I gave in and agreed to share my office space as the guest room. We don't have visitors that often so two to three weeks a year without my office shouldn't be that bad. The Murphy bed is a great way to save space. So this will work out perfectly. I'll eventually have to build my office area in the closet, this will just make things more convenient for me. All I would have to do is close the door. This will be done in a future video
Info:
- unfortunately, I don't have any plans it was sketched. This will be a priority on my to-do list.
- A typical Murphy bed kit cost around $300.00 I took a cheaper route
- The materials to build this bed cost me around $360.00

This is my favorite plan so far. I don't want to spend a fortune on a DIY kit and this bed is elegant, simple and looks very sturdy!
Just make sure the hinges you get for the pivoting the bed are very strong. Now a days. They use so much recycled metal that bends.
I don't like the bed head I have to move every time
@@user-fb8ef5tc2rhonestly don’t know why he made it bulky like that. A simple common board fixed to the wall would’ve sufficed!
But you always appreciate people doing things a little different
As a professional carpenter and designer this would have to be one of the best builds i've seen in awhile, absolutely fabulous!!! This guy really knows his stuff and a big thanks for taking the time to show others!
Cheers
I wanted to stop by and say thanks for doing this video. It inspired me to try doing a build from scratch. I have since built a queen version of this bed and it took off from there. You have really set the bar for many of us, new woodworkers. Thanks again for all you do. Continue to inspire!
"Holy crap; it worked great!" Your design/build talent is exceeded only by your humility and humor. Thank you, my brother!
Seat pivots. Exactly the solution I was looking for. Starting my build tomorrow
How did it go?
"Cool" for sure, but what I like the most is the sloped head board. Perfect for sitting up and reading. 👍
OK I know this is an old video but you really made my day. What started as my small home-office/guest bedroom has also morphed into an upholstery studio and work-working shop and things are getting pretty unmanageable with a giant bed in there. People keep telling me to nix the guest bed but I never want to be in a position where I can't welcome friends or family members into my house if they need a place to stay - long term or short. I've been researching murphy bed builds for 2 years now, and this is the first design I've come across that I can both trust and afford. I bought heavy duty swivels recently for vintage barstools I am restoring and was surprised at the strength and quality, but it never would have occurred to me that I could use them for this application until now. And they are a fraction of the cost of the least expensive murphy bed hardware kit!!! Thank you so much for sharing this brilliant idea and thorough instructions. Super innovative. Enthusiastic subscribe!!!
Amazing, Beautiful and Beautifully simple/clean look.
Gotta love it when a miscalculation turns genius. "as if I didn't use enough screws"..
Bro, ya can never have enough screwin.
Awesome furniture..
Phenomenal vid quality..
I hope you get an Oscar....
Sick!!!
I'm a Murphy bed enthusiast, of sorts. I've built several of them and this one looks great in the space it occupies. One of my favorite things about building things like this is the need to custom tailor it to the space.
This is brilliant! I love the innovation and creativity that went into planning/executing this idea, esp the swivel hardware in places of the $300 + murphy bed hardware. Genius!
I like the use of PPE to protect the hearing. For those who don't know, hearing does not regenerate. Once it's lost, it's forever. Two thumbs up, and an enthusiastic subscriber.
You have a trade. You believe in excellence. You explain well. Build a company. You could bespoke bedrooms or kitchens and living room furniture. Very impressive.
Mount a piece of artwork on the underside of the bed when it's in it's up position. Also, go ahead and actually use your little shelf and decorate with whatever accent pieces... but glue them in place ;-)

Doesn't matter that I could never do this, your video is absolutely EXCELLENT! You are a gifted teacher. And your skills are fabulous, the drawers, the shelves...loved watching this, you have a lucky family. Me? Buying a hammock for grandma, hope she likes it : )
This is exactly what I needed to see. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to try a much simpler version. But those swivels gave my ideas life!
Such a great build. You are very talented and the pride in your work shows in the quality. Terrific!
You are now my favorite diy woodworker. You rock and I love your commentary. very true to life.
Thank you1 Means a lot.
Your video had me throughly entertained! Very positive, productive and professional!
Absolutely 100% great job!!! I have watched a lot of these Murphy Bed DIY videos, yours is the best! Clear, precise instructions from a pro! Thanks man!
