The mutant masks weren't scrapped designs, they were a gimmick put there on purpose to give the figures some extra play value. They represent the character going through an intermediate state between beast and robot. This first year of Beast Wars figures aimed a lot towards that sort of "extreme" and "gross out" aesthetic, hence Cheetor's gut gun, Dinobot's skull mask and split tail weapon, Optimus Primal using a skull as a mace, Rattrap's robot mode head having an exposed brain (because his robot head is inside the rat head in beast mode), etc. Like this were suposed to be robots who turned into actual beasts, a proper fusion of robotic and organic. Also, it's not noticeable in this figure, but when you get to Primal you'll notice that another guiding principle of this toyline was "EVERY ACCESSORY HAS TO BE ABLE TO INCONSPICUOSLY STORE IN BEAST MODE.". And I love that. Makes accessories way harder to lose. Beast Wars was my introduction to Transformers, so having loose accessories when the figure is in alt mode still feels wrong to me.
Ahh I remember owning that figure and Beast wars in general, was and still is one of the best things that ever happened to my childhood , glad you viewed this charm
man so many memories with this figure! one of my first BW figures when i started collecting the line i was in Uni when i started i think... good times! that tail gimmick really has that flaw even with the original toy, at least when i had him back in the 90s... well done as always bro 👍🏻😀
I can definitely see how these vintage figures will be nostalgic for some people I might get 1 or 2 of these vintage figs but I do prefer the Kingdom versions more
The arm gimmick doesn't work because the small spring inside the tip of the tail is under too much tension for the gears. Open the tail and remove the spring and it will work again. You may also consider trying to remove and stretch the spring a little so it provides less tension and put back in. ^_^
They screwed up the left arm! It's not supposed to be fully extended its supposed to sit where you'd expect and when you press the button it lunches out and snaps like a claw! Either they didnt know how to assemble it correctly or you got a bugged one.
That's because it's technically mistransformed, you are supposed to lock the arm in the correct position yourself and are only supposed to open the claw when you want to use the extending claw gimmick.
To answer your question, last time we had firing missiles was Combiner Wars Megatron and the Jetfire/Seekers, all of which were leader class. And I'd love for missile launcher gimmicks to come back, but I can live without the rest.
The first Beastwars toy ever for me, I’m really a old guy, G1 Transformers was mine introduction in the 80’s. Have a lot G1 Transformers, and some movie Transformers. Love this Megatron and love the Beastwars cartoon😃❤️
I almost yelled too damn loud in the walmart aisle today when I was browsing the toy section, I literally could not believe I saw these toys on the shelf! it is freaking awesome they have reissued these figures from the 90s I really really want to get one, I was a huuuuge fan of beast wars and actually did have a few figures back then like cheetor or rattrap, I also had the rhino character, I thought they were the coolest! this is freaking mind blowing! I need them!
Okay I bought this reissue yesterday and for someone who was born in 2005 I only knew the movies until my father found a site and I 4 year old me was planted watched this semi decently animated TV show. Many years later I'm rewatching the beast wars series and still enjoy it
I just found this today at Walmart. I wanted to buy it so badly. Just out of my price range. Maybe next time. I've been a huge fan of Beast Wars since I was very young, owning many of the different figures. Seeing them remade was amazing.
Great review PvP as always!!! This figure will be so nostalgic to old collectors and Hasbro did a right decision of re releasing beast wars figures!! Can't wait for you to review other re-releases of old beast wars figures!!
I feel so old; there are people on RUclips know that know more about toy design than I that did not grow up with Beast Wars. I remember watching this with my little step brother and translating.
First of all Beast Wars toys were designed and produced before the show was concieved. So of course they aren't too accurate to the show because desingers didn't have show to base the toys on. Mainframe then got the toys and adapted them to 3d models for the show. Original story for the toyline was vastly different from the show. It was modern day earth and Megatron was the same Megatron from G1, this is why he had silver bucket head. Beast modes were meant to be results of genetic experiments with organic tissue and their side effect were mutant heads. Also originally Megatron wasn't meant to be pruple t-rex, he was meant to be gray but it had slight purplish tint and mainframe interpeted it as purple t-rex. I would prefer if he had that silver head and if they weren't Walmar exclusives.
