Not all head can carry 400 locs! My 8 yo daughter has 367 locs and I watched her consultant tying herself in knots trying to squeeze 400 locs on her head! Isn't it funny? No matter the group...some people will always seek to make themselves "elite". I cannot figure it out. Yet historically we have perpetuated this trend. Culturally...socially...
    racially....economically....color wise..
familial legacy. Perhaps it's human nature to want to "one up" each other. Regarding the "sisterlocks sisterhood" it is especially sad and unseemly. This hair journey has been a collective long arduous trek. Just as we finally embrace our own innate beauty almost immediately we "muddy" it with negative elitism. To he honest with you. I love it when small, micro locs are not the same size. When there's variation in loc size, it looks like there's more texture and frankly, it looks more natural. I also don't care for the grid. Your locs are very tiny. Can you imagine having 100 more of them? Every head is different. No matter where you go, there's always a group of people with low self esteem who try to bring others down to where they themselves are. I'm so glad that you recognized that and got out. African Americans, especially, know what it feels like to be put down or considered to be "not as good as" someone else because of skin color, body shape/size, lip size, etc. So now that we're trying to move on from that here we go again with loc number and size. During my research, I chose sisterlocks because I want to the versatility, I did not choose it to become part of any”fraternity or Sorority.”
I love locks of all shapes, sizes and length especially coming from the Caribbean what you see so much diversity in locks. At the end of the day the common denominator is that mostly women and men of colour get our hair done like this, it becomes an extension of who we are and to put down another woman or man because you’re not satisfied with the number of locks and I hair it’s self deprecating.

My sisterlocks look much bigger than yours but I probably have a larger number of them. I used to feel really insecure about the size of my locs because of the way people act like all sisterlocks should be insanely tiny. It's really messed up that seemingly regardless of the number, there's this pressure to meet some imaginary standard of what sisterlocks look like. All of ours are beautiful and unique.

You'll never see proper representation on youtube for anything higher than 3c, even though the majority of black people have 4b and 4c hair. Guuurrrrrllll.... Prior to self installing my miniature locs... I did research on Sisterlocks. I watched Sisterlocks videos, and I specifically watched the videos of women in the Sisterlocks community and their attitudes towards other forms of small locs ( which has frequently been called step-Sisterlocks ). Because of the elitist mentality and separatist attitude, I decided against Sisterlocks altogether. Instead, I installed my own locs. And the most hilarious thing about it is... women that I see in person that have Sisterlocks... Do. Not. Know. The. Difference!!! I have been loc’d for 3.5 years now, and I absolutely love being in complete control of my re-tightening schedule and not having to deal with the mental drain of socializing with people who look down on other loc’d sisters because they don’t have a Sisterlocks certificate.

I’m sorry you experienced that, I’m glad you did what was best for yourself and left. When I had my beautiful sister locs I was in a toxic relationship and it caused my hair to fall out, so my consultant had to cut the rest off . Negativity eats away at you and starts to effect your health over time. I’ve noticed the nastiness that goes on as well and it’s all the way across the board from skin color to hair choices. The saddest thing to me is to see a beautiful sister with natural hair whether it be locs or lose .... make fun of a sister with a wig or weave. I literally see grown women acting like children with the swinging of their hair and scratching of the scalp excessively as if they have lice, just to prove the point that their hair is real and other races do this too, I’ve noticed it more and more! My hair is natural lose I’m going to get sister locs again hopefully this year because I miss having them. Your beautiful and so is your hair. God made us all in his likeness and as a bonus he gives us free will ... the power to choose whatever we want!!! Thank you for sharing and having the courage to speak on it!! God Bless You! 🥰

There are those that get so messed up when someone tells them that the hundreds of Locs that were installed by someone else isn’t Sisterlocks that they get them cutoff and reestablished. They are so devastated, which is just nuts!! If they look good, who cares. I really wish you had put this video on those SL pages (as a drop the mic move). I am very turned off immediately at the country club mentality and feeling like I would be joining the mean girls table in the high school lunchroom. We are such a beautiful array of women. I do not want to become part of any community that promotes division. While I appreciate entrepreneurial spirit and pride in craft, it should not be used as a hierarchy to down trot outliers. Imitation is truly the greatest compliment. This journey should be one of freedom and acceptance of ones self and others.

