Great teacher. I am brand new at sewing. I was given a sewing machine for Christmas. I wanted to add to my wool textile art but now I will see some coasters. Haven't seen since I was in 6th grade. Thanks for teaching.
I is a great suggestion about reducing your stitch length when you start sewing and when you are at the end. This helps not to have the thickness of a back stitch. I have never seen this done, but it makes so much sense. Can’t wait to start using this method. Thanks for sharing your video with all of us. ❤
Yay! I am so happy I helped! This is the way I have been doing it for a long time, but I am never sure if it is common knowledge or not. Thank you for sharing this! ❤️
Thank you you made it all so easy. I have never never been crafty like many of my dear sisters nor a great intentional giver. It is 11/2023 and I want to be able to give handmade gifts next year.
You are so welcome! Yay! So happy you are going to make handmade gifts for next year! Let me know if you have any additional questions. Happy to help! ❤️
I was just thinking of making mug rugs and came across your tutorial, loved it, thank you. I am also excited about lowering my stitches to lock them. Thank you for the advice.
This is really cute! I’d like to start now and make some for surprise end-of-the-year gifts for my book club friends. If I started now, I might be less likely to panic at a deadline!!
I liked your hint of using a really small seam allowance to lock the stitch. I also liked the use of the stitch in the ditch foot to top stitch the edge.
Just happened onto your video and really enjoyed watching your method of creating 4 coasters at a time. These are so handy to have and give as last minute gifts, as well as including with gift baskets for wedding showers, housewarming, etc...
Hi Kris and fellow quilters! Four at a time is very clever. Thanks very much for the method. I like to use painters tape for quilting mug rugs candle mats, and table runners. My walking foot makes life much easier too. Happy quilting to all from British Columbia, Canada.😀🇨🇦
You are so welcome! Painter's tape for machine quilting is becoming more and more popular. I've been doing it for years and I am sure you have, too. Who knew we were ahead of our time? Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I am happy you enjoyed this!
I'm a newbie to your channel I was just scrolling through RUclips and I saw your table topper. I love the tip on quilting of using the masking tape. How simple to get evenly spaced quilting without measuring and actually marking. I can't wait to try these. I think I'm going to make mine just a little larger though either I'm going to cut a 12 in square or 13 haven't decided for sure. This is a great fat quarter project. In fact I think I may make some coasters and your table topper out of the same fabrics.
@@SewtheDistance I just realized I had already posted a comment…lol…it was a senior moment, I guess! That happens once in a while since I’m almost mid sixties. 😆. At least you know I really like them!😃
I have tried a few videos on making coasters, but this is the only one which comes out lovely and neat. I did draw the lines with a ruler using a water soluble pencil, and they look great. Thank you for this tutorial.
I noticed you do not backstitch to lock the seam! I have never heard of turning your stitch down to lock the stitches. I will definitely give this a try! Thank you for your easy to follow tutorial!🤗
YAY! So glad you like this technique! When I try to backstitch while topstitching, it always looks messy and this, to me, gives it a cleaner look and does the job well. Glad it is helpful for you, too. ❤️
New to your channel and a newbie quilter. I was just making some coasters too, but these look a bit easier, i’m going to give it a try. Thanks and I did subscribe and a thumbs up! ❤️❤️❤️ I might be doing some binge watching too!
Thank you so much! I have been away from RUclips for a little bit as we are remodeling and the house is a mess. I am thrilled to see your comment! So happy this is helpful! I am honored to be part of your quilting journey. It is a wonderful art form that has blessed my life in more ways than I could have imagined when I started. I hope the same is true for you! Let me know if you have any questions, and I will be back (hopefully!) next week with new videos!
Really good tips, my goodness I didn't even think about directional and non directional fabrics, matching backs for a neater edge, quilting the whole piece then cutting and gluing the opening, Thank you so much, I will also try my foot with the thing on it for an even edge. Have a lovely weekend, 💖🐾
Great question! I haven’t tried it, but you could use vinyl or even a waterproof spray or treatment after they are made. There is a fusible vinyl that could be put on the fabric, too.
😂😂I feel so goofy! Here I was making individual coaster patterns..duh make one big and cut into 4 coasters?! 😂😂 yep, i'm getting old, because thats too simple a solution. ❤❤❤
This is great! I can see why it's addictive, I'm itching to go already :D I have a question, though. I'll be sewing by hand since I don't have a sewing machine - do you think the "quilting the whole big square and then cutting it smaller" technique will still work, or will it start to come undone?
Ohhh! Great question! Admittedly, I am not a hand quilter, so I may not be the best to ask, but I would think it would work, right? I guess it depends on how much you like to baste. Eeek. I wish I could help you more! Hopefully someone here will know the answer to that. I can try to find out for you!
Apologies if I missed it but what's the distance in from the edge that you're sewing on the final circuit? (I guess it has to be something less than 1/4" or the opening won't stay closed?)
I can't remember if I said or not, so no worries! I go in about 1/8". If you have a stitch-in-the-ditch foot for your machine, that usually works well, too. Hope this helps!
Oh, good question! Sorry I didn't mention this. I top stitch about 1/8" in from the edge, but as long as you are consistent, it will work out. Hope this helps!
Instead of using tape, use a fabric marker and a ruler to mark lines and then sew on the lines. There are several different types of markers that work great. Some remove by ironing, some by wetting them and some disappear in a few hours. Much easier and faster than using the tape.
Great thought! I’ve used fabric markers before on these coasters, but if the coasters get too cold or too hot, the ink reappears. I find tape to be a better option because of this. It’s not for everyone, however. Use what works best for you. ❤️
Great question. Yes! It is completely water soluble. If you don’t want to put them in the washing machine, you can just wipe it with a damp cloth. You can also just leave it. It will eventually break down. Hope this helps.
Great tutorial, thank you. Do you use just regular pva Elmers glue? Also, would the insulbright work? Was thinking it would offer more protection for surfaces and assume it's easily washable?
I use regular Elmers school glue. Is that PVA? I’m not sure. It’s washable and wonderful! I think insulbright would work, as long as you don’t put it in the microwave. Not that anyone would, but if you are giving them as a gift or selling them, I would make sure to include that information. Also, I know some people put terrycloth in theirs. I haven’t tried it, but I’m sure it would work. ❤️
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. The backing fabric is the same size as the front, so 5" for these coasters. Hope this helps! My apologizes for the confusion. ❤️

Great video for beginners! I have a tip, when top-stitching your opening closed turn your length down to a 1.6 or so. It will help it stay closed !!

Great idea to use denim as quilting sandwich “batting” probably gives a little more weight.
