
Thank you Gary. The graded wash was perfect. I tend to be heavy handed with shadows instead of perhaps layering more and, a lessons learned today, very wet paper. Seeing your palette was also most useful. Loved the colours and will try that neutral tint and cad yellow pale for a very natural green.
Absolutely lovely, Gary. Is there anyway you can angle the camera more over your shoulder and a little closer up so those of us that want to follow along with you, can see your sketch?
Great tutorial, Gary. I glean good tips from each one I watch. The angled, graded wash to depict light is lovely. I found how you achieved it interesting. Just loosely dropping in color, allowing it to paint itself. It stands out to me that you know how you're going to handle washes before applying them, highlighting the importance of value studies. I struggle with those planning stages. I fear studies because I end up married to them and can't allow the "finished" piece a life of its own. But you've convinced me to go do some value studies!
Thx Kris Great comments I’m glad that you appreciated the angled aspect of the graded wash - there is a certain amount of knowing what’s going to happen, always a few surprises, and I try to make the most of those too. I find the studies prepare me for all of that. Thx for sharing
Hi Gary as much as I love the new format (see the palette helps a lot) it would awesome a mix of this and old format. Instead of cut some scene if you would leave them but just high speed (like former videos) the experience would be complete. But I don't want to look like a choosing beggar :) your videos are EXCEPTIONAL . They helped me a lot ! I share your videos everytime I can :)

Thanks Gary for doing so many tutorials explaining how to use graded wash. Finally I have courage enough to try one! But you don't specify what size mop brush and what is the size of the paper.
You are very elegant and talented artist Gary. It is very delightful to watch your brush strokes. Your videos are very instructive and helpful. Thanks for them. I want to ask something; how can I make perfect human figures like you? I know practise is key, but what else do you suggest? Thanks in advance 💖🌹😊
Erkin, Thx for the kind words and I smile to read your message:) About figures I recommend a couple of things one is to carry a sketchbook in the field and draw fugues when you can Two is a life drawing class where you will learn more about capturing the essence of the pose... 3 is to sketch small figures with a brush to bring that essence to watercolor..give yourself time and you we be able to paint the figures as you wish...unfortunately no shortcuts ;)
Hello Gary, You are welcome, those words are my sincere thoughts, and many thanks for your recommendations. They are very valuable advices for me, I will follow them. Wish you all the best, regards :)
Lovely painting and excellent lesson! May I ask, when you paint the details of buildings, transitioning from the light into the shadows, do you keep the same paint value in your brush as before? In other words, do the subtle differences come strictly from the darker wash being beneath the windows and doors, or do you also use a darker paint in your brush to paint them? I guess I could just try it myself, but thought I'd ask.
Shane - for the piece in this video I used a custom frame and with Matt and Plexiglas - $ 150 - for materials ...in the previous videos - a generic 16x20 about $50...

Hi Gary I really like this. Firstly you get a gold star for saying "graded" rather than the stupid and wrong "gradated" :-) I would have liked to hear a few words about the design - you sliced a portrait out of a bigger landscape scene and added in figures from a separate photo - would be good to hear the thought process behind that. Lastly I was intrigued by the sloping butchers tray palette - is that your usual setup? I don't like wells of paint myself so I might try that. Keep up the great work. Andrew
Thx Andrew - I did not dwell on the design on this one but was I using a Z as my compositional stem to take you up into the painting first to the. figures and then to the cupola. The big subject however was the graded wash which itself creates a movement - up and down - towards the figures. The figures were the main focus for me and looking for postures that expressed their animated character was important also...the palette position was born out of necessity :) - a great way to illustrate the viscosity of the paint. I have come to like it

Sunseeti, the paper is 11x14 - the size is no 6 - actually of the numbers have been worn off - so not 100%

Typically I use the same mix - for ease but often re touch based on the final dry - sometimes I actually go darker in the sunny areas
Very helpful! Thanks!
Is it worth it to use 300 Lb paper?
Sadly the number 8 Loew Cornell Round has been discontinued. I really wish they would bring it back.
Maravilloso!
