Advancing with Watercolor: Technique- Luminosity with Graded Washes
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 7 июл 2024
- I am returning to the technique of graded washers again this week. I revisit the process of creating a graded wash and with the intent of creating luminosity in the Square. it can create luminosity in the painting. I’m using three large washers to create luminosity, and light and bounce in the shadows. The scene is from a recent trip to Venice and the compo San Msrgarita. It’s late afternoon and friends and family are gathering for some cecchetti or venetian tapas. Of course this is accompanied by wine and a lot of conversation. Dinner usually follows!
This area in Venice still has the feeling of a neighborhood - a relaxed feeling, full of families, wonderful interactions and many stories to be painted

Gary was the guy whose videos got me started in watercolor. Been watching this one as well as others for years. I have attempted so many studies of these paintings in these videos, and haha of course they never looked quite like his. Now I am noticing the level of subtle nuances that really make the painting shine... Took me YEARS to know what to look for and see it!
Im glad you can see these qualities Brad!
only 52 thousands? man, there should be million, its an essence of impressionism in 20 minutes. just great
What a watercolor wizard you are Gary. Beautiful work indeed.
Every time I watch it , I find it so beautiful.
"Expressing the joy while doing this marks"... I think that that alone sets apart experienced and confident painters like you and others from the rest. I don't want to be harsh on "the rest" since even the more renowned painters were once a member of that tribe. Back to the brushstrokes, is massive the difference from a hesitant, repited, even corrected brushstroke, from an assertive one that was put there and left there. I myself am such a believer in this aspect (that is not technical but psychological) that i "practice confidence" by doing abstract paintings using 100% confident marks. Why abstract? Because that way I can practice the feeling of not giving a "s--t" for the final output. My theory is that eventually the confidence skills will join whatever other more figurative painting skills i train. Sorry for the long almost out of topic message, but i do feel that this excerse of focusing in doing confident marking as a separated skill is helping me tremendously so i want to share this in case someone feels like too tied by figurativism and his work looks hesitant. Try to pick and incorporate at some extent "HOW" this expert painters as Gary , Joseph, Alvaro, etc apply the pigment. You can learn a lot just seeing them in action even without audio!! Now ok, i did finish 😁😬. Edit: so now i just watched the whole video and wow this turned up specially amazing imo. Those two fellows with the dog are priceless!

Thanks for the feedback - I gave a comment to a student - and have since used this frame of mind many times.”even when you do not know what you are doing - pretend that you do..” this effected the quality of her brush work in a positive way...
thats magnificent. not to mention that its just so much more beautiful than reference
Thank you - the painting is more evocative? thx
It's amazing how a darker wash makes a fairly dark previous wash luminous, and also, when I see the whole picture with a general view, people appear wearing different colours, but taking a closer look to your area of interest, its basically two colours with different intensity..beautiful.
Debatra thank you - its a great comment
This is not easy as it looks.... Awsome, lovely, beautiful, heavenly and what not😘😘
Thank you so much 😀
Gary, I love your respect for strong light. This was helpful. I wanted to watch how you stroked the lines in the pavement tiles. They look so spontaneous. Your free flowing style is inspiring.
Glad it was helpful! - short answer practice over and over - it's the best way
Thank you Gary. Adding these videos is really very generous of you. Always appreciated.
Thanks Clive - I appreciate the support :)
Wait!!! No one can paint this well!!! Powerful subjects and incredible skill, Mr. Tucker.
Love this style of painting!
A master piece!!
I was attracted to the thumbnail and enjoyed the video. The picture is at once lively and atmospheric. You make it look so easy.

Brilliant!
That is beautiful it is amazing to watch thank you 👍
Wow! Dear Mr. Tucker, I am absolutely honored and feel so very fortunate to have found you today for the very first time. I don't quite understand why I haven't come across one of your tutorials in the past many months that I have been following those artists whose work I have admired and struggled to emulate. Amongst my favorites are Paul Clark, Titus Meeuws, Maria Raczynska, Joseph Zbuvik, Niaz Hannon, Emily Olson, Alice Campbell, Sunis Linus di, James Gurney, etc. Yes, so many talented masters, each unique in their own style and genre. But, from each of them, I feel privileged to take just a bit of knowledge that each are so generous to share as well as their thoughts and the emotions that bring the magic of watercolor to them.
I suppose it shall remain a mystery as to why I haven't found you until today.....but, in this one video, your artwork, your style, your manner of guiding the student from beginning to end of the reasoning behind each determined and planned stroke and above all the true emotional feelings that the pure magic of watercolor evoke in your heart have completely won me over.
Needless to say, I am a very happy new subscriber. I intend to spend the rest of the day trying to figure out where best to begin watching your videos so that I can maximize the learning that I so look forward to soaking up from your brilliant artistry and mentorship.
Thank you ever so much for your extraordinary generosity of both your time and your spirit. 👩🦳🖌️🙏
Many thx Deborah - happy to be mentioned in the same breath with those great artists
Truly a master, you are!
Beautiful work! Thank you for sharing and for including your list of materials:)

Thank you Doug - appreciate the encouragement
Very helpful. I will never be able to paint that complicated scene, but all your instruction is valuable to beginners.

