Meryl Streep loved these guys. So much so she had them appear in one of her movies (Postcards from the Edge). She performed with them during the last scene and the closing credits of that movie.
I have seen over 200 bands. Deftones, NIN, David Bowie, the Clash et al. These guys are electric live. Still sound amazing. Going to see them in a week again. 8 times. Saw them at the Woodstock Fair (ontario) in the pouring rain and they f**king gave it their all.
I've never heard any one come close to Jims Vocals, he's iconic, Canadian proud! To bad the USA has no taste in amazing bands like Blue Rodeo, Canadians love them far and wide!
Im Canadian. Many amazing bands have come from the USA...no sense knocking...the Eagles, Steely Dan, the Beach Boys had a pretty good run...Boston, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan...I could go on forever
How many (great) Canadian bands owe a serious debt to one Garth Hudson? He did influence a whole lot of keyboard players (not only in Canada, but more there).
He was quite subdued here. In a future show he LET LOOSE. He quit because it was too restrictive. One song they asked him to tone it down and he mocked them with, what he thought was a joke. They said "that's perfect"!!
SO happy I got to see them in a practically empty Horseshoe (if you're familiar with Toronto you'll know exactly the place I mean) just after the "Try" video had gone into rotation on Much Music (Canada's version of MTV). I was lucky enough to spend just over an hour talking to them before they went on stage, not really knowing what to expect other than Try, & OMG., got my hair and everything else on and around me blown back by the back draft. I'm not a gifted enough writer to accurately describe how damn amazing they are/were, hopefully someone reading this will take my word for it.
I used to live around the corner from the Matador. Heck I even knew a guy who lived there. I saw Blue Rodeo play there and also Big Sugar before they got famous. Their bassist played an upright at that time. I saw the Tragically Hip play twice in one weekend at the Horseshoe. Good times. Fave show was the Hip at the concert Hall on Davenport and Yonge followed by Johnny Winter at the Copa.
Im an american who think's he's very connected to music (roots, rock, country, folk) everything begins and ends w/The Band) Ive lived in 7 states and was in my mid 20s when they sang on Letterman and I never heard of them/Jim until 12/31/08. What talent. (I searched him because someone posted he appeared on the Kathleen Edwards hockey video).
@jeffkahl I had no idea that Blue Rodeo was on David Letterman. My favourite band ever. While they were singing, I had protective feelings. Leave them alone, they are beautiful, is what I was thinking. I was 14 in 1991. I saw them play the Red River Ex. Thank you for sharing this video, you are very king.
Great clip. Have been a Letterman watcher off-and-on since his late night beginnings on NBC. But missed BR the night they were on his show & never saw the clip...until now. Thanks.
Just heard this song on the radio for the FIRST TIME like 2 days ago, then had to find it on youtube. What a performance! Can't believe I had never heard it before. The song is AWESOME and the BAND's performance is KILLER STUFF, especially the guitar and keyboard solos!!!!!!!! Wish I had known about Blue Rodeo earlier in my life but at least I know now so........play it LOUD!
Saw them at Peter Clark Hall in Guelph Ontario Canada that same year 1991. They sounded so tight just like the album. Incredible show like this performance.
Makes me so damn proud to be a blue rodeo fan... to see them nail their u.s tv debut.. i was 8! Hahaha... ive seen them 17 times .. the soundtrack of my life
haaa...Dave says.." you passed the audition,,"..... We all heard someone else say that befor.....all those yrs ago... But man,,they sure rocked Rocked Rockerfella plaz,,,that night...1
@Freethinker12341 the model of organ Bob is using has an interesting feature with the power switch where if you hold the key and turn it off it gives a "falling off" sound. i've actually seen Bobby do this live. it's really a groovy effect!
If I live to be 100, I'll never understand why this band hasn't seen more than moderate success south of the border? Oh well. Less time in the U.S. means more time at home for us to enjoy!
Where is Basil? This bassist is OK, but he ain't Basil. I found this MuchMusic clip from 1990 (on release day) of them doing this tune plus "What Am I Doing Here," with Basil in his rightful place doing his incomparable lines. I was surprised that Wiseman (in a Canadiens jersey) plays the harmonica. I love how Canuck rockers often wear hockey gear. ruclips.net/video/v0_Zjktb4wc/видео.html&ab_channel=SandysVHScollection
sheze45 I wounder if they "let" him do that solo..there were times he was on a short leash..when they asked him to tone it down for the recording of this song..he mockingly played the simple chords, and Jim and Greg said.."that's perfect"!!
very very cool and great performance...one little thing....when bands performed on letterman, a lot of times there was room for paul shaffer to include himself in the mix...this time it seemed he was MIA....i kinda felt a bit sorry for him... I know Bob was the Man, and it is hard for two guys to play the keys on one song. ..but i think they coulda come up with something to let paul in on the action...
id believe that, if youve seen any other performances on letterman from that era members of the tonight show band always sit in , i remember thinking it was odd at the time actually
Dave never paid for travel for more than 3 members of just about any band. If Anton Fig is good enough to play on KISS records, he's good enough for your band. Sorry, Ringo.
Hank Wirtz You joking? From Toronto to New York has to cost $40 in a Greyhound. Bloody weak excuse for a band member to not be there on a nation wide premiere.
WELL DAVEY , WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THAT ? IT MAYBE COLD IT MAY BE BIG , BUT WE HAVE YOUR WHOLE MUSIC DEPARTMENT SEWED UP. GIVE THEM MUSIC STEP ONE . THANK YOU GENTLEMEN ,YOU TO PAUL. GIANFRANCO FRONZI ./ JAN./ 22 /2011
@booradleymtl might've been a union thing? maybe they could get all the paperwork done in enough time? I know Sloan. Would've been interesting to hear Anton and Will play on something like Underwhelmed or Coax Me with equal conviction as Chris or Andrew.
There you go. That's a good call. I just read in an interview Jim Cuddy did, that he and Greg flew to New York together to do Letterman in thr middle of a tour. Wiseman was there but maybe at the time it was cost - prohibitive to fly the WHOLE band to New York then back to the tour. Still looking for the whole story
I'll jump off a bridge with a rope around my neck before I work with "HEATHER CLEAVE LAND" and "ONTA RIO SHORES" ever again... Talk about a land yard... Never trust the POPO they will only PO PO PO. Thanks for wasting my time and money Missus "Social worker" for the damned. thanks for all the "Trust help".
Meryl Streep loved these guys. So much so she had them appear in one of her movies (Postcards from the Edge). She performed with them during the last scene and the closing credits of that movie.
Now that is what you call a damn amazing live performance
yup! That's it right there
I have seen over 200 bands. Deftones, NIN, David Bowie, the Clash et al. These guys are electric live. Still sound amazing. Going to see them in a week again. 8 times. Saw them at the Woodstock Fair (ontario) in the pouring rain and they f**king gave it their all.
Hard to believe not many people have seen this 1991 US performance from late night clip from this awesome CanCom band Blue Rodeo!
Every single time I watch this, I am still amazed how fantastic this performance was.
I've never heard any one come close to Jims
Vocals, he's iconic, Canadian proud! To bad the USA has no taste in amazing bands like Blue Rodeo, Canadians love them far and wide!
Canadian one of my top bands. Groupie in the 90's. Still got it!
I guess the Eagles and the like don't count?
❤ you know it Kat 💙
Im Canadian. Many amazing bands have come from the USA...no sense knocking...the Eagles, Steely Dan, the Beach Boys had a pretty good run...Boston, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan...I could go on forever
Half Moon Run same thing
Europeans sure like them.
I bet a lot of Americans that night said HOLY S#$%! and went out the next day and bought the album... A little gift from up north!
Greg Keeler & Jim Cuddy - the Lennon and McCartney of country rock!
Or maybe Hillman and Parsons too :) Love your user name btw
Canada bands just CRUSH IT. And so underrated. Blue Rodeo is still killing it, for the record…💕Canada 🇨🇦
Just seen these guys in concert 3 days ago... Still amazing ... sound just like they did 30 years ago ... keep rockin' guys!
Jim Cuddy is unbelievable
Love Bob Wiseman's keyboard solo. They rock!
Out of this world ! Classic
30 years later I still get goosebumps. Ty
My God that organ solo!!!!!!!

