- I went on an unexpected trip to Malaysia and decided to learn Malay during my trip there.
I've heard from many people about how similar Indonesian (which I know) is to Malay, but I didn't realize how similar they are.
In this video, I talk to random people and try to speak Malay. I hope this inspires people to speak with natives speakers even if you are not that good!

cara paling mudah, belajar dan fahami 80 perkataan yang biasa. for whatever languages, go for 80 basic common words. so you will be look great and friendly to locals.

Some common changes when switching between Indonesian and Malay (if you want to sound more authentically Malaysian and less like a tourist from Indonesia). Some of these are very subtle but a native speaker tends to be able to notice it immediately:
nggak/gak - tak
bisa - boleh
teman - kawan
udah - dah/sudah
mau - nak
coba - cuba (or cube)
universitas - universiti
Historically & factually, Indonesian & Malay are the same language because both languages are actually adopted from Malay standard of Johor-Riau (now Johor in Malaysia; Riau in Indonesia) before Indonesia renamed the Malay language name to "Bahasa Indonesia" (Indonesian language). Johor & Riau used to be under 1 kingdom (sultanate) & were using the same Malay dialect & standard. In fact, in 1st Youth Congress of 1926, Muhammad Yamin (the one who wrote the "Sumpah Pemuda" in 1928 after the 2nd Youth Congress of the same year) suggested Malay language as the national language of Indonesia. ----->> However, in that 1926 Youth Congress, Mohammad Tabrani Soerjowitjitro, had OBJECTED to the ORIGINAL NAME of the (Malay) language because he wanted it to relate to the name of the nation (Indonesia). Thus, in 1928 Youth Congress, Muhammad Yamin (secretary) renamed it to "Bahasa Indonesia" (Indonesian language) in "Sumpah Pemuda" (Youth Pledge). FYI, the grammar of Indonesian language is basically the grammar of "Pedoman Bahasa" (which is Malay language grammar book), written by Raja Ali Haji & since it was initially a "Malay language" before being renamed, of course it has a lot of Malay vocabulary just like in Malaysia's Malay language (national & official language of Malaysia). That's why both are actually the same language before its original name was politically changed.
Currently in Indonesia Bahasa Malayu (Malay language) consisting of Malay Vocabularies Only is still a regional language in Sumatera such as Riau, Jambi, Medan, & South Sumatera.
About Indonesian language, at the beginning Bahasa Indonesia was originally from Bahasa Malayu.
In development, Indonesian language (Bahasa Indonesia) is different from Malay language (Bahasa Malayu)
Time after time the vocabularies of other regional languages & foreign languages were added.
In Indonesian language, you can find the vocabularies of regional languages such as Malay, Javanese, Sundanese, Minangkabau , Balinese, Buginese, Madurese, Papuan, Minahasan, etc...
Up to 2008, KBBI Language Center added more than 3500 vocabularies of 70 regional languages as an Indonesian vocabularies. You can also find vocabularies of foreign languages (Arabic, India, China, Dutch) adopted as Indonesian vocabularies.
Indonesian language's development keeps going in the future; "Badan Pengembangan & Pembinaan Bahasa Indonesia" keeps adding new vocabularies from regional & foreign languages to keep up with the times.
i dont get why people act like there different languages. Theyre not 🤣🤣
,@@Jblah
In my many replies or comments over the many years, ...I am over 50, I tried to get people of both countries to recognise they're essentially speaking the same tongue but with different infections and vocabularies.
Invariably some on both sides get offended telling me their 'own' language can stand on its own which is rubbish 😅!
@@ibnLodin Only the uneducated and ignorant would disagree. The people that say theyre different languages are also the same people that say english, american and Australian are different languages 💀🤣You can say theyre different dialects, but they're definitely still the same language.

This is great. I am now studying Malay, I already know a fair amount of bahasa Indonesia, so I’m learning Malay fairly quickly. But I live in Thailand, and hardly know any Thai.
I am amazed Kru Grace! You speak 10 languages and added one more!!?? Am thoroughly impressed!
Thank you!
How interesting - I love both Malaysia and Thailand! I visited Penang and Phuket in summer last year and I am still under the charm of the two charming places!
Indonesian language is actually Malay language. Only some words are different but majority is the same. The Indonesians called it Bahasa Indonesia just so they could have their "own language"
indonesian language derived from malay riau dialect
the only difference is that indonesian language have varierity of loanwords and words from different tribes and ethnics languages

