Zbukvic is the John Singer Sargent of watercolor. He does not tarry on needless all-over details. He sets the structures and knows exactly where and how to IMPLY detail. Just a dot, dash or stroke. Genius.
John Singer Sargent was the John Singer Sargent of watercolor! Seriously though, I can see the similarities between the two. Though I would say that Zbuvic has a bit more abstraction. If only Sargent was more serious about his watercolors!
*_This is probably one of the most inspiring watercolor tutorials on RUclips, watching one of the greatest living water colorists in the world display his talent._*
I've watched this video probably over 20 times now over the course of 7 years. never get sick of it. Thank you Graeme for doing what you do and your genuine reactions.
Thank you Baris. Its comments like yours that make me happy about starting CIYL from the beginning. it has been a very tough but inspiring journey. There is more to come , Graeme
I think I've watched this three times over the years. RUclips thought that wasn't enough and put it back into my recommendations again.... and, of course, I watched it again!
He is easily one of the best Watercolorists in the world. A lot of watercolorists nowadays try to imitate his works/style. He has inspired many other artists.
If this doesn't inspire you to pick up your brushes nothing will! Listening to Joseph talking about his processes, watching his painting grow and hearing his comments is instructive and fascinating - thankyou for this!
It's been 10 years, and this is still probably the best watercolor tutorial period (three amigos is up there too!) I find myself coming back to it time and time again. Thanks Gramme and of course Mr.Joe!
I don't know if watching him work brought tears to my eyes but there's something inspiring and amazing at watching a talented and highly skilled artisan perform at their best.
This guy is the best watercolour artist I've ever seen. I think a lot of an artists skill comes from being able to get a good painting from a subject normal people would find mundane. They can see things in a totally different way.
zenoist2 He is easily one of the best Watercolorists in the world. A lot of watercolorists nowadays try to imitate his works/style. He has inspired many other artists.
opan pro....yeah almost every watercolorist doing this kind of paintings is trying to copy his or Alvaro's style. Some are just plain rip off to be very honest.
I have my own painting channel, and I am devastated to get thumbs down. And people give this one also thumbs down??? are they blind?? Joseph is a genius!!
Where abouts do you live Edo. I am expanding CIYL across the world now to different countries and with other hosts as well and I am looking for other Artists to work with in varying countries to get the series onto other TV channels. Would you be interested in having a talk?, Graeme
I'm looking for enthusiastic Artists to approach TV stations in the various countries they live in, in regards to either selling the series to a distribution agent or TV channel, or to just get the series onto public TV stations in those countries. If you are interested send me your email address and I can send you some more information. I have filmed 250 Artists in the last 8 years and would give you a good percentage if you were to get in deals in the Netherlands, Graeme
he makes it seem so effortless, like painting these amazing pieces is no harder than taking a breath. when he laid in the red on the tail lights i couldnt believe how RIGHT that looked even though the left side of my mind said "no no no thatll never work". just incredible, talk about inspiring.
un virtuoso, de lo mejor que he visto. Gracias por mostrar como se hace profundidad, luz, color ...ese color de las luces de los autos que notable!! gracias otra vez
Prekrasan rad, kao i sva druga dijela, ovog sjajnog majstora. Veliki sam obožavatelj iako sam tek nedavno otkrila tu ljepotu i talent ovog virtuoza kistom.
This was the first 'Colour in Your Life' I ever saw and after having a bash with a brush myself, now sit here still shaking my head saying 'WOW' throughout. Very much the Master.
My, God, he's a genius !!!! I'm utterly amazed at how fast he works and every mark is perfectly placed. I drive myself crazy with "perfection" which never looks natural. This is a real inspiration. Thank you so much for uploading it, Graeme !
