This video was concise and informative. Having had cuff surgery a year ago and now needing it yet again, and having had P.T., I’m hoping that this second surgery will fix my cuff for life. After watching this video and performing the five tests, I’m somewhat relieved that it appears that only my superspinatus (spell check not picking up on this word) is the culprit. So hopefully this surgery won’t be as big a problem as I had previously thought.

That's your shoulder's way of telling you that you did WAY too much!
Also, 'Modern Man' is so naturally OUT of shape! We don't get enough normal exercise driving to work and sitting at a computer. Our bodies still want us to be hunter-gatherer's. Sigh.
Also, there's some real compelling data that what we eat (or don't eat) has a LOT to do with the flexibility of our muscles and tendons.... then, add the component of GENETICS. Yikes. Do you have grandparents with a lot of arthritis and/or rheumatism, bursitis, etc??

I've been fighting w/ shoulder and various joint pain for DECADES. Arthritis runs in my genetics. Just from common usage, the joints develop bumpy arthritis - that in turn slowly wears at those stretched muscles that go across your 'ball joint'. Next, the tears start.
Just THINK what it must have been like for our ancient, cave-dweller, mammoth hunter relatives when they got these wear-n-tear injuries on their important joints - but had NO, zero, options to fix or repair it. And if you were the chief hunter with a torn-up rotator cuff and arthritic shoulder.... you risked losing status within the group.

I have a 90% tear in my supraspinatus but can do all these. Yes pain is there but zero weakness. I guess 20 years of badminton and 30 years after that sport climbing makes your shoulders very strong.

I have pain doing the empty can test.
Back in May 2024, during the morning, I flared out my elbows doing overhead dumbbell press (first time with this exercise and very light weight) but felt nothing. Went to bed and when I woke up I had a horrible pain on the shoulder I slept on. I had severe for 3 months then by the end of the 4th month it felt had reduced to a 3 out of 10 pain. Its now December 2024 and it has barely gotten any better. Especially if I swing my arm upward. My arm goes through the motion of a narrow grip chin up. I move my arm back and as I accelerate (1/4 the range of motion from "elbow behind back to parallel with my torso), a stabbing pain takes over and I have to stop quickly 😢 8/10 pain briefly but quickly gets there.
(I can move my arm in almost every direction and still lift weights but at certain angles there is pain and if I shift my shoulder back(pulling back with middle trapez) sharp pain is felt in the same area you mentioned

i struggle a little with numbers 1 and 5, but what about the dryer test: when bending over and reaching into a dryer or retrieving something from under the bed or any shelf above eye level, I experience the most god awful deep stabbing pain in my right shoulder, sometimes dull sometimes intense depending on how much reach I exert. all started when I lost my balance and crashed into a ceramic planter, collapsing all my weight on it between my upper rib cage and arm pit. it's been 2-3months and only mild improvement. I went the urgent care, had it checked out like a week or so after the fact cause I thought it heal on its own. if I knew it's was going to be one of those life altering accident, I would've been more careful.

Hi, Of all the exercises, the one that costs me the most and really hurts is the last exercise: Lift Off Test. What can I do? Thanks for the video.

    This video has excellent quality
Unfortunately, none of the things listed here have triggered my shoulder pain
Recently, I think I damaged something in my shoulder doing W holds with tension bands
But the only way I can trigger the pain is by holding my arm straight in front of me with the elbow locked and the thumb towards the sky
From this position, I will take my right arm and try to bring it to the right of me like I’m opening a door or throwing a back fist
When there is no resistance, I can do the motion fine but with moderate resistance, it sends a pain through my shoulder on that side

Thank you! I passed all 5 tests but my shoulder still hurts 11 weeks after it was (anterior) dislocated when I got attacked and tackled on pavement.
Mine hurts if I reach overhead and then rotate down to extend my arm. Around 11:00 it seizes up. Hurts to sleep on. Really hurts to do the first pushup but then I can do 20 or so.

The 5th one is the test that hurts the most for me. I've been to 3 orthopedic surgeons. All have told me I need surgery but my insurance has to denied me needing surgery and says I just need physical therapy. I have appealed them and they just deny it again because their doctors the have look at my case agree with them because they are on their payroll.
