Gary, I love your respect for strong light. This was helpful. I wanted to watch how you stroked the lines in the pavement tiles. They look so spontaneous. Your free flowing style is inspiring.

Gary was the guy whose videos got me started in watercolor. Been watching this one as well as others for years. I have attempted so many studies of these paintings in these videos, and haha of course they never looked quite like his. Now I am noticing the level of subtle nuances that really make the painting shine... Took me YEARS to know what to look for and see it!

It's amazing how a darker wash makes a fairly dark previous wash luminous, and also, when I see the whole picture with a general view, people appear wearing different colours, but taking a closer look to your area of interest, its basically two colours with different intensity..beautiful.

Wow! Dear Mr. Tucker, I am absolutely honored and feel so very fortunate to have found you today for the very first time. I don't quite understand why I haven't come across one of your tutorials in the past many months that I have been following those artists whose work I have admired and struggled to emulate. Amongst my favorites are Paul Clark, Titus Meeuws, Maria Raczynska, Joseph Zbuvik, Niaz Hannon, Emily Olson, Alice Campbell, Sunis Linus di, James Gurney, etc. Yes, so many talented masters, each unique in their own style and genre. But, from each of them, I feel privileged to take just a bit of knowledge that each are so generous to share as well as their thoughts and the emotions that bring the magic of watercolor to them.
I suppose it shall remain a mystery as to why I haven't found you until today.....but, in this one video, your artwork, your style, your manner of guiding the student from beginning to end of the reasoning behind each determined and planned stroke and above all the true emotional feelings that the pure magic of watercolor evoke in your heart have completely won me over.
Needless to say, I am a very happy new subscriber. I intend to spend the rest of the day trying to figure out where best to begin watching your videos so that I can maximize the learning that I so look forward to soaking up from your brilliant artistry and mentorship.
Thank you ever so much for your extraordinary generosity of both your time and your spirit. 👩‍🦳🖌️🙏

"Expressing the joy while doing this marks"... I think that that alone sets apart experienced and confident painters like you and others from the rest. I don't want to be harsh on "the rest" since even the more renowned painters were once a member of that tribe. Back to the brushstrokes, is massive the difference from a hesitant, repited, even corrected brushstroke, from an assertive one that was put there and left there. I myself am such a believer in this aspect (that is not technical but psychological) that i "practice confidence" by doing abstract paintings using 100% confident marks. Why abstract? Because that way I can practice the feeling of not giving a "s--t" for the final output. My theory is that eventually the confidence skills will join whatever other more figurative painting skills i train. Sorry for the long almost out of topic message, but i do feel that this excerse of focusing in doing confident marking as a separated skill is helping me tremendously so i want to share this in case someone feels like too tied by figurativism and his work looks hesitant. Try to pick and incorporate at some extent "HOW" this expert painters as Gary , Joseph, Alvaro, etc apply the pigment. You can learn a lot just seeing them in action even without audio!! Now ok, i did finish 😁😬. Edit: so now i just watched the whole video and wow this turned up specially amazing imo. Those two fellows with the dog are priceless!

    Hello Gary 👋🏻👋🏻🇧🇷
I am completely delighted with this work of yours.
Since I started watching your videos, one better than the other, I noticed in this last one a singular sensitivity with the scene: a unique moment in Venice, very remarkable for you, who, with the skill of a true master, transferred this intimate feeling to paper.
    This is ART, isn't it?
Moreover I want to say that I have learned a lot from your lessons with regard to brush strokes, colors, graded, lights and shadows, in short, I try to capture every image and every word, every detail of yours throughout the videos that I watch repeatedly. I'm fascinated, as I always was for the watercolor too.

      Oops sorry Sonia a typo
What I meant was if my feeling, or joy in the moment while in Venice comes across through my painting - then I feel I am successful... for me painting is about communication and reaching the other person through painting..sorry for the confusion

First time with one of your vids, and I really enjoyed it. You're obviously a very good painter, but I have to say I particularly appreciated the quality of the narration - very direct with exact language. I'll watch more of your vids and I just subscribed. I watch a lot of watercolor vids - the good ones (like this) seem to diminish the drawing aspect, which I think is so important. That base drawing was just great, and on some level I think it is as least as important as the painting itself - a lot watercolor masters like yourself seem to be modest about this (or something), but I always want more discussion of this. Thanks again.

I really appreciate your comment--this is my first video of his as well. I watch four or so other painting channels, and his narration is so specific and full of feeling that for a moment I despaired that watercolor is even more impossible than I thought! The others make it look like their decisions weren't specifically made, but rather than the effects just happened.

      Thx for the kind words
I’ve found an important key is to memorize your subject....to the point where you do not use the reference so much....like the musician who plays the music by heart....

Gary Tucker I play guitar , so understand the analogy, I’m improving, and not being afraid to spoil a picture, and being prepared to make mistakes, is helping. One thing you said Gary in one of your vids, was that “ the reference can become a distraction.

muted spark I agree, I find the same thing. I’m learning to practice and just go for it, and if it comes out bad, we’ll, ce la vie. I’m pleased with my progress. I’ve done many detailed watercolours, but felt very tight as you say. The looser style, which I love, draws me in to the painting, it takes me there mentally, thus my mood and emotion are affected. I love art for this reason. I painted since I was a boy, I’ve never lost the desire for painting. Things have just crowded it out. Now I’m older, 57, I want to knuckle down and focus. Not because I have to, but because I want to. I love Gary,s work, and manner. I’d love to meet and talk with him. His art takes me to a nice place. Regards Shane.