I actually had this when I was young, since I never was never around when beast wars was coming out I got the 10th anniversary one I believe from a thrift store. Sadly I think I might have gotten rid of/thrown him away when I cleaned up my room years back.
Been years since I played with Megatron, but I think you can lock the tail claw by ratcheting close the "back spine" in the unextended portion of his tail claw. It's current default is in the extended version.
Wait you weren't around when these figures were released? Are you about 20 years old? I remember watching the show outside some random people's home cause my parents wouldn't buy a TV so it wouldn't interrupt my studies
Man, I really prefer the colors on the original release. That silver helmet was just stood out. I wish they made the reissues as close as possible. That's kinda the point...
I got him for Christmas 1995-96? when I was a kid. I loved it. I always removed the "mask" on mine, it's on little pop out hinges and looked better to me as a kid. EDIT: It's so weird hearing kids these days call it vintage lol. What a weird time for me.
I was born in 99, but still grew up on the Beast wars show (re-runs) but never had the original Optimus primal or Megatron, so these are must haves for me. Is Vintage Primals head metallic or plain blue?
I never did get the 1st release of the Beast Wars figures. But I did get Cheetos, rhinox, and dinobot. But it did get the other versions (the Transmetal). Hope they will do those as well. Just a little info, did you know that the first concepts of Beast wars had Optimus as a bat and Megatron as an alligator? Plus they were sold as a two pack.
Great video, thank you! Do you have one for the Optimus Primal reissue as well? I am having trouble finding it. I grew up with G1 and got into Beast Wars later (shortly before Beast Machines came out). I became a fan very quickly thanks to the writing and characters. I had picked up some older reissues at one point, but these were no brainers for me. I have to get all of them (or at least the ones from the show). I love this Megatron. He is probably my all time favorite Megatron. I don't need the gimmicks, but I think they are fun. I really just love the simple transformation and build quality. I really miss that. I missed out on Animated and Prime the first go around, but they both have some solid designs and toys.
I never watched original Beast Wars, never even heard of it until 5 years ago or so. However, I did actually have a BW Megatron as a child - It was a cheap knock-off. Very wabbly and unstable, and I'm pretty sure the tail broke off soon after. And it wasn't purple, instead it was beige, which in my opinion looked a lot more realistic.
I have a preowned BW Megs, missing only one of the anchor missile things. I preordered the reissue so I can compare the two and enjoy a fully complete figure of BW Megatron haha
I've been debating on getting this, bc I already have the Kindgom Voyager but I've never transformed him. He's stayed in robot mode bc I'm scared to death I'm gonna break him. I've heard too many people say the same thing. I want a Beast Wars Megatron I can transform back and forth without the fear of it breaking.
I've never liked toys with gimmicks. However I'm a sucked for Optimus Primal toys. So I will be getting that reissue. This one? Dunno, not too hot about it
its not that they were going for children with simplicity its that they were constantly getting more and more complex with transformation since g1 this kept going til rid2001 which had some increadibly complex transformstions which were hard for children so they then worked on the unicron trilogy with simpler transformations
0:29 A lot older? Oh God...was it that long? I remember going to the mall seeing this and my grandmother buying it for me for doing well for my final exams and passing grade 1 or something...and I'm turning 32 4 days after this video was released.
These are good, but they shouldn't be the same price as current leader class figures because the engineering and designs are decades old. They should have been priced at least $10 cheaper.
The mutant masks weren't scrapped designs, they were a gimmick put there on purpose to give the figures some extra play value. Preach.
It's nice to see a comment from someone older than 15.
@@anthonybernero9720 Honestly, it'd be nice if most comments here were about that age. It means there's still new people coming into the fandom.

