I have made this type of baby blanket -no batting needed; however, I definitely want batting in my placemats. I made the turning opening a little larger; measured the placemat; cut batting about 1/4” smaller in length and width; stuffed into finished fabric mat; wiggled, arranged and smoothed batting into fabric; pinned carefully into place; stitched opening closed; and then did some simple quilting to hold all layers together. I found it very helpful to build a test placemat with some less than precious fabric. Turned out great! Once I made a couple, they went together quickly. Thanks for the great idea of using the baby blanket method for quick placemats!
Hi Jen & Michelle. This is a fabulous tutorial and so easy to follow. I've just finished two placemats today in some fab Christmas fabric. Will be sending to my daughter for her and hubby for Xmas. This is the best video I've found for clear, no fuss and easy construction for this type of placemat which comes out perfect every time as long as you are concise with your measurements. I enjoyed making these and thrilled with the results. I added fusible fleece interfacing to make them more sturdy. I also made a matching half apron. These mats are a great gift idea. 🎄👏😊💖 Thanks so much from Australia 🦘
What fantastic ideas you have added to this project! Happy that you enjoyed it and I bet they are stunning! Feel free to share project photos with us on our socials! Thanks for your comment! 🎄❤️🥰 - Abby
It's nice when the instructor leaves the error in their tutorial, as you did with the "oops, ironed the wrong edge." It shows the viewer how to correct that type of error, and it's comforting to a beginner like me to see that even the experts make mistakes sometimes. (To quote one of my favorite movies, "From failing, you learn. From success, not so much.") The placemat turned out absolutely gorgeous, and the method looks pretty easy. Adding this to my "crafts I might actually make someday" playlist 🙂
Thank you Jen for such a clear tutorial - even for showing your “mistake”. We all do these things, but you showed us how to just carry on and sort it out. Thank you.
Thank you so much! I had to watch several times to see how those corners were sewn. I made my border 1” so it ended up looking like a binding. Perfect! Just what I wanted. Thank you! Made one for my nightstand.
I have made three and checked the video again. I realise I made a slight mistake on sewing across the mitred corners. Now I know how to perfect my projects, thank you again.
I make the self-binding receiving blankets with this method. These directions are, by far, the most comprehensive and easiest to follow of all that I’ve read. Thanks!
Oct 2024. So happy I found you, my next project is Christmas table mats and cutlery holders and this is exactly the tutorial I needed. Thank you from west coast of Ireland 👏🏻👏🏻☘️☘️☘️
We are happy to have you here! ☘️ You are going to have a lot of fun! Glad that our tutorials can help you and we appreciate your support! Thank you for your comment! 😊 - Abby
Thank you for the great tutorial. It works out quite nice. I like it. I made the first one and turned it before I snipped the corners, just to check my miters. It felt quite flimsy. So I added a layer of fusible fleece (pellon 987F) 17" x 11 3/4" centered on the wrong side of the back piece before I sewed the project together. Then proceed as in the tutorial. This made a much more substantial feeling placement.
Thanks, this is beautiful. One thing I do to help myself - on the opening for turning, while still right sides together, I use my hera marker to crease a fold line, just lining up my ruler on the seam and then creasing the gap with the creasing tool. Helps me because I'm so sloppy at closing those openings. I don't know why I can't be as neat as you. I hope you get to enjoy friends and family this year. I've missed those gatherings, too. Thank you for the tutorial.
