  • I would recommend you watch the whole video before attempting! Then refer to the video as needed. (**click show more**)
This model is the HP Envy M7-k211dx from late 2014.
    This is the 17' version.
Taking it apart gives you access to the ram, wifi card, hard drive, motherboard, cooler and more...
I would NOT recommend that you use a powered screwdriver to take this machine apart or put it back together. I am very familiar with the screwdriver shown in the video and I can use it confident that I will not accidentally strip and screws.
    Thanks for Watching!!!

Agree, they should have placed a little access door like many others do. I'm experienced and still want no part of this for a 4GB upgrade.

Excellent work. This is what a good instructional video SHOULD look like. My only suggestion would be some side lighting to illuminate the inside of the case and those ribbon connections, and if possible, close ups of the unlatch and disconnect process

One thing is for sure, HP is no longer tinkerer-friendly: a MacBook pro aside this was the most annoying HD replacement so far.

@5:58, use a guitar pick, perfect for separating plastics and won't damage anything. Also, you are removing the palmrest incorrectly. It is intended to Z-fold on, like the old IBM "Butterfly" keyboards. They way you are doing risks the connectors or cables breaking. To reattach, on the palmrest, flip the connector cables so they stick out beyond the edge of the palmrest, and attach the hinge-side cables first. Then Z-fold the palmrest back and attach the front side ribbons. Easy.

To anyone watching, I'd say that the best course of action would be to take it apart like this, put a M.2 drive in the M.2 slot on the motherboard, and call it day. You can, if you really want to just deck this laptop out, replace the HDD with another SSD, and then replace the optical drive with the original HDD or another SSD. It's really up to you. I just thought that it might help anyone that could possibly be watching this now or later on.

Thank you and God bless, I never would have got the machine open without wrecking it but for this video. All I want to do is add some memory, so why does HP make it so difficult? In the good old days there would a small panel on the underside secured with just one screw that gave you access to the memory modules >:-(

Whoa, I just did this myself on a "refurbished" Envy M7 k211 DX laptop I bought online that arrived with defective wifi (how they could've missed this I don't know)....Rather than return it with all the associalted hassles I decided to replace the card myself. Man, was I surprised by this discon-bobulated setup. I followed the directions in their maintenance manual to get at the card but it was still fairly difficult. Wish I had seen this video first. I'm still waiting on the card.....

Well, I'll give it a shot but I really think the problem is the hardware. It actually displayed a list of network one time but since has reverted to 'dead' again I've enabled, it disabled it and so on. It likely was returned to HP for this problem. Just my luck.....

HP built the Envy as a throw away machine and they did not want to make it easy to repair. I have one of these a HP ENVY M7-K2111dx , 12gb , 1TB hard drive 5400rpm slow and 17 inch screen. It was made in 2015 and really needs a SSD with windows 10 to make it usable. I don't understand how a laptop name I7 comes with two cores. I was given to me by the owner who could not get it to boot. It is slow compared to my DELL Latitude with 4 cores, 13.3 inch screen. It was also built in 2015 but the hard drive can be replaced by removing 1 screw and sliding out the hard drive and installing a 2.5 inch SSD. The ram and wireless cards are under removable slots with 4 screws to repair. The only use these slow laptops have are adding Google Home and sending movies to my tv. They both have dvd burners if you need to make an audio or video cd. I just bought a AMD 5500U , 8gb ram, 512mb SSD. 17 inch screen and I hoped it would be fast enough for Davincia Resolve and 80% of games. I should have bought the 5700U with 8 cores 16 threads but for 900 you can get AMD with a gaming card and 16 gb of ram. I will probrably buy a new laptop on black friday 2023 because AMDs new chipset coming out by then will get over 60 fps in AAA games without a physical graphics card.

Thanks for the video, and it has become much easier for me to find these hidden screws. I would like to thank you for showing us how to do this. I have a problem with the cooler. Several months ago It transfers typically too much warm to the keyboard in the place where it is installed and I think that it should not be so. I will try to clean the cooler, but I have doubts about how to do it.
which of your experience can you advise: how to upgrade the HP Envy m7 Laptop? Or what are you not advised to do?

