    My goodness sakes this song. They don’t make songs like this anymore they don’t sing songs like this anymore they don’t have beautiful violinists playing anymore. This song is absolutely gorgeous in this group in my opinion is the very best in the universe. How many bands can you name that have been together for 50 years and have written nearly 1000 songs?

    WORDS became Barry’s big spotlight solo for concerts, and I STARTED A JOKE was Robin’s. I think it’s fascinating to see these songs from decade to decade, and how they aged, styles changed, and the subtle changes that kept the song current. Please consider reacting the the 1979 and 1989 live performances. In the 1979 version of Words, there’s a cameo of Barry’s wife Linda holding their oldest child Steven. The 1989 version is my favorite, and shows Barry’s interaction with the audience. You won’t regret reacting. Robin’s performance of Joke in 1989 is noted for the minutes long standing ovation.

      I really agree with the observations and insights you’ve communicated about Barry and Robin and they are thought provoking for me. Thank you - I appreciate them. I admit I’m curious about your thoughts about Maurice. What do you think his signature or spotlight solo or songwriting achievement or concert performance would be? For some reason I just love the video of Railroad but it also seems like an outlier (he was out in the middle of nowhere singing by himself). He seemed very socially skilled and it seemed like he really connected with crowds and his brothers and the band. I love his voice and love many of the songs in which he sang lead but I don’t find myself humming them or them being brain worms. Maybe I’m unique in that way. I guess what I’m wondering is what do you (or anyone, actually) think he and/or Bee Gee fans/followers (for lack of better words) would consider as “his moment”/signature (or two or three). He’s an interesting man, as they all are/were. I’m loving all four brothers❤️❤️❤️❤️

    • @dp3396
      @dp3396 3 года назад

      Maurice usually solo’d one song per concert, but it was usually one from the most recent album, so not one in particular. What was consistent, and what fans that followed them around the world probably anticipated from Maurice, was his comedy routines during the medley. They changed management in Australia when Mo was about 15, and had pretty much unlimited use of the studio for the first time. Nat Kipner said they (especially Mo) quickly mastered all of the instruments, and Mo liked to write songs, but not so much the words. Their manager, Robert Stigwood, commented after signing them when Mo was only 17, that he could instantly arrange what Barry and Robin wrote.This allowed them to write and record in the studio, unlike most who don’t go into a costly studio session until they have fully written songs rehearsed and ready to record. Mo was more instrumentally gifted, and is usually credited with multiple instruments on their earliest studio albums, and Barry said he was an expert harmonist who always knew where to place that third part. If Maurice is singing lead on any of their songs, then he was usually the only writer and may do all instruments on the studio version. These are the songs I would suggest, if you want to better know Maurice and his contributions to the Bee Gees :
      BEE GEES 1960 (at ages 13 and 10, and about 1 1/2 years after they started working professionally), BLOWING IN THE WIND (that 3rd part harmony - he’s placing the high part), WINE AND WOMEN (Robin and Mo both have their first solo parts on this song), SPICKS AND SPECKS (piano), JIVE TALKIN (bass!!!), SEVEN SEAS SYMPHONY (composition and piano - completed in one take with a live symphony orchestra), LAY IT ON ME (studio or live), MAN IN THE MIDDLE at LIVE BY REQUEST (for a GREAT live performance of a personal autobiographical song from their last album before he passed with him playing the guitar John Lennon gave him for his 21st birthday), THIS IS WHERE I CAME IN - official video (autobiographical of their journey together and he shows off one of the magic tricks he was known to love to do, and his gorgeous smile), and my personal favorite of his - WALKING ON AIR - the studio version - also from their last album in 2001 - with Maurice alone credited with writing, producing, vocals, keyboards, guitars, and co-credited on Drum Programming). They, including younger brother Andy, are said to all have perfect pitch, allowing for natural harmony, playing any instrument by ear, song writing, and exceptional live performances. Their first manager commented that 12 year old Barry could write a song in 5 minutes, and their second manager commented on his ability to custom write for anyone, and in any genre, but Barry is said to prefer to write in a team, and Robin and Maurice were definitely his dream team. I find it fascinating that Robin was the opposite of his twin, and even though he could play instruments by ear, preferred writing the words, and his dominate instrument was his voice, while Maurice preferred writing music and playing instruments. The three of them together were an unstoppable force. If Maurice had lived, I believe MAN IN THE MIDDLE would have become his signature solo spotlight.

      Actually, the studio version of KAY IT ON ME would best showcase Maurice’s style, and I would recommend the 1989 MEDLEY to see a bit of comedy and also Maurice’s contribution to the harmonies, especially on Islands in the Stream.

He still has his beautiful voice along with Dollys.

    This was from their days as a 5 piece (until 1969). The Gibbs were born in the UK but migrated to AUS in 1958 where their career seriously started along with their 1st major recordings. They returned to the UK in 1967 where they were picked up by a major label and extended to 5 men with 2 AUS musicians (Vince Melouney - lead guitar & Colin Peterson - drums) who you see in this clip.

    Most of the recording was on 45s records. A, side and B, side with the main song for DJs played is the A side only. However, if enough request come in the B side can be played. "Words" is the B side and what also made the Bee Gees a household name. This is the beginning of the Bee Gees.

    Hey Miss “D”.Great to cop another fun and interesting reaction from ya mate. Love it. Yeah the Ed Sullivan Show WOW! They sure don’t make variety shows like no more. Remember the Ed Sullivan look-a-like dude, in the Tarantino flick, Pulp Fiction? He was actually pretty freakin good I thought. But this version of the Bee Gees early years, clearly shows a young, groovy and hip Barry Gibb, with no trademark beard. Cool. But his unique vocal style never changed. I agree with your points of difference between the two versions mate. Thanks for this. Stay safe mate.👍🇦🇺☮️😁🤪😄❤️

    Another nice version of “Words” is by the Irish boy group Boyzone with Ronan Keating on lead vocal. He had a few excellent covers that he recorded a number of covers a# a solo artist after leaving Boyzone. An diflferent type of treat is the live version of the song performed by Boyzone and The Bee Gees together.

    First to say, I'm a big Bee Gees fan. Really like Elvis, but his version of 'Words' doesn't match the meaning of that heartfelt song. To me, he somehow destroys it, pushing it thru' so fast. On their 'Spirits-Tour' in 1979, also to find on YT, you can see Barry, doin' a phantastic and stunning performance of 'Words'. BTW, in the sixties, they had bigger hits than 'Words' or 'To Love Somebody', but this couple of songs are the most covered ones, out of that timeline. Not strange to me, so it's clear to recognize why. These are monster-songs, makin' other great songwriters green with envy, like Bono or even Stephen Stills said.

    Thanks, Dani - this is beautiful - but I also love Robin - and he is a great contributor to this song - here is a live solo of his -- ruclips.net/video/m14NP4jvibg/видео.html

      This was lovely! Thank you for sharing this link; I had never seen it. Robin was born to sing, right? It seems he could not have been given a better name. What a gift - great songs and singers have the power to give us such wonderful shared and yet simultaneously unique/novel listening experiences!

    Also Words is a very difficult song to get your head around and contradictory. Words without action is meaningless. Any one can talk a good game but without any real conviction and action it’s pointless. Also no one mentions the line about you don’t believe a single word I say. That illustrates trust issues. So to me at first glance yes it’s a beautiful love song but if you dig deep it’s not really what you think it is. It’s a bit of a mystery/illusion that leaves you with more questions than answers.
