Today I share the pronunciation of some common interrogative words and how to use them in Malay.
Below are all the Malay words I used in this video if you want to double check the meaning.
1. What - Apa
2. Why - Kenapa (Informal) and Mengapa (Formal)
3. Where - Mana
4. When - Bila
5. How - Macam mana (informal) and Bagaimana (informal)
6. Who - Siapa
7. How much - Berapa
8. What time - Pukul berapa
9. He/She - Dia (Dia is completely gender neutral, so it's very normal to have to stop the conversation at some point to ask if a person is talking about a male or a female).
10. Go - Pergi (the pronunciation is to pretend the 'R' is not there, so it sounds like PE-GI. The 'E' in 'PE' is like the 'E' in the word 'Err'. The 'G' in 'GI' is like the 'G' in the word 'Go'. The 'I' in 'GI' in like the 'I' in 'Tick'.
11. You - Awak. There are many other variations of you in Malay like Kamu, Engkau, Kau. I will cover the differences in another video.
12. Want - Nak (which is the informal, short form of 'Hendak')
13. That - Tu (which is the informal, short form of 'Itu')
14. This - Ni (which is the informal, short form of 'Ini')
15. Do - Buat
16. Five - Lima (My next video will be about numbers)
Some credentials, I am Malay and I was born, raised and still live in Malaysia.

Terima kasih kerana berusaha untuk menambahkan lagi bilangan penutur bahasa kebangsaan kita 😊🇲🇾🇲🇾
Pake bahasa indo aja kak
Even now , your easy style of learning in small bites has helped me immensely. My Malaysian wife speaks Malay , Chinese and English as many here do. I know that making a quality teaching video takes a level of commitment. Thank you for sharing your teaching gift . You are greatly appreciated
OH MY GOD THANK YOU! As an ethnic chinese malaysian who went to Chinese school, I am ashamed to say my BM is VERY bad. I really, really want to learn BM like a local so I can talk very "fasih" with everyone else next time!!!! Hidup Malaysia!!!
Kiddai oh goodness, what a lovely comment! I'm so happy you find this helpful. Thank you so much for leaving this comment :D It makes me very happy!
I'm glad!!! ^___^ Please make more of these videos lah, especially "how to talk like a local" ones :P Because my BM is "textbook BM" and it's sooo horrible! I can't wait to talk to all the uncle aunty and malay friends in a more sembang way hahaha
Kiddai Hehe sure sure. I have almost 50 lessons so far, please feel free to watch and share :D
Bes la gitu ^_^ Keep up the awesome work!!! You've earned a fan!
@@TheKubbas Jomla belajar..Nak saya ajar?Takpe, saya Takde niat utk buat yang buruk eh
look, im malay as well but its hard for me to explain/teach my foreign friends cus malay is super easy but watching your video could help & it sounds so much easier, thanks!
Glad you think I helped :D To be honest, once I started moving past the basics (Apa khabar, selamat pagi, makan etc), things got a lot harder. I'm really just making things up as I go along. Don't really know how to teach better other than providing pronunciations and literal translations.
ur good enough tho. ur making its easy to be understood. frankly, i dont even think about 'mana' and those questions can put before and after the sentences doh. really its just very helpful since im in the uk ill just show this video to my friends.lel. *like im a proud malay now :)
Haha tell me about it. My patriotism increased significantly when I went to the UK. Strange how things work.
@@sierralisse8897 sama..Mcm bila saya belajar bahasa lain kan mcm korea dan Jepun..Tiba-tiba rasa unik dan Kita nak bahasa kita pun digunakan seperti itu walaupun org jrg gunakan mcm Apa khabar,Selamat tinggal,Selamat Pagi..Tapi takpe, kita biasakan..Betul Tak?
Saya Sayang Malaysia🇲🇾❤️
that's why, it's not easy to be a teacher, u know the language, doesn't mean u can teach the language.
Just want to tell you your lessons are really good and I really appreciate it. I tried learning from websites and apps but they do not provide the pronunciation that is actually used in the real local conversations and as a result people needed me to repeat so they can guess what I said. Ever since I practiced to pronounce exactly like you shown then people can understand me right away, it is so awesome! You videos are really a treasure trove and a unique learning resource for people trying to learn Malay. Keep it up and thanks for putting the effort into making these videos!