Couldn't afford this when I was a kid, so I bought it for my son. Love it!!
Sure. For "your son"
@@jesseramirez9062 I think he really could have kids cause most of the Transformers fandom is 20-40 yr olds

I might get 1 or 2 of these vintage figs but I do prefer the Kingdom versions more
The left arm panels are suppose to fold back all the way, and his arm is only meant to be pulled back for the claw gimmick.
Really?
The arm gimmick doesn't work because the small spring inside the tip of the tail is under too much tension for the gears. Open the tail and remove the spring and it will work again. You may also consider trying to remove and stretch the spring a little so it provides less tension and put back in. ^_^

Six months later I got him. At $15 I couldn't resist!
Walmart has dropped the price on these vintage ones to $20 now
To answer your question, last time we had firing missiles was Combiner Wars Megatron and the Jetfire/Seekers, all of which were leader class.

The most animation accurate version of this toy is the 10th anniversary one
@Albars I was talking about this mold of this beast wars megatron

This BW Megatron figure is awesome!
And his mutant(or battle) mask is not that bad in my opinion.
Also, it could appear in the upcoming beast war live-action film if possible.

I dont like gimmicks if they hinder articulation or the look of the figure. That's why I think automorph is one of the best gimmicks out there.
I never watched original series when they relise and i never watched at English but my head always had YEEESSS street.
Huh?
I feel so old; there are people on RUclips know that know more about toy design than I that did not grow up with Beast Wars.

Note that some show characters, like Waspinator and Tarantulas, used the mutant head.
Great review, I've always wanted one, this will be the right opportunity. Will you also do the Optimus Primal 2021 review?
I had this toy when I was about 3 or 4. It's so awesome to have it again as an adult
I’m so happy I got the Takara version of this a decade ago
Still though, hope hasbro releases the vintage transmetal megs :D
I will like to relive the dragon Megatron mode, because I dont have It when I Was a child and Hasbro can improve the figure very well!!
They’re making a new figure of Dragon Megatron next year
Looks cool, but the only Vintage Wave 1 figure I'm a little interested in is Cheetor. And that's just possible.

I prefer the colors on this one, especially the purple, and having a black head makes him more uniform.
He finally showed up at my Walmart.

I have the original 95 version and the headsculpt alone looks worth the buy
Beastwars had some of the best play gimmicks of any toy line.
“When the original figures were out I wasn’t even alive”
Holy crap now I feel ancient. I was 8 when the show and toys came out, it was my Transformers
Haha I’m sorry for that!

I’m a fan of the original BW figures. I have both original and 10th anniversary primal & Megatron figures
Never though barney could be this scary
I think his price is the same as the WFC Leaders, which might be better value for money than the new Leaders.
Too bad you dont have the original.. Would love to compare the differences, esp the accessories
I skipped the BW transformers, but found the Netflix Optimus Primal on clearance earlier this year. Now I found this at Ross for $12.99
if they can reissue toys from 1996, sure as hell they can reissue RID Carrobots toys.
i jut want Fire Convoy man
I just want Ultra Magnus of the Team Bullet Train and Landfill/Buildking
Takara did back in 2017 with magnus but it went for $300
Takara: bring back my son! Hasbro: fine, you get all of that screws and deliver them to me!

Picked up both Megatron and Optimus Primal at Walmart for $32 each since they were on Rollback
I have never seen someone do a good beast wars megatron impression
That is so true.
I got mine yesterday he was the last one at Walmart he's freaking awsome
I got mine today it shouldve been £50 but got it for £20 absolutely amazing figure to go with my Beast wars primal and tigertron
The tail was the most annoying part of this figure. 😭
Other than that, this figure is such an awesome birthday gift! 💕
I've always preferred the G1 transformers and vintage beast wars to any of the new stuff. Hopefully i can find this guy
.... Why doesn't the tail, come off as a weapon ??
Because this figure originally came out before the show premiered

I just got this today and I'm loving him
Megatron's altmode after more than 25 years had not much difference.
Kingdom Megatron looks like jurassic world t Rex
I want a battle mask gimmick on Kingdom Megatron
I do kinda wish that it had the original colours, but it doesn’t matter I will be customising is whole look do be 100% show accurate

Fun fact under the Dino head theres a water squirter that becomes the tongue
I did manage to get an original vintage one, but had to buy two to get one complete.

i just like the og transformers, they have their own style
Yessssss he uploaded
You were not born when this came out? Wow I feel old AF
The head of Megatron kinda looks like Devilman.
I would prefer a combination of both.
Without the Mutant Mask on his head looks like Bass from Mega Man
My favorite version of this mold is the 10th anniversary version
I've had the original since it came out, and I can tell you that if the water gun isn't working well, that's normal. lol
I think if they were to start making gimmicks that it would be neat just as long as it doesn’t get to bad..
These are good, but they shouldn't be the same price as current leader class figures because the engineering and designs are decades old. They should have been priced at least $10 cheaper.
I still have my original one :) it's an amazing figure :)
How much do you think it would cost today to produce the old megatron bw?
Why couldn’t they have included the head sculpt from the 10th Anniversary figure along with the extra paint details on chest area? They just got lazy.
Excellent. Yess
I hope hasbro does vintage reissue rhinox.
Whyd they change the head colour. I wouldve prefered the silver tbh
I guess ill get this guy cuz its impossible to me to get the kingdoms mold
Didn't the dino tongue also shoot water?
It does, kinda
Just wish it didn't look quite so phallic.
