This is why Tom Petty is a legend. His new music is as good or better than the old stuff. You can follow the journey of his life from kid to adult. That's rare.
Gives me chills how this song depicts exactly what I’ve been going through these past, nearly 5, years. Been a long journey and the light is finally visible, not too far off now…😢
The lyrics on this song have made me weep in the past. So deep. We can spend our lives running after this and that, not realising that the important things are always inside and in our closest relationships. The rest is just decoration.
"It took a world of troubles, it took a world of tears It took a long time to get back here." In 21 words, Tom took us around the world and back, and we're all the wiser because of it. I miss you, man. Thank you for being my friend, for being our friend and sharing your heart and your music with us. Much love to you.
I have those exact words tattooed on my back left shoulder. They got me through a bad accident and lots of surgeries and physical therapy. I feel grateful every day for this song.
@@maryellenthompson5392 It is an extraordinary song and one that, as is the case with MANY of Tom's songs, one that has a universal quality to it in that it's one we all can relate to because we've all had difficulties in all sorts of shapes and forms, some more extreme than others, where we've in essence done the same thing - gone through a tremendous difficulty only to come full circle, and come to a place of acceptance, understanding and a strength that was greater than before. I'm grateful Tom's song helped you to get through what must have been a horrific and harrowing experience. But here you are - alive and well, if even only relatively well, but alive nonetheless. And kicking. I put together a Spotify playlist of Tom's songs and I would be honored by your adding it to your Spotify library. It's quite long but then Tom wrote a helluva lot of good and great songs, so it's no wonder it's as long as it is. If you do a search of my username on Spotify, you'll find that I have a four volume version of this exact playlist, each about 50 songs long, along with playlists and mixtape playlists of all sorts of artists I think you'll enjoy. Take care and be well, Mary. open.spotify.com/playlist/5VwCqTxlyG1dwnOTQagg5v?si=b1cfb394641c43e1
This was my grandpa's favorite song and singer. They played this at his funeral. I cried so hard it was snowing open casket... He was so cold, that's when I realised he was actually gone, that he would never pretend that me and my sisters were.invisible and number into us with his chair or that we were little bunnies and poke us and oinch out cheek. I know you're watching over us Pop, I love you and I know that wherever you are you are in a better place and that the pain is gone. Rest in peace Pop
Nothing can be better then being on square one and have your slate clear. This is where we all need to be. Great song, starting fresh, no looking back. No more trouble no more tears. Love this song.
I'm in N/A, have been for 20+ years and I really like one meeting. They follow the 12 step canon but otherwise they're just wonderful hilarious people who know better than most how fragile life is and how important it is to maintain clarity. On Tom Petty's birthday, at the end of the meeting, someone starting singing Square One (the PERFECT song for this or anything else) and everyone knew the words, sang along, and that's how the meeting ended. Then there was a moment of silence in his memory. Still get shivers when I think of that evening.
heh you, this is my favorite meeting. All 12 step programs work roughly the same way but I've been going to this one for a very long time even though it's N/A and I was a drunk for about 5 years. But these guys really know the meaning of life and death and it's not unusual for someone to do something like that. It's a recovery song; almost an anthem if it weren't so private. My sponsor's French Canadian, heroin, sober 30 years, of all things in the police force and does graphic art on the side. We should continue this ........ e-mail me before Thurs evening. xox Evie
That was a beautiful statement. Tom Petty is my absolute favorite musician of all time, and genre hands down!!! I am a music lover and listen to many different kinds of music. Tom Petty was such and extremely talented musician and a Genius lyricist. Ones like him are rare bc he actually cared about his fans. "When we're happy we enjoy the music, but when we're sad we understand the lyrics." RIP Tom you are truly missed.
I love this song! its on my Myspace! lolol I found it on E-Town you know w/ Orlando and Kirsten? LOL I also have an E-town layout! hahaha oh right back on track LOVED THE VID LOL
This became my ritual song when I was fixing my house to make it a future home lol* Square one* rest your head on me my dear... it to a long time to get back here... Thank you Tom this song has helped me allot.
San Dan don’t let the knockers put you off track. The world is full of sad people who gain some sort of macabre thrill out of destroying beauty. Play that beautiful tune again. That’ clear your mind. Peace and love. Thanks Tom.
my dad always used to play this song a while back and the cd broke.. so the other day i randomly startt singing this and i didnt know the title so i typed in the lyrics and what do u know(: i want this song played at my funeral:)
PLEASE live a long life before you get this song played at your funeral. My Dad loved Bob Dylan and Springsteen. Born in 1908; freedom fighter in the former Yugoslavia against the Nazis. Loved that man. He didn't know how to read music but he taught my sister and me how to play gypsy guitar on this beautiful old acoustic. My sis is the real musician in the family so she got his guitars. Passing on the torch. Tx Mr. Petty and Heartbreakers, and Tx for your moving comment, belatedly.
this just reminds me of how bad ac/dc black ice was. these artists just have nothing left to say. (not that ac/dc ever had anything to say, lets be honest)
Uh? Mr Dylan? I think you got that mixed up a bit, this is Mr Petty, he wrote this in like 2005 or 6 I think, if Dylan did this song it wasn't on any of the albums that I'v listened to..
Mr Petty does sound a bit like Dylan when the song warrants it, but I've got it on the box set. I really love this music; I think it's one of the buried treasures. Just moved, will check it out. And no, I agree, impossible for a Dylan cover of a TP&H song, since the Dylan/Tp&H tour was around 1986-7 I think. And Dylan's been doing Bing Crosby et al. on his life-long tour; it's vr unlikely.
This is why Tom Petty is a legend. His new music is as good or better than the old stuff. You can follow the journey of his life from kid to adult. That's rare.
Yeah, that's right 🎩
Nah. Lots of self-revealing songwriter performers, hundreds of em. Just not in 2024.

Just hearing this for the first time. Survived so much and he helped all of us. He gave us his vulnerability. God, I miss that.
Me too honey

I've followed Tom Petty's music my entire life. Probably because he keeps writing my life in his songs. And again, here.
Here's Tom telling his life's story in a few sentences. So glad he got back there before it was too late. So generous of him to confide to us.
Nothing can be better then being on square one and have your slate clear. This is where we all need to be. Great song, starting fresh, no looking back. No more trouble no more tears.
Love this song.
That's right. Das stimmt. 🎩
We just lost Tom tonight. He was a legend. Heartbroken. This is one of my recent favorites of his.
Ryan Bollman I just heard for first time. Still so sad he is gone. But he left so much of himself in these songs.

Tom Petty was a helium balloon in a world of heaviness. And now he flies out of sight into the heavens above.

Someone telling me they don't like Tom Petty is like someone telling me they don't like my dad.
It kills my soul.
