  • In the first of our 2-Part conversation with Jon Tattersall, Jon and Markus go in-depth on one of our most recent findings.
One of the most unique data measurements provided by deWiz is the ability to track a player's hand speed at every point in the swing and in doing so, deWiz measures the point at which that player's Maximum Hand Speed occurs in relation to impact of the ball.
Despite seeming counterintuitive, what we have found - and confirm in our conversation with Jon - is that the best players produce MHS further away from impact than high handicap players!

John- you did an insightful series on Nicklaus and his swing width- pendulum motion and kitchen door opening and closing consistency with minimal rotation ( thru wrist actions) curious that the concepts is mostly discussed with chipping and control shots- how is the release initiated - sort of 8 or 9 o’clock and forearms active to and thru impact with ground force pushing up and around? My perception of what you are suggesting. Nicklaus was a tour player with almost long drive tendencies thru the bag?

“Push into the ground earlier in transition”- front or rear foot for right handed players? Many instructors suggest early move to left side, then push up-“that’s too late”- more push rear down first- part of keeping right arm structure ?

@@nickstarchuk Thanks for taking time to reply- John T has a video working with a player and talks about “out toss of club” at top and putting force into right foot first and left leg will take care of itself - “since player is athletic”. Also mention about justin Thomas making same out move and right foot push first which triggers forward motion. Guess one can fiddle with moves but feel is not always a good indicator of what to do.

If your hand speed is greatest at impact does that mean your flipping? I seem to be highest at impact with 0 to distance to impact. I am guessing that I am casting or flipping the driver.

So if you want to work on more distance, you should be working on longer distance to impact and faster takeaway with fast hand speed? Of course, these things are dependent upon smash factor as well.

A good summary! A longer backswing, a greater Max-Hand-Speed distance to impact and a quicker start-to-impact duration will yield more distance.
Or simply working on one or the other while maintaining will also yield distance. For example I have a fairly fast start to impact duration of 0.96 seconds but 140 cm Length of backswing. I managed to push my LoB to 150 while maintaining a 0.96 STI and I added distance from that.

Does which club you are using create a different max distance to impact? For example, would a driver produce e 50cm but a 6 iron produce only 30cm or do good players create a max distance of 50cm with all clubs?

Good question! We will find that the Distance to Impact measurement will get further from impact with a longer club. So the driver MHS DTI will be > 6 iron > 9 iron, etc.