You're welcome :D Hope it's going well!
great presentation, good information especially about formal/informal ways to say words. Thanks Lisse
You're very welcome :D Happy my lessons are helping.
Salut from Morocco, nak tanya about prefix and suffix, so confusing for me. tolong, explain more about that. tq. appreciate ur effort. thank u again. kasih..
Hello! Yes I understand they are very confusing. Unfortunately, since I am not a proper Malay teacher (I don't have the proper qualifications and training), I cannot really help in that respect. But as far as conversational, informal Malay go, the use of prefixes and suffixes are minimal. The best I can do in the future is to make a video lightly covering the subject so people can understand how it transforms the meaning.
Thank you so much for your teaching. All are so useful 😊
Great, good to know you find them helpful :D
Thanks Lisse. Your video is very useful for beginners!
Thank you Hao Chen! And thanks for subscribing :D Good to know there are people out there interested in learning Malay.
Thank you for the lessons. Planning on a move to KL in a few years and this will really help.
Hi lisa mam, love from Bangladesh ❤️ so easily u teach mam... I have done download your all Videos... Thank u so much
thank you for explaining such a easy way...
Your lessons are very useful and bite size of good for learning. And you are cute.
Oh, so lovely language.
If you come to the northern region of Malaysia such as Kedah, penang or perlis, u can use the formal pronounciation, because our dialect did not change the last letter from 'aah' to 'uuh'.
I think this is better than in the classroom hahah (Just in my opinion)
Yea

I just started watching ur videos, and I'm loving it!!
I just wanted u to knw!
Thanks laa
You are so nice I am understand you because your teaching style very nice
Thanks Sierra. I love your lesson. ❤❤
I love your teaching way, your character and I love you as well😁
Love your explanations
Nice video. Your expression is beautiful. Please make more video about different different topic to cover daily live. Thank you so much.
Thanks for sharing. If I am not wrong, putting the question (e.g. apa) behind the sentence is the original or formal malay language structure. Whereas, putting it in front is influences by English grammar. Correct me, if I am wrong.
I also heard that 'why' can be said as 'kenapa'
Its same meaning mengapa and kenapa, but people always use kenapa
Your English is equally good
Wow in this way I will be can able to talk soon
Thanks it was informative.
Saya suka will definitely practice it.

Aku Malaysian cina harap boleh cakap malayu fasih macam native
Thank you madam
Who - Siapa
What - Apa
Where - Mana
When - Bila
Why - Mengapa
How - Bagaimana
Hi Lisa its very useful
1:06, Frankly, I do not think AP-A and AP-E have anything to do with sounding formal (A-PA) or informal (A-PE).
The E sound is just a Johor-Melaka-KL-Selangor accent spoken only in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Melaka, Johor, Singapore, southern Pahang & southern Perak (southern part of Malaysian Peninsula). These areas probably account for only 30% of Malaysia, but 70% of Malaysia says the word as it it is spelt except may be in Kelantan, certain parts of Terengganu and Negeri Sembilan where A-PA actually becomes A-PO.
I am from Kedah living in KL, I rarely use A-PE, I stick with my Kedah accent and say A-PA, nothing at all to do with being formal or informal.
But I guess since the Johor-Melaka-KL-Selangor accent (the E accent) is the glamor accent, everybody apes it, sort of like Queen English is to English speakers
I like these video lessons. Lisse should however consider replacing "I taught you" with "we discussed". "I taught" or "teach" conveys a talk down tone, which may not be ideal for your adult followers.
Try to make a video on gaming conversation in malay
Hi Lisa! Good job! Please keep it up!
Thanks 😊
Hey Sierra. Your videos are amazing and helpful, which I have been following. I will relocate to Malaysia in March next year for living and working. To further my study of Malay, I would kindly like to ask if you can recommend me some books teaching grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation of Malay. Your favor will be highly appreciated. Terima Kasih.
Hello, there's only one book I can recommend for now which is Colloquial Malay by Zaharah Othman and Sutanto Atmosumarto. It's written in English and has really practical content and even exercises for you to learn Malay. My only problem with it is the sentences can sometimes come across as overly formal. Sometimes they point out how to say something in an informal way, but not always. But still, it's a very good book and I personally use it myself in my lessons.
@@sierralisse8897 Thank you so much for your reply. I will buy one and use it combined with your videos. Terima kasih.
@@sierralisse8897 Hey Sierra, Can I ask you another question. Does Malay have rolling R. I am quite confused about it because sometimes I can hear it but sometimes not. Could you please kindly advise on it? Thanks
Hi, I'm not totally sure how rolling R is supposed to sound like. At first I assumed that a rolling R is something like how most Americans sound, but now I'm not so sure anymore when I see people using rolled R and trilling R interchangeably.
As for Malay rs, according to the book Malay for Everyone by Othman Sulaiman, r as the final letter in a penultimate syllable should be distinctly pronounced (like kertas, harta, derma). I tried a soft trilled r and it sounds about right. I think in something impactful like public speaking people might lean into it a bit more, but in vernacular Malay, it's fine if you don't trill it and just have a little indication of an r.
If the r is at the end of a word, it is hardly audible, like lapar, pasir and telur.
Hope that helps.
@@sierralisse8897 Hey Sierra. Clear and thorough explanation. Very helpful. Terima kasih.
Noice 😳 it's hard lesson but I'll learn with practice 🙂
Terima kasih awak :) saya ajar kawan2 international kat uia ni Bahasa melayu using your video ;-)
