I plan to buy your plans for one very specific reason. I loved hearing your kid in the background. You didn’t kick him out. He was a part of the experience. Good dad, good plans.
Loved seeing your pint-size helper using the vacuum while dad drilled holes in the side boards. Teach 'em early and they'll have good work habits for a lifetime. And wonderful memories of helping daddy.
Well planned bedframe. The Lazy Susan bearings are such a cheap and easy option with many being rated for a couple hundred pounds. *Your push stick though, oh boy no wonder you were uncomfortable. I built a sword style with a handguard in the center and then at the very end to accommodate my safety needs. It's been great for everything and awkward pieces I can still easily grapple with it from whichever side, and use a scrap stick for the other.* 28 years ago, a massive piece of plywood yanked my hand into the blade. I lost an index finger tip that completely grew back, and the ring finger pad was totally blown open but the doctor flopped the pieces in, put in a few "Dr. Frankenstein" looking stitches, and it healed really well. *I did not touch a table saw for another 13 years!* I was and am an ultra elite level guitarist and that happened to my left hand, *the string hand!*
Bought your full size plans about a month ago. Built the bed in a low ceiling spot, with an angled hip wall, and had to convert it to a horizontal build. Had to build unit in place, as bed box and cabinetry would not have rounded the corner up the stairs and into the room built in the attic. Added a bookshelf to the top in the remaining space. Came out pretty good. Had to use it this week for company, and it wasn't entirely finished. Finished trim work tonight, and will prep and stain in the next few days. Thanks for getting me started!
Very good and smart of you to have an expert helper there, your son, vacuuming up the sawdust. Nothing better than teaching the young how to do things. I learned a lot from my dad by helping him and him teaching me. Thanks.
I want to thank Tyler for answering my question about the depth of outer frame .I built this bed using thong and groove 1x5 knotty pine. This was much cheaper than using plywood because of the pandemic raising the prices of big box lumber. It came out just great a little heavy for folding . I also added 3 in. to the outer shell as suggested by Peter Lowe because my mattress is 17 in. thick I also added a extra 5 in to the top of bed box. When we first folded it shut the open the mattress stuck nothing a strap did not fix you just have to take strap off before sleeping. It only took me a week to build thanks to the great plans and some helpful hints. Also my wife helped and her help was greatly appreciated!
I am about to build a Murphy Bed for my Travel Trailor. The main difference is that mine will be a horizontal build. Thank you for the incredibly informative video. You made the project feel accessible and manageable for people with little to no experience. I am pleased that there are more affordable hardware options like this one.
I wish you had a how to video for literally everything. You explain everything so well, have good camera angles on key parts of the project, and you have a way of stopping talking to let us digest whatever step you just described with such great pacing. I'm a tile guy, I don't know a thing about video editing and production. I'm certainly not the best judge out there but you really seem to have a talent at this, both woodworking and educating. Sub'd
I am so impressed with your young assistant: he will ask for a bigger paycheck at the end of this project! I look at him and remembered my son when he was his age. Now he is graduating from engineering at Penn State U. Thanks for this awesome video. A real inspiration for many.
The quarantine brought me here. I gotta say there’s no way I can build that because I lack all the tools and space to put it together but I enjoyed the video. And the kiddo helping around 🙂
I always wanted one of these beds in the spare room as space is tight but couldn't afford one. You've inspired me to make one - I just have to convince the husband to go away to spend a long weekend at his brothers and it will be a nice suprise when he comes back ! Thanks for a great video.
You have an adorable mini me. So thank you for making this. Your instructions were easy to follow with your helpful tips. And was a fun project to do with my own mini me version. Actually my son is not so much a mini me anymore, and more of a much larger grown out version mini me. We both enjoyed doing this project together. And thank you again for making this presentation! Sincerely best regards from Rob and Seth, Seattle Washington.
I like your shop so organized and really compact and useful. I see you put to drawers on the 2 sides of meter saw to hold your stuff you are working on. thats so smart.
I am so glad I watched your video . I was so lost with how I was supposed to build this. I only wish my brother's were there to help me move it into place. I would love to have that little man to vacuum for me. 😊
I have watched this video several times and I never get tired of watching it, someday I will do it, it makes it look so easy I don't have your knowledge to know the exact measurements, when I am going to do it I will go in and look for the Necessary measures, thanks for sharing this video
This is beautiful work... and your little man watching and helping is even more wonderful. To those doing this and using the bolts... I have an existing murphy I use daily, and this is how I anchor mine too (bought the bed used and original top clip was shot). I'm looking at making one for a sunroom as a summer bedroom and this is perfect! Thanks!
Owww that little guy with his protection gargles on vacuming the saw dust was the whole you tube special it took my freaking heart away!!!! I had to go back to see it a few time
Thank you for making this video. I just discovered your channel today and wish I would have a long time ago. I have plans to make one of these beds in the near future and this is very easy to follow. I really like that you have your little boy help in the shop. That is incredibly important not only for learning but for bonding as well. My little boy is going to college next year so I'm already getting nostalgic for the early days. Tech Tip: You mentioned that you had a tough time holding the large frame with various clamps etc. What I have done in the past is get a ratchet strap or put 2 together to get the desired length. Wrap it all the way around the frame and gently ratchet it together. It will hold even pressure around the entire frame and give you the rigidity you need to adjust your joints and shoot in the screws.
