The not so helpful help for those experiencing homelessness | Grant Denton | TEDxReno

  • People in poverty have a sense of scarcity. So, it makes sense for them to keep taking. It’s weird to think that helping can contribute to keeping someone sick. The way to minimize the damage from helping in the wrong direction is to be mindful of possible unintended consequences. We have to be more thought-out in all aspects of helping. We have to ask ourselves: What are we “helping” the person to do more easily? Are we helping in a way that will contribute to getting someone off the streets or in a better condition? Or are we helping someone stay successfully homeless?
Grant Denton has overcome significant diversity. Childhood abuse and abandonment, drug addiction and a life of crime, to emerge as a leading advocate for folks in need, especially the unhoused. Denton burned through jobs. He became addicted to drugs and was in and out of homelessness from 2007 to 2013. In 2013, Denton was arrested on burglary charges that could have sent him to prison for five to seven years. The judge gave him a choice: enter drug court and rehab or go to prison. On Dec. 28, 2014, Denton used illegal drugs for the last time. “That was It! I was done,” he says. Denton moved to Reno for a fresh start, working in sober living, a homeless shelter, for the Downtown Reno Business Improvement District, and in an addiction treatment center, where he formed a crew of community volunteers that lead to the Karma Box Project. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

That PART need housing is VERY TRUE. I do my best to help the local shelter with what is needed, even when I don’t have nothing. I only want GOD to know what I do for to help people. I know how it feels to be homeless, hungry, no water or bathroom to use, etc. thankfully GOD was always right there to provide for me. May GOD Bless you 💙

One thing we used to have in our area was house boats, tidal estuary and people could live there for very little, yes a few boats were in disrepair and a few abandoned. But then the wildlife communities got involved and decided swans and the ability of the middle class to take strolls in this environment was more important than homing people. Gentrification caused a profit for house owners but a lose again for those who find it hard to maintain a job, through mental health & /or drugs.

All of this is absolutely true! I don't really need more socks, more forks, more tiny plastic combs, or more junk food in plastic containers. I need money to pay for my phone bill, keep my bank account open, gas for my car, buy Pose pads & buy propane tanks to cook or stay warm. I need a method of staying alive & buying life necessities so I can get even a certificate class so I can get a living wage job.... or just a job I can do from my homeless shed so I can eventually get a home again. After being homeless in California for 9 months I have learned that homeless agencies and Government homeless departments have no incentives to house or really help homeless people because the profits from keeping people homeless is too good.

We who are in the experience do tell the unhelpful helpers what we need, they just don't listen to us.
They have already decided what kind of help they want to give, and if what you need falls outside the box, they will look at you earnestly and say, "This is what I can give you."

Goleta Beach in Santa Barbara used to be a great homeless spot. Lots of free food from upscale picnickers, the CHP was reasonable and let you park at the beach if you didn't go to your car during the night. I was there, homeless, for a court case, and once that was all done (I went to jail for 6 months) I had a home to go to. But, a year later, some chicks that I had met up there came by and wanted me to go back up with them.
I'm not a drug addict, the legal trouble I was in was minor, and happened after I was 55, and I was living at the beach for a few weeks before going to jail - I wasn't desperate like most in my predicament. I stayed home.
What stuck me harder than anything else living among the homeless, was the fact that you're in a truly lawless situation, the police will not help you, they'll call the coroner, but that's about it.

    Proverbs 16:24 | NVT
24 Gentle words are like honey: sweet to the soul and health to the bones.
Unfortunately, in life we encounter people who treat others harshly. We must not be unwise, letting arguments take over our lives. Instead, we must be wise and speak with love, humility and gentleness. Our words should be pleasant and convey the love of God. They should be the opportunity for the Holy Spirit to speak through us. Have dominion over your tongue, control the words that come out of your mouth.

Mr Denton, my brother from another mother. What might we learn and accomplish if we created a network? Every city has someone or many someones with compassion and energy feeding the"problem". I did for 25 years. Almost killed me. Common sense systems designed to solve specific breakdowns in the lives and communities we would serve.
I've been shaking this tree with my neighbors, businesses and homeless friends/laborers and though I am grateful for the exercise I think it's the work by which we restore our humanity and set a sustainable course. All of us starting where we are with what we have but aligned toward the common good. I break self defeating habits because I want desperately to be in the future in my head where no one struggles alone and little by little struggling becomes learning and growing and mother nature is well pleased. 😂
