How to transform your home with custom built-ins.

- How gorgeous is this custom built-in bookshelf? I can’t take all of the credit, I teamed up with Kevin
from Fine Point Cabinetry, and together, we built a 15-foot custom built-in bookshelf unit for our
client. The two-toned look of natural rift-sawn white oak looks so beautiful against the Benjamin
Moore Kendall Charcoal that the client and interior designer chose. And the backlit LED shelf lighting
adds such a modern and luxurious look to this custom build.
Many thanks to my buddy Jesse Hoover from JH Craftsman for the LED electrical work and the
drywall patching! And a huge thank you to Lindsey Meehan Designs for coordinating this
commission.

the amount of planning up to and including the execution for a piece like this is insane. I continue to be amazed by precision executed in these projects. It's inspiring! Keep it up!
Thank you very much! We absolutely will!
Amd some people do not want to pay or want to come tell you that Peter, Paul and Palmero is doing it cheaper for them so you can be foolish enough to lower your price. 🙄
This is INSANE Keith! You guys are beast. One thing I love about seeing how Kevin works is that he's super efficient, knows just what to do and has a bunch of old tools that just do the job.
The end product is mindblowing! I would say I kinda loved the old stuff that was in there, coulda fit nicely with a high-end midcentury Nakashima/FLW style, but the work you guys did was incredible
Thanks very much, Dave!
Im a carpenter of 13 years and have done alot of trim work and cabinets in my time. You inspire me to pursue a dream. Thanks for the great content
That is awesome! Thank you!
I’ve built cabinets for years and I produce a pretty good well loved product. I learned so much from this build that will save me headache and time. Excellent video!!
That's awesome! So glad it was helpful. Thanks so much for the comment 👍
Gorgeous design and execution. Really like to see the collaboration projects where you call out new tips and tricks you pick up from from other builders. Witty and funny videos, love this channel. Keep ‘em coming KJ
Thanks so much! We greatly appreciate the kind words, Peter!
My toxic trait is that whenever I watch a woodworking video online, I think "Oh, with a little practice and the right tools, I could easily do that." Then I see your videos, Keith, and I am humbled so damn hard. Thank you for showing your craft in an exciting, yet brutally honest way. 🤣
Thanks very much for the kind words! And woodworking is just a process of steps, just like anything else. More experience allows you to complete those steps with better accuracy, quality and more efficiency. I still haven't come to terms with that efficiency part on all my builds, though. 😂
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Seems pretty efficient to me!
I was thinking the same. I was considering building it. After watching this incredible video, my only thought is "how much he charges to built this art in my house".
I mean, your statement is still true. In fact you could do it with far fewer tools, it just takes longer. But neither way is “easy”. The path is long, and difficult, and worth it. But you’ll develop the skillset over time.
I suspect Keith’s first project didn’t look like this either!
Around that 5:25 mark, I really love that idea of the offset with a piece of paper. It's little things like this tip that make the internet so great!! Thanks gents!
Glad it was helpful!
The attention to detail & workmanship is just at another level. Show how much you love what you guys are doing. Keep it up
Thank you very much!
The level of craftsmanship and attention to detail in this video is amazing. Great to watch and learn from true professionals in the field. Outstanding work!
Awesome, thank you! I SUPER appreciate your kind words and the comment. It means a great deal and is very humbling.
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking I agree with Kaleb, really awesome craftsmanship and precision. I truly enjoyed watching this video. Thanks a lot for sharing!
The master at his art once again. Good to see a new video KJ! Looks fantastic!
Much appreciated!! Hope to have some more videos soon 👍🏻
Absolutely FANTASTIC! I love the scribe technique. I would love a video covering the under mount LED lighting!
Thanks Ben! Unfortunately, I’m no electrician, so there won’t be any videos documenting electrical work
Congrats on the course launch! I know you've been working really hard in it based on what you have said in the Shop Sounds podcast!
Thanks so much, Cameron!! Definitely some long hours in and out of the shop, but I'm really proud of what we've been able to create!
I should’ve apprenticed with a woodworker instead of going to university and law school. At the end of my day all I’ve done is move paper from one side of my desk to the other. Maybe it’s not too late! You guys hiring an apprentice? Haha…
😂 Well, somedays I just move pieces of wood from one bench to another and get absolutely nothing done. It's not always as glamorous as it appears on RUclips 😜
There's a lot of people regret going to college
I think you’re missing the point. I don’t have any regrets. My career is very fulfilling. It’s just a comment about being able to build something with your hands.
Hey all the wood shop I know cannot find employees here in Georgia
@@arthurford829If this is the case you have expressed yourself very poorly, sorry to say.
Great work guys. The lighting adds 1000% to the finished piece. Love it ❤❤❤
Thanks Richard! We appreciate it 👍🏻
This was a beautiful build, i am glad to see you on RUclips again. Please keep the videos coming! Thankyou!
Thank you! Will do!
Just bought your Modern Wood Academy class. Can't wait to learn your ways! There are a few things, in particular, I hope to learn from you. Honestly one of the best and most precise woodworkers out there. I'm super pumped!
Oh awesome!! Thanks for the support and the kind words, Rick! I’ll definitely be there to answer any questions you may have along the way during the course and with the build!
As always, Another stunning job!!!! Well done Sir…The attention to detail is amazing 🤩 Overall, love the work you and your partner have done.
Thank you so much 😀
Wow... That is beautiful! 😍 So much precision and the end result is so clean and professional looking. You all did such a marvelous job! 👏
Thank you so much! We greatly appreciate the kind words! 🙏😃
