Mad Men - The Infamous AMC Previews

  • Back when Mad Men aired on TV, creator Matthew Weiner was required by the AMC promo department to add previews at the end of every episode. Famously hating giving out any kind of spoilers, Weiner put restrictions on what those previews were allowed to show. The result were confusing, disorienting non-sequitur previews that barely gave the audience anything to work with. Here are the ones I managed to find, mostly from season 5&6, and a couple from season 7a.

Series boss Matthew Weiner, who may well be TV’s strictest spoiler-phobe, knows he’s lucky that the comically stingy weekly teasers haven’t led to a full-scale fan revolt but have instead become one of the show’s quirky trademarks. “I have tied their hands,” he tells Vulture, referring to the network’s promo department, “and I’m amazed at what they do with the restrictions I have given them. Over the years, it’s evolved into this semaphore of storytelling.” Not surprisingly, Weiner says that if he had his way, there would be no peeks at all. “We pay so much money for that music at the end of the show that I don’t really understand why we even have a promo for next week,” he says. “I don’t want to reveal anything!” So what are his instructions to the promo department, exactly? Call it attrition warfare. “First it was like, ‘Please don’t mention anything beyond the first twenty minutes of the show, please don’t spoil this story, please don’t spoil that story.’” he recalls. “Then there was the idea of, ‘Can you at least do what they used to on The Sopranos promos, which is to make it look like it’s some other kind of story?’ That required a ridiculous amount of effort and wasn’t always possible, even in The Sopranos promos. Eventually, they sort of evolved into this kind of non sequitur thing.” They now have it down to a science, although Weiner says he will still step in to, for example, nix any footage of Betty so her appearance is kept a surprise. “It’s really a tall order, which is, ‘Can you promote next week’s show? You cannot tell any story and you cannot show most of the interesting shots.’ I’m so glad people are enjoying it because when people are making fun of the show, it’s just as much fun to me as when they’re telling me they love it.”

    Brilliant strategy.
Tell the viewer nothing. In fact, make the viewer actively confused. And hope they tune in.

These are somehow less vague and confusing than the episode “summaries” that were given. “Don has a problem. Pete helps a client. Roger entertains an idea."

Someone in 2013: "No way, Harry Crane has to double-check next episode! I can't wait til next week when I'll find out what he has to double check!"

Nobody remembers this but before the very first episode AMC was using the late Amy Winehouse song "I'm No Good" to promote the first episode and there was something about that song having a feel like it was from the past that really fit Mad Men and I can tell you it sucked me in to tune in for the first show and then I stayed for the whole ride

@@realexkav My personal opinion is that there was some kind of copyright infraction because of how abruptly AMC stopped using it. You hopped on board late but hope you went back and saw the earlier seasons as they were high quality TV

@@ivandesantis858 of course, I have seen the whole show countless of times. Even translated a huge chunk of it for German subtitles back when it aired. Some other shows come close in quality, but none of them have a place in my heart like MM does

@@realexkav Wow that's impressive ( the German translation ) Mad Men is high on my list for all time favorites and I feel the way you do about Homicide Life on The Street but I refuse to engage in these GOAT (greatest of all time) discussions over what show is the GOAT . I just find that so juvenile and stupid . Everybody has their different tastes and there can be a short list for that designation but there are no absolutes. I have several that I admire greatly with Mad Men being one of them.

This is terrible and hilarious. I can't tell if they don't get it or get it so much that they are enjoying being able to edit the story like that

The nonsequiturs annoyed me so I just didn't watch them.
It's cool that you've preserved these. They are strange artifacts.

Haha I kinda enjoy how increasingly annoying they get. But yeah, just preserving them for the MM nerds was the main point

Never seen these previews before. But if you like a show, you will tune in a week later, so why would you need a comprehensible preview anyway? Thanks for uploading.
