- This video was done to demonstrate some problems and solutions to the challenges in painting with watercolor. Today’s video show some ways to
1 - Work with a complicated shadow pattern
2 - Create luminosity in these shadows
3 - Give the shadows a transparency
The scene is taken from the Southend in Boston on a sunny day. In each video I will address some of the challenges with working on site as well a specific challenges in design and watercolor technique. Along the way I hope you find some challenges as well as some knowledge you can use in your watercolor painting.

Wow, that was some process. It was interesting to see how the windows were brought out from a flat backgroumd to become 3-D shapes coming forward towards the viewer.

Wonderful painting, you've given me the light I needed around this complex subject, I've always observed light very well and I would say I'm good at drawing and a little bit with painting but sometimes understanding light and shades it's not the same than being able to reproduce them specially with such an organic touch, in my case I always felt my way to draw shadows looked a little off and forced, but now that I see your work it's basically because I tend to paint a big part of them, after I had added most of the details, watching all your videos shows me how how wrong it's the way I was approaching in it. Thanks a lot for your awesome works and videos.
Beatiful painting shaw the brown stone building with dapple of shadow pattern in spontaneous quality.your narrative is big helps ,I stand and hold back of brush when i painting.Here is no snow,but has 4 season in one day.thank for your video.

Amazing demonstration. I love to watch those shadows come to life but I have to admit my stomach lurched when you applied that first dark wash over the under painting!

i think this is the time i usually leave my painting unfinished.. cuz i feel i have ruined it

Hi Gary.would you consider doing a still life floral motif using the landscape method where you paint against the light( cool over warm) ? I'd especially like to see how you would do the foliage shadows that show that activity that is so soothing but yet lively. Thank you for your generous sharing.

This was probably one if my favorite lessons or tutorials from you. I notice that shadows move quite fast too and I don't like having them be the first thing painted. I know you were working fast but I couldn't help to think what effect a darker underpainting would have tonally and it's probably because I love to paint with bright colors. Recently I was in NY with all the brownstones and usually they are made or painted to distinguish them. Thank you. Enjoyed the spraying of paint and what other media could do that?🤗

My only doubt -in fact more of a question- would be: why paint this particular motif, What's your personal connection with it ...would you call it strong/not strong.

what paper do you use.....cold press...140?
At the moment I use only rough -140 - but vary between arches and Saunders....reason....drybrush
@@GaryTuckerArtist i'm trying hot press and but sure if i like it...prefer arches rough....it like paper canvass. it grips the paint from the brush in stead of sliding...larger projects i prefer 300 lb
