Hi Andrew (and Cat), THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO. I have two of these exact same laptops, and the problem has been the old HP curse of the "broken left hinge". I have never seen such a great and thorough breakdown of the J020dx... they both work wonderfully; the only problem is when you open them the part where the hinge is, it's broken so it starts to pull apart. And yet they still work perfectly. But now I can do all the wonderful cleaning you have done, to every part I can. That always adds life to a pc. Plus watching how you would not mess with the glue; I know exactly what I have to do to fix those parts. I am so grateful. Thank you for an excellent video tutorial done with patience and lots of love. I will let you know how they come out in a couple of weeks when I fix them. Maybe I'll post a tiny video to show you how they came out. Respect Andrew. And ps, they really are great for anything including gaming. I'm very glad I didn't get rid of them before seeing this video. Extremely helpful. Thanks..Gman
I have an HP Envy 17.5” and I absolutely love mine with its complete aluminum casing for help with cooling and just everything about it I love. Still as fast as the day I got it 3 years ago.
@@RaffyART1995 I do on occasion. Mostly for emulation and remote play and movies. Other than that it's in a case most of the time. I'm upgrading soon once the ZenBook 17 fold comes out this month.
Nice upgrades :) Personally, with this laptop, there is the option of three drives, so the best option is 1x mSATA SSD (mSATA was accessible when the bottom case was removed), 1x programs SSD, and 1x data HDD (2TB seems the best - or at least 1TB, anyway). Go for 256GB mSATA if you only want one OS, or 512GB mSATA to dual boot, and have the OS'es on the one disk only. That means you can keep the fully working DVD drive - as some people (especially myself) still use DVDs and CDs, it is a shame that modern laptops no longer have DVD drives.
@@FR4M3Sharma Unfortunately indeed! A lot of modern day laptops, and even modern desktops, do not have DVD drive built into them, so the ones that have the DVD drive as an option are more worth buying to those who still use physical media. My next PC, I have to spend £130 on a case because it is one of the only ones to support DVD drive, if I didn't care about the DVD drive then my case could probably cost about £50 or £60.
Edit... I managed to get PC Case, "Phanteks Enthoo Pro", for just under £110. This is almost double price of normal case, but I keep DVD-ROM or even Blu-Ray ROM support.
IMO, those mSATA ports are a great addition. This means a better solution would have been: 512GB mSATA SSD for both OS'es (Windows & Linux) 1TB 2.5 SSD for programs and games (for both OS'es) 2TB 2.5 HDD for general data such as music, photos, videos, game recordings, etc This then leaves 4th disk slot for CD-ROM, so that *CD-ROM does not need to be removed!*
One lesson I learnt when installing Windows and Ubuntu on separate drives: disable the other drive when installing each OS, otherwise the bootloader can end up on the wrong drive! Do you update the BIOS to the latest version when you restore these laptops?
Hi bro, when i do dual or multi OS i always remove the other HDD/SSD physically from the laptop, its safer. Also if the bios is outdated then I do update

Nice. I'm trying to do a mini project on my 10year old laptop too. But for a 10 year old laptop, I have to really watch how much I spend for repairs. Because even the lowest budget computer right now is probably better than my 4gb ram, intel 2 duo core laptop. Although I already have a more up to date laptop and I'll most likely not ever use this old laptop often, since I'm learning how to fix hardware, I'm making sure to take this opportunity to tinker with it. I found an old random 500GB hdd in a drawer in my living room. It's not mines. It has some disk errors, with some research I was able to troubleshoot and get it working again (the user folder indicates that it's my nephews haha). I swapped out my 300GB hdd that ran a bootlegged slow and out of date win7 (pc originally came with vista) with this new hdd and installed Unbuntu. Such a huge difference! Haha. Runs alot faster and smoother than the out of date bootlegged win7. BUT it's not ssd fast, so I want to upgrade this. I still have to watch my repair/upgrade budget. Although I want to have moderate ssd space, it doesnt make sense to break my budget for it, especially since it's a laptop I'm not going to seriously use. Instead of a 500GB ssd for an affordable $50+ (cyber monday), I'm going to settle for 250gb for half the price (or even go cheaper for a 120gb ssd). Clone the hhd onto the ssd for faster booting and keep the hhd for storage. Hybrid action. So far, physical parts I've bought for physical damage repair was a little under $50 ( LCD bezel, back cover). Theres also a major issue of the battery being dead and not able to charge. But that is just too damn costly for a new one ($80 to over $130). I will just have to source a used or try an alternative repair, which I'm excited to do. Meanwhile the laptop can just run while corded. Another stupidly costly item that I want to upgrade is the RAM. Laptops currently has 4gb of ddr2, I want to bring that up to 8gb, it was a bit annoying as lag was noticible when I loaded a few apps and browsers (because i need to fill out my dual monitor space). Why does outdated RAM have to cost so much. At over $120 for a 2x4gb set, that pretty much almost breaks my budget. But for the sake of practice and satisfaction of reaping and improving something I'm going to do it! Watching you take it apart, made me decide I'll have to give it a deep clean too, as it did pick up a lot of dust. I'm excited for this project, but I hope it goes well since ive never done anything like this before lol.
For a Core 2 Duo laptop you have to be careful. Core 2 Duo laptops are still OK, but getting on a bit, and as you say have DDR2 RAM instead of DDR3. Also most motherboards max out of 4GB, with some early ones maxing out at 2GB, and 4GB DDR2 memory modules are as expensive as hell. With current pricing, instead of trying to do 8GB DDR2 + SSD, you're probably better off getting a 1st - 4th gen Intel Core i series laptop with DDR3 support.

