So the last time I viewed this video was over a year ago. And since then I have been learning so much from your Internet demonstrations and teaching that I want to say thank you again. It is amazing the work that you put in to helping us to learn how do use watercolor.
Firstly, thank you again. I realized how an artist looks at a photo of reality. Someone like me was already planning how to tackle the perspective of that window and its structure, the window on the left etc, etc. The secret is to whittle down everything into the chosen shapes. The important shapes. You even altered the Interior, figures etc. We all need to understand how to tackle a photo and judge whether it's valid or not. As always, the fascination of the light in your paintings comes out. This is what I'd love to achieve. Beautiful painting. I decided to paint along and be really bold with the colours. Not bad, this time I've learned how important contrast is, and how important it is to keep in mind the FADING of colours. I know I need to do my own work, but this was valuable. It won't be binned ( trashed) LOL
thx Barbara - I am using this series to give everyone some thoughts on how to interpret photos - I am glad you picked up on this. When not in lock down I visit these coffee shops for there charm and to get new ideas
I never used tonal sketches, but I started creating them after watching your instruction videos, it is not only a lot of fun to experiment with different kind of renderings but it also gives you so much confidence in the subject...I had not realised the sketches were so important in the overall proces
Gary, your generosity with your time, when one could almost be forgiven for becoming self-absorbed due to the virus, is inspiring. And the way you render light in a subject just makes me want to get back into my studio. Thank you, and greetings from Australia.
Thx Peter - It has been therapeutic in a sense to put these videos together and strengthen ties across the world through painting. I hope you will fallow through and make it back to the studio
Hi Gary, just another fantastic video, I do hope you enjoy making them as much as I do watching them and learning. thanks again for sharing your amazing talent. cheers.
Brilliant tutorial. This totally explodes any preconceived notion I ever had about painting a watercolor. It makes total sense to build the layers of washes starting with large light and dark fields, and then working in by painting details after the lights and darks have been applied. This painting has echoes of Hopper, whose work I have always adored. The tutorial also helps me understand the process of great railroad watercolorists like Ted Rose and Howard Fogg. Very inspiring video!
I too am a big fan of Hopper as a master with shape and design - the quality of his cityscapes - He is also a master of catching light - the loneliness is also something that intrigues me about Hoppers works...
Gary, that is a great demo. You created so much space and mystery with that technique. Looking forward to seeing more work on interiors. And I will look around at the interiors that I am stuck in with new inspiration.
Thx Theresa, We are seeing a lot of interiors these days - especially the studio...I think they are so interesting as an a way to convey light and emotion. Hope all is well with you Best Gary
This is the 3rd video of yours that I have watched and I want to say how wonderful they have been. I am trying to advance in watercolour and despite all the wonderful tuition on RUclips, have struggled to find really good tuitions, until I found yours. I loved the graded wash ones very much, they were just what I was looking for and now this on motif is brilliant - something that until now, I didn't realise I was missing eeded! I am going to check out your interior ones next as again, It's just what I am looking for! Thank you very much!
I have watched you for a long time and have been inspired many times to take to my brushes again. So it really is time I expressed my gratitude to you for all that you provide to so many. Thank you very much and take care.
Pure magic! It goes from a state of obscure shapes to a gorgeous detailed painting in a few moments. You make it look easy, but I know from experience that it’s not!
Had to watch it again Gary. I love your work. I love light, intense sunlight, particularly when it illuminates a darker area and there’s contrast. It has a contemplative quality, nostalgic even, one ponders. Your paintings capture that quality, which is why I love them so. I’m still painting watercolour and aspire to your standard and type of style. Thanks again Gary. Take care my friend and fellow.
