Husband's Favourite Classic Keema Matar Recipe | Mince and Pea Curry

- Keema matar (English: "pea and minced meat"),[1] also rendered Qeema matar, is a dish from the Indian subcontinent associated with the Mughals. The term is derived from Chaghatai Turkic 'قیمه' (minced meat).
Keema, is a staple curry in many Pakistani households. This particular version, Classic Keema Matar (mince with peas) is one of two favourites in my own house, the other being Aloo Keema (mince with potatoes). Both curries can be made following this recipe, simply replace the peas with potatoes.

This was the first curry I ever ate and 25 yrs later its still my favorite. My mum was rushed to hospital and our neighbor took me in and looked after me for a couple of days. I was really upset, but on the first night we had this with chapatis and although I wasn't used to the spice, it was the tastiest thing I had ever eaten; such a bad and good memory at the same time. Thanks for the recipe x
Hi Edward, bless atleast you'll never forget your first curry experience 😊👍
It's such a wonderful dish.
My neighbour taught me how to make chapaties and she used to give us a lot of what she cooked, all gorgeous.
Digestion differs 😢
That's so sweet 🧸
I'm not an overly emotional person but this comment genuinely made me tear up - a child being taken in by neighbours - the sharing of resources such as time, shelter, food and love - the whole village to raise a child idea - just perfect. My mum was in hospital for 3 months in 1977 over the summer when I transitioned from primary to secondary. My dad worked long hours, the neighbours tutted that I was running feral, but not one of them fed me anything more substantial than an ice lolly.
I'm assuming you're in the UK Edward, but maybe not, but I feel here we lost much of our community spirit post-war, and our vibrant migrant populations have so much to teach us to rekindle it.
Great video says the "old white guy” - that’s me. My first ever experience of Pakistani food was at a work mates house 40yrs ago when I gifted him some exercise equipment, his mum fed me keema matar - I will never forget the amazing taste. She too apologised for speaking Punjabi, which made me feel awkward because I never thought it odd that I spoke English - it’s my language and you should never feel the need for saying sorry for speaking yours. Ever since I have been trying home recipes like yours to bring back that memory.
I will be cooking this tonight😂
Thank you for sharing this with, I loved reading about your first ever experience of trying Pakistani food 😊👍
Mashallah بہت اچھی ریسیپی ھے آپ کا بہت شکریہ
My favorite dish has always been keema mattur, especially the way my mum made it. She passed away a few years ago, and I’ve missed having it because no one could ever make it as perfectly as she did. But I made it myself for the first time last week using this video, and Alhamdulillah, it the closest I’ve had to how my mum made it. Thank you.
Tried this tonight with minced chicken and it was delicious. Your recipes are easy to follow and all the spices blend together perfectly. I’ll be trying lots more thanks 🙏🏻
Thanks Carolyn, glad you enjoyed it. 😊👍

We used to go to a pub in Ashton Under Lyne in the early 80s, we got the last bus home to where we lived, but not before calling at Ali's, it was a tiny, tiny place and he only sold Keema in Pitta, it was 50p for a 1/2 one and a pound for a full one, due to him I never stop cooking this it's lovely, I always wonder what ever happened to Ali
Some nostalgic memories there... 👌
Ok this just looks amazing and I think I have everything I need to make this. Also love your video production.
Thanks

I grew up in south Asia. This was a staple. Your recipe is a nice upgrade. I live in iowa now and my friends are always impressed with my south Asian food. I love keema but I am going to try it exactly like you made. It was always a staple in the house. Thank you for the video.
I've just made this curry and followed the steps and it has turned out to be the best keema curry i've tasted !!.. its a classic dish with lots of flavour ... just remember to follow the instructions to the letter and you cant go wrong .. especially cooking off the excess water which seals all the flavour ..10 out of 10
Glad you liked it. Thank you
Yea I didn't pun off all the water makes a massive difference
Looks great! Think i'll give it a try next week hopefully :)

I found you about two weeks ago. I am so glad I did. I love curry but am not so good at being consistent with the flavouring. I made this today...... it is beautiful and I now know what you mean by the 'level of flavours'! Thank you and get a cookbook happening, I will be first in line to buy for me and anyone else I can think of!

