  • What is the Hidden Truth behind the Townsfolk of Tristram being UNABLE to escape the town, without being slaughtered, in Diablo 1?
Why, if the people of Tristram COULD have easily been slaughtered, at any given moment, as seen in Diablo 2 were they allowed to live?
And perhaps more importantly, why did the Residents of tristram, choose to stay in the cursed town & risk torture & damnation, at the hands of the Lord of Terror’s himself?

I have played other games that had a similar sense of foreboding, but this game is certainly up there with the best of them.
One that comes to my mind is Risen. It managed to keep me very immersed in the first 2 acts by having a very non-linear difficulty distribution and realistic lighting system.
If there was no light, then you listerally couldn't see anything, meaning you had to carry torches at night and in dungeons, and there were enemies that could one-shot you around every corner. My most fond memory in that regard is when I was ambushed by a pack of wolves at night, dropped my torch to draw my shield and then had to fight in the circle of light that the torch cast.
But probably the game that scared my the most was Amnesia. It gave me an actual panic attack.
PS: But you could actually give Diablo 1 the top spot, because the other games I mentioned were much newer and had way more knowledge and better creation tools to draw from.
Diablo 1 basically made a truly immersive game with almost nothing compared to today.

Nah, people always assume that the forces of hell are on on the same side. But they aren't. None of the demon lords trust each-other. And they really REALLY don't want Diablo back out and in charge potentially to take away their own fiefdom. Most likely, they knew Diablo was there, and they were hoping everyone dies there and no one lets the lord of terror escape. Like any disease, you just quarantine the town, and wait it out. They either succeed and get rid of their problem, or they all die. Either way no more problem.

    • @benfarrar741
      @benfarrar741 3 года назад +24

@@Juan-Dering You are right about the Lords of Hell being pitted against each other. There are constantly-shifting alliances and betrayals. Specifically, Hell's political situation at the time was like this:
The Prime Evils (Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal) were concentrating their efforts heavily on the world of Sanctuary, and not paying as much attention to fighting the forces of Heaven. So the Lesser Evils organized a civil war in Hell, resulting in the defeat of the Prime Evils and their ultimate exile to Sanctuary. Once there, the Archangel Tyrael formed the Horadrim to hunt down their spirits and imprison each of them in soulstones. They succeeded in doing this.
But all of it was part of Mephisto's evil plan. All of it. He and the other Prime Evils meant to lose the civil war. They planned on getting imprisoned in Soulstones. In the next stage of the plan, Mephisto used his malevolent influence to corrupt the priesthood that was guarding him. One priest in particular, Lazarus, was singled out by Mephisto for a special task. Mephisto inspired Lazarus to travel West to the kingdom of Khanduras, as a missionary. Once there, he secured a position as a trusted advisor to King Leoric. He then convinced Leoric to move the seat of his Kingdom to Tristram. And when Leoric got to Tristram, Diablo was able to get inside his mind and use him to do all manner of evil things. But Diablo was not quite able to use Leoric as a vessel. So Lazarus prepared the young prince to be possessed, instead. Diablo's intention was to possess the prince, free his brothers, then attack Mount Arreat and take control of the Worldstone.
So at that point in time, Hell was divided into four parts, each of which was ruled by one of the four lesser evils. They were all quite content to let the Prime evils stay in exile, and fight the forces of Heaven on their own. Meanwhile, on Sanctuary, the Prime Evils had formed an alliance among themselves. If the Prime Evils' plan had worked, they would have assaulted Mount Arreat, corrupted the Worldstone and turned all humanity evil. Then, with the combined might of Hell and corrupted humanity, they would have finally obtained victory over Heaven.
Good thing we were there to shut 'em down!

"We have all heard the tales associated with Tristram. The very mention of its name brings to mind images of undead monstrosities, demonic possession, monarchy driven to lunacy, and, of course, the greatest legend of all: the Lord of Terror unleashed. Although many now claim that a peculiar mold upon the bread or perhaps a fouling of the water drove the populace mad with visions, I have seen too much in my varied travels to dismiss such stories out of hand."

