    Inspired by Matt's videos, I did hidden doors for our hall linen closet and laundry machine closet for a remodel. They open out and have baseboard trim run across the bottom. So I used pivot hinges by Rixson. It took some sketching and fitting, but I was able to have conistent 1/8" gaps all around.

      Do you have the link to the hinges please? We just hired a contractor to do a hidden shelf under the stairs and oh boy he messed up real bad. Now I'm trying to give him suggestions. Please and Thank you.

    “Always use plywood when building a hidden door, because MDF will sag over time.” Then a few scenes later… “this door is made using MDF” lol.

    • @zakiducky
      @zakiducky 3 года назад +7

      Yeah, I noticed most were MDF lol. I guess the plywood comment was intended for _actual_ concealed entrances that are supposed to be truly secret, like the art studio/ semi-panic room behind the bookshelf. Not for typical ‘hidden’ doors that have reveals showing where they are. They’re all beautiful doors regardless, but very few are hidden enough to hide in plain sight from intruders since that’s not the intent 9/10 times.

      Hidden door bookcase, he said.
      Door = not that heavy
      Bookcase = heavy
      Bookcase with books = yea that needs plywood for sure

    • @zakiducky
      @zakiducky 3 года назад +3

      @@qwerty112311 Doors can get surprisingly heavy, too. MDF can be quite heavy as well. But yeah, I totally glossed over the bookshelf part lol. That's gonna be _ridiculously heavy_ when fully loaded, hence the rollers at the open end of the door leaf. That and the 'James Bond' door are probably my favorites, since they are some of the better concealed ones. And there's something very satisfying about a classic door-hidden-in-a-bookshelf situation.

    Did some work in a house here in Austin a while back that had a super cool hidden basement. This basement was probably about 6 to 700 SQ ft so decent size. So one door was a book shelve with a hidden latch in the hallway that opened up to a stair case. The other door to it was in the garage. The corner trim flipped open to reveal the latch then the entire corner opened up. There was also a separate room in the basement with a huge commercial steel door and the walls were all reinforced with sheet metal hidden under the drywall. Kinda made me a little nervous wondering what he used that room for lol

    That was cool. Glad I don't have a place in my house to use one because I imagine it's a very tricky build. I just did a barn door install by framing out a 30"X78" French door to 38"X84" with ripped down 2X6s, dowels and wood glue. The hardware kit was from Amazon and the instructions were pretty vague, so there's a lot of measurements that can go wrong, but I got it done for our new 4 season sunroom upgrade. Great video Matt!!

    • @gizmo5601
      @gizmo5601 3 года назад +7

      He did say that in regard to hidden door book cases. So maybe it’s due to the weight of all the horizontal shelves and structure that makes it prone to sag, not the case with a simple vertical slab door. Makes sense, in my home all my “oak” doors are largely made from fibre/chip board with a pressed foil “veneer” and don’t sag.

    Center pivot systems tend to work the best. I’ve done quite a few over the years and like the ability to have infinite adjustment and load carrying that conventional hinges don’t offer. I fabricated the upper and lower pivots myself and they work flawlessly with well over 2000 lbs of weight in the box. I use only electromagnetic locks on these units. Easy to set up and impossible to open when engaged. The key is to counter stress the back of the cabinet with cables and turnbuckles to counter the torsion of an open face box, which will always be an issue with a wood box.

    Love hidden doors. But I think the only true purpose for a hidden door is to conceal a room or space that is, at best only used in an emergency, aka rarely.
    Anything that is used more frequently will leave behind marks of use. Be that touch points, foot traffic or operating hardware.
    One of my cabin designs calls for a “hidden” bookcase door, to maximize space and hide storage spaces. But the idea is not to keep it secret, but rather to use the bookcase as … well as a shelf where I otherwise would have a normal cabinet door.
    My particular challenge is that the bookcase needs to “lift out” of the row of bookcase sections and then slide over the adjourning panel. So it’s a dual out/side mechanism. And for that I have not yet found good hardware.
