I just watched your video. I like you mentioning your mistakes. That helps people a lot because most DIY people are not carpenters. Also, you have some sense of humor. I like that. I may want to make this bed someday. Thanks for the video.
Great job. Am seriously looking to make something just like this. Your end result looks brilliant. Thank your for honesty showing all those potential pitfalls (mistakes). Am sure I will also find a few ' pitfalls' of my own but feel encouraged enough to have a go. Many Thanks. Ps thanks also to the people asking good questions .
Amazing! Great Job and thank you so much for the video with the details. I am going to start on it this week and very excited. Looking forward to your next project!! May I ask what kind of lumber you would recommend for the trims and the cabinets? What kind of sand paper grit would you recommend? - Thank you
Nice job! The door fronts on the bottom of the bed really make it looked built in. Does not look like a bed in hiding. Next project go for the twin. The Murphy door
Did you ever have a problem with the cabinet lining up when you fold it up. I have some spaces on either side and I cant figure out why? How far are the pins supposed to go into the holes?
Very nice job! I bought the same exact kit, and found it very challenging. I made two right rails (similar to your non-mirroring verticals). Also, when all put together, I have larger gaps at the bottom portion of the folded up frame than I do the top. Figured I'd try to hide it with the trim when I get there. Also, you lucked out having the bottom cabinets match the dimensions of your faux cabinets. Mine will be somewhat larger, so not sure if it will look funny. In retrospect, not sure I'm handy enough for this kind of job. I'd probably buy something pre-built if I had to do it again.
Yeah I designed the faux cabinets to match the actual cabinets. Took a little planning ahead. It’s definitely a learned skill. There are definitely times I think I should have hired a professional to do it. But most of the things I want are “custom” and I’d be paying an arm and a leg for. Plus I love staying busy with projects. So on to the next.
You made that look so easy and I really enjoyed your style of doing the video. I am seriously going to order the kit you listed and make this for our guest room / office. Thanks!
Thanks for this video it was super helpful! I want to do something like this but I don’t know if the full vertical will hold the weight of the double mattress I have already. What mattress did you use? Did you go for a lightweight one? Is it comfortable?
Great video! Definitely one of the better ones I've watched. Thank you for the pro tips on cabinet pulls. I noticed that a lot of people don't paint the interior of the murphy bed cabinet - why is that? Also, have you considered changing the headboard? One other thing, what did you do about your baseboards? Cut them off for flush mounting, or angle cut around them?
Great vid. In my head i was picturing around €300-€400 for timber but then mine was going to be very basic. I like your finish though, definitely going to take some inspiration from it.
Want to make this for my basement. Does the bed frame have more space than an actual queen mattress? Is there wiggle room? I was hoping to shorten height of the bed frame by a 2-3" bc of my ceiling height.
I've totally made a good chunk of the same mistakes you did 🙃 I'm officially at the vertical stage 🙌🏾....buuuuut also realize all this really means is I'm maybe about halfway through considering filling, sanding, painting and building a cabinet to frame one side. Most days I totally feel like I'm over my head (....I don't REALLY know what I'm doing....mostly playing Ash the Builder 🤫). I'm still deciding on a hardware solution because the long ones I want are dumb expensive 🫥. Were you able to get the 1x3s flat once you screwed the pulls in?....Or should I maybe install the pulls before I secure the mattress support? Also (because I have no clue what I'm doing 😁) do you have any vides of how you built the cabinets? 🤔 Thanks!
Nobody knows what they’re doing. We’re all just figuring it out as we go. That’s what I tell myself at least. The 1x3’s I did get to sit flat by insetting the screw heads on the back side. I didn’t make much of a video for the built ins but I do have this short. ruclips.net/user/shortskC5xWR-Ktns?si=vbs0wGNuM1W-RjSP
How did you build those cabinet doors? Given how you are assembling them, it looks like they may be prefab? If so, let me know where you got them, they look great!
Is the bed strong enough in the middle? Is it deflexing in the middle? I think the support beams are too small in height to prevent bending in everyday use.
Question for you. I am getting ready to build one myself. The plans use mostly 3/4" (0.75") plywood. Quality sanded plywood is sold in 23/32" (0.71875") Yes, this is a tiny difference. Did you need to adjust anything for that difference?
Looks great, man! Did you thin your cabinet paint down at all? Also, i'm curious why you couldn't just drill the holes for the handles all the way through -- was it a matter of the bolts not being long enough to make it through all of the material? If so, you could have just counter-bored through the back side until the handles bolts were sticking through enough to grab the handles -- and it would have made the painting easier -- I might be misunderstanding something, though. Looking forward to the next project!
I did thin the cabinet paint down some. May have had something to do with it running? I think it’s because I had the sprayer up so high and the window open in 90+ degree weather mainly. I probably could have drilled all the way through but it would have in my mind been more of a headache. I would have been drilling through the three-quarter inch faux cabinet styles, then the three-quarter inch plywood on the face of the bed, and then potentially the bed struts, depending on where they fell on my holes. I would have also had to remove the 1/4 inch panels that go on top of the struts to access the screws. Glad to see you are gonna stick around for the next one! Just give me some time to think of it! Might be some workshop cabinetry/organization.
I used the cheapest sanded plywood they had knowing I was going to paint it. Looking back I wish I would have used birch for the bed portions and the cheap stuff for the built ins.

