As with a Gate the diagonal bracing Always ascends Upward for constant lifting.
As for Glue, yes from the very start.
A small bottom ball-bearing wheel would assist wonders with load swing.

If you were a little girl. ‘When’ implies this actually happened in the past
Also, using when and wouldn’t together makes no sense here. When and wasn’t go together in this case.
The fact people get super basic grammar wrong is a sign of a collapsing society.

A couple of 4x2s on hinges mounted on the opposite wall with rubber stoppers on the end, one level with the base and the other with the top would make the bookcase seem solid from the other side when engaged would effectively make it just that. Relying on deception rather than full security, but should keep the kids safe from an intruder for a time should such a need arise.👍

The only saying I made up is never moan about anything you’re not willing to change !
Ps I can do everything from carpentry to electrics plumbing plastering bricklaying electronics if it’s possible to do it I will have a go and if I mess it up I will find a way to make it perfect !

I've been woodworking since 7th grade... so 50+ years. I built my own secret 'bookshelf' door into a small attic space for storage, so I know how much work goes into these projects, especially when you're retrofitting into an existing structure. In my case, I had to work with structural studs spaced 24" on centers, so I used hidden zero-clearance hinges to maximize the width when open. All that to say - you really did a VERY nice job with your build. I wish I had an area in the house to do something cool like you did sectioning off the media room area. It really turned out quite well. Looks beautiful finished. Congrats. I hope your wife will now allow you to do more fun stuff...

So cool!! Add some type of heavy bar lock on the inside and you have a great "safe room".

Mag locks. Turn it on inside, then hide the shutoff switch where you can get to it in the house somewhere.@@Beau_Builds

@@Beau_BuildsThat's a good thought. My dad had a lock on the outside of the tool room for some reason. My little brother thought it would be funny to lock him in. He had to use tools to remove the door. No more door after that.

Wow!! How did you steal my dream??? I had a "dream" of doing something similar in our basement in NC... like a hidden room, not just a door. I have the ideas just not the expertise to make it come to fruition. Sure wish you were our neighbor. Awesome job!!

Amazing build! You said you aren't a woodworker, but your attention to detail is far beyond most! My only suggestion would be that your diagonal cross brace should be in compression instead of tension. But since you glued on your backings, it probably won't matter.
