    3m:04s - Sadly, Experian's AutoCheck has effectively raised their prices by no longer offering the "25 reports for 21 days." Instead, as of December, 2020, they now offer "5 reports for 21 days" for $50 bucks.

      I think they did that because people were abusing it especially car dealers trying to pose as consumers which is who this program was intended for. Most people only run 5 reports max anyway. We run one or 2, as we only do it on a candidate that we are serious about buying, and often look at what the car dealer or eBay has online for the car.

    Hey Jeff,
    What kind of advice can you give me on buying a used truck. We are looking at Chevy Silverado and the Avalanche 2010-15 to keep the price down. As you know we are on a fixed income so we can't afford NEW or just 2-3 years old sadly.
    How much do the reports cost? Can you get a mechanic to look at the vehicle free? If not how much should I expect to pay? What is your opinion on CARFAX?? THANKS AGAIN RODNEY

      @carbuying  3 года назад

      We think that the Autocheck and Carfax reports are the only two that are worth getting and most dealers provide Carfax reports but once you narrow down a particular car I preferred or run my own Carfax report on the car. We always tell people to make sure you always run the vehicle history report and put the car up on a lift otherwise don't buy the car.
      There is no mechanic I know of that will check out a car for free they usually charge anywhere from $50 and up unless maybe it's someone in your family but the idea is to put it up on a lift so they can see if there was any hidden leaks or latent accident damage that we didn't know about. Also you should check eBay Motors for whatever vehicle you're looking at and see how the cars actually sold in the past two weeks to get a good gauge for what you should be paying. We find that often dealers will come down anywhere from $1,000 to $2000 on a used car making you think that you beat them up even though they are still overcharging you. Dealers often charge $3000 more than private party market value for a car. That's why we use printouts from last weeks sale prices on eBay. Please make sure you fully read our used car buying chapter and all of the related content to the used cars here www.carbuyingtips.com/used.htm

    What do you do to prove the maintenance was done on a timely basis if you do YOUR OWN oil changes and maintenance? Keeping receipts for parts and oil doesn't prove that the oil and /or parts went into a specific vehicle. I am asking because I DO ALL basic maintenance on every vehicle I own!

    • @carbuying
      @carbuying  4 года назад

      Ojars all you can do is keep the receipts for the oil and filter purchases. We keep everything in a maintenance notebook for the car, all oil changes receipts, all battery purchases, everything.

    When would you run these reports, do you get the vin before you go in? I'm trying to help a friend that is looking to buy used, and I'm trying to steer him away from craigslist, he doesn't understand the dangers of it

    • @carbuying
      @carbuying  4 года назад

      I believe they give you 30 days to run the 25 reports, so within 30 days of buying. If you're searching online for used cars and find one at a dealer web site, they usually post the VIN# on the listing, so you can se if it's worth going down to the car dealer to see it. There's fraud on every site online, Craigslist is not that bad, I have sold several cars on Craigslist. But you just watch out for people who try to get you to use escrow, it's a fraud, or their shipper will deliver the car for free, that's a fraud. Craigslist is local cash and carry only, any attempts to keep you from seeing and driving the car are a a scam.

    If I'm looking at a 2016 Lexus and it has two owners one was a lease and one was a sale would you recommend staying away from this car? They want 29,900 and I got them down to 28,263.49 out the door 30,500.00

    • @carbuying
      @carbuying  3 года назад

      That is fine, what matters is if the carfax or autocheck report shows no issues, and if you put the car up on a lift. also, check eBay to see how you car sold in the last few weeks, that will give you a sanity check on what selling prices are going to be.

    I've asked DEALERS about taking the car to machinic of my choice, dealers said NO but I can have one come and inspect the car. Any suggestion?

    • @carbuying

      You have to make a choice either let your mechanic come there or go find a dealer who will let you take it to your own mechanic
