A lot of people claim to be a major fan after he passed, in my book as long as you admired his work, you were and still are a fan. Keep his memory alive by enjoying the amazing songs he made that we could all resinate with.
I think I know what you're getting at. The Hearbreakers were there writing and performing new music for 40 yrs while attention seekers (just my opinion|) like the Stones took the same material on the road time after time. What I love about this song is that it a rare, intentional ballad for someone he loved and he was incapable of writing romantic cliches. "when she hung around too long I took her for granted/when she was away I thought she was an angel" Who writes lyrics like this anymore? Or ever? Still think he left us too soon and would rejoice to see him back with his Dana on his arm. Tx for great comment.
First time ever listening to this song. It evokes a very specific setting for me. A small local bar sometime in the 1980s, somewhere east of the Mississippi. The smell of smoke and beer fill the room as working class men play pool a little before midnight, bright blue nyon lights on the windows. It's a smooth feel good song for sure, Tom Petty has his own special brand of those. R.I.P. thou wonderful musician.
Great comment! I didn't realize how unusual my parents were; my Dad worked long hours but he had an office in the basement and the two of them loved to cook together and danced around in the kitchen; childhood memories that are irreplaceable. Best wishes to you both!
I just found that out. ......I was Reading..The Bangles From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia -- - In 1988, while recording his album Full Moon Fever, Tom Petty and his lead guitarist Mike Campbell called on the group to provide backing vocals for the song "Waiting for Tonight". The song never made it to the album, but instead made the compilations Playback (1995) and Anthology: Through the Years (2000).
i have searched for this for so long and at the time i couls not find it and i jnew who sang it and i knew who was in the background singing cked on youtube under both groups and NOTHING for years and just finding it now.!!!! THANKS to who ever posted this
lots of people think rock lyricists write autobiographically all the time, which couldn't be further from the truth, including the late profoundly missed Tom Petty; but here is an autobiographical song about his wife Dana, scorchingly honest and profoundly moving, RIP friend to us all.
Glorious song. Are The Bangles playing all the instruments? I love the bass and the sweet backing vocals. Tom's voice is a unique pleasure, and this song just flows so smoothly. He's a master.
No, but I'm sure their bass player could have nailed this song easily. She was the most talented musician in the band, and the only one who wasn't replaced by studio musicians on their albums.
I went walking down the Boulevard Past the skateboards and the beggars I was out looking in the windows Just out walking, letting my mind roam If she hung around too much I might take her for granted But when I was away, she seemed an angel The only one who really cared about me The only one without an angle For so long I've been lonely Now I'm too weak to fight I've been waiting for tonight I've been waiting for tonight (Good night my love, sleep tight my love) Yes and I had a little time to kill As I crossed the parking lot And I was feeling lucky to have a place to go Yeah my nerves were feeling shot For so long I've been weary There was no end in sight I've been waiting for tonight I've been waiting for tonight (Good night my love, sleep tight my love) Oh I've been waiting 'round For a night like this Yeah I felt it coming down Since her first kiss (Good night my love) Yeah and I'm wrestling with my overcoat Yeah I'm fighting with my thoughts I'm gonna trust my intuition I'm gonna hope I don't get lost For some time I've been lonely I've been too weak to fight I've been waiting for tonight I've been waiting for tonight (Good night my love, sleep tight my love)
This was recorded at the end of the "Full Moon Fever" sessions. The Heartbreakers did not play on this song. It's just Tom, (my favorite guitarist Mike Campbell) and special guests The Bangles. The background harmonies on this song by The Bangles are spectacular! Really special. I could listen to this song every day and never get tired of it. Tom says this could have been one of his biggest hits if they had released a video for the song!
Oh, something to add: There was once a graffiti in the Underwood Bar that said: I love the Hutfless sisters. No joke. It was in the Dude’s bathroom. It was scrawled. “I love The Hutfless sisters.” Not by me, though, quite honestly, I thought it was pretty cool.
I love Tom Petty and have done for over 30 yrs. Interesting to hear his influence on Killer's song runaways. Sounds as if it could have been written by Tom himself.
Thinking of time frame and bio etc. I think this was a Dana song. Not my business but he was happy after they got together, 17 yrs or more. "yeah I'm wrestling with my overcoat, fighting with my thoughts" a genius.
I always see this "underrated" thing. I don't really know what it means. ??????? -not in my book. Thousands and thousands of others rate him at the top of the world, along with me and seems like 8ballboy8 also. AND he is not coming down.
@@djdavemick I am not American, but I noticed that JLo in WFT had gone full Lara Croft, and The Bangles' women were just proto it girls who are grouped with Lara Croft, Jill Valentine, Julia Chang (Jaycee), and Helena Douglas...
Another one, of the many...countless...brilliant TP songs that easily could/should have been a hit single. God damn I miss this man.
I listened to this on repeat the night before my mom passed.Something about the melody, backing vocals, and story telling. I'm forever haunted.
It made me think of my daughter who I just....lost
this band could write and play so easily. like they were in a dream...
TP borrowed a bit fro Dylans Hurricane on this number.