Absolutely beautiful! I love seeing a color other than white nowadays! The contrast to the wood was perfect 👌🏻
Thanks so much, Mike! We really like the color scheme the client chose as well.
Amazing Keith! I love the effort in the filming and editing of the video. That built in is a masterpiece! It really makes me want to set up my game!
Thanks a lot, Manny! I really appreciate the kind words! 🙏🏻🙌🏻
Those look absolutely perfect. I learnt so many great tips from this, makes me feel almost ready to try and build a smaller-scale version at my place! Amazing work, all!
You can do it! Thanks so much for the kind words!
I am an apprentice cabinetmaker in Australia and I'd been searching around trying to find someone who scribes 'properly'. I always had the idea that there would be a solution like this for high quality projects, and now I've got an idea to bring back to the boss!
seriously awesome fit with the benchtops and filler face frames.
Thank you so much! And I'm so glad this was helpful. I've used that scribe technique in the past cutting 2 parallel slots the full length of my scribe strip and also a groove up my cabinet side on the table saw. Then I just used regular wood biscuits and the same scribing process.
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking most of our work is whiteboard melamine in aus as its much more stable than ply with the humidity (and cheaper), with painted MDF faces or veneered mdf/chipboard.
The only hard part is going to be arguing if it is worth the trouble for cheaper/low-profit projects.
These same style of fillers we usually pocket hole or screw right through from the back and/or glue.
My other plan was to start marking cabinet positions on the unseen top of the kicks and move them over accurately the distance of my scribe block/tool, to avoid reassembly but use the same strategy. Unfortunately this means taking the cabinets in and out so I'd much prefer if we got on board with lamello'ing the faces!
@@xesonik2857 The Lamello certainly makes the process easier and more efficient and takes all those steps you mentioned out of the mix.
This is far from boring, thanks for sharing the knowledge really appreciated
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!
Wow you guys did an awesome job! A lot of planing went into this! 😉 congratulations on your launch! 👍🏻I’ll be checking it out! I did miss Jerry tho! 😺Thanks for sharing!
Awesome! Thank you Bill! I greatly appreciate all the support! 👊
Amazing job. Looks beautiful…and congrats on the launch.
Thanks so much! I go that nervous excitement going on! 😂
Holy crap, what a build! Awesome work!!! Learned a lot of tips in the video too, thanks for sharing!!!
That’s great to hear! I really appreciate the comment and the kind words!
That was epic. You are only the second person I've seen use that off set method with the zeta. It's a great trick. I also can't believe you made the time to film it all. I really enjoyed it. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks a lot, Nic. Super appreciate it. 👍
Beautiful, Keith! 😃
You guys did a FANTASTIC work there!!!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks so much! Same to you!
Wow Keith, that looks incredible! Thanks for the video.
Right on! That’s for kind words! 👊🏻
Just watched the video and I love this, looks great. The dado in the counter is a great idea. Tip: for future jobs instead of using a makeshift L bracket above the cabinetry to mount it to the wall just fabricate the backs 1 - 1 1/2" taller than the cabinet. It'll give you a full width strip to work with.
Thanks Andy! And thanks for the tip! 👍
Wow -- massive build and a great result. Nice teamwork on display!
Thanks Curtis! It’s good to have someone else do all the heavy lifting 😜😂
What a Built In ! Love your work, videos and humor. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching, David!! I really appreciate it. We had a great time on this build!
This is exactly the work I do for a living and I can confirm the amount of detail that goes into it is a lot. Especially when you do it all solo like me. I do use a lot of CAD software to plan and keep things organized, and I also do all of my own finishing work.
It's a lot but extremely satisfying and worth it all.
Well said! Definitely easier to manage when you plan it all out ahead of time with accurate drawings and cut lists. Things can get mixed up real quick if you aren't organized!
How much would something like this cost? I'm thinking about having this installed in my apartment, I would only need 50% but not sure where to begin. The cost is going to be a huge factor so was curious. Thanks!
@Jonat2Go Custom stuff like this is going to run a pretty hefty price tag. I don't remember the dimensions of the one in the video, but by looking at it, I would estimate $8k-$12k. Now if you want one half the size, I wouldn't just assume half the cost. That isn't really how these work. For half the size, I would estimate $6k-$9k. This is just for me, and a different builder could be drastically different.
@@flat---line The cubby in question is about 40 in, so it's probably even less than 50% of that since that looks massive. However, thanks for the inside, gives me an idea of how affordable it is. I have a great spot but not sure I have the wallet power for it.
Amazing. Sometimes I think I’m a decent wood worker…then I watch a video like this. You guys are in another level, thanks for sharing!
Wow, thanks! Really appreciate the comment, Josh! We are constantly learning and improving as well. 👊
Me too! It's depressing! Haha! This is fine work and great attention to detail!
@@playhouse888 🙏🏻👊🏻
A great design ad assembly. It looks perfect, which is what it is. Well done to all, and those scribes ....? Wow !
Thanks very much!
You and your buddies did an amazing job Keith, Impressive. Bravo 👏
Thanks so much, Simon! Cheers!
Keith's back! Yes!
Thanks Michael!! Lots going on away from RUclips, so it feels good to be back!
wow that was a behemoth of a cabinet! Great work
Thanks dude!! Almost as heavy as giant block of wood and epoxy! LOL.
Dude! Keith this is great! Now my wife is rolling her eyes because I want to do something similar at my house! Congrats on the launch! I can’t wait to try my hand on that sweeeeet looking console table!
LOL. Sorry to put you in that awkward situation 😜. And it would be great to have you in the console course! Thanks so much for the support!
Thank you. Keith, I love your dynamic for clips.

