    It took me a year of watching all types of soaping vids before I started soaping. I watched and re-watched the same videos over and over again until I was able to tell the difference between an experienced soaper and a beginner. It took me a month of watching a soap calc demo (thank you fellow soaper!) before I caught on to that. Once I learned soap calc, I developed my own recipes and learned to manipulate the superfat percentage to the point that I can make any type of soap and have just the right amount of butters and oils caressing my skin along with a powerful lather. Soaping 101 is a good place to learn. And soapers are always learning.

    This is the best video on youtube! It really helps beginner soap makers, it's a helper for people living on a tight budget, it's an easy recipe for those who want to sell soap and improve the family income, it's a nice hobby, it can be useful in times of economy crisis or in a poor country like mine (Brazil), AND it's a good idea for gifts. Your calculations are neat, your voice over is straight to the point, you don't try to be funny or to sound arrogant. Thank you very much for this video! I wish you the best!

    I don't want you to be afraid to make soap but do understand it's a precise thing or your soap will be too caustic and may damage skin. I think the place Soapmaking101 gets a lot of the supplies has a soap calculator where you plug in the fats you want to use and it then tells you how much water and lye to use.

    I just subscribed , I found your channel trying to find a tutorial on how to use wood ash as a source of lye to make soap at home. You have a great teaching style and a soothing voice . I had no idea that there was a craft movement in soap making. While I am primarily interested in soap making as a way to be more self sufficient , I am interested in learning more. Thank You for making this Channel .

    More on the Cocoa Butter: I just looked at Essential Depot, where this author gets some of her supplies. The Least expensive way to get cocoa butter from them is to buy 5lb for $29.02. This comes to $1.45 for 4oz. If you find this 4oz stick at a Dollar Store -- buy up all you can get -- it's a STEAL!

    Google 'soap calculator'. There are several online and you just input your oils and desired weight of entire loaf and it calculates quantities for lye, water, and oils themselves. Check general combinations of oils in different recipes because some work better together than others. For example, all coconut oil can be quite cleansing, but quite drying at the same time. Different oils have different qualities and a good combination is the key.

    Can't hardly wait for you to do a soap using a tallow. I made my first batch of beef tallow soap on 10/4/13. It was a 4 lb. batch. Recipe: 37.76 oz beef tallow; 9.6 oz. canola; 15.4 oz. coconut oil & 1.3 oz. of castor. Water 24.32 oz & lye 9.2 oz, with 4 oz. of fragrance. I love the hardness of this bar, as well as the creaminess. Additive - goat's milk (powdered). I am a relative new soapmaker. Love your channel! Looking forward to making your 4 Thieves soap.

    luving2scrap, you can also use milk cartons, cut the edge off the long way to make a loaf mold, do line it though. I think we all have at home - milk, oatmeal and honey and knock off those items of the list also! Cheaper is even better!
    I liked that you used milk at the end, as additive. I recently made Goat milk soap (my first soap ever) and I did scorched milk a bit, as it was used iced, instead of ice water....I also added a bit honey and insulated soap for 24 hr. Now I know - I shouldn't do it in the future!

    Hi! I have been thinking of trying making soap. Your video is so helpful! And I LOVE that you used Dollar Tree ingredients to show just how easy and inexpensive it can be done if needed! One question from a novice--I don't mind using shopping bags for liners but I was curious if parchment paper, or even wax paper would work also? Not sure what made me think of them but thought I'd ask for the "file away for future knowledge" category! Thanks again for this video!

    if you have to ask, "what's this or what's that?", rewind the video and watch it again. There's an entire internet to google basic questions you have on soap making and proper substitutions for ingredients, etc.... You cannot merely substitute x for y -- it's a chemical reaction and has to be precise. Water should have no chemicals, e.g. distilled water (and since this was a beginner recipe, it probably would have been prudent to state it). City water has chemicals from treatment facility.

    Everyone please note: Get the Cocoa Butter FIRST!! I just spent a few hours of time shopping locally (Chicago NW suburbs). I bought all the other stuff at my local Dollar Tree Store. However, the Dollar Tree folks here have never seen cocoa butter -- and I spoke to the manager who had experience at many DT stores. (I even printed out the pictures of t he items & brought them along.) Target -- Nope. Finally found the item at Walgreens for $3.99/4oz. stick! Then after I got home I went to Amazon -- pricing was almost as bad, but larger quantities were available. If you live in the Chicago area, DO NOT rely on the availability of 100% pure Cocoa Butter for $1. I do not think it will happen.
    Pleae let me know if you find a 100% Cocoa Butter stick & where for $1!! Thanks.

    • @LaadeeV
      @LaadeeV 10 лет назад +4

      Well, $3.99 for 4 oz. Is slightly under $1.00 per oz. She bought two sticks, each stick being 1 oz. and totals $2.00 for both sticks. The $3.99 you paid for 4 oz is still comparable because you're still only using 2 oz or half of the 4 oz you paid for, if following her recipe.

    • @tkarlmann
      @tkarlmann 10 лет назад +4

      I made a mistake there. Walgreens is selling 0.5oz for $3.99. Sorry for the confusion.

    • @LaadeeV
      @LaadeeV 10 лет назад +1

      tkarlmann Thanks for the update. I couldn't find it in my local dollar store or Walmart. When I remembered you said Walgreen's had it, I was on my way to Walgreen's. I'd have been sadly disappointed finding it for such a high price. I'll check my local beauty supply stores/ hair stores.

    • @tkarlmann
      @tkarlmann 10 лет назад +1

      Laadee V
      Walgreens has some 100% Cocoa butter on their Website that seems like it would work for $1.59 -- the problem is, they won't ship it to a store for free, so you need to pay shipping. Otherwise the 0.5oz for $3.99 variety is in the stores.
      P.S.: I also ran this recipe through SoapCalc.net, and it did not seem to fit within their ranges -- but I am not any sort of a soapmaker, and do not know how to value dissimilar information from various sources.

    I have only one question for this recipe. I went to the Bramble berry lye calculator to substitute my cocoa butter for coconut oil, because I couldn't find it at my dollar store. Plus my soybean/olive oil blend from the dollar store was different too. 90% soy bean oil, 10% olive oil. So I figured my ounces for each 1.7 of olive oil and 15.3 of soybean oil for 17 oz total. I punch in all of these numbers in with a 9% super fat and I come up with 2.4 oz of lye and 6.27 of liquid. I still have 19 total oz of oil, and my soap yield is 28 oz or 1.75#. OK, so here is my question. In your recipe how did you factor the 4.7 oz of water? I'm assuming that you subtracted an oz for the milk additive but compared to the lye calc there is still .57 oz to be accounted for. I guess I'm just wondering.

      I just finished my first batch of soap ever with the above ingredients from my previous comment. It came to trace! I did add cocoa powder to add color. So now I wait. I'll let you know if it really did turn out.

    I wanted to point out an issue I have (not the mental one) that others might experience. Every time I've made oatmeal soap, the oatmeal in the soap becomes so scratchy it hurts. It's like having sand in it. Next time I try, I'm going to soak the oatmeal in water first. I do not know of anyone else having this issue every time I ask other soap makers. I grind my own oatmeal powder.

    Hi. My CP soap made with coconut milk and olive oil gelled because I insulated it. What can I do with it now?

    I love watching your videos but I still have not tried cold process soap. The lye still scares me a bit as I can be a bit clumsy but I might seriously think about trying this recipe. I still don't understand how you know you have reached trace. Thx for all your wonderful videos, Wendy p.s I bet it wouldn't be that cheap from here in Australia :)

    Can we add fragrance oils to this? If so how much can be added?
    Thanks