Very smart build. Like how you use the shelves as a bed base. 2 suggestions. 1st, for your your corner attachment. Get some of those inexpensive 90° clamps that are about 1 1/2" wide. 2nd, in the video you should have mentioned what you used for the swivel. I'm going to mention that those are $10 boat swivel seat bases. I have them on my boat. It takes a bit to swivel around which makes it a great use for something like this. GREAT JOB!
I'd like to find a place for your Murphy bed in my next cabin. Glad to see the little man helping out. That is so important at his age. You will reap a reward when he gets older.
I built a wall of various depth of shelves 30 years ago using 3/4” birch plywood and discovered the iron on veneer tape and it has held up well. I used Minwax Antique Oil Finish without a stain but it gave the wood a deeper look with a soft sheen and it has held up well despite having plastic bins of fabric and other items sliding across them without not having to be retouched. The tape on the edge made the shelves appear solid and was so easy to apply. We had recently moved in at the time and I wanted something that could quickly be completed without the typical multiple steps for traditional finish. I remarried 6 years ago and my husband who has become interested in woodworking had never heard of the veneer tape. They did have the typical glue on variety back then but I had more than 40 feet of shelving. We have talked about a Murphy bed in one of the bedrooms which drew me towards your video. Very nicely done!
Great build. I loved how your little assistant was so helpful. It's hard to get grown folks to do this kinda work nowadays. Great parenting, keep it up.
These are hands down the most brilliant Murphy Bed building plans I’ve come across so far. And I’ve been searching online for months! Thank you for this!!!!!
I'm a little unclear on why RUclips thinks that I have either the inclination or the ability to build this...lol... But I really enjoyed watching. A really well made video and your shop help is adorable!
That Murphy wall bed is perfect. I need one in my small office to make room for my grand kids when they come over. Looks very sturdy and simple and not much time to make. Thanks for the vider, gonna give it a shot.
EXCELLENT, SUPERB and PROFESSIONALLY Built my friend!! I certainly have the utmost respect for someone who does not edit out an "overlook". GREAT JOB and Video, Tyler.
Best built I've seen so far! Thank you! PS: I've been using clear coat finish and tinting with stain for many years. I don't have an expensive sprayer, I roll it on with a foam roller.
Great job Tyler, you have inspired me to build bunk beds for my two grandsons on your other video which I thought was fantastic. I really like this idea for temporary bed service for guests and your room is back to normal when they leave. Good stuff, love it. Al
Nice little project. Very impressed that you had a rookie helping you along the way. I don't have anywhere the tools at my disposal that you have. I was hoping that you could come up with another design for people with little tools.
I love that your kid is behaving well and doing his own project. I clicked on this video to make my own but changed my mind once you showed your workshop lol
Have to say That stain job looks fantastic. IMO gives it an aged look although it's brand new. Here's a secret from the upholstery world on those swivel brackets. Flip over a swivel recliner and you'll see, in that pizza board, as they're called, there's two holes large enough to grant access to the inside holes. Measure out a piece large enough for it to attach to and swivel without coming off the edge. Attach it to the swivel plate. Swivel 45 degrees and cut circles over the bottom set of holes. Now you have a way to get to those bottom holes without too much difficulty. You attach those first, two at a time, swivel to the next two and attach those. You would then attach the swivel board to the mattress side rail with heavy gauge screws from the inside. This is fabulous! But I want a queen size and I'm not confident enough to makes the changes in the plans! Beautiful and you did a great job of describing what you were doing!
You are so talented in woodworking and instructing. I could never build anything like this, but it was interesting and fun to watch and I came away with a couple of clever tips, namely mixing stain with topcoat and removing excess glue with a straw. Thanks for this very nicely done video!
Beautiful project! Love it. If I build this, I might add some kind of breathable mess underneath the mattress. Here, in the Pacific Northwest, it is very humid, not like living in an RV but sometimes, during a really rainy springtime, it can be close.
Great design, Mr. T...I have it built and recycled some old old cedar sub-flooring for the wall/underside when in the parked position. Each board is stained a different shade....14 in all Just figuring out the floating shelf/base system. I also found the Swivel Seat bases at WALMART FOR about 8 bucks each. BTW I used Valspar Cabinet and Furniture Oil enriched water clean paint. Lowes has it for around $53 a gallon but worth the hassle. I spilled some on the carpet...cleaned up nicely.
That is really great.....a really simple design, but nicely done....Love that.....I am an avid woodworker, but was afraid of this type of project...I think I will try this.....Thank you!~!~
you could probably just drill 4 holes through each mounting plate and screw them in, no need for bolts. 8 screws can hold a lot of combined weight. I've seen other people add in gas struts for car boots and other mechanisms to offset the bed weight. Looks like an easy enough addition to your project. Great job.
Nice. I like the style, the efficiency of it all. We're building a Net Zero house (smaller) starting in a few months, by November I'll need someone to do all the built--ins, cabinetry and there are a bunch of windows to build. (44) I couldn't afford you but your style is what I'm looking for.