A few things worth mentioning. First, it's kind of ironic that the image of dark riders gives off a ringwraith impression. Yet, look at any Diablo angel and they give off MORE of a ringwraith vibe, minus the evil. Also, the idea that it was all manipulation, also makes sense. If many rumors are true, the Prime Evils are MASTERS at manipulation. One theory says they manipulated the Lessers into overthrowing them and exiling them to Sanctuary, so they can cause havoc there. Maybe they manipulated the Horadrim into sealing them away, to come back when Sanctuary was most vulnerable. They likely manipulated so many events, that they may have Illuminati-esque control over Sanctuary, plans within plans, backup plans for backup plans, all that kind of thing. So, keep a few townsfolk, so that adventurers come to attempt to slay him, have a place to repair equipment/stock up/eat/sleep, (Let's face it, the latter 2 likely happened, even if they didn't happen in-game), makes sense.

I might be the only person in the entire world who wants this, but I wanted Diablo 4 to be a prequel to Diablo 1, taking place mere weeks or months before the events of D1. You start off in a remote village, tracking a mysterious cult that seems to get bigger and stronger with each new village (act) you come to. Act 4 would end with you leaving the last village, headed to Tristram. The expansion for the game would be a complete remake of D1...you finally make it to Tristram where you must confront the cult leaders and Diablo himself.
THIS is the Diablo sequel (prequel) I want...Unfortunately, Blizzard has no interest in looking back at where the series started.

I'm sorry who are you and why aren't you leading Blizzard or at least the Diablo storyboard team right now?! The game you describe would be an instant buy for me. Honestly, I don't understand why Blizzard isn't re-releasing Diablo for consoles/PC right now while we wait for Diablo II: Resurrection...I'd buy it. They don't even have to update it and could just port the original as is. Maybe for a cool 20 bucks on XBLA/PSN/Steam.
Your idea would fit so well with Resurrection and what's more the new engine is finished. It really shouldn't take much more than what they've already done to make it happen. They could release Duablo II: Resurrection as planned, release Diablo IV as a prequel (your excellent suggestion), and lead us back to the first game where it all started. I personally would love to watch the fall of Tristram and in that new 3d engine, Hell yes! Unfortunately, that makes too much sense and as we all know that simply won't do at Blizzard Land. ;)

The last cinematic, where the hero smashes the soulstone in his forehead, was actually created without the approval of the game design team. They did it because that way it would "close the loop" and allow a new hero would arrive to kill diablo again.
They only kept this cinematic because there wasn't enough time to create a new one.
If you only look at Diablo 1, there is very little lore. The lore we know today was created for the sequels.
But it's funny how the cinematic mistake actually shaped the story of Diablo 2

It's interesting how the lore evolved since the first game. The way they tied it together in the later games was the warrior's relationship with King Leoric and Prince Albrecht. I don't recall if there was any subtle hints that was revealed in the dialogue or not back then since I haven't played it in a while, but it Blizzard did a great job teeing everything together by the third game. Plus, the second game revealed what happened to the Sorcerer and the Rogue. Which made a lot of sense.
I always enjoyed this game series a great deal. The way it was told and the evolution of the Diablo Lore really drew me in as both a gamer and a fan of the series. I do wish that Blizzard would revisit the first game and give it a nice make over like Diablo 2 did this year. Maybe update some of Diablo 2's game codes for improvements.

You know I always had a theory about Tristram in the original Diablo. In the Intro you find a desolate town that's been ransacked, littered with corpses. I think that that's actually Tristram, and the more pristine version you use as your base hub is actually a trauma laden hallucination, meant as a coping mechanism.
In fact, in Diablo 2, when you go back to save Cain and you see the town is destroyed and the townsfolk are either dead or undead, I think that's the way it's been since just before Aiden's arrival. Plus Aiden would've known what Tristram was like before the chaos, so he would be capable of hallucinating the town in its pre-corrupted state.
Having the cathedral entrance that close to town with all the demons pouring out of it, it never seemed possible for a half dozen unarmed townsfolk to stave off attacks before your arrival.