I wish I would have seen this video before I started my built-ins journey. Lots of great tips and tricks! thank you so much! Amazing work
You are so welcome! Hopefully it will help on your next built-in project 😉💪
Fantastic build as always.
I saw the video and was like “sweet I need to do some cabinets with LEDs” and then I saw the video and once again was humbled by the extreme amount of detail you put into this.
One question, what was the clear coat finish being sprayed onto the oak paneling?
Thanks! It took 10 days to build, 2 days to install and a few more days of prep work. Clear coat was a lacquer.
Wow! Great video. That final shot, those bookshelves look sharp!
Thanks a lot! 💪🏻
Thanks man! 💪🏻
Wow, glad to see you do work in PA! You guys are masters!
Thanks very much!

I'm sure I will enjoy your online seminars. See you there.
I'm curious, are you able to clear $100/hr for each of you while building these projects? They seem quite overbuilt, which is nice, but does it pay? At the end of the day, us cabinet makers need to balance the build quality with the price of the piece to assure we're putting food on the table at least as well as the average handyman!
@@henrysara7716 Fantastic! Thanks Henry!
@@troyfrench9884 We did just fine on this build. Thanks!

I know I am late to the party but I justed wanted to say it is a pleasure to watch experts in a trade do their thing. I have literally no idea what this kind of cabinet will cost, but now I'm looking at my IKEA stuff and wanting to save the pennies to get the real deal installed. So thanks for bankrupting me.
Haha. Thanks very much! Most people don't get to see the amount of work that goes into building a unit like this, so I'm glad I was able to share the process.

Great video! Nice to see so many methods similar to mine even over the pond! Using a second row of bisco’s to support the filler before scribing is time saver, haven’t seen anyone else do that! But I’m surprised at the lack of dust extraction?!