It’s comments like this that make me want to continue posting!
I appreciate the transparency 🙏🏽 respect
Just here figuring it out as I go.

Incredible job! looks epic!

Dude, that is a masterfully made Murphy bed. Thanks for taking the time to make this very helpful video

great job! thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching!

Thanks for sharing, that was cool I will be trying it at some point this year👍

I love to hear it! I love seeing a good project!

Very nicely done. Bravo!
Thank you! Getting better project by project.
Thanks! Great tutorial. Don't you think that handles on trim will pull the trim off?
Did you use Brad nails for the Trims and Faux Doors?
is this doable for a king size bed?
Is the bed strong enough in the middle? Is it deflexing in the middle? I think the support beams are too small in height to prevent bending in everyday use.
When you open the bed do the faux cabinet handles rest on the ground? Or what holds the base wait of the person sleeping? And great video!
There is fold down legs on the end. They hold it off the ground about 6 inches.
Do you have the specs on what kind of wood you used/sizes and amounts?
Thank you, great video
I would also like to know what legs you used. Great job!
I just used the legs that came with the Murphy bed kit.
Question for you.
I am getting ready to build one myself. The plans use mostly 3/4" (0.75") plywood.

Yes, this is a tiny difference.
Did you need to adjust anything for that difference?
I didn’t need to adjust anything! That should still work out just fine.
You made a queen sized Murphy bed. What is the shortest the bed could've been, without the trim work? My ceiling is 92.5 inches, could I make it work?
Amazing, this is definitely what I want mine to look like. What were the legs of the bed?
They came with the Murphy Bed Kit. Linked in the description to Amazon
Looks great. Roughly how many hours did it take to build? Not including paint
I just worked on it in my spare time, but not including paint maybe 4 days?.. just a guess.
Awesome video.. just curious, how much do you charge for something like that?
Great job. Looks really good, but I don't get the colors people choose in the modern era. lol
That’s the beauty of paint easy to change with the era. Although it is getting pricey.
@@SatisfyDIY You got that right, brother.
How about turn it lengthwise for ceilings with angles?
You could turn it lengthwise. It is a different kit though.
What are the overall dimensions of of just the box for the queen bed?
Looks great, man! Did you thin your cabinet paint down at all? Also, i'm curious why you couldn't just drill the holes for the handles all the way through -- was it a matter of the bolts not being long enough to make it through all of the material? why did you not drill right through for the handles?
then you could have put them on after paint.
Was the cost of the wood for the entire project or just the bed alone?
That was total cost for the entire project.
You didn't attach the cabinets to the back wall? They are just stacked up on each other basically?
Correct. They are stacked and fastened to the side walls/bed frame/toe kick.
Lumber prices are ridiculous right now.
I don’t disagree with that.
How thick is the mattress used?
12 inches. The kit recommends 6-12”
Great project with the bed, what size is the bed
Comes in multiple sizes but this one is a queen vertical setup.
What are the dimensions?
What kind of wood did you use for the project?
I used the cheapest sanded plywood they had knowing I was going to paint it. Looking back I wish I would have used birch for the bed portions and the cheap stuff for the built ins.
Can you share the template? I would love to make this!!
I don’t really have one. If you buy the Murphy bed kit they have step by step instructions
The kits comes with dimensions and material list?
@jhanye1 yes the kit makes it pretty easy.
howmany sheets of ply did it take?
The bed portion takes 6 sheets.
I think I used another 2 for my built ins.
Do you have plans for this?
They come with the Murphy Bed Kit.
The plans for the built-in's came with the bed also? What size bed?
Oh no I just fit the built ins to the room I had left. The bed is a queen size.
it must not work since he didn't open and close it at the end