Basic Malay is easy because it is written in roman alphabets but the formal and correct Malay is much more difficult unless you have many years of full time practice.
Why is it more hard ,??
The formal version of English isn’t too easy either. You can have a conversation. That doesn’t mean you can read science papers or take a college course. Every natural language has their different registers and common speech will always be the easiest and most useful.
@@ilune22There's 2 type of Malay. Baku (high Malay), Pasar (street Malay). Most Malaysian speak street Malay, still correct for both because during Sultanate of Malacca, there is a clear division between the Royalty upper class and the farmers and fishermen.
@@ilune22Even the Malays themselves commit grammatical errors when they write, and these errors are basic ones.
The formal Malay is also easier compared to other languages.

If you want to speak to local, find a malay. Malay generally more friendly and accommodating
Bahasa Indonesia actually is one of so many Malay dialects, not the Malay mother tongue. Malay national language called Bahasa Melayu Deli (@ jeli - pure & clearly).
😊
Bahasa Indonesia & Bahasa Melayu are almost similar. But of course there are difference in some words. And the major difference is the prounouciation & spoken slang
Root language of indonesian language is Malay..later developed with mixes of dialects in indonesia provinces and dutch..giving birth to current indonesian language..so if anyone who know indonesia language should be able to learn Malay in 1 week.. although many indonesia doesn’t agree with this..but to many Malaysians the written (not spoken) bahasa indonesia is basically Malay language but indonesian version..like english but there’s american, British, or australian..or arabic but yemenis..quraisy..egypt..morrocan etc..
you spoke malay like a local malaysian chinese
Haha I didn’t know that

You did good. Well done👍 Spoken Malay is, generally, not too difficult to acquire but the language has many nuances and wide semantics. A western linguist once said of mastering the Malay Language, 'the more you learn, the more you don't know' 😅
Bahasa Melayu ada slang juga, utara, pantai timur, negeri sembilan. Sangat unik.
I'm Judy from Philippines also.a languages learner I'm currently learning Spanish and French planning to add Indonesian and malay😊
Awesome!
4. banyakkan dengar musik melayu
Hi Grace,
Interesting vlog on languages. 👍
Just FYI, Indonesian language is actually Malay but with different slangs as they have many islands. Only announced as 'Indonesian' language in the 1940s when they gained independence from the Dutch, to unite their people. The base/root is the Malay language.
Just like the Malay language in Southern Thailand. Only the slang is different but the root is Malay. The Malay language has been the lingua franca of the region (from Southern Thailand) throughout the Malay Archipelago, which includes now Malaysia, Indonesia, most of the Philippines, the Borneo & parts of Southern Myanmar, eversince the Melaka Sultanate empire in the 15th century.
Cheers & have a good & safe travel.
You are a fast learner. Amezing video waiting for Hindi language 🇮🇳
Nice try Grace..semoga makin fasih Dan lancar dalam pengunaan bahasa lain yang telah anda pelajari👍
The Dutch adopted the Malay language because it's fairly simple than Javanese. It's funny you look at it the other way but it's ok.
The various corner's dialect speakers in the then Indonesia can't unifiedly communicable in Javanese and the Dutch found the Malay language better understandable by the region, that's why they adopted in view of managing their colony.
The Javanese administrator later changed it to Bahasa Indonesia after independence for the purpose of national identity. So too with Malaysia, changing it too Bahasa Malaysia. Everyone was getting fanatically patriotic....Thanks to the colonisers British and Dutch. Divide and conquer stuff....if you know what I mean.
How do you find Javanese...easy?
Hebatnya Grace sudah lancar cakap Melayu slang Cina Malaysia
Learning Indonesian or Malay is always a because you will get two languages instead of one😉
Yeah that’s true haha
Tidak hanya 2 negara saja, tapi juga bisa untuk bercakap di Brunei, Singapore, some parts of Thailand, Phillippines, Timor Leste, mungkin Suriname.
Amazing!
Awesome!
Me agrada mucho este canal

If you know Indonesian (native speaker) you will know Malay in about a week and vice versa
Just shows the origins of that lingo then...

