Jen - These are so cute and with a folded star in coordinating fabrics it makes a great Christmas present. But I changed your instructions slightly and sewed the coasters in two steps. First I layered the background fabric, a 4 1/2" piece of batting, and the inner (not seen) fabric together as your described but I sewed an X corner to corner on the diagonal to prequilt these together. Then I followed your instructions for layering the four patch folded fabrics on top of my prequilted square, sewing and turning. Having the batting be 1/4" smaller all around made for less bulk when turning.
I am a beginner and love your tutorials. This was the first project I made. I made them as gifts for a summer girls weekend using summer/beach squares. They were a hit so I then made them as gifts for a family/girls Thanksgiving shopping weekend using Christmas/Holiday squares. I also made a set for myself using the hourglass pattern. So fun!
We’re very happy to hear that you are enjoying this fun project, Marcy! Thanks so much for watching, and we’ll keep our eye out for your project photos. -Michelle
Darling coasters, a great idea, and the tutorial is excellent (as always). I plan to make this with my granddaugher for her first sewing project. Thank you for sharing 😍
What a great way to use charm packs and what wonderful gifts to make - this charm pack would go great with hot coco mixes and all the goodies as a great gift! Love the idea!!!
Hi, Jen! The first time I saw this coaster was at a quilt show about 15 years ago, they were given out as you came in the door. Still have mine & my sister's (she passed 2018).
Thanks for refreshing my memory on making these. They are so nice to make as gifts. Made a lot of these years ago. Will be making some for friends & family. I just love how easy these are to make. Have a great week! 🧵✂️😊
Just came across this video and sat right down and made one! So quick and easy - and adorable! I used a charm pack I had on hand. Thanks for a 'charm'-ing idea!
Love these so much! I make new ones each year and at Holiday Parties, I serve my wine or champagne in stemmed glasses with one of these at the base (the opening allows you to slip a wine glass base inside) to help guests keep up with their glass and also protect my furniture. I love this fabric!
I just made six of these following your instructions. Thank you so much for your great instructions. These are going to be Christmas presents. I just love these! Also made your fabric Christmas ornaments those will be Christmas presents as well.
I love making these for housewarming gifts, Christmas 🎄 Hot Chocolate baskets, sports themes for Rec rooms, and even have a couple for mycsewing room area. I make them much larger and make them into Hot Pads for a Hostess gift at holidays or house warming gifts.
I absolutely LOVE this idea! And if you are having a dinner party or a wine party, etc. You could put numbers in there for a drawing or gift cards, etc!
Hello Jen and SF team. You are so inspiring. I just love this idea. It will a part of my Christmas gifts this year. Keep up the great and awesome work.
My favorite go to coaster pattern. Funny I didn't even think about using a scrap for the part that ends inside till the last time I made one. Talk about a duh moment. 😅
Thank you so much to share this video. Had a charm pack Kaffe Fassett fabric and have made some coasters today using the video. They turned out so nice. 😊
A girlfriend taught me this when I was a beginner 30 yrs ago. What's interesting is that I fold my squares diagonally, to form triangles--everything else is the same!
Thanks so much! I was looking for a way to use up scraps from sewing masks! Have had some lovely Christmas fabric in my stash just waiting for this project! Take care!
Hi Jen - LOVE this idea, I did make on as a practice and I did something just slightly different. When you sandwiched the back and inside middle with the wadding, I then quilted that together. Then placed and machined the 4 pieces of folded fabric on top as you did. Then, your back is quilted and I thought it may help it stop shifting when they are washed. GREAT VIDEO - I like it when you demonstrate a project. I loved the material you used, but I don't seem to be able to purchase that particular Charm Pack in the UK grrrr. Thanks again for all your lovely videos. Take care, Linda
That sounds like a fun variation! We are happy you enjoyed this tutorial. Thank you for watching!! And yes, this particular charm pack collection sold quickly after we posted this, but we do have this collection available in yardage, and stay tuned for an adorable coffee-themed collection (Cafe Culture) coming soon! - Michelle
I appreciate and benefit from all of Jen’s tutorials! Thank you, Linda, for sharing your tip of sandwiching the back, middle and wadding. I tried your version using thermalam for the wadding. I’m so pleased with the result! Thank you both!
I have a couple of these I received as goodies at quilt retreats! I love them, but I just haven't made any yet. I think these would be great teacher gifts for my granddaughter to make 🙂
For the inside fabric you could also use a fabric with text to have a nice hidden message. I have some printable fabric. May make a few with personal message. Would be fun to see how long it takes a person to find it.
Hi Jennifer, was that wadding you put inside. I have heavy and medium weight interfacing, thermolam, vlieseline G700, H640, H630 or insul - brite that you put in oven gloves. Can I use any of them in coasters, placemats and pot holders. I see you didn't do the stitch in the ditch.
Hi Leanna, Yes, Jennifer did put a layer of batting in this coaster, but that is optional. This project still turns out great without the batting too! If you do decide to add batting, any of the ones you suggested would be fine. Happy sewing! -Bethany
Great question! There are a few variables that play into this such as the temperature of the cup/bowl being used. You should check our this informational link with four "best batting" options for coasters: craftysewingsew.co.uk/the-4-best-battings-for-coasters/ 💖 -Michelle
Hi GilbertGrapeApe - You can certainly add some rickrac- We recommend placing it down on the stack before you add the top 4 layers. Hope this helps! -Michelle
Hey Jen did you know the stem of a wine glass fits inside the fold and then your guests know which glass is theirs when they set it down. You can make these in several colors.....
Perfect gift idea!! We're experiencing a beautiful rainy autumn day here in North Idaho - time to cozy up with a blanket and a warm cup of deliciousness! ☕☕-Michelle