Very nicely done.
The way you build up your paintings is absolutely fascinating to me! I love watching the process.
Thank you for another wonderful video Gary.
Magnificent work, very professional and at its utmost beauty. Thank you Gary 🌹👏😊
You and Shibasaki San have been my teachers. I am from an island in the middle of the indian ocean and its a priviledge to have such high quality walkthroughs. I have participated in competitions locally and won prizes. I have even been in the local newspapers where I mentioned you as teacher!
I want to say thanks and keep it going as long as you can. God bless!
I am teaching myself from his videos and will reference him as teacher too. This comment is wonderful 😁
would like to thank you for your excellent Technique, absolutely fascinating.
It looks stunning! The painting feels more lively with side stories.
Thank you!
Espetacular,um gênio da aquarela.
Muchas gracias .
I Love this work!!
Gary, we all “get a lot out of your videos” each and every time you paint. Thank you. I’m still sharing with all of my students, so much so, I’ll probably lose them as students. Not really. We all enjoy your work and your teaching methods.
Sally, thx so much for sharing I appreciate your taking the time to share...:)
Wow, love the contrasts you've achieved in this painting.
🙏
Lovely work
Love the way you paint, I just recently got into water colour and I am learning so much from everyone that has more experience. Beautiful painting! Thank you!
Wonderful.......looks like something a veneician master has done....👏
Amazing, i learned alot, Thanks Gary
I loved this video and your calmness . Hearts from Dubai 🤍
Es excelente. Aprendo mucho con usted. Gracias.
Soy relativamente nueva en esto de la acuarela, 6 años. Pero he logrado algunas cosas. Y sus videos me ayudan a comprender el manejo de esta técnica. Un verdadero maestro.
Gracias.
Muinto Gracias la acuarela es mi Algeria y mi vida!
brilliant!
Thanks Gary. Better explained here!
The PDF are fantastic, I have them all. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge. Enjoy every video
Thank you, Gary. I really appreciate your generosity in sharing your techniques and methods. Although our paintings will aways reflect our own personalities, your instructions give us a way in to that illusive "professional" look which I hope to acquire having already missed out on 40 -70 years of dedicated practice! You are a treasure.
Love it
I spent this past July traveling in England, Spain, France and Italy, and I often thought to myself, "oh gosh, there is another Gary Tucker painting"; Mediterranean sun and shadows, and animated scenes such as this. Profoundly inspirational, so sincerely 'thank you'.
What a wonderful trip - I am sure it’s inspiring some beautiful art work...
Great artist!
The sense of low afternoon sunlight is magical Gary. Thank you again for a great tutorial. One thing hit home this time and that's how I often don't use enough pigment! It was easy to see just how much you picked up. Your strong colours did fade, as you say. We often panic when a tone is too dark. Lesson learned - again.
Thanks Barbara - I am happy the palette view was helpful to communicate this - it’s one of the things I find difficult to impart to students...
Love from Bangladesh 🇧🇩🇧🇩❤️
Absolutely stunning work! I'm glad to have found it, will definitely rewatch to paint along
many thx!
i always hope I can paint like that... this is such a beautiful work. Just looking at you brings me into the painting!
Congratulations to make the colors dance
Great work. Thanks for sharing. Your commentary is so unique.

It's very Beautiful
Fantastic painting, thanks for sharing your techniques, very helpful for me as a beginner.
I’m glad these videos are helpful Jarry
I absolutely ADORE this picture, and I've been watching the video several times now. Can't seem to dare to start painting... figures are so hard to do and I think I will fail to capture this incredible luminosity... I just need to gather up the courage!! Thanks, Gary, for your wonderful teaching.
Thx for your kind words - they give me inspiration to keep on!!
@@GaryTuckerArtist you have to keep on always... you are a true artist! very very inspiring to me. Best regards from Berlin!
Terrific video. The painting as you begin doesn't resemble even remotely the final painting. It appears magically towards the end. Quite simply a result of your imagination and accumulated skills. Thanks Gary!
Gary - it's amazing to me how your first background wash for the buildings appeared almost dull in intensity when you laid it on, but as you developed the darker washes, it became luminous. The magic of watercolor in the right hands!
Maria
Magic indeed - watercolor seduces me again and again...
Thx for sharing your impressions
Best
Gary
