Andariel is attractive... really?! Well, if you like a giant sized demoness with claws and hooves, not to mention the poisonous stingers and that angry look of "I'm going to eat you (and not in a good way either)" stompin' its way towards you, then I guess your standard of what's attractive is a bit different from mine. 😎

I would say there is more argument to be made for Griswald resisting Andariel's wilds due to his piousness. In Diablo 2 Griswald's set is of the paladin variety leading use to make the connection that at one time, before he put down his sword for a hammer, Griswald was a man of deep devote faith and a paladin of all things. This would give him the conviction and fortitude to resist the demonic feminine wilds of Andariel. And rather than being spiteful or hurt, she instead had him twisted into a perverse twisted undead to mock his former role as a protector of the living and a profession that deeply respects the peace of the dead.

Greetings! I always felt it was his dedication to his craft that kept him from the Allure. It not that he doesn't think they are pretty or something of the sort, but rather he is a man of focus, dedication, and sheer will. One of the things Diablo 2 did that I didn't like compared to 1 and 3 was the integration of the blacksmith and their story. To me someone who can use and seeks an anvil of hell requires talent and skill that comes thru dedication.

This I feel would be the better explanation. Paladins, being holy warriors, would despise all things unholy including the undead. What worse fate for a former paladin than to become the one thing he hated. This theory could be supported by Farla in act 2; she was a former paladin turned blacksmith, maybe there is a connection between her and Griswold.

Of course, the real reason was most likely that Griswold was probably the one NPC that players had the most interactions with in the first game and whom they felt most connected to. He was also the one NPC to keep his wits together and actively fight back against the terrors that befell Tristram (getting Wirt back from the Cathedral, sending the hero to gather items that he can use to smith mighty artefacts to help end the demon scourge etc.). Seeing Griswold as minion of the arch evils and being forced with the choice to either put him down or let him continue existing in this gruesome way was simply the surest way to get an emotional reaction out of veteran players. "It's personal now".
Also, the stoic, unphased craftsman (and most of the time a blacksmith) who'd rather admire a skillfully crafted item than a beautiful (demonic) woman is simply a fantasy trope and has most likely been back then already, too.

  • @Artanis99

I'd imagine that seeing those lights means he was tempted (in other words he also felt the pull of lust), but was powerful enough to resist. Diablo wanted Griswold to watch everyone he protected being torn apart by the demons he fought, and then remember it to inflict as much terror as possible. Or maybe it was what remained of Adrian trying to spare his allies for as long as possible. It's all speculation of course. The developers wanted you to see the NPC you spoke to the most in the first game turned into a boss mob to drive home that nobody got out. It was a pretty cool moment seeing him for the first time in II.

I agree. I imagine the devs / designers sitting around brain storiming about revisting tristram and someone just goes "how about making the player fight griswold, wouldn't that be cool?". He was perhaps the only one tough enough to survive the attack on tristram for a bit and corruption being a big theme in diablo his fate just fits for me (it's like that trope / pattern in movies where the toughest and strongest of the good guys fights bravely but the music and slowmo camera already give away.. he's gonna die a heroic, dramatic death). Also none of the other original NPCs of tristram would have scared me as he did upon first seeing him coming at me.. except maybe a corrupted pepin :D

I don't think they actually put this much thought into Griswold's fate back then tbh. I think it was more of a "shock value" to the players who made their trip back to Tristram, to see an iconic character have such a sad outcome. At least that's how I felt as a kid, seeing Griswold among the undead felt like he "refused" to die, but still was cursed and had to linger among the living, possibly doing harm to his friends and those who he once cared for.

There is another posibility about griswold beyond sexuality that coincides with old legends. Willpower. Compared with other civilians griswold seem to be very resilient physically and mentally. He confronted at some point the Butcher, But didn't end up as traumatized as Wirt , let alone Farhnham. So Griswold just at a lack of better wording, had balls of steel.
And this is why Andariel turned him into a mindless zombie. There is nothing more humiliating for someone like Griswold than becoming a mindless zombie, wich is way more humiliating than what happened to every Diablo adversary wich was either death or becoming a soldier.

This is just a theory, but what if Griswold was just stubborn, and not so eager to submit to evil similar to the dwarves in Tolkien's fantasy? Tolkien states that the 7 rings of power given to the dwarves did not enslave them, unlike the other rings of power given to the other races. This was because the dwarves, by their very nature, were stubborn, resistant, and highly uncompliant. That being said, Griswold and the dwarves share many attributes and characteristics such as: both are Scottish, both are burly and stout, both have similar mannerisms, etc. Personally for me, it would make sense if this was the reason why Griswold was not tempted by Andariel. However, this begs the question of how did Griswold become his cursed form if he was so stubborn and resistant? Well, going back into Tolkien's fantasy, the dwarves were not completely unscathed by the rings, as they became more greedy, more isolated, and eventually went insane. Likewise, though Griswold's defense of his purity was completely impenetrable, he was not completely invincible to the curses that the evil ones would plague him with. More than likely, he probably fell in battle and then was resurrected as a tool to carry out Diablo's will. Overall, I think that Griswold was a humble and simple yet stubborn man, who cared only for the ones he loved as well as his craft. Oh! And he was above all *NOT GAY*!

Griswold struck me as a man who was pious. It was probably a similar situation to Leoric. He certainly talked about the Light more than most in Tristram, and it makes sense if he had no interest in women from a religious perspective.
Doesn't mean he was a homosexual.

