Bob, Great hidden door the design. In this video's ad, at 2:25, you show a well insulated attic. I'd like to see an "how to insulation" tutorial video. Keep up the great work & thanks for the arcade help. All your videos are amazing!
I have to say, I would spot that door for what it is due to the obviously unnecessary gap in the otherwise flat frame around the unit. Of course, I'm a carpenter so I'd probably be more inclined to notice it than others but I would spot it. I would have done this so that _all_ of the visible trim around the bookshelf is attached to the shelf/door instead of the wall. That way, when the door closes, it brings all of the "trim" directly up against the wall itself. As long as the door latches snugly enough and brings the "trim" firmly up against the wall without any obvious gaps between the "trim" and the wall, it will appear that the "trim" is attached to the wall. When the door opens, the trim simply comes away from the wall. This truly hides the fact that it is a door because there is no obvious separation between the shelf and it's "trim" _and_ no obvious separation between the "trim" and the wall which would be a give-away. With all the trim attached to the door and not the wall, when closed, there is no visible reason to assume the trim is not attached to the wall as it would be in any standard cabinet framing technique. Another trick to reduce any chance someone might spot the unit for what it is is to completely fill all of the shelves with books. No "nick-nacks". Also, the latch book (and a few that are next to it) should be books that are far less interesting than Jules Vern. If I saw that hard backed book, I'd be interested in looking at it and that would mean the odds are higher that someone would innocently try to remove and peruse the book thinking it genuine. The latch book should have a title on the spine that is something along the lines of "Advanced Mathematical Concepts In Structural Engineering - 1966" or something like that that almost no one would actually be inclined to attempt to read out of innocent curiosity. Just a few ideas on the subject.
+BigRalphSmith This isn't a James Bond movie. It's an access panel for the utilities. It has to be thought of more as a dual functional door rather than Dr. Evil's secret laboratory. Besides, how are you going to attach trim to the hinge side of the bookcase and not rip it off when you open the door?
Carl Jr Relax, Carl. You sound really defensive and there's no need for that. It's just a home carpentry project. He was satisfied with the result and that's fine. All I did was point out that someone who does finishing carpentry work such as myself would probably spot it and I suggested some things I might have done differently. That's all. I bet if you really thought about it, you could come up with at least two different ways to do it but personally, I would use what's called a "double articulated" hinge. They are designed to allow deeply recessed doors to move straight forward out of their recesses before swinging to the side. They are large hinges that can mount inside the casement or even on the other side of the wall. There are even "sliding" double articulated hinges that accommodate extremely deep recesses. You could even build such a system yourself out of lumber. The most common example of a double articulated hinge that I know of is what they use on a flat screen TV wall mount. I can think of yet another method that even uses cheap regular door hinges and then there are "track" hinges etc. but you get the idea. All you need to do is use your imagination and that's what projects like this one are all about.
LucasLeArtist Well i mean they are doing something more productive and good for them selves and im hear in a secret room being more anti-social. Please lets not discuss... or dont get mad.

I will have this one day, but I will use a book that is already damaged. I have an old dictionary (1952) that's missing several letters and pages, so I'm keeping it for this project :D
Looks great. I would suggest moulding , that matches the moulding already on the wall, attaching it to the bookcase itself and overlapping the opening to hide the cutout. More ascetically pleasing as well.
Love the learning opportunity seeing the mistake and the fix by cutting off the corner. You have to learn from others’ mistakes because life’s too short to make them all yourself.
Super Cool. Well done it is a really good Idea and well built. I like the way you show your mistakes and miss calculations and show them as part of the learning process. I think too many people just hide or ignore their mistakes to make them look more professional. To me mistakes are good if you learn from them
Also, since we are all going to make mistakes, learning how to work through the solution to them is an essential skill if we are going to actually make anything ourselves. It's not enough to know how to make good joins or fit hinges correctly. We also need to know how to work with mistakes to end up with something useful
I agree. You can read all about a subject until you can quote it chapter and verse like some people can with books like the bible. Me, I take the the Indiana Jones. Snr. Approach, in that the point in writing things in a book is so you don't have to remember them. When I was in college I could hand in pieces to my teacher's that resembled war and peace. Other guys could only hand in an A4 page at a push. They asked me how I could write so much. To me it was easy. I catalogued all my mistakes, there were plenty of them. Showed how I made them and how I was correcting them and finishing the piece. A stupid mistake was reworked as a design feature. This all goes to prove your learning and can think on your feet.
This would be so cool when a new person moves into the house, and they see the book case. They'd move the books and then get to the latch book and see the whole things open and be like "no fucking way..."
+Tre ore nononononono you open the door to see DARKNESS! And there should be a wired screen at the very back that suddenly turns on automatically from the latch. The screen glitches and reveals a voice "W-e-l-co-me-" in a really glitchy voice. That would be interesting.
Aliko Chan Would be interesting, but not the most boring thing in the world (The guy I replied to was thinking along my lines, super awesome secret door, opens onto some super boring room hehe)
+A Cat Last time I tried making something out of wood I nailed the board to the table, cuts all over my arm from the saw and, a hurt finger and, I ended up with a wobbly table. So never again