I've been at the Horseshoe Tavern many weekends & never had the pleasure of seeing these guys. Lucky you ❤ 🎶 💙
I used to live around the corner from the Matador. Heck I even knew a guy who lived there. I saw Blue Rodeo play there and also Big Sugar before they got famous. Their bassist played an upright at that time. I saw the Tragically Hip play twice in one weekend at the Horseshoe. Good times. Damn, Bobby did some damage with those keys! The boys were so awesome back then, and they still rock!

Amazing!! Real musicians are so hard to come by which makes me appreciate Blue Rodeo even more!!
@jeffkahl

I was 8 but loved them my whole.life..this is my.little time capsule i go back to :) found this video 11 yrs ago..such a gem!
WOW. Just WOW. Love Blue Rodeo.
4 people stumbled into this page and have no clue what good music sounds like.
...or 4 people could do without paul shaffer and the worlds most dangerous band.
They do now!!!
Great clip. Have been a Letterman watcher off-and-on since his late night beginnings on NBC. But missed BR the night they were on his show & never saw the clip...until now. Thanks.

If you get the chance to see them live, jump at it. They put on an awesome show and who knows how much longer they'll be touring.
+gvbezoff So true! I think I have seen them 10 times now...? LOL
I love you guys in concert. I have been to 6 of their concerts. I played the song everytime.
Saw them at Peter Clark Hall in Guelph Ontario Canada that same year 1991. They sounded so tight just like the album. Incredible show like this performance.

