    This song chokes me up every time I hear it. John was a deep thinker & wasn't afraid of singing & saying what he felt. He hated the Vietnam War but he loved the soldiers. He hated the effects of drugs but he also hated the ridiculous drug laws. He was a Christian but didn't condemn those who didn't believe as he did. What a remarkable man he was!

      @chrismatthew8929 so did every singer, so they could keep doing shows every night, so they could keep driving on the road and practicing every night. He got addicted like many others and that caused many to destroy their lives, their marriages and relationships. Cash survived though, and remarried to June Carter. It's his experience that leads to his vision on drugs

    I just watched “Tricky Dick and The Man In Black” on Netflix tonight. I highly recommend it. I was a Johnny Cash fan before but have come away with so much more respect for him after watching this documentary. I’d never heard this song before tonight and I got chills listening to it. The words of this song have never been truer than they are now. Johnny Cash has so much integrity as an artist and as a human being. He always told the truth no matter what the cost. He stood up for the poor and the suffering and the voiceless. We need that voice now. We must keep up our quest for the truth. Thank you Johnny Cash for your brilliance ❤️

    This song even all these years later describes today's society perfectly, we have a youth being neglected and left behind, they are the true victims of the worlds economic crisis. We have youth unemployment at disturbingly high levels world wide while those at the top protect their wealth. I only hope the truth leads to some changes the world needs. I'm sure Johnny would have said so if he was still here.

    This song moves me, and I had no idea he made such an amazing speech before he sang it! Honestly, this is a song every adult should understand if society ever hopes to evolve into something worth being a part of. Really, if you look at what we are putting up with compared to the way things ought to be, we are putting up with far too much from the established world that is. Tradition does not equal wisdom, nor make you right. We must find a good path.
    I hope you are all well,

      Actually this isn't the song inspired by Ali poem. Cash recorded the poem as a gospel song called Truth but never released it and kept poem locked in a vault. The adult speaker at my high school graduation quoted this song. I hardly knew it was a line from the New Testament, a question Ponitus Pilate asked Jesus. I even liked Johnny Cash. I did not like the speaker though. Johnny, I know was almost destroyed by drugs he was taking in the 50's and early 60's. Owed a lot to Bob Dylan for his resurrection. He survived the 60's better than Elvis as it turned out, though they were both of the same backgrounds.

    Johnny Cash was a great liberal!

    • @Allagi22
      @Allagi22 8 лет назад +30

      Cash was a seeker of the truth. I think he would tell you that himself. Life isn't conservative and liberal divided down the line. It's actually real life. It's important to think your own mind and stand up for what you believe to be right, not what someone told you was right. Question your world, and think for yourself. Cash was a Christian his whole life, but would tell you himself he was a hell raiser who was a drug addict. He was a huge fan of guns but strongly opposed the Vietnam war (not to mention he was a veteran of the air force). He wanted to be a Gospel singer his whole life, sang many great spiritual songs but also was a rock and roll fan, hung out with Elvis, and Bob Dylan. Kris Kristofferson called him a walking contradiction. That's a good handle, truth is Cash thought for himself. It's ok to be a Veteran and play songs for prisoners. It's ok to be Christian and admit your battles with drugs and alcohol. It's ok to be a human being. We weren't born Conservative and Liberal it's only the fucking news that divides us into two camps. It isn't us and them it's just we. There is one nation. More than that one world. Either we work together, or we all work our hardest in our stupid divided groups destroying each other. Cash saw the bigger picture. I hope you do too. Treat your enemies with kindness, nothing will confuse them more. Either we all work together, or we all fail alone.
