@Erwin Lii the thing is, mulan is powerful for the wrong reasons in the live-action take.
She is born powerful. She didn't earn her powers. She didn't work to gain a powerful chi.
In the animated movie, she earned her power and earned the respect of the fellow soldiers by hard work and dedication and using her brain.
It is much more interesting and inspiring to see someone mediocre earn their power and become a legend, than see someone born powerful just stay the same.

The Chinese government has made it so that no foreign company, even one as big as Disney, can do business in China without a locally owned surrogate company to do their business for them. On top of all of that, the Chinese government has a long list of rules that any movie, game, song, or book being published within their borders has to comply with. If Disney doesn't do either of these things, they can't sell their movie to that 1.4 billion people, which equates to a lot of potentially missed sales.

Mulan didn't set out to be a badass warrior or prove herself against men, that was just an awesome byproduct of her trying to survive and maintain honor. She genuinely cared about her country, her family, and her brothers in arms and that drover her to stay, to train, and to fight.

    • @Wiccanwolf08
      @Wiccanwolf08 4 года назад +24

@@Don11037 Even worse than that is the fact that the movie contradicts *its own* message. Xian Lang (the witch) at one point tells Mulan that her chi is being held back because she is lying to herself by dressing up as a man. However, Mulan is dressing up as a man not because she *wants* to dress up in men's clothes to express her chi, but because she *has* to dress up as a man in order to get into the army. She will literally be killed if she joins as a woman.
Additionally, Xian Lang throws a knife at Mulan's chest to kill her, but she is saved because she is still wearing her chest brace, something that she was ONLY wearing to conceal her gender. If she hadn't been wearing this and pretending to be a man, she would have died. This scene goes against the lesson that we were JUST given.

When i was small my self esteem was very low because i wasn't born as privileged as my classmates, i wasn't from wealthy family, i wasn't pretty, i wasn't really talented etc etc. but stuff like Mulan helped me realize i can just *become* who i want to be what resulted with me learning art and languages all by myself in very young age.
Now Mulan remakes came out and it did COMPLETE OPPOSITE of what original did - it tells girls you have to be born the certain way or practice since being a fetus to be worth anything, again, they did the exact same with other remakes.
It's not female empowerment, female empowerment is showing characters that are human, flawed but still capable of overcoming obstacles because this is something women and girls can relate to.
2020's Mulan is some goddamn personalityless one man army on steroids but always with great hair, good luck relating to that.

Honestly, I kinda hate what they did to the father's character? It seems like everyone on the internet just lets it slide because there are bigger things to chew on, but for me, a *huge* part of the original animation was that father character, and how he is always supportive of Mulan and appreciates her for her. I think Mulan 1998 is very smart of showing it: father's fondness is never spelled out until that final scene that makes me cry every time it is even referenced, but his smile says everything in scenes he has no words, and the two times he goes off at Mulan that is obviously hurting him no less than Mulan herself.
Meanwhile, the movie father explicitly says he failed to raise Mulan the right way, and in the final scene he admits that to Mulan and says that only now that she majorly succeeded in the army he sees how awesome she actually is. It's something that 1998 Mulan would never ever do. I have to assume it's more of a personal thing for me than it is a bad thing for everyone, but for me, this unsupportiveness of the father stings on the same level as making Mulan a Mary Sue, so, basically destroys the whole story.

The original Mulan was female empowerment done right. I never, ever had a problem with that movie or the way it portrayed things, because it didn't feel forced and in your face. It wasn't about Mulan being a rebel and going against tradition because it's stupid or whatever, but rather because it was something she felt she had to do. Ironically, even though she pretended to be a male in the animated film, she didn't have to throw away her femininity in the process. Which is so rare nowadays, when every strong female character has to act like a butch lesbian.

When all your dreams just magically come true because you are a women than yea you could write a story about that.

There are costume dramas on love that you want to see, including martial arts dramas, fairy tales, official historical dramas, palace fighting dramas, time travel dramas, and many of them are very good to see, because we have many kinds of dramas, many of which are adapted from novels, and because we have complete historical materials and cultural relics, many of our historical dramas have a very high degree of restoration, exquisite production and very good music. I was really looking forward to seeing Mulan even though there’re no Mushu and Crickee but they missed tons of things. For the people who are saying it’s inspired by the original ballad blah blah,, but they made a remake, they have to keep the impactful scenes with the original music in the movie.
    1. No Shang
    2. No grandma
    3. No “Decision scene”
    4. No dialogue between characters
    5. No friendship & strong bond
    6. No emotion
    7. No impactful scenes
    8. No character development
    9. No struggle ( you just have to born with a magical superpower then you will achieve anything - which is so unrealistic from realistic movie they are saying)
    10. No songs at all- I was ok with it’s not musical but there have to be songs in a movie. Even non-disney movies have songs!
    11. Unconnected scenes
    12. The most importantly they missed the main message of Mulan.
Actually the most of the actors are capable of doing anything specially the funny soldiers and mulan’s love interest but they had barely lines. Overall I’m really dissapointed.

The first Mulan movie I felt had so many powerful messages like perseverance is something you choose to have, not something you are born with. And there's more than one kind of strength, if you can't beat an enemy through straight up slugging hands, then beat him with your mind. And rely on people who rely on you. By living a life where you never give up and you protect those you love, you bring honor to everyone around you.
The new Mulan movie: Lmao just run on walls and stab everyone noob, why try at anything when you're already perfect kek.

It seriously sounds like what they did with Star Wars, namely Rey.
A character who already has all the ability, gains the power and is essentially unstoppable because of her "Chi"/"Force".

Who was the writer for this project? Their past work might shed some light on why they chose to go this route.

HA HA HA. Must be a funny joke to morons... Except that many morons like the three up there in the vid may not know that the ROURANS were an actual tribe. The nomadic tribes of the north were called the ROURANS around that timepoint in history to which the Ballad of Mulan was traced back to. The ROURANS were the ancestors of the Mongols and the Avars. It is a term by which the Chinese refer to the northern nomadic tribes of that time period, while the word “moron” is an English word with a Greek root, clearly these two words have nothing to do with each other nor are they similar in any meaningful, non-retard way.
It seems like many MORONS don’t understand the basic concept of “different languages”...

Phantomsight_pain How exactly? Have the Rourans declare before every battle that they are not the Mongols or the Huns? (The mongols haven’t even existed yet then). It’s fine that people don’t know, but I think it is in bad taste to make fun of a word from another language, esp. when it comes from complete ignorance. Them saying it once is fine, but he couldn’t stop himself from giggling over it all throughout the vid. It is perfectly common for a language to have words that sound like another not-so-nice word in another language. I don’t effing get what’s funny about it.

They basically turned mulan into Rey and introduced chi instead of the force. They took away every single aspect of Mulan's character, determination and hard training and replaced it with a "chosen one" storyline. Every movie Disney makes nowadays feels the same and this is sad.

So they basically took Mulan and made her the chinese version of Rey from Disney Star Wars.