Honey I’m subscribing to you and I thank you. I agree with you 100%. I don’t have sisterlocs but I did install microtwists and I have 477. I was on social media in sisterloc and microlocs groups and I witnessed the same thing. No I didn’t address my irritation in the group because to be honest, I could care less what others think or how others feel. I was there for encouragement and when I noticed the rudeness and subtle shade I no longer felt encouraged. I also felt no need to discuss my feelings or to try to point out the wrong. There have been many people in these groups who have said something similar to what you said here. It really doesn’t change the mindset of the masses. I just decided, like you, to seek positivity and I dropped them all. Now, I subscribe only to those that I feel have the communities best interest at heart.

They are still SL Because of the Grid, that's what make them SL' the grid the number is what they are told to put in each clients head. Your SL are very beautiful. 4:50 Tell me about it. I did DIY microlocks and I am LOVING them but I've been looking for someone to do reties. I called ONE SL consultant so far and she was SO rude. She kept laughing when I told her I did them myself and used a 4 point rotation (she acted as if a 4 point rotation was somehow wrong and unheard of even though interlockers have been using it for years), she referred to my hair as "... whatever you have on your head", and repeatedly told me I didn't have sisterlocks even though I knew that already- to the point that I had to say "I dont CARE if they are sisterlocks or not". After seeing my hair in pictures, she begrudgingly said I did alright and said she'd schedule with me, but I feel like I'd just be laughed at continuously if went to her. I want to go to someone who is knowledgeable about sisterlocks AND microlocks. I feel like she just wanted sisterlocks to be the ONLY way someone can have nice, smaller locs.

The things that you mentioned are the reason that I did not get "Sisterlocks." Although my loctitian is a certified Sisterlocks consultant, I have micro locks installed. My grid is a a little different that the straight sisterlocks grid and I LOVE IT!
My consultant is leaving the community as well.
Her given reasons are that many consultants are not cosmetologists and are not trained to take care of the scalp and other hair issues that are not addressed in any Sisterlocks class. She also doesn't like the sisterlocks tool.
At any rate, She installs the number of locs that are appropriate for your hair texture, health, and density, and although I counted my locs, not once has she ever.
I am 5 months loc'ed and when people approach me or comment about my Sisterlock I am happy to inform them that I have microlocs.

it's always sad when something that's supposedly freeing turns out to be what people ran away from. people run from concepts of beauty and standard, and then another standard and in-out group is created. the natural hair community is no different. but it's a good thing to note when something is silly, and not fall prey to it. if you like what you have, that's great. if someone else thinks you should have something different, then that person's opinion doesn't matter. the people who are supportive, and first and foremost yourself, are all that matters for what you do with your hair journey. thanks for talking about this :)

I like the suggestion of starting your own SL group and keeping it positive. I would join your group in a heartbeat! I was researching thin sisterlocks and stumbled onto your channel. I am a part of the Sisterlock community and often ask people how many locks they have, but only to try and determine how full my own hair should be. I was told that I have 420 locks and I’m now 14 months in, but my hair is very thin and isn’t as full as most people who have been locked my length of time and some who have been locked a shorter period of time. I try not to get discouraged as I really love my hair and have a lot of hair crushes out there. Your hair is beautiful and doesn’t look thin. It’s actually fuller than mine. I think my age might be playing a part in it being so thin too. Anyway, I’m sorry you have had negative experiences with the Sisterlock community. Wishing you the best in your journey.

    • @ambyressence

Plumer CRS I definitely know the feeling of loving your hair but struggling with the fact that it’s not what you expected. ☹️ If you’re 14 months in and still not 100% happy with your locs, it may be worth doing something about it. I would start with counting your locs to make sure you actually have as many as you were told. Then maybe talk to your loctician to see if there’s anything that can be done to give your hair the fuller look you’re after (perhaps combining).
Ultimately, your invested a lot of money in your hair and deserve to be 100% happy with it, even if that means making changes or investing a little more.
Im sure your locs are beautiful though! And don’t forget that while you’re crushing on other people’s locs, there’s a good chance that someone out there is crushing on yours. ❤️ thank you for watching and best of luck with your journey!

I am going to be honest. I had a full head of sister locs and never counted and when someone asked me how many do you have, I said I didn’t know and don’t care as long as my hair was healthy and now I transitioned my sister locks to traditional locs, my hair is still healthy and I still kept my length. I have always embraced my hair and didn’t care about numbers because that is all this world cares about in general are numbers.