Today is Mother’s Day 2023 my first without my mum .. she passed away end of last year suddenly with pulmonary Fibrosis I decided in memory of her to find a kheema recipe thank you your bubbly character really cheered me up and I’m now making it and it’s turned out delicious and I’m having it with Rice but I used Turkey instead just for health reasons just wanted to share that with you 😔🙏🏼💜
Brilliant vid. With stage 2 how much water do you need to add? Do you cover the meat then allow it to almost dry out?
Been a while since I made this I'll follow your recipe next time as it looks really delicious Shamza.
Wonderful Royal Nag, I hope you like it!
I warmed to this video instantly 🙂 I’ll be trying this one 💯%. Is there much difference between black and green cardamom?
I would like to express my heartfelt thanks for sharing your cooking dishes and ideas. You've simplified Pakistani cooking and all your meals look mouthwatering 😋.
Thanks a lot 😊👍
Amazing. I used it to stuff cabbage leaves and slow roast in the oven 👍🏼👍🏼
Nice and healthy!
Where’s the pan from please? Love it 😍
Very nice 👌
Made this tonight and it was absolutely fantastic, highly recomended, and eating it with chapatti is the only way for me. I added a teaspoon of cumin to the spice mix and a piece of casia bark. Also i used good quality italian tinned tomatoes and a sploge of tomato purae.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Gonna try your recipe for Keema curry, not had this for many many years.
Really tasty. Lucky indeed to have found this cooking channel. 👌👌
Thank you so much 🙂
Thanks for the recipe, my keema matar turned out great, I usually take inspiration from an online recipe and than add my own mix which is what I did today. I like mine more Punjabi home style meaning no garam masala, cardamom, bay leaf but heavy on the ginger, garlic, spice, tumeric, cilantro. Thanks for the inspiration, 5 out of 5!
perfect 👏
Made this last night for meal prep, absolutely delicious. Thanks very much, how long does it last in the fridge with rice?

@My Little Kitchen It turned out delish!!! This keema Matar is now my goto recipe thank you for sharing!!!!
made this a few times but trying your method as we speak, house smells good, i love cooking indian food, ive even got a tandor oven lol, thanks for sharing " update" the miss loved it
Thank you so much 🙏
Excellent and clear recipe! Can't wait to try.
If I use chicken mince does it still need the 'bhunning' stage? Don't want to dry it out! 😅
Tony, yes. Bhunning is a crucial step of any cook especially meats. Just try it and see the flavour develop further.
Love watching your recipes and presentation of them. Can you put base gravy into all curries even if it is'nt in the recipe? Also which kind of pan is the best to use? Thank you. 🤔
Linda, I wouldn't recommend it as it just wouldn't be the same. You're making a lazy curry in my opinion if you're adding base gravy in! 🤣😫
I'll check what brand my pan is and get back to you! 👍
Yummy And I like your style Of smile 😂
Hi shamza. I love your recipes and have been following you and trying to make dishes. I just wanted to ask how comes you don't put zeera powder in your cooking especially the mear dishes? Does zeera give a different taste? Thank you 😊
Hi Rukshana, thank you so much for your kind words. I don't add zeera powder as the garam masala that I add is heavily cumin based so thats the reason.
Hi thanks for sharing this recipe- I can see you have an electric cooker, are you still able to make pilau? Because I can’t make pilau on it. Doesn’t come out well. Thanks I’m advance. X
Hi, I've got a ceramic hob which is similar an electric one and yes I make pilau rice on it! I've 3 videos for pilau rice that I've made on my hob, 2 of which I put in the oven to further cook but the Chicken Yakhni Pilau was made on the hob fully. I'll link them below so you can take a look 😊
