The funniest (and saddest) part is that the best Uncharted movie was that fan-made short film featuring Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake. That short film captured more of what makes Uncharted fun than... the Uncharted movie.
If they even went in that direction with how true to the games it is, it could have been so special. I love that short film with Nathan Fillion, it's bloody awesome.
They cast this movie like they wanted it to fail, hired a director with the most painfully mediocre IMDB page you've ever seen, and had it written by people who clearly glanced at the Uncharted Wikipedia page once and went "Oh so like Indiana Jones".

I think the best movie that actually did a good uncharted vibe is the: 2011 the adventures of Tintin. That movie is really underrated, I would definitely watch it if you guys want a uncharted kinda movie.

Nathan Fillion should've been the pick for Nathan Drake. How can a Fan Film do better in a 15 min video than a full blown movie. Come on Sony, you need to look at fan feedback and actually look at the better picture. Joe, you need to do a reaction to Uncharted Fan Film. Remember how Mark Wahlberg failed miserably at playing Max Payne? These are two of my favorite game franchises of all time and Mark Wahlberg effed up both movie adaptations. Demote him to Netflix movies full-time.
Every previous game characters are all bastardized in this film. -Nate has a boyish attitude that the game version would never have -Sully is selfish and greedy, while the game Sully would literally go to the ends of the earth for Nate. You would think that after he got Sam killed (or so he thought), he would look after Nate like a son, like how the GAME VERSION LITERALLY DOES, but nope. I personally believe Sully got the worst of it. He doesn’t even get referred to as Victor "GODDAMN" Sullivan once. -Chloe backstabs literally EVERYONE in this film. Holy shit was she abysmal, all because she has "trust issues" from when she was like fucking 10 years old. -Navarro was far from a good villain in the game, but they strapped a fucking eyepatch on him? Really? -Sam is really the only accurate character. Didn't dig the facial hair, though. -Not once does Elena get mentioned. Not even a freaking REFERENCE.
I thought the 15 minute fan made video with Nathan Fillion and Stephen Lang was 1000% more accurate to the games and was actually fun to watch. They should of just used those guys

There are plenty of people in the world that only want to watch live-action and refuses to watch anything else so thats why they make live-action movies based on cartoons, anime, video games and comics because those people will refuse to watch it if its not live-action.

I don't know how guys like him, Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson are always in some huge budget summer blockbuster, they have no range and play the same characters, how the world hasn't gotten tired of seeing the Rock pan toward the camera, smolder, crack a joke and fight in some ridiculous action sequence is beyond me.
Quite a few movies I've liked him in. Shooter, Deepwater Horizon, Patriots Day, and both Ted Movies. I could count the Happening but that one is defintely more on the side of a guilty pleasure.
I think Tom Holland is a fine actor for what he does, but he definitely looks too young to be playing Nathan Drake. Nathan Drake requires a man in his early 30s to early 40s.
The Nathan Fillion uncharted was so great that they even made you feel as if you were in the game at one point. Now that’s how you cater to a video game audience.
It’s a toss up for me. I loved the fan film he did but..he’s old for the role. I think He is over 50…I’d imagine Sony would want to make this into a franchise assuming this one goes well and if that’s the case they would def need a young gun.

It's not a bad idea just poorly executed and bad casting. I like Mark Walberg but he was not a good pick for Sully. Same with Tom Holland. Not a good pick for Nathan.
I think Tom Holland would be great in a "Teen Wolf" remake, he's just too young for this role, same with Marky Mark. If you're gonna slap the Uncharted name on it you need to cast actors faithful to the source material. The Uncharted name is used to attract fans of the game, so give them the characters they know.
Holland and Mark should make 64 episodes of live action series and have the first 16 episodes be an origin story, then the next 8 be Golden abyss and the next be the first Uncharted.

The worst part was the casting, I still agree with that, but swap out just a few things here and there with the video game franchise and I think this would be a decent game from Naughty Dog. If it wasn't like this, they would be complaining that it wasn't like the source material. It feels like the lesson here is "video games and movies are mediums where suspension of disbelief and expectations are too wildly different to ever hold up to one another" ie no video game will hardly ever make a 10/10 movie and movie franchises translated into games will hardly ever yield a 10/10 game.