If I want to access the keyboard of a HP ENVY Notebook - m7-n101dx model, can I do that from above, as you did, without having to disassemble a lot of the computer components? Have you disassembled the screen on this laptop before? Do you have to get under the keyboard to take the hinges off or can you take it off after you remove the battery and the two black pieces that hold the feet? A video of you disassembling the screen would be nice! :) Thank you. this was a very good video.

    • @-garrett
      @-garrett  8 лет назад

+Peter Suman You must remove the whole keyboard assembly to remove the screen, as that is the only way to access the hinges. If you are trying to further take apart the screen assembly, (on touch models only) I believe that you can remove it by pulling with suction cups, and when finished, will snap back in place. I have never tried to take apart the screen, but once, the laptop got dropped, and the all front glass of the screen assembly started to pop loose from the back plastic silver housing. For this reason, I believe that the screen is only held in place with (presumably plastic) clips. If you do end up trying to take the screen apart your self, use little force, because of the all glass screen and bezel. Hope this helped!

    • @d3n4c3
      @d3n4c3 8 лет назад

Make sure you've got all the screws out. You take a credit card/plastic card and work into the gap on the sides then work it around both sides and bottom of the case of the laptop to pop It free from where it snaps into the case. It's not as hard as it sounds. If it's giving you a lot of resistance then you've missed a screw most likely.

My I suggest also using non-marring tools on your next dissemble? So much easier then regular screw drivers and (if used right) it won't scratch or break the plastic. This also includes a replacement tool so you don't have to use a credit card or plastic card for the top cover. Looks like there might be enough room since the drive bay is at the front. Thanks!!

    • @-garrett
      @-garrett  8 лет назад +1

+John Anderson You would only have to remove two ribbon cabels. The ribbon cable that connects the drive to the motherboard, and a ribbon cable that streches over the drive. By remove I mean unplugging just from the motherboard. At 8:09 in the video you can see the ribbon cable that streches over the drive, and also the ribbon cable that connects the drive to the motherboard. Since these are both ontop, motherboard removal is not needed and can be done easily (as long as you can get the keyboard trey off!) Good Luck!

    • @johnanderson3652
      @johnanderson3652 8 лет назад +2

+Andy R It's pretty easy. Start by downloading the Clonezilla software from www.clonezilla.org/downloads/download.php?branch=stable
Assuming you are working on an HP Envy m7, select "AMD64" for cpu architecture and "ISO" for file type, then click on "download".
Put a writable CD or DVD in the optical drive.
Right click on the downloaded ISO file and select "Burn Disk Image".
After the CD/DVD is finished, connect the new SSD to the laptop using a USB connector.
Boot from the new CD/DVD (You might need to change the boot order in your BIOS).
The CD/DVD will boot into a setup program for Clonezilla.
The first screen that comes up will be a choice for Clonezilla mode. You can just take the default. I choose "Other modes" and select the "1024 x 768" mode (just because it's easier on the eyes).
On the next screen, choose your preferred language.
Next screen - choose "Don't touch keymap".
Next screen - choose "Start Clonezilla"
      Next screen - choose "device-device"
Next screen - choose "Beginner mode"
      Next screen - choose "disk_to_local_disk"
Next screen - choose the disk that you want to copy from. Be very careful. If you choose wrong, you will destroy your system. If you are working on a typical HP Envy M7, there should only be two choices here. If you are not sure which disk to choose, disconnect the new SSD and reboot from the CD/DVD. Follow the above instructions to get to this same screen again. This time there should only be one disk to choose, the current system disk. Remember (or write down) the information you see for this disk so you can select it later. Reboot from the CD/DVD again, follow the instructions to get to this screen, and select the correct disk.
Next screen - choose the target disk (the new SSD). There should only be one disk in the list at this point.
Next screen - accept default (usually "skip checking")
Clonezilla will then display the command that it is about to run. Hit "Enter" to continue.
Clonezilla will then examine the disk to be copied and ask you if you are sure you want to do this. It will ask you twice. You will need to answer with "y" and hit "Enter" each time. Read carefully the information that Clonezilla shows. If you say yes, and have chosen the wrong disks, your system will be useless.
Next, Clonezilla will create the new partitions on the target disk (the new SSD). Then it will ask you if you want to clone the bootloader. Select "y" and hit "Enter"
Now sit back and relax. Watch the progress bars (one for each partition).
When the cloning is complete, Clonezilla will tell you about using "Poweroff" and "Reboot". Hit "Enter" to continue.
      Select "Poweroff" and hit "Enter".
Your new SSD is now ready to use. Replace your old HDD with the new SSD and reboot. Should be all set. Save the old HDD until you are sure everything is working correctly.
This procedure is for use when the SSD is at least as big as the old HDD, and will not work if the SSD is smaller. I understand that adjustments can be made for larger SSD's, but I have never done that.
      Hope this helps.