Thank you so very much for taking the time to share your knowledge and talent with us. I started watercolor painting during the pandemic lock-down. I looked at many online sites to see from which "teacher" I could best learn and yours really stood out. Your paintings are beautiful: your technique, as well as the content. Also you live in one of my favorite parts of the US ( I live across the border, in Canada) and so many of the outdoor scenes you paint are immensely appealing. I will keep at it, pay close attention to what you say and hope to eventually create paintings that I won't be embarrassed to share :-) Have a great weekend and stay safe.
Thx Carolina, I am happy you could are enjoying watercolor and growing your artistic spirit. We need this sort of creative activity in our lives - best from Boston Gary
Oh darn, I missed the open studio. Well, the atmosphere you created with those beautiful big shapes really comes through. I am excited about seeing a series. We are all in this strange time together and how better to use the time than watching and RE-watching your demos. And of course attempting to paint what you are teaching. Thank you so much. And be safe Gary.
Thank you Sarah - there have been some positives to the lock down - my studio is as clean as ever - but would trade the new look for a week at my favorite coffee shop :)
Seen this one today Gary nice work again..in the color version the light is very well established and has a rich backdrop..but the sketch or tonal study has a special something about it..I think it has a overall quietness about the scene..well done
Great instruction. I have been enjoying many of your videos for months in preparation for a trip to Europe in March which ultimately had to be cancelled. Ill just keep on gaining insights from you and spend these days practicing in fervent hope of some plein air experiences! Thanks for the inspiration!
thank you Gary so much for this lesson: very helpful - specifically the path from the initial image to shapes and then to the design! appreciate you shared it very much! love your art).
Thank you for an excellent tutorial , you are a very good teacher explaining how you achieved your beautiful painting . I learnt a lot from your clear instruction ..stay safe , keep well .
Thank you for the lesson. I am trying to put the big shapes to use. It is a bit of a challenge for me I admit because of being such a detailist. When able to use outside lighting in a building or on one I plan to put the advice to work. That was quite a color drying shift. I tend to avoid indantrone blue to protect the paper. Your familiarity with the pigments shows. Thank you and I hope you find some tasty coffee.
love it Gary , such a fan> I have been taught to soak the paper, i tape and then start. after the first wash i hair dry and then start on the second wash , but always worry that i am then painting wet on dry not wet on wet,,how do you get around this? thanks alot
You are wonderful. This is informative and relaxing. That initial sketch has such a clear defined power of contrast. I would love to see you move through multiple sketches just to embrace that technique.
I like your video and like the interior motif, that showing me how use watercolour technique serve to your painting with present the contrast, the interior surrounding and focal point figures.great work. Thank you so much.
What a beautiful, moody painting. Do you always paint standing up? I've noticed that many expert watercolor painters create figures in the same way. I'm curious to know more about your background and training. Great tutorial! Thank you
I like to work with standing - because I can stand back easily and view the painting from a distance - my training is pretty standard - 4 years diddling in art school - 50 years working in the field :) I am grateful for art school because for 4 years 3 times a week 3 hours a session we had to engage in figure drawing
You got me! You’re the best in watercolor I’ve seen. Can’t think of his name, but there is a Cuban painter that paints similar to your style and very fast. However he is too stingy with his technique even on the DVD to impart his tricks! Thank you very much.
Thx Cheryl - I appreciate the support. I am happy you are enjoying my channel. Best Gary - I think you mean Alvaro Castagnet - he evolved his powerful style in Australia
Hi Paco - thx for the support - I am dealing with it by painting a little more - visiting friends virtually, and through contemplation...the days pass smoothly so far..

