only problem is that those hinges he used are not made for the constant use and angles of pressure that a Murphy bed entails. They wear out quickly and cause undue stress upon the users. That is the reason there is "confusing" hardware involved in creating many murphy beds.
Nice to see a Murphy bed construct that doesn’t require expensive hardware. For the top molding board that flips up and down, it would be useful to use a hinge that snaps open (like a kitchen cabinet hinge) so that the board could stay in a flipped up position until you flip it down, thereby making it easier to fold the bed away.
Watched a ton of videos before starting on my Murphy build. This is BY FAR the best, most informative, well-explained one I've seen. Can't thank you enough!
I've been wanting to do this for a while. Using a twin on its side so I have a low cabinet, and bed for my grandson😍 watching you gives me confidence. Thank you!
This looks great. Well made, good design, good explaining how the trim covers and makes it look professional. I’ve been looking at a few designs. The only thing I question is why didn’t you put a small wooden lip around the edge to help hold the mattress. Everything looks soo good but functionally it’s annoying to have to cable tie the mattress and remake the bed each time. I’ve seen other beds with small wooden lips and small straps over the corners to support the mattress and fitted sheet. I would want to put domes on the wood and duvet to hold them in place. I love the top opening trim on the hinge.
Very well thought out design and final construction. Anyone with building skills could figure this out with your detailed presentation. I’m sure experienced fabricators might bring their own ideas on how to achieve the results they want on certain parts. For example, using 1/4 inch plywood on the front facing of the platform and 1x4 inch internal structure would reduce weight of the mattress platform. Including wood glue along all the joined surfaces will improve strength. The locking pin could be placed at a slightly lower position if it’s too high for the end user. Some type of spring latch could be used instead of the pin to eliminate anyone forgetting to lock it in the upright position.
Enjoyed the video, and also the fact that it's a cheap build. I would have considered adding a board sticking up on the top of the base to prevent the mattress from sliding down when lifted up.
This nice . I will point out though that the mattress needs to be secured to make sure it doesn’t move around when in use. A 1 inch wood must be addd around the bed.
i realize this was uploaded a year ago... since your already in the M12 platform i really recommend the Milwaukee pin nailer... its a great tool and no more hoses!
This is such a beautiful and practical build! I'm so excited to try this myself. For the headboard, am I understanding correctly that you just set it inside the frame when closing up the bed? If I wanted to change the style of the headboard a bit, what sorts of measurements would I have to keep in mind to make sure it stores in the frame with the mattress closed up?
Hi, I really like your work. Two questions if I may: - Where do you store the headboard? Do I understand well that you keep it separately somewhere? - Do you think the hinges and the two legs are enough support for aprx 200kg 440lbs weight (2 people)
Thanks! So the head board fit leaned up against the wall before you fold up the bed. And honestly I think it is really sturdy. I couldn't see this failing but You could always add 2 more hinges if your worried and even a third leg between the other two. But I believe thats over kill. Thanks!
There are several argue screws anchoring the cabinet to the studs in the wall. As for the door, I drilled a hole through the cabinet frame and into the bed frame. That hole is for a metal pin or large bolt that locks it in the upright position. You want that pin to be at the top of the door so that the leverage isn’t working against it. To unlock just pull the pin out and it’s free to move. Thanks! :)
i like the build but for me the paint makes it look like mdf board i prefer stain over paint but thats my preference im going to give it a try thank you for sharing
Quick question why did you not cut out the baseboard trim to allow you to flush mount the unit to the wall really makes the cabinet look like it has always been there could have used chaulking to fill seam on exposed side instead of molding piece not criticism just wondering from an installer point of view. Edit: Nevermind my comment just rewatched the end and you did cut out the baseboard sorry, again looks great and adding your design ideas to a Murphy bed that I need to make before the end of this year
Thanks Simon. Have been thinking out my Murphy Bed design for a couple years - while knocking out the many other honey dos in our retirement/forever home, and it’s turn is coming soon. I like what you’ve done - nice job - and several of your design features not only work for me, but solve some of my problems, so I’ll definitely be incorporating into the one I build. Just wanted to give you props and also let you know you earned a new sub. Keep creating my friend!
It was certainly tilting forwards before you put the screws in (or the walls are uneven). Either way, always best to secure it. If I were to do this, I'd surely use a murphy bed kit with the springs or air pistons.
I think I can do this! Your plan was easier for me to understand and you have great insurrections! I only want to create a desk for the front. Thank you so very much!!!
Excellent video (x2) and project. Well put together. Yes there are a few tweaks that could be made but it looks fantastic and professional. How long did it take you to create? I'm thinking I'll do one sideways with storage cabinets above for pillows etc.
To be honest when I saw the first video I thought this is not gonna come out good but damn you proved me wrong with that finished product . Great job hope when I make mine it looks ass great as yours or some what
Very nice! Most impressive!! I've been thinking along these lines of using door hinges. My room is a bit shorter in hight than yours so I'll build mine horizontally. I like the idea too of putting the legs on the end and having a hinged piece of trim hide them!👍 In reading some of the comments regarding the hinges, if I'm thinking correctly, this would not be a piece of furniture used day in and day out. So the "use" factor would/should be minimal. And as for being "amorous" on it, even well constructed big box store beds break under THOSE conditions!!! ROFLMBO 😂 Keep up the good work and keep those ideas coming! Thank you.
I'm more concerned about the bolts that hinge the legs at the outer end of the bed. I might over-bore the holes and use bushings to run the bolt through. that would increase the weight-bearing surface and shield the wood from being chewed by the bolt threads.
Is this sturdy enough for typical two person night time bed activities? Was thinking about building this but the amount of weight resting on the hinge at the top of the bed makes me a bit nervous.
Loved the videos! Very nice build but, if I understood the headboard construction, would be concerned about using what appeared to be treated lumber in a habitable space. If that were the case, I'd change that material as well as take Logical Comrade's observation into account. All-in-all though I found your build to be exactly what I'm looking to do (altered for my particular aesthetics of the installation) and would be happy to pull of even a somewhat close quality of installation compared to your finished product. Definitely gained a new subscriber from just these two vids!
@@SimonSaysDIY I'm building a queen murphy bed using your guidelines and setup! Thanks! Great work and design! How would you make use of a spring or hydraulic piston? Just finished completion of the mattress platform! That thing is a damn heavy beast to lift during construction! How deep is your standing frame?
Far better and simpler. U have used only ordinary hinges instead of the costly and confusing hardwares used by others. Thanks a ton 👍👍👍
Thanks!! I’m glad my video was helpful! :)

That top board on a hinge is pure genius.
Thanks! :D
I have been looking for this for so long. Nice in expensive, no costly hardware

No hardware required but superman’s strength might be required 😂
@@alexandergalustov1986 well over 100lbs for the bed to come down
@@GUIDE_Nico That 100 lbs depends greatly on the mattress.
@@SimonSaysDIYdo you make these beds for sale if so how much will it cost for that same bed with a queen size mattress?

thanks for the wonderful explainations .. really good

Now that you've had this for a while, have you added springs to help with the heavy load?
I have not. It is a bit much to lift but it isn’t used much. Springs would be a nice upgrade.
