Really interesting what you said about the confusion between what is pain and what's not. I've just had surgery for spinal stenosis at C4/5/6. Prior to the operation, my desk fan aggravated the regimental badge area on my right arm. It was hugely painful! Thankfully, 2 new discs, some screws and a bone donor later I am now on the mend thanks to an amazing team in London. Loss of my right arm deltoid and bicep is going to require lengthy physio but all the pain has gone :)

Awesome John. I had this in 2017 through blunt trauma (no deep open wounds though/ no laceration of the nerve) and would've loved to see your video come up first. I initially could not feel anything around the deltoid area or fire the deltoid muscle. My triceps felt really weak too, so that may also be innervated by the axillary nerve. Next month it will be 3 years since the trauma, and although its still weak, you wouldn't notice i have an issue, you'd just think I was a skinny/ weak person. Good luck to people who have this today, feel free to ask me questions :)
Hello. I have this but after dislocation. I can’t use my deltoid. At all. Almost all signs show auxiliary nerve is badly damaged. We’re you able to lift your arm at all? How long before you could and you got sensation? I’m approx 10/11 days after and essentially my arm/deltoid muscle is in paralysis. I’m struggling to find much info and my dr saying just wait but it doesn’t feel right and it’s pretty scary situation
Brilliant video, thanks so much. I think I have axillary nerve damage from a shoulder dislocation. Shoulder just sort of 'hangs' now and can't engage muscles when bringing arm backwards (like the pulling stroke of swimming freestyle). I compensate by shrugging shoulder. Hopefully it'll just take time to heal. I appreciate this video so much!
Glad it helped, Axillary nerve damage will take a while to heal - I did mine kayaking off a waterfall as dislocated my shoulder and damaged the nerve and took 4 months to recover - regards JG
@@JohnGibbons Hi John! Love your content. Do you have any videos that talks about rehab of the axillary nerve, or any other nerves for that matter? Like mobilisation and/or common exercises. Or is just time the best treatment here? Thanks! Keep up the good work :)

It’s hard to find info/cases where people lose all felt control after the dislocation and if it came back. It’s quite scary, im starting to feel like my arm will be with permanent paralises.
Great video! Thanks. I have tight scalenes (left only) & stuck neck, 1 therapist said it is brachial plexus entrapment & chiropractor first rib adjustment helps a lot. Hi John, hope you are doing well. My father recently underwent cervical laminectomy with lateral mass screw fixation ( c3-c7) and post-op he is not able to lift his arms. The doctors said it should improve with physiotherapy in 2 months or so but we are really worried about this. Any suggestions or advise? Thanks.
Thanks for the message - could he lift his arms before surgery as you should see an improvement if the nerve roots were compromised by the stenosis unless it has been a problem for many years and surgery might not help that much - regards JG
@@JohnGibbons Yes, he was able to lift his arms before surgery. The right one was bit weaker and pained when he tried to reach for anything above his head but rest functions were normal. After the surgery there is lot of weakness, especially in both biseps, and flexion function is compromised. Thank you so much for replying. Please guide, if possible.
Hoping someone can help point me in the right direction: I had a heavy shoulder dislocation surfing. I definitely have auxiliary nerve damage as it’s now day 10 after the incident and I’m essentially paralysed with my deltoid inactive. I can feel light shaking in the muscle when I really focus on movments like maybe some pulse is getting through. The Drs are not helpful at all, they say just wait and have put me only to a physio. I try tell them it’s clearly a nerve damage issue but they kinda just passed it off as too hard. What specialists could I see to help? Is it a job for neurologists? Or bone special ? Whose going to be best equipped to help with the issue? Also the Dr is saying immobilise for 6weeks but literature says after 1week there’s no seen benifit to joint stability and the real problem here is the nerve. Spending 6weeks immobilised letting my muscle die and not challenging the nerve to grow sounds like the opposite of what to do. But it’s very hard to find info about good protocol for nerves. The best I can see is try increase HGh so I’m going to do some diet and sauna protocol for this. Any direction from people would be really appreciated in this scary moment
hi, I dislocated my right shoulder kayaking off a waterfall and also damaged the Axillary nerve and no supply to the deltoid muscle - on a plus side the muscle activation did come back after 4/5 months as the new regrows approximately 1mm per day so give it some time and you will probably be ok, regards JG

Hello JG Ive been injured for a year now and im 21 yo. Its the left shoulder which is injured. The pain is coming from the armpit. For example when im having my arm bended behind my head and exhaling, i can feel a pinched in the armpit and also on the top of the shoulder. Been through 3 PT’s and 2 ortopedic surgeons and nobody are able to help. At the moment my left scapular acts weird. Could it be nerve damage of the axillary, muscolotaneus or radial nerve or coracobrachialis muscle. Simon - Denmark
Hey Simon, orthopaedic surgeons and pts will not know enough to help you. Look for a peripheral neurosurgeon, because they actually understand the nerves. I went through 4 doctors (2 orthopaedic surgeons, 1 neurologist) before I could get any useful information about my injury. In hindsight, its obvious, if you're getting a pinching feeling and you're thinking its a nerve, then ask someone who knows at least a small bit about nerves. The orthopaedic surgeons and neurologist simply ignored the possibility that nerves could be the case, when it's so obvious, in hindsight. Good luck, I hope you find someone who can explain whats happening to you.
Hey! Thanks for your videos! They are really helpful. 3 Years ago I had an injury while doing pullups at the gym. At that moment I never warmed up and never stretch after the gym session. I got my back paralized at the third rep of the pullup exercise as soon as I came to the gym that day. The MRI from that moment displayed a disc bulge at C5-C6 and I had pain at the left rhomboid for weeks until I got like 5 massage sessions. The only point that annoys me is the point at the left rhomboid. I can do a self-massage with a tennis ball and all the trigger points from the rhomboid will go away, until 1 or 2 days, where that zone starts contracting the muscle again. I strongly believe this is a referred pain to the rhomboids. The pain comes too heavy when I ride bicycle or jump for a while. Could it be that since I hit the gym with intensity from monday to thursday non-stop, I was slowly micro tearing the ligaments between the vertebrae? And the day I got the injury was the last day the ligaments were able to hold the whole structure?I would appreciate it if someone who understands this subject or perhaps had the same issue as I do to collaborate by giving me next steps. I tried ozonotherapy, lots of physiotherapists, neuroprolotherapy, acupuncture, osteopaths, chiropractics, biodecodification, lots of massages, POLD massages and so and so. Thanks for reading.
My surgical humerus head was only a little bit cracked. After that I felt numb under the armpits and teres minor withdrew. And that passed after several magnetic therapies. But the teres minor is weak. There was also a ropture of proximal biceps tendon. That has not been remedied so far. And injury happens before 3 months. For now I can do also all the movements. But I cant raise my arm up all the way up above my head. Is it late for surgery and is the surgery necessary to avoid consequences in future? And what kind of surgery do I need? The doctors did only exam for the bone and not for the soft tissue.
I dont physically treat the brachial plexus as such as nerves dont like to much pressure - it is structures that can irritate the nerves that need the treatment, regards JG
Hi I was wondering if you can explain chronic sublation after humours bone fracture deltoid is antrophy and my upper bone has not been in socked 5 months since my injury dr is thinking axillary nerve damage but what will put bone back up if nerve isn’t working to make the bone stay up ?