You gotta be loose, you must let the water be the master. This is what I’ve learned and it’s oh so important. Don’t strive for perfection, but trust in your own eyes and instincts
I have just started to paint with water colours. If anyone needs inspiration to try doing something in their lives this man has just done it for me at the age of 58 Mr zbukvic thank you so much. You are a true master of your craft and I have no doubt you will be admired for your skills for many many generations to come. Thank you Sir for allowing me the privilege of watching you work. Graeme in the Uk
Mr. Stevenson, thank u so much for ur efforts bringing art to the masses & exposing us all to such wonderful painters. I had been drawing since a child (im 50) & then painting in acrylic (stylistically oil but in the acrylic medium to work in a small space with limited ventilation) & thought I knew what watercolor was. I had that old impression of an impossible medium (get it right or start over) & subject matter that basically included red barns & green grass. How wrong I was lol. Then……first……I found ur channel. Still enjoying the oil painters & working from dark to light, broken edges, looking for the moments of abstraction, etc. One night I decided to find a little variety, so I watched ur watercolor uploads. Alvaro Castagnet & Joseph Zbukvic. Oh my gosh!!! I was absolutely blown away, like seeing magic. I pursued their work, their images online & other content available……I couldnt stop, I was hooked. I am thrilled to say that I attempted watercolor & had a blast!!! I converted my set up & havent looked back. Now I can even paint plein air when I choose. But most of all, I absolutely love the balance between unpredictable wet flowing water & paint with drawing & also using the abstract realism as an approach to representational work. U have absolutely changed my life. Thank u I will alway support ur efforts & will never forget the moment u lead me to my passion.
Once a while I come back to watch this video, I found it helpful everytime I watch it. And I had been doing this for two years ! This is how powerful Joseph is !
I honestly do not have a word for this extraordinary masterpiece. I am speechless. Step by step, the master craftsman at his work! Bravo! Semper Fidelis
Learning from the Masters...Zbukvic,Castagnet,Pekel Hyatt...Thanks TO ALL FOR SHARE YOUR TECHNIQUE!!!Enjoying so much trying to emulate to ALL OF YOU!!!👾🛸
Hi, this is Paulo Franchini from São Paulo, Brazil. Thank you very much for this remarkable class with talented Mr Joseph Zbukvic. His technique is awesome and I have learned a lot with it.
Graeme Stevenson (Colour in Your Life) I am happy to say, I will be able to meet Joseph in Fallbrook California for his demo! I was unable to make his class last year, it was completely booked!
i personaly thinks he is the best, there is no one better, the mood and atmosphere in his paintings are just out of this world.thank you sir for what you are doing.its realy mine blowing and we can watch it for free.thank you.
I saw this demo by Mr Zbukvic about 2 years ago and was completely blown away. If it was up to me you would be knighted Sir Joseph for your amazing contribution to art in general and watercolour painting in particular. Graeme, please please post more such videos with the inspirational Joseph. Thank you so much for posting this video.
WOW, hate using that word but this man is mind blowing. The best thing I'm taking away from this video, is to paint with confidence, do what feels right to you the painter.
Graeme I had to come back to watch again after a long time since I first viewed this post. I think some of the dislikes are more about style preferences rather than a rejection of Joe's work in total. I like what he does, not high art but fantastic skill and craft. He's a master for sure. Thanks again for this post and the inspiration it gives me in my own work.
just fantastic, so simple. So interesting the way Joseph ads suggestive strokes to his photoraphic image first - fabulous. - then paints from that - WOW
Connie Dee Hi , yes he is amazing. We will have many more great Artists over time, so I hope you enjoy them all, dont forget to tell other folks about us. This only helps us to keep all of this going for everyone out there, hope all is well, Graeme

Un super pédagogue.Merci maître.
I think I've watched this three times over the years. RUclips thought that wasn't enough and put it back into my recommendations again.... and, of course, I watched it again!
The man the myth the legend... and Joseph Zbukvic
He is easily one of the best Watercolorists in the world. A lot of watercolorists nowadays try to imitate his works/style. He has inspired many other artists.
As a person learning watercolor and exploring RUclips for tutorials, instruction, inspiration, etc I see many many people imitating this exact style.
“Technique doesn’t harm your painting but the lack of confidence “ >>>> whole lessons on youtube ❤
Going to be on my panel
If this doesn't inspire you to pick up your brushes nothing will! Listening to Joseph talking about his processes, watching his painting grow and hearing his comments is instructive and fascinating - thankyou for this!
Some people just have it. What a painter.
It's been 10 years, and this is still probably the best watercolor tutorial period (three amigos is up there too!) I find myself coming back to it time and time again. Thanks Gramme and of course Mr.Joe!