Omg I love this!! You were so clear in building it out I feel like I can do this without a kit now! I want to try this but add a drop down desk while the bed is stored so I can use that room for an office. Thank you!
straight to the point, no Steven Spielberg shit and very informative. all people considering making instructional vids can learn a lot from you. I'm subscribing. thanks a lot
Thank you, glad to have ya. :)
DIY Creators I've actually started building this for a Queen sized bed a progressing fairly well.. The only part I've had trouble with is visualizing the clearance needed to avoid the wall and floor from the swivel.. Using a "to scale" cardboard cutout, I was able to nail it to a board in the correct place to physically see where I needed to center the swivel.. My floor to ceiling is 91" and have calculated 86" from floor to the top of the mattress box with appropriate clearance below.. I notice on your final product that there's far more clearance space below than up top.. Is this camera "illusion" or is less clearance needed for the top "downswing"?
DIY Creators Oh!! I feel I should also mention that the mattress box comes in at 81.5" and the clearance needed down below was 4.5" so if the same were needed up top, I might have to cut out a section of the top enclosing crossboard of the entire unit, if one could even fit at all..
DIY Creators Because obv that would equal 90.5" wherein the entire floor to ceiling height is 91"...
@@paulhavenjr774 Sorry, three years late but...
...what about a horizontal, "Murphy" bed?
DUDE!! This is exactly what I am looking for! I want to build in my enclosed trailer and this is the perfect idea for the bed arrangement. Thanks!
Deep and abiding respect! At the tender age of 71, I'm still considering the counter-spring hardware, but be sure I'll recommend your design.
I have been looking for SIMPLE Murphy bed ideas, and found this. You did an awesome job, and this is way easier and cheaper than those designs that use a kit dedicated for the bed. THANKS for the great video.
Great build. Beautiful craftsmanship. Ive been wanting to get a pocket hole jig for builds such as this. And I especially like the use of swivel chair mounts. Thanks for sharing!
Jonny DIY , the swivel chair mounts was genius! I've been looking at Murphy bed kits online for weeks, and that solved the price issue!
If you're interested these are some great woodworking plans you could use: HootWood.com
Hey Jonny DIY, I got a cheap pocket Jig kit on Amazon for less than $30, Milescraft PocketJig200 , its a great buy
Jonny DIY me too!!!
Great job building the bed. Awesome circular saw dust collection. And on a random side note I think the green wall color works really well with the white trim and the floor color.
+Jay Bates Thanks man, lol I was really thinking about lightning up the paint color but then I remember how much I hate painting.
+DIY Creators - Build Something ... painting is worse than sanding... just saying lol
Great video! And very nice build! And why is it that men always hate painting? I love painting (except ceilings).
Not all men hate it. I like it. Even though anybody can slap paint on a wall, there are definitely tricks and techniques for making the finished job look professionally done. I think a lot of people dislike painting because they are unaware of these techniques and their finish product comes out looking like shit after going through all that trouble. One hugely important factor in the final outcome is how thoroughly you prepped it. Some people say that a paint job is 80% prep work. Those people are low- balling that number. It is at least 90%.
Safety first....except not always, flip flops. You're a very skilled craftsman. Great video. Safety glasses. lol
I can't tell you how many murphy bed videos I watched before I got to yours but yours is the one that I will use to build my murphy bed. Your hardware hack is just what I was looking for. Thanks!
I can see two flush circular lights set in the top frame of the bed shinning down on the headboard area for reading in bed or small decorative lamps on each side of the bed. You did a fantastic and beautiful job making this Murphy bed without the expensive Murphy bed mechanical parts. WOW it is very very nice.
Great video! Using the swiveling boat seat mounts was genius!
I made a bed like this. Headboard was already attached. The legs were magnetic so easily removed when beds in the wall. The underside of the bed was papered and painted the same as the surrounding wall. You couldn't tell if I had a bed in the room. It looked like an optical illusion. Nice video my friend.
Phil Richmond reply with a link to photos. Sounds neat.
love the simplicity of this and a very nice finished product. Would never have thought of an angled headboard but might use that. Thank you and well done
That build is AWESOME! I want to install a Murphy bed in our van/mini-RV, and your video will be a great guide and INSPIRATION!
