I love how you’re worried about blacking out the hinge, so nobody notices, but you think nobody will look twice at a stack of VHS tapes in 2023. 😂
Nah; the Funko Pops will distract them...
Nah, it's retro decor.
Wait, nobody still rockin VHS?? LOL
Dads are priceless
now you just need the classic cheesy painting with the eyes cut out so you can peek into the room from your hidden location!
Something you may want to add is a spring mechanism to push open the door so youre not having to pull on the book to also open it.
Dude, I've been planning this project out for so long and was finally about to buy the hardware today (the same hardware you used), but talked myself out of it because it still felt a little over my head. This is exactly what I needed! Thanks man!
Really appreciated the honesty as you experienced trial and error. Great finished work! Your workshop is a carpenters dream!
Watching a father and son on a project is beautiful. Great job 👏🏻
Awesome work as usual, great to see the fam involved!
Brilliant! I think this is a great solution for access to a utility closet or mechanical chase! Also a great place to keep holiday decor that one doesn't want to have to go up into the attic to retrieve each holiday season! Not to mention down here in the coastal areas, it would be great safe room to hide during tornado warnings. Hello from northwest Florida!
Without a nosing on the shelves, they will sag from the weight of the books . I love your project. Beautiful and concise. I'll try to use that design here at home, scaled down, as I don't have that much floor space. But this inspires design variations, inviting creativity. Kool Beans.
Fantastic work, Johnny! It turned out better than I thought! 😃
Really well done!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
And happy holidays!
Came out awesome! I do think a wall mount for the TV centered both horizontally and vertically with the bookcases would look better. Or perhaps a custom box that would recess the TV into the wall and frame it out to look like a picture frame? Also, you could have all the wires for the TV and any accessories hidden completely behind the wall and even install an outlet for the TV on the inside of the wall. Potentially, you could also have any accessories completely hidden from view if you wanted. Great work, and keep the viedeos coming, brother!
Love the father son moments. Same thing I am going through with my son.
Man, the handiest tool in your entire arsenal is definitely your dad. That man knows what he's doing! Awesome project.
And he looks kind of annoyed when his son sets up his line laser and fancy tools…
Great little project and it looks like your Dad enjoyed it as much as you did. Good choice on the VHS tape as a trigger... nobody will suspect VHS is capable of anything these days :) I would have hung the TV on the wall so everything is tidy and contained. Hope your collar is getting better!
Love the fun and functionality of this. When our house was built, the space under the stairs was where all the drywall and carpet debris went. So we cut a similar hole, covered it in a tarp, and made our own secret hidey hole.
We even finished it with the scrap drywall they'd left behind.
That secret door is awesome. I like how you used the vhs tape for the pull
I think some BetaMax tapes would have been a better choice, lol. Great project, dude! And fund to see J5 in there.
Laserdisc! 😂 thanks man
Dude the collarbone and I remember the Guest House was done with a boot on! Glad you are feeling better and thanks for the content!
You should consider wall mounting the TV with a hidden cable run since you have easy access to the space behind it.
Awesome work Johnny! 😃👍🏼👊🏼
That’s some amazing work!
I want to build a shoe storage cubby hidden behind a mirror in my entryway. Getting a lot of inspiration from your video 👍🏻
This would be awesome for a hidden Audio/Video Closet for a home! Even better if you have your networking stuff in there too! Run all the wires in the closet, put the Router and any other consoles, Run your Stereo setup and anything else.
If you attached the top and bottom trim to the bookshelf as well you could eliminate the 1/16th in top and bottom gap (or at least hide them with the trim).
This would cause the top trim to clash onto the side trim, it wouldn't work
@@bmudri I thought of that but figured there could be a way to make it work but you may be right
Great and informative video! Thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
Thats cool👍 Great build🥰👊
Secret doors are always fun. Thanks for the videos. Did you move the motion detector out of the room?
Great video.
From the building and all the small tricks you learnt in here. Dam this is impressive. I would never of guessed the problems you went in. That's a lot of hard work
This is rad! Would it be worth it to chisel out a spot for that VHS hinge to hide it too? Just thinking out loud. Love the channel and this build, gonna save this for my own project notes!
Great job!
I’m 1:46 in and when you say you overlooked something, I’m guessing you forgot about the casing on the hinge side and how it will hit the wall, not allowing the bookshelf to swing open. I’m excited to see how you overcome this obstacle!
Bingo!
It probably doesn’t look like Mitch but I would have liked to see what it looks like to enter the secret room and what the secret room looks like. Very cool project!
I have a room I want to do this to someday and I've considered just keeping the door on the hinges and mounting the shelf to the door itself. Have to figure out how to handle latches with a setup like that though...
Brilliant work.... a question at the end to put the hinges, WHAT WAS THE DISTANCE THAT LEW GAVE AFTER THE CORRECTION???? Thank you.
Thanks goodness for Dad!
This looks great. How much weight would those hinge pins and that shelf hold? I was wondering if there were more books on it, would that be too heavy?
That's cool 👍I think I would have taken one step further, I would use a electric (Battery Operated latch) with a button hidden at a different location, which would make it harder for someone else to find and open secret shelf.
Nice work! Would it be a consideration to put a spring on the VHS to pull it back into position? Or does it go back into place easily enough on its own?
Sweet build! Not sure where I learned this but use windshield washer fluid to thin out thick paint like that. I used this method to spray thick exterior paint on shutters.
Good tip!
