    A tip that Katie Carson said in her lye safety video is to use half water half ice. It will help cool the lye and keep the fumes at a minimum

      @@maria.bibi94the lye needs to cool but it shouldn’t be cold. Needs to be a lil warm. That is what the temperature gun is for. And the oil needs to be a little above room temperature (until it is clear) but the essential oil can be just room temp.

    Vinegar! Always have white vinegar on hand for if you end up with lye on your skin. I put white vinegar into my sink of soap to deactivate any lye and I use straight vinegar to wipe down my surfaces and tools like my stick blender, thermometer and scale.

      Vinegar on lye burn can actually make it worse! ALWAYS use plenty of cool, clean running water on a lye burn. For what it’s worth, common vinegar from the grocery store is only 5% vinegar and 95% water.

      It depends on the quality of your water. If it is good enough for drinking, it is probably okay for making soap. Some water contains chemicals or minerals that can cause problems with soap making. I would recommend making a small batch of soap using the water you have available and see how your soap turns out.
      Hope this helps! 🥰

    i see that you used a glass pyrex measuring cup to mix the lye & water. I've just read on various sites that this is unsafe as lye weakens glass and can cause the glass to explode. Is it safe to use a glass pyrex container to mix the lye and water?

      We recommend heat-safe glass, plastic, or stainless steel bowls. Don’t use aluminum - it can react with the lye and create toxic fumes.

    When adding color, do I take the oil from my already measured out oils? Or do I measure out oil thats not from the mix? Hope that makes sense. Do I use fragrance oil or essential oils and whats the differences? Thank you.

      The oils used to disperse colors can be separate from the measured oils for your soap. You're welcome to use fragrance or essential oils in your soaps. We have a great article with the distinctions here: www.brambleberry.com/ingredient-information/fragrance-and-essential-oils/art0017-essential-oils-vs-fragrance-oils.html

    What’s the recommended temperature to mix the lye and the oils?

    • @bramble-berry
      @bramble-berry  5 месяцев назад

      We like to allow the lye water and the oils to cool to 130° F or below (and ideally within 10 degrees of each other).

    Anne-Marie I am new to your channel. I absolutely love what you’re showing us because I do have a passion for wanting to make homemade soap. I’ve been wanting to do it for the past year now my question to you is I’m a little confused on some thing small what exactly am I to tell my potential customers that the actual cleaning agent is in the homemade soap I’m assuming it’s a lie, but just tell me please cause I really don’t know. Where is the cleaning agent for the skin derived from? I’m thinking it’s the lie.

      Thank you for your inquiry! The saponified oils are what causes the soap to clean the skin 💜

    Can reverse osmosis (RO) water be used instead of distilled? I heard it’s purer than distilled.

    So I am thinking I would love to make soap, but a quick question please. Can my cups, spoons, etc be used in the kitchen after it’s used in soap making.

      You will need to dedicate a separate set of utensils for soap making.

    I love my coconut oil. Do I measure when it's solid or do I melt it and then measure it?