These guys are way too hard on the show. They complain about how ridiculous some of the stuff that happens in this movie and even say it went "off the rails". Like seriously, have you played the games!? They complain about not enough character interactions and development like its not a two hour movie as opposed to a 4 long ass games. This movie felt like an uncharted adventure with all the glorious shlock that comes with it.
I remember when i watched National Treasure that movie felt like a Uncharted movie to me even though im not a huge fan of Nicholas Cage but the writing for that movie was done in a Uncharted style without trying to be.

If you look up young Nathan Drake Tom looks pretty similar..... I think people are just trying to find things to whine about and that's any movie on general nowadays, for me just enjoy the ride and be happy we even have a movie they could have just left uncharted in the gutter and never get anything again. I'm thankful they at least have us something.

Canonically Chloe was raised in Australia. There's no accent from the actress playing her. Believe me she's one of the worst casting choices in the movie. I also hate the pick of mark walberg as Sully. I can put up with Tom Holland. Still goes to show that the best uncharted movie remains the fan film staring Nathan Fillian. Nolan North excluded, he's still the best Nathan Drake out there.
@@Ye_Is_The_Way I wouldn’t go expecting real world logic in how characters act or how their world works in either the Uncharted movie or games. It’s basically a parody of every action movie trope combined.
Every movie version of games gets the same thing wrong every time. When you play a game, especially a game with a strong narrative, YOU are personally experiencing the events, reacting to the tension, personally earning the rewards and solving the mystery etc etc. For uncharted you become Drake, you move drake, you are jumping and running and shooting and so his sense of wonder and reward is your sense of wonder and reward. You build your relationship with the game world viscerally and physically over hours and hours. A movie is 1.5-3 hours long (at most) you cannot develop the same level of investment in the people and the story if you try to take from a 10 hour long game narrative and copy and paste into a 2 hour film. Movies will also take popular game events (which uncharted has overtly) paste them into the movie as if that is what we love most. The reason the clock tower and car chase in Thief's End works so well is A) you have half a game of build up to get here, there's tension and stakes B) YOU ARE CONTROLLING IT AND EXPERIENCING IT putting things like the plane in 5 minutes in miss, entirely, why it is enjoyable to have this in the game. "Watching this is far less engaging than playing it" This 1000% A movie is not a game and must develop its narrative and characters in an utterly distinct and different way or all movie adaptations will suck
I couldn’t agree more man, I think you are spot on with your assessment on why these video game movies always fail. Honestly I think the best way to adapt these games into live action is not to make them movies but make them into a tv series like they are doing with the last of us on HBO max for example. That way you have several hours over the course of multiple episodes and potentially multiple seasons to develop the characters and the storylines. Because like you said they are taking 8-10 hour games like the uncharted games and trying to fit them into a 2 hour film and on top of that for some reason they randomly take stuff from all the different games in a series and try to throw it all together in 1 film. Like if you look at the most recent resident evil movie that’s supposed to be like a reboot and start a new series of films more closely following the storyline of the main games. It’s a 2 hour film yet they tried to cram 2 whole games into the storyline instead of just focusing on 1. The movie felt so rushed because half of it was RE1 with the mansion incident stuff then all the sudden the movie turns into RE2 and even stuff from RE3 like what happens to the city at the very end to stop the outbreak. These Hollywood directors just have no clue what to do with these video game adaptions
Which begs the question : Why didn't they develop an Uncharted TV Series. Granted, it would be an expensive production with all the action-sequenses , but you would better connect with the main chararacters, even if you've never played the videogames. Compressing most of the games in a two-hour movie was never going to work. Plus, the casting was terrible in my opinion. So, the end result is mediocre at best.
@@JohnSTF72 honestly no idea. Possibly because as a massive franchise it gets a fast track to the producers office. Hollywood Is big on guaranteed IP's and on paper a movie adaption of a widely celebrated and successful game franchise is a sure fire hit. TV takes more risks (which means it would have been better) but Hollywood is still the one with the most money to throw at these things. Who knows, perhaps they won the rights to the screenplay?
Too many issues with this one, casting in particular. But I still preferred it to Red Notice. Tom Holland stealing that bracelet from a seemingly random woman who's nothing to hurt him. Really? 4 huge urns of salt hiding one little map? How did Sully get to the galleons? There was no other boat there, did he helicopter in?