Tom Petty, the best rock and roller to ever live
This should have been released as a single - as has been observed my many other listeners.

My absolute favorite song from Tom. God its so damn GOOD!
Love this song R.I.P TOM. We miss you
Love this song.... it should have been a hit...
This song and face in the crowd are completely unappreciated and not played, which is fine with me. Ironically my 2 favorites of his.
I heard this song on the radio A LOT when I was a kid growing up in the Chicago Area in the 1990's.
@@kateduvall3297 this was very popular here in Canada
Dig the bangles on background vocals...
I first heard this on the Anthology:Through the Years album. Great example of a non-album track that is a fantastic thing unto itself.
It really is.
The one; the only, Tom Petty!
I grew up listening to you, Sir. See you on the other side!
Wonderful 1996 classic!

That's where I found it! Tx. I also read that it got re-recorded in 1992; must check sources.
Superb song, somehow captures the promice of the night and a cracking tune init. ..brilliant.

Just out walking, letting my mind roam
If she hung around too much I might take her for granted
But when I was away, she seemed an angel
The only one who really cared about me
The only one without an angle
For so long I've been lonely
Now I'm too weak to fight
I've been waiting for tonight
I've been waiting for tonight
(Good night my love, sleep tight my love)
Yes and I had a little time to kill
As I crossed the parking lot
And I was feeling lucky to have a place to go
Yeah my nerves were feeling shot
For so long I've been weary
There was no end in sight
I've been waiting for tonight
I've been waiting for tonight
(Good night my love, sleep tight my love)
Oh I've been waiting 'round
For a night like this
Yeah I felt it coming down
Since her first kiss
(Good night my love)
Yeah and I'm wrestling with my overcoat
Yeah I'm fighting with my thoughts
I'm gonna trust my intuition
I'm gonna hope I don't get lost
For some time I've been lonely
I've been too weak to fight
I've been waiting for tonight
I've been waiting for tonight
(Good night my love, sleep tight my love)

Also Jeff Lyne from ELO
Pity The Bangles broke up so soon after this song was recorded. Maybe it could've happened if they'd stayed together.
@@Notinserviceij No Jeff on this track. He had returned to England when they recorded this.

I forgot that The Bangles sang background on this song. Been a long time since I read the booklet that came with the "Playback" box set
great song way to go Tom Petty

His most underrated song
And that's the Bangles singing background vocals!
is there any live version of this song?? is just amazing!! good night my love, sleep tight my love....wherever you are.....
Considering the Bangles broke up pretty much right after recording this song, I'd say no. He couldn't do this song live without them in my opinion.
AGREE WITH YOU their backin vocals make all of it
👍 song!!!!! And one of the best
LOVE!

Waiting for tonight......our cherished time together.....you are my Angel and I am your Angel...let's have some celestial loving my sweet man

I type in simply "waiting for tonight" in the search. Guess what? Not one mention of Petty. Hmmm.....
I disagree, since "A Face in.." are one of my absolute favourites :)
#MUSIC
@djdavemick That's a shame. If it's the Jennifer Lopez version, well that blows.
J.LO is an entertainer, Tom Petty is a musician.
All I needed was to sign a piece of paper!😫😩😖😨😰😱
I also got a song called "Waiting for Tonight", check it out and let me know what you think xoxo ruclips.net/video/xfWO4k-dJ0A/видео.html
