A few days before my grandma died, she explained the meaning of this song while it was playing. She was a huge Johnny Cash fan. I was touched by the meaning, especially when she was just diagnosed with cancer and in hospice. She wasn’t one to be sentimental either. The next morning she had a horrible stroke that made her unable to communicate and she rapidly declined from there. When she was getting close to passing, but not able to let go, I kept humming this song to her. I didn’t know the melody 100% but I improvised. It was the meaning and intent that mattered. My aunt got into too if I remember right. This was a pivotal moment when we expressed acceptance of her passing and that we’ll be okay. She finally died about an hour later. We were relieved for her, and celebrated by playing her absolute favorite songs One Bourbon One Scotch and Bad to the Bone by George Thorogood. Yesterday, 5/2/19, was 7 years since her passing 🌤💐 HEY Oddone! Stop looking at me! You looked at me first!! 😜 You know I *might* actually miss you if you weren’t intruding in my dreams so much! Really didn't like country until I discovered Johnny. I knew his Ring of Fire song , but I couldn't name another song he did. This last year, I turned 50 and decided to watch Little House of Prairie. Johnny and his wife were guest stars on season 3 episode 1. I was blown away with Johnny's acting performance, so I dug deeper into his music. For the first time in 50 years I can say that I am now interested in country music and it all started with Johnny Cash. What an awesome talent he was.
Johnny and June are now in that glorious circle. I can't wait to sing with them in Heaven. Yes, I believe in Jesus and the fact that there is a reward after this.

Basically Johnny had problems with his parents, and when he was a child his brother died in an accident, which his parents blamed him for. He always listened to the radio with his brother, who wanted to be a country singer, and they enjoyed listening to young June Carter on the grand ol opry. Johnny became a country singer instead of his brother, and met and fell in love with (or was already in love with ) June Carter. They had a rocky start and divorces from other marriages before eventually marrying each other. Johnny kicked drugs with the help of June and her mother Maybelle, one of the original members of the Carter family, essentially Country music's most famous early recording act. June's mother Maybelle is standing right next to her on stage. Her two sisters are standing next to her. The Statler brothers are the backup singers. Carl Perkins was a long time family friend of both June, and Johnny. They had all been on tour as friends as far back as the 50's, and in 1965 Carl started touring with them, featured as a singer and performer but also playing with the band at times (Carl was a fantastic guitarist). Newly Sober Johnny helped Carl quit drinking. In 1967 while on tour, Carl Perkins wrote this song about the family atmosphere of the tour, and essentially making Johnny part of MAYBELLE's family, instead of his own. So Johnny's singing in the song, with his mother and father (Maybelle and her husband), with his older brother. "Little Brother has done gone on, but I'll rejoin him in a song, we'll be together again up yonder in a little while" touches on his brother's death as a child, now perpetually his little brother instead of his older brother. This was Carl's way of thanking the legendary Carter family for helping save his friend John's life, as well as his own, and essentially acknowledging that John was now part of the Carter family. Johnny explained this in his autobiography, it has nothing to do with Carl, he wrote it specifically for Johnny. The end with "Will the Circle be Unbroken" is lifted from the Carter Family's most famous song, a gospel song they added lyrics to in the 1930's I believe. So Maybelle Carter, who played the guitar on the original record, is standing on stage with her family all around her as Johnny basically dreams he was her son.... This is more than anything, a wonderful sign of respect he's showing his mother in law. Written by the great Carl Perkins, and that's the gist of what he was getting at.

The original was written by the Carter Family (Maybelle in the back left beside June and her sister, and brother in law) in the 1930's, it's considered one of the earliest country songs, and of course a gospel song. So churches have sang that song well before the johnny Cash version, he's singing a gospel song inside this song. Peace out!

All of Johnny songs will forever be classics my cousin Johnny did family proud. Miss him highly much and can't believe he is gone but all of our Rivers family is just about all gone. Only three main family members left when they gone I will be so lost am so hoping to one day be reunited with them in all in the sky when it's my time to go

I grew up in the 60's. The first album I ever heard was Johnny Cash. Love seeing those young Statler Brothers. Miss Harold Reid, Johnny and June immensely.
My daddy Passed away last year. July 1st 2023. I cry almost every week. I look at strangers and think to myself would it be wrong of me to ask that dad over there for a hug? Would it be wrong of me to sit at the park and just cry? I miss him more than anything. I just wish someone would see how much im hurting. I needed him and now hes gone...
I hope you've found peace since then. I'm sure your daddy wouldn't want you to suffer.

This song always makes me think of my dad. When I was a kid we'd go on drives and listen to Johnny cash and sing along. This will always be one of my favorite songs.

If you love this song, and don't know the meaning of it, you may enjoy hearing it. Basically Johnny had problems with his parents, and when he was a child his brother died in an accident, which his parents blamed him for. He always listened to the radio with his brother, who wanted to be a country singer, and they enjoyed listening to young June Carter on the grand ol opry. Johnny became a country singer instead of his brother, and met and fell in love with (or was already in love with ) June Carter. They had a rocky start and divorces from other marriages before eventually marrying each other. Johnny kicked drugs with the help of June and her mother Maybelle, one of the original members of the Carter family, essentially Country music's most famous early recording act.
June's mother Maybelle is standing right next to her on stage. Her two sisters are standing next to her. The Statler brothers are the backup singers.
Carl Perkins was a long time family friend of both June, and Johnny. They had all been on tour as friends as far back as the 50's, and in 1965 Carl started touring with them, featured as a singer and performer but also playing with the band at times (Carl was a fantastic guitarist). Newly Sober Johnny helped Carl quit drinking. In 1967 while on tour, Carl Perkins wrote this song about the family atmosphere of the tour, and essentially making Johnny part of MAYBELLE's family, instead of his own. So Johnny's singing in the song, with his mother and father (Maybelle and her husband), with his older brother. "Little Brother has done gone on, but I'll rejoin him in a song, we'll be together again up yonder in a little while" touches on his brother's death as a child, now perpetually his little brother instead of his older brother. This was Carl's way of thanking the legendary Carter family for helping save his friend John's life, as well as his own, and essentially acknowledging that John was now part of the Carter family. Johnny explained this in his autobiography, it has nothing to do with Carl, he wrote it specifically for Johnny.
The end with "Will the Circle be Unbroken" is lifted from the Carter Family's most famous song, a gospel song they added lyrics to in the 1930's I believe. So Maybelle Carter, who played the guitar on the original record, is standing on stage with her family all around her as Johnny basically dreams he was her son.... This is more than anything, a wonderful sign of respect he's showing his mother in law.

We used to sing this in church all the time when people were getting prayed for. Pentecostal. Seriously had no idea it was a johnny cash song at the time!
The original was written by the Carter Family (Maybelle in the back left beside June and her sister, and brother in law) in the 1930's, it's considered one of the earliest country songs, and of course a gospel song. So churches have sang that song well before the johnny Cash version, he's singing a gospel song inside this song. Peace out!