Belajar Bahasa Melayu dalam tempoh satu bulan sahaja...sungguh hebat kamu...sedangkan saya hanya mampu mengingati 26 alphabet thai dalam tempoh setahun dan masih banyak lagi alphabet thai yang belum mampu dihafal....sungguh lemah saya...
In terms of pronunciation it’s a bit different from Indonesian
Like British n American English
But generally in Malaysia we do understand Indonesian
No problem in understanding
But I can’t say the same for most Indonesians to understand Malay..
I think a part is we Malaysians are exposed to the world in general
It is easier for Malaysians to understand Indonesian Malay than Indonesians to understand Malaysian Malay, just like it is easier for British to understand American English than Americans to understand British English. It is because of the accent.
Spoken Indonesian is roughly the same as it written form, while spoken Malaysian is almost entirely different dialect from it written form. As for example, Indonesians would pronounce the word "ajar" as "ajar" but Malaysians (with exception to Sabahan) would pronounce it as "aja" (the R is silent).
Wow you are amezing 💕🙂🤙
Thank you!
Mau and Nak also means the same in Malay FYI
Yes, its is in street malay language but in formal or baku malay language its means mahu or hendak. Mahu and hendak is the full word for mau and nak fyi😊
Daging means meat but in Malaysia, colloquially it means "beef" . Beef is known as Lembu. I'm also learning Malay ... wow your Malay is good ! Bagusnya !
Malay is easier to learn if one knows English as the words are in latin alphabet.
Thai language is easier to learn if one already knows a tonal language such as mandarin chinese.
☝️😇 I love this.
Big thank you for showing and sharing. Big thank you for teaching.

Yeah I agree. There no present past tense. All verbs applicable to all types of timeline. As for pronouns, male or female just the same. Pronunciation is very easily. Whatever is written, sound the same.
In Malay language, tenses are replaced with "telah," "sedang" and "akan."
What did you study to learn Malay? I am also going there in only about 1 month. So, I am in a similar situation as you were. Please help with what you used to learn the language.
Thank you
Hello Rick, I know Indonesian before so it was very easy to pick up Malay.
But you can try to use some materials that I used. A RUclips channel that I really like is ruclips.net/video/NGHB6mOyDh0/видео.html&ab_channel=IWannaLearnMalay
Try studying from the first lesson.
I also picked up some books from a book store in Malaysia. You can also use italki to find some Malay teacher. I didnt use italki for learning Malay but I saw a lot of teachers avaliable.

No, I don't think so. Just the standard Malay
You're amazing. You learn Malay language only two days but you can speak alot.I work in Malay for one year and 5months but I can speak a little bit.So, how do you learn Malay?
I knew Indonesian already so that helped so much.
Salamat po 👍 In addition to Indonesian 🇮🇩, you know Portuguese 🇵🇹 and English 🇬🇧. You are ready for Tagalog 🇵🇭. Will you learn that language?
Hint about Tagalog: it has code switching. I recognized this as I spoke it in The Philippines 🇵🇭 last year.
I don't have plans to learn Tagalog but maybe if I visit the Philippines, I'll change my mind :)
Ok 👌
Note 📝 The Philippines 🇵🇭 is known for great singers 👩🎤👨🎤. That is one key 🔑 to learning
Tagalog. David Foster, the famous host for Asia's Got Talent, was in Manila in March 2023 with Morissette Amon. She is the most popular singer there. Enrique Iglesias, Kirk Hammett of Metallica, Bruno Mars, Olivia Rodrigo, Marlissa Punzalan, winner of Australian Idol and Her are some Filipino musicians.

To be honest, as Malaysian, it's easier to learn fluent Indonesian than fluent Malay, bcs Malay have a bit slang and modern pronunciation. The reason I say this bcs if you try to speak malay without our slang, it's always sound Indonesian but using malay grammar 😅
I'm from india state from Meghalaya
Malay is arguably the easiest language to learn because:
1. Roman alphabets
2. Always follow the sound of the letters
3. Malaysians are adept at "rojak" language and will accommodate your lack of proficiency
Bezanya bahasa Malaysia dan Indonesia seperti US dan UK. Haha
Tahu bahasa melayu boleh bercakap dgn 300 juta orang
Standard Malay has some different vocabularies than Bahasa Indonesia bcoz both Malaysia and Indonesia prefer to diverge and develop their official languages differently many decades ago. We haven't even touch on state, regional or provincial dialects 😂
Agree, but changes happen naturally, not because these countries "prefer to diverge and develop."
Because Bahasa Indonesia is influenced by Dutch

Off course, Bahasa Indonesia originated from Bahasa Melayu
So saying can get you in trouble. I understand you're saying Bahasa Melayu as the 'original' Malay Language but some may get miffed understanding it as the modern Malay Language of Malaysia.😊