Can be too cynical sometimes, but that's how he is, sometimes you have to let go of the cynicism and enjoy dumb products. I used to be just as cynical and grumpy, but it's good to have some balance

I disagree, having to disconnect from a beloved franchise just to enjoy their shitty movie adaptation is the equivalent of blindly giving up your money to the studios. It would’ve been better if nobody went to see it and it bombed cause then that would send a message to Hollywood. DO BETTER, we make too many excuses and give too many passes just to be disappointed as fans and casual movie goers.
Personally, that line of thinking only works if someone doesn't have experience in any previous title. Like if Sticker Star was someone's first Paper Mario game, they'd like it fine. But for someone who's played 64 through Super, they see the problems.
The problem with this movie is that we've grown to love the characters and the voices attached to them. The cast for the games is perfect. They get the characters. They fully embody them through their voice work. If you were to take Nolan North, Richard McGonagle, and Emily Rose out of the equation, you'd get this movie. Without that cast, Uncharted is just a fairly mediocre treasure hunt story. It's what the actors do with it that elevates the characters and the material. Tom Holland is no Nolan North, and Mark Wahlberg is definitely no Richard McGonagle.

I don't know... I had a fun time with it. Mark Whalberg was a big miss as sully, but I thought Holland was okay (especially when he is wearing the uncharted 3 flashback clothing in the aftercredits). I think there is potential in a sequel to vastly improve on things. I'd give it a 6. Kinda felt the same as I did with the Tomb Raider reboot. Parts of it felt rushed and I think it's hard to jam an 8 hourish story into 2 hours.

No one has an open mind they are all closed off I already knew it would not be as good as the games if you all expected it too be better then the games then you set yourself up to hate it. I want the movie to be a success too see what a sequel can bring if it can be better I think too many are comparing it too the games that are leaps ahead of everything those are masterpieces and can never be topped.
Sully never betrayed Nate, he manipulated/used him and withheld information he knew would compromise the mission. He also never left Sam behind, he was basically put in the same situation Nate was in when he escaped the prison in U4, run or die.

@@Murph_gaming Uncharted was not in the works when Shawn was still in charge. It was hinted that there will be an incharted movie and tlou movie. Shawn decided to call it quits in 2018. It was right after when Andrew House another great executive called it quits in 2017. They didnt even cast for uncharted yet. It doesnt take 4 years to make a movie. The casting was implemented in 2019 and started shooting late 2019 then pandamic happen so stop for a bit then finish up in 2021. You can tell by watching the movie it was rushed and didnt make sense. Maybe they decided on the casting and Shawn didnt like where the direction is going so he quit but I think he quit cus he is just warned out. I think the direction of the company is some what part of why Andrew house and Layden quit. But I am sure he wouldnt OK with the shooting if it didnt do the game justice. Jim Ryan only sees dollar signs. He doesnt care if the movie make sense. Character development will always be a problem with movie adaptations of video games. There's probably over 300 hours of play time in all the games. You can't capture that with movies.

-Sully is selfish and greedy, while the game Sully would literally go to the ends of the earth for Nate. You would think that after he got Sam killed (or so he thought), he would look after Nate like a son, like how the GAME VERSION LITERALLY DOES, but nope. I personally believe Sully got the worst of it. He doesn’t even get referred to as Victor "GODDAMN" Sullivan once.
-Chloe backstabs literally EVERYONE in this film. Holy shit was she abysmal, all because she has "trust issues" from when she was like fucking 10 years old.

If you're gonna slap the Uncharted name on it you need to cast actors faithful to the source material. The Uncharted name is used to attract fans of the game, so give them the characters they know.
Holland and Mark should make 64 episodes of live action series and have the first 16 episodes be an origin story, then the next 8 be Golden abyss and the next be the first Uncharted.