Excellent tutorial! Best you tube diy video out there by far! quick, to the point, clear information, how to’s, links and best part plans..thank you so much! Can’t wait to try the build.
Hello Tyler, I recently purchased the queen Murphy bed plan from your website. I got so excited and went to the home improvement store to get the plywood cut
Really Nice. I'm a carpenter too. I have not really ever done furniture work but would have liked too. Don't know if I ever will ? You are Lucky you have a workshop. Good Luck
Hey, Tyler. I thought the shelves were overkill or unnecessary until I realized you built them to serve as the legs when the bed is down. Nice design and great solution.
The only issue with pre-tinted finish, is that it lacks the depth that a hand rubbed stain gives you. That said, many years ago when I was working in production cabinet shops, tinted lacquer was the common method of finish. Your project not only looks good, but nice to see an inexpensive option for Murphy beds. Keep up the great work.
I have seen lots of questions about a horizontal position and the use of gas springs, I did my Queen horizontal and added the gas springs super simple.
Nice job..My first table saw was a circular saw bolted from underneath. Now THAT made me nervous. :) The little "mistake" didn't even show in the end, came out awesome..
Its inspiring to see a skilled carpenter with access to a full shop build. But it's really out of reach for people who live in so little space that they NEED a wall bed. Have you considered doing some videos using the bare minimum power tools? Maybe working in the driveway or on the balcony? It could be even more inspiring to see how to build some of these great projects under minimalist conditions! Thanks for the video
Cool bed ... but the part that got me the most was you having your son there in the shop with you ... when I was a stay at home dad I always my kids around to reach them what I do.... this was before my ex stole our kids and moved in with another guy... in another state ... so far it's been 15 months and not so much as a phone call from my kids at all. I miss my kids ... anyways this is a cool build ...thanks

I went through a ton of videos on YT, this one is the what I need. Elegant design in less price. Thank you very much.
Great Job, great video. It is awesome to see you having your kids help and just being around your work.
Love and Great to see your kid also working with you at the 3 min 27sec. AWESOME!

David, this bed can be build without too much trouble using a circular saw and drill.
@@DIYTyler Thanks. I'm thinking I can take a wooden bed frame and Macgyver it by adding some 2 X 8 boards.
Great project. Keep the younger helper engaged!!! It's the same way I learned
Great job, you may want to look for a push pin instead of a bolt to hold the bed up. Looks super
Oh man. That little guy used to be me in my dads shop. Love it. PS - love how clean your shop is..
Fantastic project, Tyler! You explained everything very well, and the wood finish looks quite elegant. Plus, I love that glue squeeze-out straw trick!
Murphy beds are just so sweet. Nice work!
First time I've seen someone I subscribe to comment on another video
I love that your kid is behaving well and doing his own project. I clicked on this video to make my own but changed my mind once you showed your workshop lol
Have to say
That stain job looks fantastic.
You would have to figure out how to hide that board but beefing up the side rails for the mattress could do that and it will create extra strength.
I like and dislike the shelf idea.
Anytime you let the bed down, you've gotta empty those shelves.
But, it looks great and these beds aren't in constant use.
Great build young man!
Good to see dad getting the kids into something other than electronics.
Such a great helper you have. Right there for you the whole time.
What a fantastic addition to the office. The finish is spectacular too. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
Love the face grain on your plywood panels. Nice build.
that stain/clear mixture looks fantastic.
Thanks, way better than applying separate for sure!
@@DIYTyler yeah, i think it's a great idea. i don't have the experience with spray guns to do it yet though.

you could probably just drill 4 holes through each mounting plate and screw them in, no need for bolts. 8 screws can hold a lot of combined weight. I've seen other people add in gas struts for car boots and other mechanisms to offset the bed weight. Looks like an easy enough addition to your project. Great job.

Another great job Ty. I again commend you for getting the kids involved.
Thanks Dave!
I have seen lots of questions about a horizontal position and the use of gas springs, I did my Queen horizontal and added the gas springs super simple.
What gas springs did you use?
Very impressive! Looks better than most murphy beds out there.
Nice job..My first table saw was a circular saw bolted from underneath. Now THAT made me nervous. :)
The little "mistake" didn't even show in the end, came out awesome..
+Path in AZ That would be terrifying! Thanks for watching!
They call that the suicide saw for a reason.
Great project brother, and you have a cute helper there who likes to look cool 😎 when he works.
I have. Reasons I don't= the videos never perform well and I don't enjoy building like that.
Wow that looks beautiful! I love the finish, I never thought to mix the stain and clear coat... great idea.
Huge time saver!
Wow i am impressed and you're the first one with a great solution and how to do it. And the finish is awesome. 👍👍👍
Really nice job finish looked great and good to see the little one helping out
*loved the bed excellent job*
Your little boy totally makes the video. I'll be buying these plans. thanks
Really enjoy seeing your little helper. Would like to see more. THANKS!
Nice work, also you can do the L bracket from the top of the bed instead from inside so it will be hidden.
Getting ready to build this weekend!