I am a Diablo gamer since D1. You got my sub for this interesting video. Although i will not be getting D2 Resurrections as i am satisfied with my original copy of D2X (Diablo 2 Expansion). I had it since it came out and it still works good. My earliest memory of Diablo games was Diablo 1 on PC back in 1998 when i was in the 3rd or 4th grade. I saw my friend from school playing it and he was playing as the Sorceror and i had no idea what game he was playing but it did fascinate me. I didnt figure what this mystery game was until i was a bit older. Diablo 1 and Darkstone will always be legends in the gaming community that will forever be remembered and today's games still dont quite top them...regardless who wants to argue with me on this statement.

He may have been gay, however like you said, the period wasn't really receptive so I doubt it, for that reason and another, the male PC's aren't effected by Andariel and neither was Deckard Cain or Pepin. It's also possible that Pepin was Griswolds secret lover and Deckard was suffering from performance issues but I guess we'll never know.

In WildTangent Game's own dungeon crawler called "Fate" (aka diablo's little nephew), the potion merchant (although sometimes he is even reused as other NPCs) has one piece of dialogue that's an easter egg to Griswold I think.
"What can I do for ya?" is that piece, but also they have somewhat similar accents and physical build.

I disagree with this. I don't see this as canon.
In Diablo 2 it was stated that Diablo himself/ The Dark Wanderer, summoned Andariel to guard the way east.
That would mean that there was no way for Griswold to have been transformed by Andariel. Andariel was summoned after the wanderer left tristram and her instructions from Diablo was to prevent anyone from following him.
(Side note: He still was followed by Marius, but it worked out for ol' terror boy.)
There are other cut quests from Diablo 1 that the Belzebub mod turned back on, that also put key figures in places they shouldn't be.
If this was the original intention of the quest before diablo 2, I'm pretty sure it was retconned since the quest was officially cut from Diablo 1.
No sir, I think it's much more simple than that. I think that Griswold simply got eaten by zombies and because of the Diablo's power just recently awakened in his town, He didn't stay dead.
I think the one thing you got right though is that Griswold has a strong will.
I believe the dark power of terror that lingered in town after Diablo left, transformed Griswold after He'd been killed by zombies, because of his strong will that would not be extinguished.

I think it should be noted that Griswold as a super unique in Diablo 2 always has the cursed mod affix. Could be the nature of his transformation from human to mere undead, being a type of curse of some kind instead of him just being a reanimated corpse.

I think Andariel might have resurrected Griswold as a taunt by turning the most virtuous man in the town into a flesh eating corpse, perhaps in his zombie form he can still craft weapons? Maybe she prefered to turn him into a demon but he was too virtuous. I also don't think he is gay because i remember Gillian or Ogden mentioning that he has a wife that died and that it was a hard hit for him, maybe he loved her a lot, maybe after that he was unable to feel in love again or paying attention to Andariel's shinny lights.
However i would like your theory to be true, i think it would be very funny having Andariel feeling like that over Griswold

  • @Nabooru
    @Nabooru 3 года назад +3

Somehow, I thought you were going to infer that Gillian is actually Andariel (or a servant) in disguise. Imagine if that's why Adria entrusted her. Imagine if that's why she was communing with the dead when Leah encountered her madness as the return of Azmodan and Belial was eminent.

And she was pissed off and punished him.

I doubt this is the reason why only griswold got raised as an undead. Iirc lore and story correctly griswold was the only one left in the village who could put up a fight against andariel. He fought in the catacombs with farnham and the others and with farnham being an insane drunk, griswold was probably the only one fighting back andariel. She may have raised him, because he gave her trouble or, because he was just a worthy guard to leave behind and also mock/demoralize cain.
But not everything has to make perfect sense tbh, because cain being the only survivor is the biggest plot hole of tristram. After diablo got control of Aidan it should have been his highest priority to kill cain. And even after he sent andariel it should have been her highest priority to kill cain, because it makes no sense to kill everyone except for that one guy, who knows everything about u, assisted in your downfall before, knows how to stop you and made it his job and yet you decide to keep him alive.

  • @ElMofo9

Hmm, maybe just maybe griswold wasnt tempted because he was an important NPC you cant kill off the blacksmith gotta have someone to repair your equipment, in D2 he wasn't needed to be a blacksmith so turn him into a monster for the players to kill, just to keep some form of congruency marking cain as the only survivor.

Maybe it was some fan fiction I read like 20 years ago I don't remember at this point. I do like the idea though that Griswold is basically the progenitor of the "Begone, thot!" meme.

Go to tristram kill everything and add the tower from D1 and then you are can go through everything there (clear the tower until hell opens etc) and ends on UBER diablo from Diablo 1 - would be a great (but expensive) change where I doubt anyone regardless of old or new communtiy would complain about

Dude, 100% figured the same thing wayyyyy back when after hearing how he describes the black mushroom - for those of you that forgot, I’d recommend going back and checking his dialogue there, because it does kind of come off as a bit... enthusiastic? Now, it certainly could be more of a wink and a nod from the developers playing it for laughs back then, but after eventually playing the Belzebub mod a couple years back and seeing this same cut dialogue from Griswold regarding the Andariel quest, it really doesn’t seem all that far-fetched. And while I could really not care less about Gris’ sexuality, maybe there could be a story connection for this beyond just players’ closer connection to the guy who outfitted us in D1. In any case, I don’t think Griswold actually being intended as gay is as unlikely as some people are adamantly saying.

My head cannon is Griwald probably did encounter Andarial and he layed the steel down so hard it messed up her whole power dynamic and she developed some borderline resentment. She wanted to punish him but kept him around in some capacity just in case.