@@nkarim4979 to clear up what happened, my fan died and I had to replace that. But I didn't need to mess with the heat sink itself or the CPU/GPU. What I did didn't require any thermal paste.
I'd say pop open the laptop and make sure the vents are clean and clear (mine were crammed with nastiness that I couldn't see from the outside). If the fan is working properly and it's still running hot then you might want to open task manager and see how much of a load it's using. If the CPU is running a high percent of its capacity it absolutely will heat up.

I actually made the change over to windows 10,and I gotta say its smooth and lightning fast, windows 8.1 was a bit confusing for me coming from windows 7.question how well do you game on this machine?

+Andy R While I do very little gaming on this computer, what I have seen is that it handles things much better than any integrated graphics. That being said, this computer is not going to be a gaming "monster" due to the lack of a quad core processor and mid-ranged (for laptops) gpu performance. Happy to hear that your Windows 10 experience was smooth, mine was anything but that!

Hey there, I'm thinking of buying this exact pc burbs refurbished HP model. Do you recommend this pc?

    • @-garrett
      @-garrett  8 лет назад

+Jose Herrera The computer's hardware is great! If you plan on running windows 10 on it i would definitely wait (If you plan on buying model M7-k211dx.) Windows 10 runs quite poorly on that model, but all of the problems are driver related problems that will hopefully get resolved. If you plan on running Windows 8.1 it is great. While the driver issues will probably get resolved, right now it is not worth your time and frustration trying to get Windows 10 running smoothly. Hope this helps!

Not as easy as some. Kind of silly that they made it this way though. Kind of a pain to access the ram and the hard drive. The hardest part was accessing the screws in my opinion. Having them hidden under the feet and under the silver cover was kind of annoying.

And previously removed the small broadhead screws that hold the optical drive bay on the form factor, when this is exactly the problem I am having... trying to find the correct size screw driver tip to remove them. The HP Service Manual states that a P1 and P0 are required, but neither work.

that type of memory used? model? the KTH-X3CL/8G ? ddr3l or ddr3?

    • @-garrett
      @-garrett  9 лет назад

Daniel León The stock type of memory used is (1) Samsung 8gb stick 1600MHz DDR3 and (2) Micron 4gb stick 1600MHz DDR3. I replaced the Micron 4gb stick with a PNY 8gb 1600MHz DDR3 MODEL: MN8192SD3-1600. This laptop does not use DDR3L. I do believe that the MN8192SD3-1600 stick should work, however, as I do not have that part on hand I cannot tell you for sure.

So, I installed the evo 850 250Gb instead of DVD with the caddy specially designed to fit. And I cloned the system with Data Migration tool. Is there any way I can boot from SSD in DVD slot? (because I don't trust myself wit such a delicate thing as disassembling of laptop)

    • @-garrett
      @-garrett  8 лет назад

+Александр Моисеенко (sterpazook) Yes, there is. First, shut the computer down. Turn it back on and as soon as you press the power button, press the escape key continually until you see a screen with options. For my model, I press F9 for the boot manager (It may be different for you model, just look for "Boot Device Options" and press the key it say) When you enter the boot device options, look for "Windows Boot manager" OR "Samsung SSD 850 EVO". To always boot from the SSD you must go into the BIOS Setup and change the boot order.

+Александр Моисеенко (sterpazook) Just a word of caution... The sata connector that connects the DVD drive to the motherboard is only SATA 2 not the faster SATA 3 that the Hard Drive connects to. It will still work, and in reality, you may not even notice a difference, but just putting that out there if you encounter any problems while trying to do this. Also, the DVD drive uses a "slim sata" power connector. MAKE SURE that the caddy/adapter you purchase adapts the "slim sata" to the normal sized SATA that all SSD's and HDD's use. It looks like the one you linked to does this, so if you buy that one, you will be set.