I love watching you and listening to your gentle voice. During this pandemic I have made at least 200 of those self binding receiving blankets for donation. I was a flannel hoarder. I can’t wait to use this method for placemats. Thanks so much for this tutorial.
I just love the simplicity of your tutorials and the detail of explaining each step. It's an inspiration for us all to make these thank you again so so much
Me again! I decided to try this method on a table topper. I basted & turned the first corner to make sure I was doing it correctly, and was quite pleased to see that I had. I then confidently stitched and clipped the remaining three corners and...oops. I somehow managed to box them instead of mitering! I think what I did was line up the folded edge with the 45 degree line rather than one of the straight-across-the-ruler ones (see? Learning from failure; I'll not make that mistake again LOL). Good thing table toppers are small as it didn't take long to rip the seams. I made sure to baste & check *every* corner before putting in the "real" stitches & trimming the fabric the second time. Turned out pretty well if I do say so myself! I still need to do the topstitching, which will probably happen tomorrow since I ran out of navy thread. Thank you again for posting this excellent tutorial.
I watched this video everything I make self binding placemats. I am making popsicle placemats for my kids for Christmas gifts. I try to make placemats ora runner for every season. This year these will be fun for summer. Thanks for sharing your wonderful tutorials.
I do like to make placemats for each month/season and have most months already done. But I love this simple technique for the binding! Wish I had seen this much earlier. But from this point on, I will be using this fantastic idea! 😊Thanks for sharing it! ❤
Easy peasy! I made Momma a Christmas set and she loves them. The back fabric was the same and the top fabric was different. I keep wondering who else needs a set! Thank you!
Magic!!!!! I didn’t use this for making a placemat. I needed some way to bind (and line) something quite thick and easily frayed. This worked a treat!!!!! 10/10 for video tutorial ❤️
Thanks for the way you explained the steps for the corners. I’ve made dozens of the self-binding baby blankets. Every so often I start a new batch and stitch the wrong way on the corner. When you do that, btw, you get a box instead of a flat piece! 😀
Thank you, so much, for sharing this video! Your instructions are so easy to follow. I made ten placemats for my Thanksgiving dinner table this year, and had enough material left over that I made drink coasters to match!
These instructions are concise but complete, so clear visually and verbally. Gave me the confidence to try a table runner, and it worked out really well. Thank you!
I think I would put some of the warm fleece (padding) inside to protect table from hot plates and just stitch it down in the final closing of the seam. So pretty! I know my gifts this year!
I was just thinking of how I was going to bind off a “table runner” that a friend asked me to make that’s the same size of her table. I am very kindly not correcting her in that this is no longer a table runner but a table cloth. She wanted a quilted one out of some very cute Halloween/magical cat fabric I found. I’ll be taking the idea some others have had for inserting the batting into it once I get it sewn together with this method. Thanks for sharing this and making a free download as well, you saved me quite a bit of time figuring this out as I am still pretty new to quilting and haven’t yet finished one whole quilt yet lol.
This is brilliant! I can see that it would be easy to adjust the measurements to make a table runner too. For another variation, you could piece the centre section. I have used your grocery bag technique to make many Christmas gifts. I just started some for Christmas 2022. Your 'magic' pillowcases are another favourite. Thank you so much!