thx for the question - I don't stretch the paper - I have learned to manage with some buckling and also not to over saturate the paper...Brush size plays an important role :)
It always amazes me how, starting with a simple pencil outline, your paintings seem to get lost into a sea of blurred color shapes where nothing is recognizable anymore and then, as by magic, a few stokes suddenly reveal a whole world. Demo after demo I’m still wondering if it’s a technique that can be learnt or pure talent.
Damien Thouvenin , talent carried me a long way, it filled my ego to hear about myself as a child and some times even today. Yet I believe if I had less talent or none, but more will and sincere interest and drive and open mindedness to learn more fundamentals and techniques and actually worked hard at it, I may have produced something of real value and beauty rather than just above average family art gifts. And to think I made some money at it. Ha. Art is hard, has rules and takes a lot of work. Art isn't a this or that secret. It's work. I'm finally ready to have to work at it. That's why I'm here. To learn from someone both talented and working. Revealing the real magic. P.S. Your description of your observation of water color painting nailed the process.
Hi Damien, Thanks for the support and insight - you are right - making art is a long and challenging road -- and unfortunately that road disappears once in a while - I guess I just kept finding my way back - best Gary

Thanks so much. I've just found these videos, and as a beginning watercolorist these are super helpful and inspirational. Wonderful.
Lovely lesson. Exactly this is not what alvaro and most others don't explain. The methodical mindset. Thanks.
I am happy to read your observations Khailber
Gary Tucker is a national treasure.

Gary Tucker I did see the new look on the new video that you posted on RUclips. Change is so hard right, LOL. I’m glad you’re safe and well.
Seen this one today Gary nice work again..in the color version the light is very well established and has a rich backdrop..but the sketch or tonal study has a special something about it..I think it has a overall quietness about the scene..well done

thx for the great observations Jennie - I hope to return to those coffee shops soon too!
Love your atmosphere.
I don’t know why but every time I see this on my feed I think of a Smokey bar. Back in the days we had Smokey bars! Lol
love it Gary , such a fan> I have been taught to soak the paper, i tape and then start. after the first wash i hair dry and then start on the second wash , but always worry that i am then painting wet on dry not wet on wet,,how do you get around this? thanks alot

Beautiful! And happy to hear you’re doing well :)
Beautiful!
Amazing, stay well! I have learned a lot from this presentation and have now subscribed.

Another splendid tutorial, Gary. Looking forward to the series on interiors.
It seemes so easy! Beatifull work..Its interesting how you explain the values in a scene, you learn me a lot, thank you
Thanks sir for lessons
You’re a master at capturing light Gary, beautiful, it speaks
You are wonderful, good teacher
Hi Gary, hoy are you dealing with the lockdown?. Your paintings gave me hope and joy. Thanks a lot
Hi Paco - thx for the support - I am dealing with it by painting a little more - visiting friends virtually, and through contemplation...the days pass smoothly so far..
Hi Gary, a beautiful scene with the light as a major actor. Looks wonderful and easy (which is not). Thank you
Thank you Natasha - I spent many hours sketching even painting in the coffee shops around Boston - I really miss that :)
Great video! Have a question about your material. Is it a Kokums jernverk you use as pallete?
a butchers tray - www.dickblick.com/products/butcher-tray-palettes/?clickTracking=true&wmcp=pla&wmcid=items&wmckw=03066-1015&gclid=CjwKCAjwwMn1BRAUEiwAZ_jnEjr1dfrRNkGUrmCtNcuwSBPGb6b1C9CKm_GaG_jgKRDGMoWC66C1FBoCkVAQAvD_BwE
I love your tutorials but I’d love to know how you deal with buckling of the paper or do you stretch it beforehand only the paper must get quite wet?
thx for the question - I don't stretch the paper - I have learned to manage with some buckling and also not to over saturate the paper...Brush size plays an important role :)
Hello Gary, at 11'34'' and later, you are using a brush which is made by Loew Cornell. It seems to have good versatility and a very long and precise point. I do not see it on the link you add below your video. Different color of hair. Could you give me that reference please?
Thank you so much for sharing your art. I like the approach of human beings and of the human condition in your art. Depicting all these moments when life is extraordinary simple, light, simple and sweet. Which a different style and still your personal approach, the result of your work reminds me of Edward Hopper, what is not nothing... . Even if your humility must suffer from that statement, you are probably the best teacher I know on the web (which is a wide place).
I love the Loew Cornell brushes too- fabulous . www.cheapjoes.com/loew-cornell-golden-taklon-brushes.html
Penny MacKenzie thanks for that link. Any idea about type and size at 11’30
Jean-Luc - this is a Loew Cornell from the same series - the bristles look differently because they been stained from previous paintings...size 14 or 16
Thank you.....🇮🇳
