I am at an age where I appreciate a handmade gift over a store bought one. During the Great Depression parents often collected toys their children had, which needed repairing, and they'd repair them. Mom's would make little dresses for dolls. It's time to get back to that.
I love making handmade presents. Although I think I may have bitten off slightly more than I could chew with the patchwork bags I have made for friends and family this year. All hand stitched too! I must have been nuts. 🙄
I love making handmade presents. As do my friends. Although I think I bit of slightly more than I could chew with the patchwork bags I have made for birthday presents this year! Being hexagons they were stitched by hand. Finished the last one today, although I still have the pincushion and needlecase to finish. Then a set for me, but that will be a 2024 project! 😆
Thank you for this tutorial. I'm excited to share this experience with my 90 year old mother who will absolutely love being creative with a little xmas decoration making. Sew simple yet sew elegant!
My mother used to make these. She sewed them all by hand. Due to the circumstances by which I left home I didn’t have one. This pattern will allow me to make some for my adult children. I would like to tell you how much I respect you. I was a member of the Women’s Army Corps for six years myself. Thank you for all you do!!!
What a lovely memory of your mother. Thank you for all that you do! I am glad to hear that the pattern will allow you to make gifts for your children. They are going to love it! - Yajaira
At first i was a bit disappointed that this had to be sewed but i soon got over that watching you, plus i have a sewing machine so i figured once you got the hang of this you could fly through with the sewing. I'm from the UK and what i call REAL crafting has only taken off in the last 10 years so there's not a lot of video's to watch. I really appreciated too that you took the time to explain so well, believe me not everybody does. As it's a bit too close to Christmas for me to start these now i'm thinking of starting them after the holidays and making a ton of them all ready and waiting to gift to someone, i just hope they turn out as well as yours. Thank you so much for sharing with us and Happy Holidays to you. Shirley from the UK.🎄
Thank you for this wonderful video. I can't wait to make a few for some family and friends. What's really cool is that no two ornaments have to be alike. Thanks Jen,
thanks for the updated video. really glad to see you closing the rotary blade before setting done your cutter! and use your awesome attachment to sew on button with machine.
A couple of suggestions: I use a crochet hook to help me turn corners. Also, you could put a button on both sides of the ornament. I love your idea of pulling the thread through and cutting it off to bury the end of the slipstitch and the button! Your videos are so encouraging. I can't believe I can make something, and then you reassure us, and I believe!
What a wonderful tutorial! I'm a teacher and wanted to give my fellow teachers a little handmade something for the holidays and these ornaments will be perfect. (Not to mention this project will help me use up some of those scraps that are taking over my sewing room, haha.) Thanks again!
Thank you for a great Christmas ornament, I want to make one and with my Bernina I will embroidery my children name and year, to make it extra special. 🌲
You can hide final knot on button by wrapping the thread UNDER the button (around the threads) several times, make a loop, and go through the loop. To start, you will have to come up from the back and the angle the threaded need down the button hole towards the side so you don't go through to the back.
I’ve never made a Cathedral Window ornament before. Your tutorial is sew thorough that I’m going to try and make one. Thank you for sharing with us! Wish me luck. Peace & blessings...
Your site is one of the best I have ever come across. I'm just sorry I didn't find it sooner. It is going to be the first site I access each h day. Thank you for your ideas.

My mum's tip for sewing buttons on anything is to use double strand thread, knot thread then thread button onto needle from back to the front, then through another hole back to the back of button & slip needle between the 2 strands of thread. Makes it so easy to get started & it also hides the knot. Hope that makes sense.
When I add or replace buttons, especially on heavier fabrics, I then bring the final thread to the front, underneath the button, then wind the thread around itself right underneath the button, then knot it right underneath and trim the tail. Then, you don't have a lump showing anywhere at the back because it's trimmed underneath the button at the front. If you look at jackets, especially at higher end ones, that's often how it's done if the buttons are affixed by hand.
I love getting your Christmas ornaments kits. I started making them for my children and grandchildren. They lGaylove them. I customized the felt balls last year. My grandson plays hockey so his had hockey sticks and pucks. My granddaughter plays soccer, so hers was a soccer ball with her high school intiials on. Thank you for your kits. Looking forward to getting more next year. Gayle Nocera
I have a few small squares of fabric that I had made matching dresses for my sisters, Mom and Aunt (Mom's sister) for Easter. While it is bunnies and so forth, us 3 girls are the only girls, is having all boys for cousins. When we all came out we either got playfully teased and We drove our oldest brother crazy because there where 5 of us all with the same dress on and where "threatened" to never do that again! Lol. So the fabric has a lot of memories and the bigger scraps where ruined from our "finished" basement flooding a whopping over 2 feet! It will be bittersweet because My Aunt (I only had 2, and my other Aunt I have only seen a couple times in my life, with a occasional bday card when she remembers, she older. So this Aunt we where VERY close with) this Aunt, Aunt B, she Died very suddenly from covid-19 in early March. She was found incoherent by her hisband's caregiver, rushed to the hospital and died the next morning. We didn't know it was in our state yet. She actually would have been the first known to die from it in our state, but her test was lost, but it was confirmed from symptoms, and the fact that my grown cousin that had rushed to her side, got it a week later. The state 2 days later went to lockdown and my parents are too high risk, so we didn't get to go to her memorial in July. Dear Auntie B was the one that got me into sewing, teaching me how to sew my first button, and she sewed us when we where little our very own little house on the prarie dresses, matching bonnets and color cordanating pinafore. This pattern reminds me alot of her and a style she would have made for a quilt. And probably would have made this ornament. Sorry for getting all sappy, but this sure gave me a rush of memories and feelings. Whoever reads this, please stay safe and well and talk to your loved ones today, because they may not be hear tomorrow. If you aren't taking this covid-19 seriously, I lost my Aunt to this and what they go through is totally awful and heart wrenching. It is horrible to loose a loved one that way. I have 2 brothers that had it in CA in January (they thought they had the worst cold ever, later a friend that they actually gave it to tested positive with antibodies) my Cousin's girlfriend's daughter had it without knowing and the same cousin got it. Who insedendly has a doctorate in nurse Andsthaist, and ended up working in the in a big hospital's Covid-19 ward (says you just can't realize what this does to a person unless you see it in person, making it worse when you know what it permanently does to them) it made him so sick he almost went to the ER himself, saying her had never been so sick in his life, but he didn't go because he knew how over worked they where and didn't want to burden them. Thankfully he got better and heal 100%. Also have 2 different family members that work in big hospitals (one is head of something) and they have both told us as well that this is huge and to stay home. It is no joke folks and knowing your loved one probably died alone is heartbreaking beyond words. Don't take chances. You only have 1 life.