Hey what's up,im planning on upgrading to an ssd soon, this 5400 rpm hardrive causes alot of slow downs,I have 2 questions,1 is there an empty hardrive slot inside where I can connect the ssd,2 or can I just remove my dvd drive, buy a caddy, and replace the dvd drive with the ssd from there.thanks a million bud.

    • @-garrett
      @-garrett  8 лет назад

+Andy R Unlike older models, this model does not have a second hard drive bay. You may be able to take out the dvd drive and replace it with a hard drive catty, but there would be two issues. One is that the dvd drive connects to the motherboard using a "slim" SATA power port. While there are adapters, it could be difficult fitting into a hard drive catty that goes where the optical drive is meant to go. Second, you will have a gaping hole where the dvd drive was. Hope I could help!

hi,I took my hopes away,I thought It was much easier than that, I looked on Amazon and I saw a bunch of caddies and ssds for is laptop. in my head it was just as simple as taking out the DVD drive installing the Caddy and then installing the SSD. I have looked on Google many times for a step-by-step on how to remove the DVD drive and replace with an SSD but to no avail. please tell me if you had to upgrade the hard drive on this laptop what would you do? Thanks, I appreciate all your info as I am new to this laptop and don't know too much about it.

    • @-garrett
      @-garrett  8 лет назад

+Andy R If you want to upgrade to a SSD, you should put it in the place of the hard drive. I have upgraded the stock 1 TB hard drive on this laptop to a 500 GB Samsung 850 evo. The Samsung SSD came with disk cloning software, but did not come with a USB to SATA adapter, which is needed for disk cloning. if you are thinking about buying a ssd, I would highly recommend getting either a Samsung 850 evo or 850 pro. The only difference between the evo and pro is the pro is slightly faster and can handle more writes. The evo comes with a 5 year warranty, while the pro comes with a 10 year warranty. Any ssd will fit in place of the hard drive and no adapter is needed once the drive is installed in the laptop. (a USB to SATA adapter is needed for disk cloning only)

man,i really appreciate your help,i was so lost at first.you sir are very intelligent, with your help ill do this in no time,so i have a few questions, how much are those ssds?also are the ssds worth the memory downgrade?and from your experience, did the laptop receive a noticeable performance upgrade with the ssd?last question, about the cloning process, can you shed a little bit of light for me on this process.thanks i owe you alot bro.

    • @-garrett
      @-garrett  8 лет назад

+Andy R The 850 pro is always going to be more expensive. The 850 evo starts at 69:99 for 120 GB and goes up all the way to $617.99 for 2 TB. Going on Amazon and searching for Samsung 850 EVO will let you see all the different capacities and prices for the drive. The 850 PRO starts at 89.99 for 120 GB and goes up all the way to $874 for 2 TB. Searching amazon for Samsung 850 PRO lets you see all the different prices and capacities for the drive. I think that SSD's are worth the memory downgrade because they are more reliable and faster than standard Hard Drives. In the HP Envy M7-k211dx that I own, I have seen a significant performance boost in speed, after installing a Samsung 850 Evo 500 GB drive. For data cloning, the Samsung SSDs come with smart software. Lets say you have a 1 TB hard drive and want to clone it to a 500 GB ssd. As long as the 1 TB hard drive has less than 500 GB on it, you can transfer the data. You will need a USB to SATA adapter so that you can plug the SSD into the computer for data migration. Because the software erases the disk you are transferring from, ONLY the SSD that you transferred the data onto will be boot-able, and the Hard Drive where you had the Windows OS, and all your personal files will have nothing on it. Basically it moves the data rather than cloning it.

Unfortunately, I cannot find specific specs being that that model is now two models outdated (Soon to be three). However I can remember that it was very similar to the M7-k211dx with dedicated graphics and a haswell processor. Even if you can find it, you will have to purchase a ribbon cable to hook the drive up. The M7-k211dx was a big design change from the model before it, being that you would not have to take the whole thing apart to access things like ram and hard drives.