As an avid reader my, heart broke when he cut the book.
Let's be real... it helps promote the audible ad
This was great, I also love to see mistakes and potential problems that may come when doing projects.
I need to hire someone to do this.
You can hire him, that's what the people that have this did. He made it for a client.
+Landen Keller Cool
no he made it for a friend it was probably a favour
me to must have
I Like To Hire People To Make Stuff For Me
Props for taking the time to save the book inside. 👍👍👍
I thought that secret doors are only in fairy tales now I know it is REAL
+Rinnie rainbow live What kind of fairy tales are you reading?!
+magnumjgjg er narnia...
lol, I was just kidding
LOL so did I
me too
In my future home, I want to have one of these that goes into a secret library.
I want my library door to look like this from the inside, so the whole room is just bookshelves.
Or a secret torture chamber
@@ARealTaco bruh 😂
I have an attic in my bedroom so this is perfect for that
same but i want my library to be big 😩👌
its good for a *Zombie Apocylapse*
only if it had a metal door or zombie proof door right
Not really
Beast Killer more like the purge
+Alex Garza that's what i thought
actually
an unbreakable metal door is better
Tiffany Pink ur right
Bob,
Great hidden door the design.
BigRalphSmith I agree with you but the kid is suppose to find it. if it was to be completely secret it would be a good idea.
BigRalphSmith Yes, I would also go about it as you have said but as an engineer I would just have to take a look at your proposed book.
I am going out of town
+BigRalphSmith This isn't a James Bond movie. It's an access panel for the utilities. It has to be thought of more as a dual functional door rather than Dr. Evil's secret laboratory.
Besides, how are you going to attach trim to the hinge side of the bookcase and not rip it off when you open the door?
Carl Jr
Relax, Carl.
All you need to do is use your imagination and that's what projects like this one are all about.
clean wood work ,amazing ideas , awesome secret room ,and classic way to open the door .That is the best secret room video I have ever seen
I would make this but I’m 10 so I live with my mum and she would probably not let me cut the wall

Healerr when you move out of your house I highly doubt you will own a house right away maybe 10 years after you move out life isn’t that easy.
*shouldn't let you

I also have one of these just that instead of disguising it as a bookshelf I disguised it as a door
This is so cool Bob! I think everyone has at some point wished they had one of these secret rooms. The book latch is perfect!
This is wicked cool. Everyone wants this in their house!
I've always dreamed of one of them!
having one*
All my friends are getting girlfriends and getting ripped af and i'm here learning how to make a hidden door...
HAHAHAHAH Feel u
Raveena Samoedjh sadly :/ lol
spide Cooper Your friends sound boring. Building a hidden door is way more interesting than "getting ripped af".
LucasLeArtist Well i mean they are doing something more productive and good for them selves and im hear in a secret room being more anti-social. Please lets not discuss... or dont get mad.
***** lol thanks man XD
I’m so jealous of you guys being able to make all kinds of stuff. I just don’t have the resources to do the extra things I love to do. Woodwork!!!
It would be funny if you played hide and seek with someone who doesn't know that it's a secret door.
My brain just blew up :0
Maaike van Dierendonck now you must change your profile picture to a trallface
It be asks one at first then later u will get bored then they will never find u then u have to give up and then they ask where were u hiding then u play another round then the same thing happen until they found ur hiding spot

