- How can each of us combat global systems of injustice? Powerful systems like immigration can often work against the very people they are meant to protect. Jaivet Ealom is the only person to ever escape Australia’s notorious offshore detention center on Manus Island, located in the South Pacific. In this talk, Jaivet shares his story and offers suggestions for the most powerful acts that we can take as individuals to face off against systems of oppression.
Jaivet Ealom is a refugee activist and author born in Myanmar who now resides in Canada, where he has become a prominent spokesman for the Rohingya community. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
The book Escape from Manus Prison that the talk is based on is SO good and even more eye-opening. Literally could not put it down. So glad Jaivet made it out.
Deeply moved and touched by the stories of those courageous peoples of humanity in our global community and my decision of people in need going foward is made with you. Many Tks!
Choose humanity over duty ♡♡♡
We are pruod of you. Being a Rohingya, I can imagine what you have felt on that journey but You have suffered a lot.
😥😥
I wanna read your book once.
Thanks
My sincerest wishes that good people always surround you throughout your life. As for the inhumane, they will reap what they sow sooner or later.
May such voices build new system
The fact that the prison nurse looked away shows how messed up this “immigration center” was towards the prisoners.
I think this "immigration center" is really just an "unwanted persons" camp. IE In what I feel is the most sad cases are the people who are literally alone, or have no family, alongside those who are just extra baggage...Especially, when you are already physically in that area of the world. Together these are akin to euthanasia. This feels worse somehow, having to rot to death, rather than just to be put down.
God bless you 🙏 sir... God bless all those who helped you on your journey to freedom
There is no substitute for human compassion and decency. Humanity must always win over protocol. Help others as you would wish them to help you should the need arise....and one never knows when the need could arise.
Such an incredible spirit! Hope his coming days and years are filled with healing and kindness, though for a refugee, there is still the question of home and family left behind!
I think a KEY reality we try to forget is: Most people who become refugees never think that could happen to them! Becoming a refugee can easily become a reality to you and me! I think that scary realization can also be a source of compassion and advocacy towards those who got there “first”!
The Rohingya are still suffering soo much, and it makes me sick to think it’s all because of hate and fear mongering!
While the story is different, the emotions you experienced are very similar to what I went thru

The best I could off is being the nurse who looks away but sadly I am not brave enough to risk my job and face legal ramifications to help a stranger .
I recently escaped from my abusive narcissistic family and narcissistic employer Anthem Inc aka Elevance Health. Since leaving, I have been hiding and residing at a homeless shelter to save my own life. Needing help from legal authorities.
Thanks A'LLAH who deliver u from these human demon

Meloney Moore - I sure hope you receive the help you need very soon, without delay. God bless you.
There are still 105 from that prison and 111 in another island prison on Nauru still there waiting for freedom after 9 years. The new Australian government has not shown any care for them after all these years of suffering. Ashamed Australian who has helped to try and get more resettlement in Canada. Anyone in Canada interested in sponsoring there are more waiting

All life is precious.
A very sad story, hopefully things have changed in refugee camps
I wouldn't count on it. Refugee camps are notoriously awful. I found this story sad and inspiring. A perfect morning listen, wasn't it?

life is so great and I thank god for being alive. I'm watching an incredible video from the other side of the globe that was posted 20 seconds ago. ❤❤❤👌👌👌
fallen angel is literally masquerading as a wheat talking about how he escaped from himself bascially. This world is wheat vs tares. Tares = Fallen angels playing pretend masqueraing as people. Behold, a fallen angel says, "life is so great and I thank god for being alive. I'm watching an incredible video from the other side of the globe that was posted 20 seconds ago. ❤❤❤👌👌." What else do you think theyre saying and doing?

uniforms are not inhumane.
I would follow protocol unfortunately, because that's the law and job SOP
Sadly, I would too. Even though, I would not have taken the job from the beginning.

🦾❤️ Welcome to turtle island.
Unfortunately you and many other refugees are not blonde blue eyed refugees from Ukraine 😥
Sad situation 😢

Hi 👋 all muslims OnLy
Only what? There is no god so grow up and stop wasting your limited time.
@@vivalaleta we are our own gods ...depends what he meant by the word god ....
_"muslims OnLy"_ You know, I was recently watching some videos on a Muslim youtube channel. They had many beautiful poems written by some great poets from the middle east, and the videos had music like I used to hear as a child in California in the 1970's, because my parents were hippies who believed in peace not war, love not hate. So they had records of wonderful music from all over the world, and it's this that inspired me to become a musician, and a person of peace, not bigotry.
To seek to accommodate and celebrate diversity, and so to see clearly that nearly all of the problems humanity creates for itself, are caused by bigotry. I know you have been the victim of bigotry yourself at some point. Very few people in the world are not directly harmed by some form of bigotry, be it classism, racism, misogyny, nationalism, etc etc.
We don't have to be divided and hate each other to keep our own identity and culture. As long that culture isn't committing violence against another, then we should all be able to live together with peace and prosperity for *everyone.*
I want you to have peace, because how can I expect you to want me to have peace otherwise? I want you to have those things that you need to live a healthy life, because if I deny them to you, why would you not deny to me too?
I want you to be happy, because Love people and want to see them smiling, not sad, hurting and struggling.
We all must each ask ourselves these things. What sort of world do we want to live in? And would that world make only us and those we agree with happy? And thus never have peace for anyone. Or would the world we want leave as much room as possible for *everyone* to be happy? And thus have a really good chance for world peace.
I wish you and all my fellow Earthlings peace and prosperity. 🙂