It feels like the lesson here is "video games and movies are mediums where suspension of disbelief and expectations are too wildly different to ever hold up to one another" ie no video game will hardly ever make a 10/10 movie and movie franchises translated into games will hardly ever yield a 10/10 game.

@@Ye_Is_The_Way I wouldn’t go expecting real world logic in how characters act or how their world works in either the Uncharted movie or games. It’s basically a parody of every action movie trope combined.
Every movie version of games gets the same thing wrong every time.
When you play a game, especially a game with a strong narrative, YOU are personally experiencing the events, reacting to the tension, personally earning the rewards and solving the mystery etc etc.
For uncharted you become Drake, you move drake, you are jumping and running and shooting and so his sense of wonder and reward is your sense of wonder and reward.
You build your relationship with the game world viscerally and physically over hours and hours.
A movie is 1.5-3 hours long (at most) you cannot develop the same level of investment in the people and the story if you try to take from a 10 hour long game narrative and copy and paste into a 2 hour film.
Movies will also take popular game events (which uncharted has overtly) paste them into the movie as if that is what we love most.
The reason the clock tower and car chase in Thief's End works so well is A) you have half a game of build up to get here, there's tension and stakes
B) YOU ARE CONTROLLING IT AND EXPERIENCING IT
putting things like the plane in 5 minutes in miss, entirely, why it is enjoyable to have this in the game.

I couldn’t agree more man, I think you are spot on with your assessment on why these video game movies always fail. Honestly I think the best way to adapt these games into live action is not to make them movies but make them into a tv series like they are doing with the last of us on HBO max for example. That way you have several hours over the course of multiple episodes and potentially multiple seasons to develop the characters and the storylines. Because like you said they are taking 8-10 hour games like the uncharted games and trying to fit them into a 2 hour film and on top of that for some reason they randomly take stuff from all the different games in a series and try to throw it all together in 1 film. Like if you look at the most recent resident evil movie that’s supposed to be like a reboot and start a new series of films more closely following the storyline of the main games. It’s a 2 hour film yet they tried to cram 2 whole games into the storyline instead of just focusing on 1. The movie felt so rushed because half of it was RE1 with the mansion incident stuff then all the sudden the movie turns into RE2 and even stuff from RE3 like what happens to the city at the very end to stop the outbreak. These Hollywood directors just have no clue what to do with these video game adaptions
Surprisingly the only good videogame movie is the Sonic the Hedgehog movie
Which begs the question : Why didn't they develop an Uncharted TV Series. Granted, it would be an expensive production with all the action-sequenses , but you would better connect with the main chararacters, even if you've never played the videogames. Compressing most of the games in a two-hour movie was never going to work. Plus, the casting was terrible in my opinion. So, the end result is mediocre at best.

Too many issues with this one, casting in particular. But I still preferred it to Red Notice. Tom Holland stealing that bracelet from a seemingly random woman who's nothing to hurt him. Really? 4 huge urns of salt hiding one little map? How did Sully get to the galleons? There was no other boat there, did he helicopter in?
I laugh every time I see Tom Holland as Nathan Drake. Its nothing against Tom Holland, its just that he shouldn't have got the part to begin with. I honestly don't know how you can mess up this bad in casting? Like who did the hiring?? I would have rather have a nobody star who I've never seen before. Then get this miscast of a mess. I still haven't seen this movie btw, and probably won't because I'm that annoyed by the casting choice. Anyone whos even remotely played The Uncharted Series would know Tom Holland was not the pick!!! (Sorry Tom Holland, I think your a great actor btw)

Alex is the main event of these kind of videos, I love his personality, really good communication skills. Can be too cynical sometimes, but that's how he is, sometimes you have to let go of the cynicism and enjoy dumb products. I used to be just as cynical and grumpy, but it's good to have some balance