I remember my first time watching this and I instantly subscribed. I honestly think you deserve a million more subscribers, you are so good at what you do and you always produce quality contents. Thank you bob 💗👏🏻
+Dolores Haze thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
Perhaps the coolest project on RUclips!!! Love your show Bob.
Thanks so much!!
as a literature lover, my heart cried when you cut that book. awesome project tho
hey, you can get a really bad book that you do not like and use it for that
I'll never understand why an $11 reprint from Barnes and Noble can cause such mental anguish to people, but to each his own.
I love books too, and the first day I'd heard of a thing like this, my heart cried because I chose art over woodwork.
it's not about the money.. it's about what's inside :')
I will have this one day, but I will use a book that is already damaged. I have an old dictionary (1952) that's missing several letters and pages, so I'm keeping it for this project :D
Apart from the sacrilege that was destroying a book; I love it!
Now I can finally win a game of hide-and-seek!
Hah ikr
Yeah lol
***** Me and my uncle are actually building this in his new house :)
Yep!
Looks great. I would suggest moulding , that matches the moulding already on the wall, attaching it to the bookcase itself and overlapping the opening to hide the cutout. More ascetically pleasing as well.
+Gayle Posey this has been covered in multiple other comments. The door swings outward so trim won't work.
Whoever his wife is, she is SERIOUSLY lucky
Lilly Pinto hopefully not the chick eyeing the other dude down like he’s a snack.
I know, right😊
he made it for his friend you egg
Nah. Just because someone can built a bookshelf like that, doesn't mean it's lucky to marry them.
Love the learning opportunity seeing the mistake and the fix by cutting off the corner.
You have to learn from others’ mistakes because life’s too short to make them all yourself.
im a little horrified at what you did to that poor little innocent book 0_o
I am sooo going to build on of those for my house... in the futute
Renata Bubblegum same here. in like 30 years XD I'm only 13
Same here guys me 13 btw
Rudra Singh YEAH 13 SQUAD
Add me hahaha
Im 13 also but what you have to remember is you wont be able to afford this most of us kids will nit get a house because of inflated realastate prices
Super Cool. Well done it is a really good Idea and well built. I like the way you show your mistakes and miss calculations and show them as part of the learning process. I think too many people just hide or ignore their mistakes to make them look more professional. To me mistakes are good if you learn from them
Thanks so much!! I'm really glad those things are helpful, and don't just make me look like a dope :)
I wonder how many secret door bookcases I've passed in my life 😂
Look up the black cat mini mart / night club in Bali
Look up the black cat mini mart / night club in Bali
tip: if you wanna figure out which book is the lever, it's always the red one
All of them 🙂
@@jackreacher4297 thats just called a speakeasy. There is a whole genre of bars with hidden entries all over the world
This would be so cool when a new person moves into the house, and they see the book case. They'd move the books and then get to the latch book and see the whole things open and be like "no fucking way..."
You can hide like a chest in the secret room. Just to like add to everything
+Aleks Skhopyjk Even worse, it opens to a room with a single lawn chair, and a light bulb
Tre ori ah wait...you open the door to just find and indent wall
You could turn it into a panic room! I might do that if I have a weekend off

Supernatural!!
oh mcjesus will you marry me???
I understood that reference
Me taking notes:
Step 1) Get a workshop.
Step 2) Buy tens of thousands of dollars worth of tools.
Step 3) Pay a day laborer $74 to do it.
1. Had a workshop
2. Had thousands of dollars of tools
3. Thought of this but didn't know where to begin
4. Lost everything to foreclosure.
there are great places called maker spaces where you can sometimes use tools for free or pay for a small membership and use there workshop!
@@marccolten9801 ouch
or you can rent the tools from home depot for a decent price
A huge help would have been properly planning this out. It works the way he did it, but its shoddy as hell and poorly planned.
I appreciate the editing on this. 10 min video for such a build is good stuff!
this is awesome! I'm impressed! clever! I'm assuming that this is a "safe" room?
Thanks! No, just a hidden play room for their son when he gets a little older.
Ooohhh... I see what You did here. (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Nicely done video! I love that you had mistakes and talked through them. Most people make videos like they are an expert, but you explained how to fix things. Thank you!!
I CANNOT believe I am just now seeing your video! I have been working on a similar project in my basement for over a month! and I'm still not done... I smiled the entire way through your video as I have run into every single problem you did. Wish me luck to eventually finish :-)
