This is classic Cash. In this video, JC is playing a Fender Palomino. The guitar I owned before a burglary took it and four other instruments. Although it's been well over 20 years, I still miss the Fender.
I remember Johnny telling me about that. He said there was this kid who wore a dog suit and peed all over his gladiolas. I think he said you were dressed like a Dalmatian, or maybe it was a cocker spaniel. I forget that part...
So many years after performance still fantastic music and entertainer and LEGEND. Johnny cash is somone everybody can drink a beer with and always feel welcomed and respected fore who you are. You dont feel to nervous to be with him. You know 100% he will respect all people fore who they are. A beatiful man 👍🎅🌞
wow..Marshall Grant the bassist went on to be the Statlers manager. Great history lesson I'm getting here. I know some of these people. Marshall passed a couple of years ago. : (
Marshall Grant managed the Statlers from 1980 till 2002 when the Statlers retired. So this is in 1967. Nobody thought of his Future Job here. Just mentioning. CD
@@corneliadenninger5395 I worked with him once a year in a theatre that I work in. sometimes twice a year for the entire time he was their manager. He was a pretty fun to work with also. Great sense of humor.
Legenda country! Úžasný, krásne zafarbený hlas. Zážitok počúvať tohto speváka. Dar od pána Boha. Ďakujem Johnny Cash, že si kedysi žil ale tvoje piesne sú nesmrteľné a tie stále žijú. Poklona!
Very nice video! Great to see them all in color. It's impressive how much Luther kept the band together; the difference when he joined in for Ring of Fire around 4:32 is tremendous.
A great time for music. Great sounds and everyone took time to look well. For today, they would say it looks more like Dean Martin than country, but that's what is so cool about it
MADMAN read the original post before shouting that he's lying, he's not. Luther Perkins, the original guitarist of Johnny Cash's band The Tennesse Two died in hospital after a house-fire in 1968. Johnny Cash however, died in 2003.
I saw him in concert with my dad in kalamazoo when I was 6,I am pretty sure the statlers were with him at that concert too.I remember it pretty good cause I had a sore throat and my dad gave me a halls and I ralphed. lol .
I recognize that Johnny is unquestionably the star of this video (and rightly so), but I love the harmonies that the Statler added to Johnny's songs. They were at least as good as Elvis's (and Ricky's) Jordanaires. And let's not forget the beautiful singing of the Carter family. Was it Anita with the fantastic soprano voice?

for the most part, the bass singer of the statler brothers (Hardold reid) was the most energetic, but when he sang he had a straight face, but the second they stopped signing he lit up like a kid. He, and his brother (Don Reid, the lead singer of the group) were really the leaders.
The lead singer of the Statler Brothers was actually Don Reid (the one who made a sign with hes hand) but at that part actually it was everyone's part to be in the same time
Of the eight on the stage, as of 9/30/17 four have passed away, Johnny, Marshall Grant, Luther Perkins and Lew Dewitt of the Statler Bros. Oh yes, Roy Drusky the MC has passed away too.
D.B. Cross u forgot the carters. The only living people until this day per September 2018 present at this video is WS Holland (the drummer), Harold and Don Reid, and Phil Balsley (statler brothers). Please correct me if im wrong
When you're a lead guitarist, you TRY to make your own mark, your own style to influence those who will come behind you. Fe have ever done that like Luther Perkins. Jimmy Page. George Harrison and of course Jimi Hendricks did the same thing. Just a few, mind you.
It wasn't that he was lost, he was doing his signature shuffle style. He just mutted the strings and strummed. It gave a snare drum sound. He still even done this when W.S was playing drums
I love Johnny Cash and his music. But let's be honest. He sings "I Walk the Line," a song about being faithful to his wife. By the end of that year, he would be divorced from his wife because he was fooling around with June.
Luther Perkins fans: Why would Luther be placing a capo on his guitar at the end of the video 5:23? I've never known of him doing this. My initial thought was Orange Blossom Special may have been next. Johnny's harmonicas played in C, but Luther's guitar was tuned up one half step, so there was no convenient way for Luther to play in C, at least not according to his usual methods (Bob Wootton had a method of playing out of B using the B7 chord). He would sometimes switch to Lew DeWitt's white hollowbody guitar that was in standard tuning for just this song, as he did during the 1968 Folsom Prison concert. I've also seen a photo of Luther using this Esquire with one of his Jaguars on a stand or propped against an amp beside him; perhaps this was for the same reason (the Jaguar was in standard tuning for Orange Blossom Special). Maybe sometimes he just used a capo when it wasn't convenient or possible to have a second guitar nearby, like this TV appearance. Luther may have had limited musical knowledge, but he was a very practical thinker. Any other thoughts?
I never saw this broadcast, but its possible the next song was in a higher key then what luther had already been tuned up to, I just dont know what that song would be
Luther Perkins deserves so much more credit than he has gotten
LUTHER was called home way too soon
Cigarette. Fell asleep. Fire. Dead. 1968. Terrible.