It´s interesting how many quests were cut from the game and some content of them even used in the Diablo 2. Like Andariel, Pandemonium and the Izual imprisoned in the demon, these things were already supposed to be in Diablo 1. I think that there is a website, Diablo evolution, which describes it.
I think that they cut the quests probably due the reason that originally they didn´t plan to add much multiplayer content to the game aside of randomly generated PVP arenas, but as Blizzard then forced them to add more multiplayer stuff and the Battle.net support, they had to spend the rest months of the development on the multiplayer instead on the single player. That would explain why the majority of the quests aren´t in the multiplayer or are cut down just to a boss on a level, which had their separate levels. And also it would explain these cut quests from the single player.
The only quest they told that they chose to cut due design reasons was the Map of the stars one, due it would force player to play a certain game style, which they didn´t want to do.

There is a secondary little thing brought up in the Diablo 1 manual, which also discusses the sudden appearance of the cloaked riders, as well as the fallen kidnappings:
"As the stories of demons and devils spread, a stifling, primal terror began to consume the hearts of all the town's inhabitants. it was a Terror that none of them had ever known...
Deep beneath the ruined monastery, Diablo gorged himself upon the fears of the mortals above him. He slowly sank back into the welcoming shadows and began to harness his depleted power.
He smiled to himself in the sheltering darkness, for he knew that the time of his final victory was fast approaching..."
-while this doesn't contradict the theory you've proposed in the slightest, it adds another layer: Diablo was not at his full strength when he first woke up, appearing with his power 'depleted.'. Consuming the fear of the town's inhabitants above allowed him to regain his old strength and power and thus made them a very useful tool for regaining his lost abilities. The victory he speaks of could be taking over the young warrior, and in current diablo canon that would certainly be the most fitting theory for his hour being fast approaching, or it could be a wry reference to the 'map of the stars' quest, which means that he could have been originally waiting for the stars to align, though this is obviously impossible in current canon due to the quest being dummied out.

Gee, why would the Lord of Terror, setup a situation that seems designed to cause as much terror as possible? Its a mystery to me. Seriously, that may be the simple answer. He had much of the town killed, to inspire the dread and terror in the survivors. if they remained a fully populated town, they would have felt safe there. Either because the town wasnt touched, or because there are enough people to draw strength from numbers. By leaving a select few and keeping them too scared to leave, while randomly unleashing some new torment on them, he keeps the terror flowing. At the same time, you may also be right, he wanted word to get out to lure a strong host to him. By letting some escape he let word spread, by keeping the survivors in terror, he kept himself entertained.

The story in Diablo 1 is so much better than the sequels because it's so vague. They don't try to explain everything and leave it to your imagination to fill in the gaps which is what creates the mystery/horror.
The later games have answered a lot of the mystery created during Diablo 1 by fleshing the story out too much. Same thing happened with the Warcraft/Starcraft lore.

Such a classic game. One of the aspects of the incredible atmosphere is that Tristram is in perpetual twilight during the course of the game. As if there is someone watching out for the townsfolk who would all be quickly overrun by demons if it turned to night.

To me it is obvious who the Dark Riders were: they were the Wild Hunt contacted by Diablo himself to do a cross-over event in his preparation for his return.
Diablo made a deal with them offering them great power if they raid and destroy most of the villages of the kingdom, but leave the town of Tristram intact. He needed this small village intact to formulate his elaborate trap.

Great video, I had no idea who tremain was, so thanks for the introduction. As I was watching the video and seeing how deep his quest actually went, I was wondering why it got cut from the game. It became quite evident by the end haha, having that happen to a priest in a videogame back then was unthinkable.
There were rumors that after d2’s widespread popularity and when blizzard north were working on diablo 3, the Vatican asked blizzard south to remove any real-life religious references from the game, you know, like crosses and pentagrams, which then became one of the breaking points for blizzard north, who felt those were essential. I never knew if these rumors held any truth, but the fact is d3 did cut all those references, which resulted in a different atmosphere. Different is not inherently bad of course, but d3 world didn’t feel like sanctuary at all.
Ah well, can’t wait for d2r to experience that diablo goodness all over again!
