On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.

Honestly, the 2nd round was kind of frustrating. I didn't understand (at ALL) why you did anything you did.

as an aircraft maintainer i can confirm how hard it is to swap an engine in flight.
In a dog fight, falling out of the sky, under 10k feet of altitude, no less. That F16 had to have the best maintainers in the world.

@@SupaMan2122 probably desync. the shots hit the damage registered and then the serves said "nah, it didn't hit lets roll back the damage"
Hey GS, not sure if you know but the Mirage has a predictive gunsight mode that you can turn on beneath the HUD. All it does is give you a shoot cue when the shots are likely to land, but it's super helpful when you're already pulling lead and want to fire immediately without waiting for the circle to catch up.

@@a64dx86 The viggen is known for its compressor stalls when doing low speed high AoA maneuvers. When that happens, repeated bangs from the engine can be heard. It became a meme that those bangs are made by sven banging his hammer to get the engine working. Ofc, thats not true.
GS luck: hits opponents engine and it catches fire… fire goes out and engine preforms flawlessly.
Also GS luck: gets hit in his wingtip… loses engine, avionics, and all control over aircraft.

I can't remember if I've previously requested this or not, but I would really appreciate if you would pay homage to the F-8 Crusader; the last gunfighter! Vietnam pilots loved this dogfighter, and I would be so fascinated with a growling sidewinder dogfight in that beast! I loved the viper-mirage fight! so good!
You're gonna have to wait a few years before it makes it to DCS.

Great vid as always GS. Given all the Viper stuff lately, you’ve shown how to “persistence hunt” with 2-circle tactics. I’d love to see a more like this video, showing how to press 1-circle attacks. Things like offset turn circles, or other techniques to counter a competent rate-fighting opponent that won’t just overshoot and allow 1-circle reversal opportunities. Would love to see some Hornet, too.

I mean, as a pilot, that's exactly what you'd want to do if you had a fire in your only engine (not that I'm a pilot, though my best mate is).

But you CAN do that in DCS. You can shut down an engine and you can start an engine.
Was the fire suppressed by a lower altitude air pressure?

I think any delta wing fighter should always avoid going into a circular dogfight with a high thrust/weight ratio conventional config fighter

I wonder if 5th gen bvr fights would tend to go to visual range. 5th gen fighters have a hard time seeing each other with radar which would seem to point to merges and dogfights.
Probably but it would still be interesting to see. Good way to compare stealth aspects as well as radar capabilities.

The last fight was incredible. The Mirage is a potent fighter against the Viper, but also hard to maintain the upper edge onto the enemy.
And of course, this fight was somewhere over the Aegean sea... 😁
Hey, I had a pretty dumb idea for a dog fight. It would be quite funny to see the F-15 vs the Mig 15.
It would be interesting, the Mig is a slippery, small turn fighter. I wouldn't be surprised if the Mig could stay on the tail of the Eagle at will at slow speeds ( for the Eagle at least).
Hey GS, great video as always! Just wondering what specifically makes an aircraft a better one circle or better two circle fighter. It seems to me being able to turn quickly while maintaining energy is the important thing in both types of fights, but I know I’m missing something. Thanks!
Might be like how much AoA it can pull, aircraft with more AoA are gonna get nose on first and have less energy retention and better slow speed control therefore one circle type, the opposite applies to the two circle aircraft, correct me if I’m wrong I believe that’s how it works
Higher roll rate also makes for a better 1 circle fighter as you’ll be needing it to get sharp turns in scissors
Generally aircraft with higher degrees of nose authority and stability at high angles of attack are good 1-Circle fighters as they can typically cut into opponents turn circles, trading rate speed for a tight radius and instant agility. Aircraft that like to maintain their speed even at high G-Forces are generally very good 2-Circle fighters as they generally have a high rate speed which allows them to work over an opponent while staying out of reach for weapons employment (usually guns)
In a one circle fight, each pilot is fighting to stay behind the other, the tighter the turn radius the better, because both planes are both moving in the same relative direction, in a two circle, it’s about catching their tail, so it’s about how fast you can come around a circle.
to use car terms, one circle fights are a drift competition, 2 circle fights are a NASCAR race.

I have a lot of respect for the mirage, in a high altitude situation, against most adversaries, it would get its not nose around quicker post merge giving it first shot advantage, in a situation where it has missiles thats pretty deadly
I think a dogfight with f104 against mig 21 would be cool

in that 3rd fight, i have no clue how you managed to flip the script on the viper once you guys were on the deck in a rate fight but jesus that was beautiful to see.
He goes into the vertical to cut the circle in half. When he doesn't get the shot on the way down the viper reverses into the one circle because the mirage is at this point pretty fast. When the viper didn't win that first one circle, he didn't ditch out and kept trying, and the mirage is just going to win.
He should have just ditched after he didn't make the shot.

I think the F-16's biggest weakness is the fact that it has just one engine. I mean, if you lose an engine on an F-16, that's it. It's over. Of course, the Mirage 2000 has the same weakness.

At the end of your videos, especially when doing the TacView, you should talk to whoever you flew against and kinda see what they were thinking during certain times in the fights. Could be interesting take on whats going through your opponents mind when trying to bait them into a slow 1 circle fight. Also if you've seen the latest Devotion trailer, theres a part where a MiG 15 dogfights 1 or 2 Corsairs. I know theyre coming to DCS so that could be an interesting video, or even use the P-51 in its place? Korean era dogfighting. Just a few thoughts. Anyways thanks for continuing with the amazing content!

I'm sure this has been asked but, as I have not tried DCS yet. Do you have to restart each fight from the ramp, calibrating the INS, the weapons, engine start and taxi takeoff?
I had that same flaming engine glitch fighting the viper recently guessing it must have come with the last patch.

Can you start giving descriptions on the type of ammunition each aircraft uses (ex: incendiary, explosive, fragmentary, or just straight lead) and possibly the caliber? Only reason I ask is because in round two, you took out his engine with one round (from what I can see) and I want to know what type of ammunition the 2000 was using
It’s always HEI just with out without tracer
But ya I can try and remember the calibre, but general rule of thumb is American is often 20mm with the exception of the a10 and Russian is almost always 30mm with the exception of the mig15 I think maybe also the mig21 I’m not sure about the mig21

The mirage 2000 is an awesome dogfighter, the only irritating thing with it is the horrible gun sight, I personally think it is the worse radar assited gun sight we have in DCS for a 4th gen aircraft by a landslide.

Hey GS, just thought of a video suggestion. How effective is the reverse thruster on the viggen at forcing an overshoot? For a lackluster dogfighter it would be nice to know if it could make a one trick pony much like the cobra on the su33
I believe reverse thrust only works when there's weight on the nose wheel of the plane meaning it cannot be used in flight.
Pretty much what Gravity said. Its intended mainly to make the viggen more maneuvorable while on improvised runways like roads & shorten landing distance. There is no way to overide it in flight, it can only be "prepared" to activate the moment the nosewheel touches the ground.