I agree with Alex; you put that name Uncharted there and you create expectations especially from us who played all 4 games. My friends said it wasn't bad if you distance yourself from the game....and me and my girl can't. Prolly why it was sub par for us, pity.
I agree with them I disconnected and could have some fun but this is not Uncharted.
They should've called it something else, the cast would get people in seats regardless of the title, why try to bank on gamers when you know we'll hate it? How Hollywood still fucks these video game movies up is beyond me.
I disagree, having to disconnect from a beloved franchise just to enjoy their shitty movie adaptation is the equivalent of blindly giving up your money to the studios. It would’ve been better if nobody went to see it and it bombed cause then that would send a message to Hollywood. DO BETTER, we make too many excuses and give too many passes just to be disappointed as fans and casual movie goers.
Personally, that line of thinking only works if someone doesn't have experience in any previous title. Like if Sticker Star was someone's first Paper Mario game, they'd like it fine. But for someone who's played 64 through Super, they see the problems.
The problem with this movie is that we've grown to love the characters and the voices attached to them. The cast for the games is perfect. They get the characters. They fully embody them through their voice work. If you were to take Nolan North, Richard McGonagle, and Emily Rose out of the equation, you'd get this movie. Without that cast, Uncharted is just a fairly mediocre treasure hunt story. It's what the actors do with it that elevates the characters and the material. Tom Holland is no Nolan North, and Mark Wahlberg is definitely no Richard McGonagle.

I don't know... I had a fun time with it. Mark Whalberg was a big miss as sully, but I thought Holland was okay (especially when he is wearing the uncharted 3 flashback clothing in the aftercredits). I think there is potential in a sequel to vastly improve on things.
I'd give it a 6. Kinda felt the same as I did with the Tomb Raider reboot. Parts of it felt rushed and I think it's hard to jam an 8 hourish story into 2 hours.
Like Alex said "If you are one of those people that have ever like stood up on your couch and gave a standing ovation to a commercial this may be the exact movie for you."
No one has an open mind they are all closed off I already knew it would not be as good as the games if you all expected it too be better then the games then you set yourself up to hate it. I want the movie to be a success too see what a sequel can bring if it can be better I think too many are comparing it too the games that are leaps ahead of everything those are masterpieces and can never be topped.

Sully never betrayed Nate, he manipulated/used him and withheld information he knew would compromise the mission.
He also never left Sam behind, he was basically put in the same situation Nate was in when he escaped the prison in U4, run or die.

Uncharted was not in the works when Shawn was still in charge. It was hinted that there will be an incharted movie and tlou movie. Shawn decided to call it quits in 2018. It was right after when Andrew House another great executive called it quits in 2017. They didnt even cast for uncharted yet. It doesnt take 4 years to make a movie. The casting was implemented in 2019 and started shooting late 2019 then pandamic happen so stop for a bit then finish up in 2021. You can tell by watching the movie it was rushed and didnt make sense. Maybe they decided on the casting and Shawn didnt like where the direction is going so he quit but I think he quit cus he is just warned out. I think the direction of the company is some what part of why Andrew house and Layden quit. But I am sure he wouldnt OK with the shooting if it didnt do the game justice. Jim Ryan only sees dollar signs. He doesnt care if the movie make sense. Since Tom Holland is a hot thing now a days with Spider he think Tom Holland will be great at being Nathan Drake when in reality he looks like a kid even if he is in his 20's.

Character development will always be a problem with movie adaptations of video games. There's probably over 300 hours of play time in all the games. You can't capture that with movies.
300 is probably a little exaggerated, but it's certainly alot more than a 2 hour movie.

300? All those games put together don't even add up to 50 hours of gameplay from the main story.

Took my 9 yr old to see it, as I was eye rolling at the over the top play on physics, my son turned to me and said “this is the best movie ever!” I realized this isn’t for me, it’s for 9 year old me 😉
The games are already essentially playable action movies, so a film feels redundant.
I find it fascinating how joe can be really good at reviewing games, but be awful at shows/movies. Giving boba fett episodes 10/10, that show was awful. Liking this? Wtf

It’s all opinions like Joe defends supper-man cause that’s his favourite character and lots of those movies were bad all I can say is take their opinions as there own and see the movie for yourself then you can compare if you liked it or you agree with them that it’s bad.