Hello! I hope you had an awesome day! I had a very busy but fun filled day in my sewing room ironing more fabrics and now I get to hand quilt. Thank you for posting your video.
Years ago I purchased the Lil Sprout self binding receiving blanket from Shabby. It sat in its packaging until just recently I pulled it out to make the blanket. What was I waiting for it was so much fun, easy and adorable. I gifted it to a newborn who’s parents requested I make something for their new arrival. I will be making these lovely placements too. Thank you. All of your tutorials and the newest At Home tutorials are great.
We're glad to hear that you enjoy these self-binding projects. They're definitely easy to create and gift. Thank you for sharing your sweet gifting story with us! 💖 -Michelle
I recently purchased some Christmas fabric . I had no idea what to make with it and lo and behold I came across this fabulous tutorial. Jen makes it look so easy and fun. My family will be excited to receive such exquisite placemats. Thank you Jen and all of you for constantly showing me how to better my sewing skills

You explained so well and definitely makes me want to give it a try. The end product is so neat. Lovely fabric too. Thank you very much for this tutorial.
These placemats are so beautiful! I am person who is scared of a sewing machine. No one around to teach me except RUclips. I want to make these so bad! Going to download the pattern and practice on making some homemade paper towels first , so I learn to get my stitches straight. I want to learn to sew!
Thank you! Thank you! I decided o make placemats fir everyone at our Christmas Day gathering - 24! And the thing that is slowing me down / kicking me is the binding. This saves me soooo much time and aggravation.
Thanks for the wonderful tutorial Jen. I used the measurements in your pattern as a guideline for making a table runner. I managed to track down the poinsettia fabric and used a black fabric with metallic gold swirls for the backing. It turned out beautiful- and just in time for Christmas. Merry Christmas!
That is great that this project was able to help you with your table runner! I bet it is beautiful! Feel free to share project photos with us! Thank you for your comment and Merry Christmas! - Abby
@@mangohogplumsummertime7191 I had to look really hard to find the poinsettia fabric, but finally manged to find some on Etsy. I found a nice black with gold metallic swirls ("Holiday Wishes" Black Gold by Hoffman Fabrics) for my backing at Shabby Fabrics. Hope this helps!
@@mangohogplumsummertime7191 I finally found the poinsettia fabric on Etsy. The backing fabric was "Holiday Wishes" Black Gold by Hoffman Fabrics which I purchased from Shabby Fabrics.
Thank you Michelle. Yes, it did work! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Many thanks for all of your videos and the help that you provide through them. God's blessings to you and yours! Madelyn (Athens, Greece)
Thank you for another great video Jen! I had a go working from some written instructions and managed to get three out of four of my angles wrong when I marked, sewed and trimmed. 🙄So I went to RUclips… saw that Shabby Fabrics had a video explaining how to do it and knew all would be made clear and straight forward! Thank you for such helpful guidance. Merry Christmas
Thank you Jen for this pattern! We plan to do an auction at church to raise postage money for Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes. I can whip up a few placemat sets in no time! Brilliant pattern! 💕Cathy
I have a bunch of Christmas fabric to placemat and napkin sets with for a craft show. I love this idea since they do not require batting plus I already make the napkins with mitered corners. Might use a decorative stitch in a contrasting color for sewing around the placemat for closing. Thank you for another new idea.
I am so confused, I'm going to go slowly and trust this project, wish me luck 🥰 Thank You for making this tutorial. I did get the free download also. I can't thank you enough for both. Hugs to you Karen

These placemats are so beautiful! I am person who is scared of a sewing machine. No one around to teach me except RUclips. I want to make these so bad! Going to download the pattern and practice on making some homemade paper towels first , so I learn to get my stitches straight. I want to learn to sew!
That sounds like a great plan! We're glad this project has inspired you and we look forward to hearing about your progress. 💖 -Michelle

- Abby
I would love to add a photo of my table runner, but for the life of me I can’t figure out how 😕

Hello Debra can you say where you bought the fabric?
@@mangohogplumsummertime7191 I had to look really hard to find the poinsettia fabric, but finally manged to find some on Etsy. I found a nice black with gold metallic swirls ("Holiday Wishes" Black Gold by Hoffman Fabrics) for my backing at
Shabby Fabrics. Hope this helps!
@@mangohogplumsummertime7191 I finally found the poinsettia fabric on Etsy. The backing fabric was "Holiday Wishes" Black Gold by Hoffman Fabrics which I purchased from Shabby Fabrics.
I love these placemats. Yes I was also thinking of using a interfacing. Keep up the great work.

We are happy that you enjoyed this video and appreciate your support! Thanks for your comment and Merry Christmas! 🎄 - Abby

We're happy this project inspires you. Thank you for watching! 💖 -Michelle
Thank you Jen for this pattern! We plan to do an auction at church to raise postage money for Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes. I can whip up a few placemat sets in no time! Brilliant pattern! 💕Cathy

Beautiful!!! I've done the self binding blankets, so I could do this!
You totally can! We're happy this tutorial inspired you! -Michelle
I have a bunch of Christmas fabric to placemat and napkin sets with for a craft show. I love this idea since they do not require batting plus I already make the napkins with mitered corners. Might use a decorative stitch in a contrasting color for sewing around the placemat for closing. Thank you for another new idea.
We're happy you enjoy this delightful project!! Thanks sew much for watching!! 💖 -Michelle
I am so confused, I'm going to go slowly and trust this project, wish me luck 🥰 Thank You for making this tutorial. I did get the free download also. I can't thank you enough for both. Hugs to you Karen
Definitely take your time. We believe in you, and we're looking forward to your project photos! -Michelle
So wonderfully explained...you have gorgeous fabrics in USA...nothing like that in South Africa😪
You can get in sa. Saw only last Saturday around R300 pm. 😊
Love this. I needed a way to enlarge my placemats as didn't have enough width for height and this technique will make that possible. Thank you!