This actually helped me out a lot! I've been trying to find something to help me make a movable bed thing to give me more space in my bedroom.
Damn, that's genius. What a fantastic build!
Thank you so much for this, I just finish building my own Murphy bed (140x210cm)and thanks to you it only cost me 600 euro including 2 gas springs (700newton pressure per piece) and all the wood and stuff. Now I have a movie🎥🍿 room and when the screen is up I can fold down the bed to 💤😴 so thanks allot mate.
You sir, are a genius and your videos get straight to the point! Best walk thru of DIY pull down bed I have seen. Great job!
great project, and the finish looks terrific...I know it's not final now, but you did a great job of making it smooth and well-lined-up...everything runs so smoothly...
Thank you :)

"Holy crap, feels like I cheated"
Love it 😜🔥❤
What a GREAT design!!! Love this bed. Going to use your basic design by incorporate two wooden file cabinets I have for my bottom 'night table surfaces' on either side since mine is going in my home office. Thanks for the video and 'boat seat swivel' ideas!! What a savings!!!
Very well done! I'm going to attempt this myself for a small room in a barn my husband and I have converted to a house. Thanks, you rock!
This was the best, least expensive and easiest that I've seen this done. It also allows for different modifications in order to design the style of aesthetic/cosmetic look that anyone can do to fit their own taste. Very Well Done!!
was that heavy to take down or hang up? can any older person do that?
BasicTruth1109 Is it possible to make this in a twin size?
Is there a list of materials? I'm wheelchairs dependent & would have to hire someone to build/help build this.
Anyone out there live in MD who would be willing/able to help me?
Kathie Zink I live in MD, I'm sure if you ask around to your friends, someone knows someone who is creative with wood like this Brilliant Builder. Good Luck
Kathie Zink : NOPE , ONLY WORKS WITH QUEEN SIZE, you cannot make this any smaller... genius.
Mike Johnson can u explain y this only works with queen size
How could anyone down vote this? You did and awesome build and an instructive video.
Thank you Jen.
I believe it was the "Hardware" merchants/manufacturers. Lol!
Dang, Sir. This puts the murphy bed kit builds I’ve seen to shame. Very nice.
THANK YOU!! You just saved my family so much money on putting this video up!
SIMPLY ...........AWESOME !!!!! Thank you for saving me a lots of $$$$$$$ ...You should have your own show on TV, CONGRATULATIONS !!!!!!!!! And I will built up one just like that.
THANK YOU & GOD BLESS YOU !!!!!
This is hands down the best how to on a Murphy bed. Although mine won't be as detailed, it gave me the best ideas to follow. I'm truly thankful.
What a clever idea to use the fishing seat boat swivels. The floating shelves are another nice addition. Very nice quality. Well thought through plan. I have wanted to do a Murphy Bed for some time. I think this one will fit just nicely. Instructions were every clear and easy to follow. Oh yes the head board was an added bonus. Hate chasing pillows.
This is the best DIY murphy bed I've seen on youtube. The boat swivel is ingenious! I also like the shelving that doubles as legs. I would also add another shelf further down to take some load off the boat swivel. Looking forward to making this.
Great Video! Thanks for not explaining as you actually work. When people do that it's usually dull and a whole lot of ahh, um, you know, and like making it hard to listen to or understand. The unlikes must be mistakes, LOL.
I agree!
10:03 Leg shelf 😹 idk why I thought that was so funny lmaoooo when it’s down it’s a leg, when it’s up it’s a shelf.... leg shelf lmfaooooo 😂😂🤣🤣🤣.... this was really well done tho!!! Good job!!! You make it look so easy lol
I really appreciate how thorough you are when explaining everything. Thank you for your great content.
DIY creator you are a true creator and I want to say thank you for the Idea..I live in the Dominican Republic and $250 or $300 for a murphy kit translates to a lot of money ..Thankyou for this Idea.
Another fantastic build Glenn. Thanks for the info. Been looking into ways to build a murphy bed to install in my camper build. $7.00 for boat chair swivels....Great idea!
ditto - the murphy bed that was Oem is so flimsy - this is great creative.
Love it that you even decorated the room and everything. So dedicated to details.
