A couple of 4x2s on hinges mounted on the opposite wall with rubber stoppers on the end, one level with the base and the other with the top would make the bookcase seem solid from the other side when engaged would effectively make it just that. Relying on deception rather than full security, but should keep the kids safe from an intruder for a time should such a need arise.👍
My Dad designed our house when I was a child. He put in two secret doors, one small one. What treasures. And came in super useful for avoiding unwanted visitors too!

My dad used to tell me “it’s not the mistakes you make that define you it’s the way you fix your mistakes that define you !” Another of his saying was “if a job is worth doing it’s worth doing well” , alway do it to the best of your ability also “there is no such word as can’t” He died when I was 15 after 10 years of illness but I’m 53 now and I still abide by his advice in everything I do ! The only saying I made up is never moan about anything you’re not willing to change ! Ps I can do everything from carpentry to electrics plumbing plastering bricklaying electronics if it’s possible to do it I will have a go and if I mess it up I will find a way to make it perfect !

I've been woodworking since 7th grade... so 50+ years. I built my own secret 'bookshelf' door into a small attic space for storage, so I know how much work goes into these projects, especially when you're retrofitting into an existing structure. In my case, I had to work with structural studs spaced 24" on centers, so I used hidden zero-clearance hinges to maximize the width when open. All that to say - you really did a VERY nice job with your build. I wish I had an area in the house to do something cool like you did sectioning off the media room area. It really turned out quite well. Looks beautiful finished. Congrats. I hope your wife will now allow you to do more fun stuff...

I just completed a very similar hidden door. I installed 4 casters on the bottom of the bookcase so the hinges would have virtually no load on them. Worked perfect.

came across this as i was looking at murphy doors. i am 100% going this route for the bathroom door in the master bedroom. my wife would love a "secret door " use a book as the door knob to releaae the latch. congrats man your workmanship looks great

Amazing build! You said you aren't a woodworker, but your attention to detail is far beyond most! My only suggestion would be that your diagonal cross brace should be in compression instead of tension. But since you glued on your backings, it probably won't matter.