If the VHS tapes in the Ben Hur case decide that they don't want to be a secret door latch anymore, you can just replace them with some plywood inside the case, and paint the wood bits that show black. Great video, btw. You planning on making a secret napping spot back there, kinda like what the Hacksmith did recently?
Great video and fantastic job really cool I spied a funko frasier models really cool.
Love me some Frasier! Still need to add Niles
2:30…you and the perkins crew need to be hypnotized into wearin some type of gloves when workin with buildin materials 😆
RFID locking mechanisms are sweet.
Did the shelving take into account the weight of the books (or full load bearing) for the door hinge clearance?
The trim gaps are easy to cover with different trim or carved onlays.
I somehow didn't even think about electronic mechanisms, would have been fun! The hinges are rated at something like 200 lbs so I didn't worry about the weight causing issues with the gaps.
Needs a small covert surveillance camera mounted high on the wall so that you can view the main room whilst inside the secret room.
Very cool!
I saw this same hinge on another video and it looks pretty slick, but wouldn't it be a lot easier if they just had a spring loaded pin so you don't have to drill a hole to lower it?
Hello... tell me what program did you use to make a computer simulation of the door rotating? Thank you.
lol, My Cousin Vinny! One of my favorite movies!!
"What is a grit anyways?" So good!
@@craftedworkshop the 2 yoots
you have an awesome dad.
You could use some sheet metal between then jam and the latch so it slides on metal.
Looks good now that’s it’s painted. I was concerned that you didn’t out the usual amount of precision into it at first. One recommendation would be add a second, longer cable on the inside that your son can reach. I can see him going inside and shutting the door and not being able to reach the latch at the top
10:30 He can reach it where it is.
I got the chance to build one in one of my clients basement when I finished it. It’s a room that is under the garage and is the size of a two car garage. Perfect pew storage room.
Nice, that sounds cool!
Full height cabinet, with a "false" bottom that can be lifted up and out to access the stairs or ladder 😊
On the top hinge- We couldn’t get the door to go past the set screw that was lowered so the hinge pin was raised into the door jamb. Is the set screw supposed to go through the hole in the bracket attached to the cabinet?
That void space can now double as a panic room. LOL
SHOUT OUT TO DAD
To avoid all the hassle of getting the trim to clear, install the secret door so that it opens inwards. When closed, it simply pulls up tight agains the backside of trim pieces.
I design joinery for a cabinet/wardrobe company (we don't use Sketchup as a business, but I do personally--along with some cabinetry software) and we get asked about these hidden bookcase/doors a fair bit. We just have to say no. They are far too complex and detailed for us--customers just don't like me saying no. It's great to see you problem solve as you go, and it's okay to make mistakes.
if you want to put things like Funkopops on the swinging shelf, you can use museum wax to fix the bases in place without damaging them, that way you can still move it without worrying about them falling over!
Well done Johnny! As you noted, a big part of building things is having to work around the mistakes that we all make. I would also put a nice combo radio/stereo/VCR system inside that space with speakers inset on the outer walls which worked via a hand held remote control unit. Just a thought...👍👍
❤️
Guessing nobody will watch Ben Hur, it’s actually a decent movie especially given the time. He happens to have a set to watch.
Super cool project. The paint on the shiplap looks like it orange peeled really bad. That would drive me nuts. Did you role it?
I think you're seeing the roller texture, my dad rolled after I sprayed.
@@craftedworkshop killer project! Love your content
i can't believe he used a classic like ben-hur
Id like to see this idea with a keyfob feature instead of a a pull string feature someday.
Or have is use a magnet to unlatch it.
An electromagnet would provide more security than a trick VHS. You could power it with a remote or your phone. Great build, though.
Cheers to the Utopias on display!
Looks really good but I would mount TV on wall
I’m gonna have to change my Ben Hur secret door handle now that you have let the cat out of the bag 🤣
😂
Looks good … when I built my house I put a hidden room in to hide my pew pews 🇺🇸👊🏼👊🏼🪚🔨
Nice dual purpose space. Also serves as a guest bedroom for 11 year old orphaned wizards.
Why isn’t that tv mounted to the wall???? Omg!!!
Good Stuff
Could have gotten some coin for that JP vhs tape
I have nothing to say really, but I appreciate your content, and wish to help with the yt-algorithms.
boy…it did turn out nice…
Why didn you pull down the trim in the top and buttom so they follow the door out. Then the door would be completly hidden. Now you can see it if you really want to.
But besides that really nice project.
The trim would contact the wall in that case.
@@craftedworkshop Yes it should also just like it does at the left side where you open the door. Then its all covered up. Now you have a small gap between the trim and and the top. Im sure of you on the light on the backside you can see it thrue the gap.
Dude that type of break hurts worse than people think.
Please wall mount the TV!
Leave a crowbar in that room lol
So cool. Your kids are going to have the best time hiding in there!
Thanks, and I definitely think the boys will love it!
Put_the_candle_back. (Nod to Young Frankenstein)
I remember when RUclips had actual woodworking channels that knew what they were doing.
What's behind the door though?????
haha well that is a nice job
You should have hung the tv on the wall and saved some floor space. Other than that nice job.
Stay safe.
buuuuuut what did you do with the secret room?
But whats going in the secret room?
imagine doing a project for the sake of it....
Poor VHS tape...
Why not hang the TV on the wall?
But, what if we want to watch My Cousin Vinney?
the jenk is real
All you need now is a bed in there so you can hide from yourself when you don't feel like working.
sooooo not going to hang the TV?
I guess it ain't a secret anymore!
Hah, true!
We used pantyhose to strain paint
I don't understand completely the point of the wall in the first place.