I know this is a 4 yr old vid but just wanted to let you know it is very good.
Love seeing younger men getting into wood working. Very nice job guy !!
Bet your in-laws are proud of you.
WOW,...I'm impressed, not just by your building skill but also by your design skill. Very clever and well done. This looks like something I should do for myself and my very small bedroom. Thank you
I like it brother. Love the "trim" drawer fronts. brilliant idea I'll be using that idea myself. ;) Great project
wow this guy is talented!
This is the best Murphy bed I have seen! You did an excellent job. I have wanted to make one for years, but never found one I REALLY liked. Just fantastic! You are very talented.
Brilliant! Great Instructional video! Well done!
+rho lees Thank you
Man, that bed is awesome! I really enjoy your channel.
Thank you :)
I'm actually glad I found your channel late. I've seen a lot of good videos lately and got excited about what I might build but...
...you do it "McGuyver" style and it still looks like a million! Hardware kit my...
...you're the best yet. Thank you for sharing this with us. Be safe!
I recently followed you because your DIY projects caught my eyes and I have been watching your contents since. Thank you for making good quality contents it gives me something to think about and what I would like my diy project to be.
Excellent job, Glenn! I've always wanted a Murphy Bed. This video caused me to see I could do it myself..... Thanks!
VERY NICE
dang, you made that look easy! You have some mad skills bro. Excellent job !
Thank you.
nice video man! made it look really easy, dicovered your channel yday and subscribed!
one thing however, please put the t-nuts on the other side of the plywood otherwise theyre going to fall out! might get a suprise when sleeping or folding up/down!
i did see you had a problem with a t-nut on your fast cut stop-block, that was also on the front, the t-nut is meant to have the the thing its stuck to between it and the bolthead, otherwise it will fall out sooner or later!
Thank you. As far as the t-nuts on the bed I believe I stated that I have 2 per hole. One inside and out side. I am aware that I placed the t nuts on the outside of the block. I did present a solution as well. That is overshadowed by the mistake I made.
np, as long as i works for you :)
+DIY Creators do you have plans posted, so that this can be recreated?
First, a fantastic job of editing, light, close ups, narration etc.!! So easy to see and understand your project which I am keeping to do! THANK YOU!
Love the setup, the dust collection, the head board. All of it. Keep going...
that was awesome. you're a genius
Thank you.
Great job! I'm definitely copying this.
Thank you, all yours.
ditto
Wow that was really great. The slanted head board was a nice touch. Finally a DIY Free Standing Murphy Bed!! Thank you DIY Creators!!
Ingenious! Thanks for the inspiration. I can now do this for my two small bedrooms. Thank you again.
Sir, this is brilliant and a beautiful bed! I just looked over one that was a $1300.00 build....and I was like....naaaahhhh! I too have a spare room I want to use for an office/game room for myself and children. But my son and daugther in law come down once a month to stay for a weekend on his leave, so we need a place for them to sleep. We currently have a pull out sofa but it's big, bulky and not comfortable at all!
I'm subscribing to your channel as it's very well done and visibly clear how to make this. Do you have plans for this yet? I'd love to see them!!!
Well done!
Thank you.
One of the very best videos I've seen on building a Murphy bed.
I hope your in-laws were impressed! ;) You did an amazing job on that build. Some builds I end up skipping thru the videos or writing my comments as it's playing. But I was so impressed and interested with your build, I watched it thru to the end. I'm finishing out a tiny cabin and a wall bed would be a perfect fit. Thank you for a great and informative video.
Hey, first off... I love this and your commentary.. Secondly, I'm in the middle of this build and wondering how far out from the wall the bed is attached? Thinking about my clearance space for the rotation.
Thanks!
Brilliant, simply elegant design! This is the first of you videos that I've seen and can't wait to see more from you! Subscribed!
Is that a full or queen mattress? If it's a full would I need to do anything different to put a queen in it's place?
The only differences should be the size of the mattress frame, the height of the shelving units (to match the length of the mattress) and the top piece (to span between the two shelving units).
Note that the queen-size mattress will be heavier, and some Murphy beds have extension springs to help lower and raise them. The springs could be attached out of view, from the head of the mattress frame to the bottom of the shelving units (near the front would give best lift). I'm not sure what size of springs to use. That would depend on the weight of the mattress and frame.