I am going to try this today. I just joined a craft group who make items for nursing home patients. I am going to try to make these ornaments for the patients. I love your tutorials which make it so much easier to make things. I did go to the patterns, but I could not find just the pattern.

Have you thought about adding a contrasting button to the front and smaller one to the back? Sew them together and bury your licking knits under the back button.
That's a great idea! I've done that on a few of the ornaments I've made for myself, and used the back button to anchor the front one in place, like a tufted cushion. -Bethany
This is Marilyn my husband Chris died last month and I intend to make blue ornaments for his children and grandchildren from his ties so I will make this ornament double sided rather than plain on the back. My tip is to use ladder stitch to close the opening as it makes a much neater finish. This is one of the styles I intend to try. Thank you.
Hi Marilyn - We are very sorry for your loss, of what seems like an amazing man. We're glad this project has inspired you to repurpose his apparel into lasting memories. Thank you for sharing this with us. 💖 -Michelle
Hi Misty - I believe Jen was moving the needle to the far left & far right when using the zipper foot, but you may want to check with your Bernina rep with your zipper foot specifics as I don't know if you're using the same zipper foot. -Michelle
I love this! You stated in the beginning that we can buy the pattern but at timestamp 2:17, you said there is also a free downloaded pattern available. I can't find it anywhere! I've taken notes of your tutorial which you present so well but I would really like the precise instructions in written form.

Can this be made a bit smaller? My Grannie had cathedral window quilts w squares finished to aprox 3 inches by 3 inches. What would the cut our sizes be?
You can certainly adjust these to any size you'd like. We just made some pot holders in the Cathedral Window design here: ruclips.net/video/K1uy2ss-vWk/видео.html And since these ornaments measure to approximately 4½" x 4½", you can probably just start by trimming off equal amounts of half or quarter inches from each piece of fabric until you reach your desired size. 💖 -Michelle

I add a button to the back as well, as an accent and it helped me hide the thread ends.

I sew on a Bernina as well. How far over did you move the needle when using the zipper foot?
Hi Misty - I believe Jen was moving the needle to the far left & far right when using the zipper foot, but you may want to check with your Bernina rep with your zipper foot specifics as I don't know if you're using the same zipper foot. -Michelle
Beautiful! Thanks so much for the tutorial.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching! - Yajaira
So pretty
Thank you! - Yajaira
You might want to fidget a little with the ornament but you could just make the knot under the button. That is how I was taught.
Great idea! -Michelle
Merci beaucoup belle video
Nous sommes heureux que vous ayez apprécié cette vidéo ! Merci pour votre commentaire! - Abby
I love this! You stated in the beginning that we can buy the pattern but at timestamp 2:17, you said there is also a free downloaded pattern available. I can't find it anywhere! I've taken notes of your tutorial which you present so well but I would really like the precise instructions in written form.
We're happy you enjoy this project! You should be able to find the Free Download for this project here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video/226 -Michelle
@@ShabbyFabrics Thank you! I found the diagram which is very helpful but I thought there were written directions also.
@@donnaschreiner8860 Our Free Downloads are designed to accompany the video projects, so we don't typically have written instructions. The pattern that is mentioned in the beginning of the video contains written instructions and color images. www.shabbyfabrics.com/p40294 -Michelle
💖 -Michelle
I usually pick an ornament and make one for each person in my family at Christmas. Our friends. Basically anyone I see. Lol
That's a lovely tradition!! Thank you for watching ♥️ -Michelle
Can I make to front so it would be the same in the back?
Hi Magdalena - You probably can, but we haven't tried that way. Glad you enjoy this pattern! -Michelle
Thank you for the tutorials! I always learn so much. Could we use fusible web instead of glue?
Great question! Yes you are more than welcome to use any glue that you feel will secure it down. - Yajaira
You might just use lightweight fusible Webb on both the accent fabrics, not as messy as glue.
How/where can I buy the pattern please? I love this project!!!!
We're glad you enjoy this fun ornament project! You can find the pattern here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/p40294/cathedral-window-ornaments-pattern ✨ -Michelle
