This is a really good chance for people to see how to do a first wash to create feeling and color. I think that many people do not understand first wash, they just start painting away. I hope you have a lot of viewers on this one and then next one, too. Bravo!
Gary, thank you so much for the wonderful resource you've put on youtube. Your tutorials are some of the best I've come across and I've learned so much from your channel. Thank you.
This is like magic to me. I watched the whole video. I paused several times. The end result is like the creation of the universe. I understand it happened, I just don’t understand how. From blotches of discoloured water you created brilliant art. I saw it with my own eyes, yet I still can’t believe it. WOW.
Gary, Thank you especially for mentioning, "The paper is dry now..." In instructional videos teaching watercolor technique, it's usually impossible to tell how much time has lapsed between stages of a painting in progress. The drying time of various washes is important for a student a watercolorist to master. Great instruction here.
Wow! I’m a relative beginner to watercolors but I’ve been dedicated to learning new techniques - this is a wonderful tutorial and I can’t wait to try it out! Thank you
I love how you use the initial washes to create the areas of light and shade and to give the overall mood of the painting. As a beginner I find it very difficult to paint in this loose style. I am very literal! I will continue to practice. Your videos give me inspiration, thank you Gary
Thank you Gary for your excellent tutorial. I love the double speed film rate with your straight to the point narration. It keeps my attention and i have learned so much in a short space of time. Perfect!. Peace and love from the UK .
Your tutorial is exactly what I have been looking for - it does explain this perfect technic and at the same time it inspires me like hell, thank you for that !!
Wow 🤩. I have fallen in love with your inspirational paintings - you just guide the viewer’s eyes with play of colours and hues, and they do the rest i.e. visualise the real picture. What an art or should I say, what a magic show !!
Hi Gary, your approach to watercolors is what made me made me pick up watercolors again, and with much more intent and purpose than ever, and my understanding of the watercolor medium and the love for it is growing stronger day by day, thanks to such amazing painting demonstration and insightful commentary as this one. Thank you.
I hope to learn by watching and listening your working! I have some photos from my trips over years and like to paint some of them! So far I have two watercolour exhibitions of my own and I wish I could have an exhibition of the paintings of my travelling pictures.
I word in many different medium but street scenes in water colour seem to be so much harder for me. Thank you so much for explaining and really ensuring the viewers/student gets some in sight to your thought process. I am very impressed and will go to see your website again many thanks.
I am happy I found this tutorial. It was wonderful to watch the wash applications turn into such a wonderful painting. I need to practice being looser and freer with washes. Many thanks
@ Dan Thomas... that's the nature of watercolor... it takes a little getting used to when you're starting out in watercolor... I remember years ago one of the books I had on painting watercolors had the 50% rule which was that your paint would dry 50% lighter than when 1st applied
excellent! you are putting into words so many things i think about but i can't articulate so clearly in my mind. Every time i watch one of your videos you help my brain to articulate those ideas and techniques. Thanks a lot!
Superb! Wonderful advices about working with watercolor and creating the subtle atmospheric light bounces, I can’t wait to put in practice your advices...Thank you!
Hello Joanne, how are you doing my dearest, I hope you don’t find my message scary, my name is Jef and am just looking for someone to talk to, I have been to so many dating apps, but too many fake friends, you’re looking so adorable and they is something very special about you that I can’t seems to understand till I get to know you more, I hope and pray you’re not taken beautiful one?
I realized here that one of my many mistakes or problems was using watercolour pans which have their place but make it difficult to produce the dry brush effect on a larger brush. I realized this when I tried the colour drill practice before an (unsuccessful) attempt at reproducing the effect with the following 'Autum's Glow'. I shall persevere with many thanks for your careful, thoughtful and encouraging instruction.
Love this tutorial and the painting is so good. It reminds me of a book called Colour and Light by Jean Haines. Not the same topic, but the painting reminds me of what she talked about regarding showing light.
I love how you have taken quite a flat looking photo that you have simplified and then exagerrated the colours and light to create a really wonderful painting.
Very nice, the vertical version seems more intimate for some reason while the demonstration painting with the figure pointing keeps pushing my view out and then the shadows draw me back to the focal point again. Really clever.
Thanks Gary , informative and inspirational as always. Your time and efforts are appreciated from your "Football Stadium" full of Fans.... :) take care!
Which is warmer? A yellow blue or a red blue? I really struggle to understand the warmth and coolness of blue. Thank you Gary. You are so kind to share!
Let me rephrase my question. Between ultramarine and pthalo, which do you consider to objectively (if possible to be objective) to the be the warm and cold? This article lends great insight, but Im in love with you and want your opinion only Gary! GARY. GARRRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY sharonhicksfineart.com/blog/57475/warm-or-cool-ultramarine-blue-vs-thalo-blue-
To my eyes ult blue = warm, pthalo cold cold cold - though as an approach to painting I don’t chase after the perfect hue - or even accurate color for that matter - I will check out the link...thank you for sharing
Thank you for this video. When you painted the figures you had a dark paint but later you used a lighter paint on the faces and arms. How does one paint a lighter color on top of a dark color? I assume it needs to dry in between. I love Paris scenes. I tend to be very detailed when painting similar scenes but I like how you simplified it to focus on the people. Great lesson.
I'm learning watercolor painting. So far I have got hang of first wash but I often mess up second wash and can't decide which details to show and which to omit.
I have been watching your videos quite often. I like them very much. Thanks for sharing with us. Would you please tell me what brand of the short handle brushed you are using. I want to buy them. Thanks again.
You are very generous and open to let us in on your "secrets". Thank you for sharing your process with us!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts
no secrets here - I believe in complete transparency...;)
Paris est toujours plus beau avec votre travail. Merci

Right!
At last, a painter that describes what and why he does things in detail. It's rare to find a natural artist/ teacher. Really glad I've found you.

One of the masters of back lighting....and a glowing illusion, among other things.
Wow 🤩. I have fallen in love with your inspirational paintings - you just guide the viewer’s eyes with play of colours and hues, and they do the rest i.e. visualise the real picture. What an art or should I say, what a magic show !!

Super tutorial and painting. Thanks for mentioning the colours as well. Amazing what can be created with so few, I keep having to tell myself that.
I word in many different medium but street scenes in water colour seem to be so much harder for me. Thank you so much for explaining and really ensuring the viewers/student gets some in sight to your thought process. I am very impressed and will go to see your website again many thanks.

Thanks so much Garry! I tried it and came out fine. Learnt a lot in the process.

Thanks Claire - I agree with you, and say again - Perseverance opens all doors!!!
First, you show me the picture and explain it in detail, so it's very helpful to know what to emphasize and what to omit Thank you.

Thank you! Neil Cheers!
Love to watch your videos, you re so talented.
Just brilliant, I could actually grasp your teaching of the graded wash. Thank you
Love this tutorial and the painting is so good. It reminds me of a book called Colour and Light by Jean Haines. Not the same topic, but the painting reminds me of what she talked about regarding showing light.
Thank you for your insight of your paintings, nobody rarely does that.. thanks again
Thank you Dinesh for the thoughtful comment
What an amazing painting scene!
I love how you have taken quite a flat looking photo that you have simplified and then exagerrated the colours and light to create a really wonderful painting.
Thx Emmanuel - the power of our imagination !

Thx for the question - you can add a color on top of a dark in its very thick, or if it’s mixed with a bit of white...