For reference, traditional bed sizes are:
Full-size = 54-inches wide by 75-inches long.
Queen-size = 60-inches wide by 80-inches long.

dang!!! this is badass
Love this channel. Straightforward, simple, and smart. Thanks for sharing!
Great Job!... Best one so far that I've seen that does not use the EXPENSIVE Murphy Bed Mechanism. You make it look easy!

thinking about some small recessed lighting under top shelf? This is a really nice bed. What grade of plywood did you use? Can you post your measurements/diagram?
You know Glen, the more I watch you build, the more impressed I become. You are truly an OTB thinker! Good Show old man! I wished I could afford you to do a killer project for me. I know you are one of few who could do what I envision. LOL...
Brilliant. I've been considering a MB for some time and I kept wondering about the other options. You sir answered my questions. Thank you and keep 'em coming!
great idea of using the Boat Seat Swivel hardware.... how is it holding up since Jan 2016 ?
Yes, @DIY Creators, I would like to know the same thing. Your video is straight to the point and actually cost effective. I have a bed that makes a perfect platform to modify into a Murphy bed, but most hardware out there is $300. How is the seat swivel hardware working out? PS I plan on doing this for a murphy bed that will be used daily.
I’ve used this same build in my bedroom on a daily basis, and the same boat seat swivels since June- I’m noticing gunk is getting caught in the swivels and strands of hair, all of this isn’t effecting the function that the swivels serve. It’s held up fine these past 6 months, but I do plan on replacing the hardware by the end of this year just to be safe as they’re pretty affordable and get a lot of use.... hope this helps!
@@JohnnyTemptation $14 every 6 months could be affordable. :D Boat seat swivel one of the best idea I ever heard!
Awesome video. I plan to build one myself soon. Thanks for the ideas.
What do you guys think about using pivoting hinges?
Awesome job! Did you ever stain or paint it?
I'm knocked out by your imagination and skill. What an artist. Peace to you too my friend.
Gorgeous and simple! What I love most about how you make things!
wow mate u realy made that looks easy. great result.
dont u need a working holiday wink wink.
Thank you. :)
This is "f" amazing 😉 can u make me one. Lol I would pay. I wish I had time n patients. Amazing wrk
I love your headboard - I'm thinking of modifying my kitbed now, Thanks for the great idea!
You're BRILLIANT!! Love the boat seat swivel idea! Great job!
Have you sketched out your plans yet? I'd really appreciate the measurements.
Very nice!! One question: Don't the 2x2's cause a comfort issue? Should there be plywood over it to give a solid surface?
I would have used 2x1's vice 2x2 but I doubt it's much of an issue because the bed probably isn't going to be used that often so it'll be a long time before it causes comfort issues on a 12in think mattress
I think 2x1s would warp in the middle from the weight. If you space the 2x2s frequently enough, the mattress won't sag between them.
I had the same thought. Plus you're likely voiding a mattress warranty putting it over 2x2's like that.
I didn't notice how thick the plywood was he used for the face, but what I would do is use a 1/4" plywood for the face, then the 2x2's, and lay a sheet of 1/2 or 3/4 ply on top of the 2x2's to give the mattress a firm, flat foundation.
That is my one and only criticism of this build. Aside from that, it's fantastic. I'll be using his design as inspiration for my build.
I plan to run the support members lengthwise in the bed structure and then affix bed slats on top of that to support the mattress, for air circulation under the mattress.
Great 👍👌👍 I am from South Africa followed step-by-step aside from using pocket holes and it came out perfect .
Man, i love your videos. You have a great sense of humor and sound like you actually are enjoying this. Great job - these tutorials are teaching me a ton. Thank you!
Awesome! Just saw this video and about to build a murphy bed of my own. Do you have the dimensions? I am looking to build a queen size version, mainly wanted to know how far out it sticks from the wall. Thanks!
I'm about to attempt the same thing. Queen size, did you get dimensions?
+Thompson no I just used bits of this video and the Lori wall bed plans. Also used the swivel seat hardware shown in this video. It's working well.
Did you install pistons?
did you ever build this? i too would like to build a queen size copy. Can you share your plans? Thanks!