Untouchable that year Grammy Grammy, Jim's voice is Epic live. Love these guys

How has Paul Schaffer not cranked these guys to the top
Ya I know Canada is awesome but this song is EPIC
Wow! Jim and Greg are great. Good to see Bob Wiseman on the keyboards. I was waiting for him to play with his toes. Great stuff!
Saw them in that same year in Guelph Ontario Canada. So tight and like the album then and here. Great performance.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise
You really want to rock, you go Canadian 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
OH CANADA HERE'S TALENT , MUST SEE.
How this didn’t vault BR into pop stardom is beyond me, killer performance.
It was on at 1:30 in the morning.
Awesome
one of Canada's best kept secrets
love their music and it doesn't hurt that Jim is so darn cute!!!!
Hey kids this Rocks and their talent just GLOWS in this performance.
I love this song. You are beautiful. I hate low blowers. Give me a real man who is straight up with it all.
Letterman: "You passed the audition. Sounds terrific."

haaa...Dave says.." you passed the audition,,".....

I agree, Mark R, and I am from "south of the border."
Right on man, hey rock n roll this good is international!!
Could not agree more, but I wish their true value was felt here in the States.
My favorite band of all time!
If I live to be 100, I'll never understand why this band hasn't seen more than moderate success south of the border?
Oh well. Less time in the U.S. means more time at home for us to enjoy!
SO true @truenorth1968 - I'll never understand either!

Ahhh, the Bobby Wiseman days... good times!
sheze45 I wounder if they "let" him do that solo..there were times he was on a short leash..when they asked him to tone it down for the recording of this song..he mockingly played the simple chords, and Jim and Greg said.."that's perfect"!!
If anyone says Devin doesn't look like his dad... Show them this lol
They rocked that stage and the gap in lettermans teeth. Excellent way to show the states how sorry we are about celine dion.
Jenks Auto
Rite!!
lol
Celine was amazing for her type of music though.
very very cool and great performance...one little thing....when bands performed on letterman, a lot of times there was room for paul shaffer to include himself in the mix...this time it seemed he was MIA....i kinda felt a bit sorry for him... who's the dude with the yellow Strat? obviously he's not part of Blue Rodeo itself. strange that Basil and Mark weren't on the show with them.
12:30 shows were pretty cost conscious then and they used the house band a lot for guest performances.
sick on the keys
Bobby Wiseman... wow.
CANADIANS FTW!!!
id believe that, if youve seen any other performances on letterman from that era members of the tonight show band always sit in , i remember thinking it was odd at the time actually
Not the Tonight show.
Wow, that was Ace! :)
Wiseman for the win!
You know you’ve made it when a Canadian band is on letterman :)
where's Baz?
Dave never paid for travel for more than 3 members of just about any band. If Anton Fig is good enough to play on KISS records, he's good enough for your band. Sorry, Ringo.
Hank Wirtz You joking? From Toronto to New York has to cost $40 in a Greyhound. Bloody weak excuse for a band member to not be there on a nation wide premiere.
@@darreningleson1261
Please tell me that isn't the reason Bas wasn't there!
@@darreningleson1261 Apparently they were on tour at the time so it may have been more than a Greyhound from Toronto.
No dislikes! :)
Hope I don't get any greive here but why trust your self? So many great songs on that disc.
Maybe it was the single around the time of the performance. That's how those things go sometimes.
That's how we do it in Canada
WELL DAVEY , WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THAT ? IT MAYBE COLD IT MAY BE BIG , BUT WE HAVE YOUR WHOLE MUSIC DEPARTMENT SEWED UP.
GIVE THEM MUSIC STEP ONE . THANK YOU GENTLEMEN ,YOU TO PAUL.
GIANFRANCO FRONZI ./ JAN./ 22 /2011
I'm curious what this means. 🙂
Where was Bas for this performance?
Back at the hotel with a case of “Blue”………????
Kellor can sure play
@booradleymtl might've been a union thing? maybe they could get all the paperwork done in enough time? I know Sloan. Would've been interesting to hear Anton and Will play on something like Underwhelmed or Coax Me with equal conviction as Chris or Andrew.

Still looking for the whole story
@booradleymtl I have heard stiff like that about this show as well, bizarro!
@race13 I'm thinking the same thing :) If they didnt, their loss!
How was it possible that a dishwashwer and janitor had more responsibility than an officer of her majestiease courts,.
I'll jump off a bridge with a rope around my neck before I work with "HEATHER CLEAVE LAND" and "ONTA RIO SHORES" ever again... Talk about a land yard... Never trust the POPO they will only PO PO PO. So did the drummer have to take a back seat to the house band drummer?
Americans; you're welcome.
@joannatouchedjim I think he lent his original choice of shirt to the guy on his left LOL :P
too bad they didn't have the whole band
So this. Is that even Keelor?