Hi bro, hinges are pretty hard to fix in some cases, if is in the bottom side than you can stick the small screw bolt in the plastic but using super glue gel, not a classic super glue. Have you thought about including Cinebench, Blender, and/or 3DMark tests to your videos? I think it would be interesting to see some synthetic benchmarks.
Nice spot! That should have had a 512GB mSATA drive, for both OSes, meaning two 2.5in drives could still be used for programs and data on the two standard drive bays. No need for CD-ROM adapter, so you can keep the CD-ROM - this is a big selling point as a lot of laptops (and even computers!) do not have CD-ROM drive anymore.
Hi bro, This laptop has space for 2 HDD/SSD, during the video i use it one by one because one of the disk cables is missing, i order it but it didn't arrive on time when i do the video
In which case, it would have been better to use mSATA SSD (OS) + SATA SSD (programs) + SATA HDD (data) + ODD for physical media. With a decent size SSD, you can dual boot without any issues, e.g. my HP ZBook 17 G1 has 512GB mSATA for Windows 7 & 10, 1TB SSD for programs/games, and 2TB HDD for data. It also has an optical drive.

I am getting my hands on a HP ENVY 17-j150la today, seems slightly different from what I seen compared to yours. But I am taking a gamble on this one because all I know is the guy did a fresh install & it runs very slow & sometimes crashes. I suspect that maybe the CPU fan has failed, that would mean it is always throttling till the heat becomes so much it crashes. That would make sense. Another theory is if the hdd is failing... Or something has gone wonky with the motherboard & I'm going to have a miserable time with it... A ram stick could even have gone bad.... It's kinda a crap shoot for me, but I am getting it for $175 CAD ($145 USD) & in this current market used it would likely normally sell for double the price at a min. My hopes is I can repair it cheaply or free & sell my old Dell Precision M6500 to make up the cost and have a solid upgrade at the end of the day!

If the hinges and the case are more damaged that the only solution is to change it all, even if you stick it will not last long, my personal experience :D
Super glue and tissue, tissue will become hard and solid like a wood if you give them super glue.
Note: Please use safety for your eye's
I'm glad I found this video, because I have the exact same laptop and wasn't too sure if it was worth selling it and getting a new one or upgrading it. I think I will do the latter!
I don't know why I got a recommendation in Pakistan, but I do like your channel.Keep it up.
Nice work! as always!
Hey i like to install win 10 on my new ssd
My doubt is ..my lap came with pre-installed win 10 . So does it require product key when installing win 10 on ssd
Wow, big support man!
Thank you bro :D
hi, Nice video, is amazing!.. thanks a lots, please can You tell me if this model could support a M.2 disk? i'm the video i saw a port that looks like a PCIE
I love your videos Andrew, you always make me profilactic and cleening my laptop
Have you thought about including Cinebench, Blender, and/or 3DMark tests to your videos? I think it would be interesting to see some synthetic benchmarks.
Soon ur gonna hit million subscribers..
Big support man 🙏🤟
Thank you bro :D
Andrew: Restoration
Psivewri: Collection
I love to see how you fix damaged laptops!
Excellent keep it up dear Andrew
There's also place for a msata SSD on the motherboard itself.
Love your videos😍😍😍😍😍 i have been using youtube since last 5 years and i swear you are the first one whom video i am comenting🤗🤗🤗🤗 love from pakistan😘
Thank you. I can t see the second ssd in your labtop can you show me please
Hi bro, This laptop has space for 2 HDD/SSD, during the video i use it one by one because one of the disk cables is missing, i order it but it didn't arrive on time when i do the video
@@ComputersAndTechAndAndrew thank you my friend. I wish if you can make a video for hp Compaq Presario cq61.
I’m telling you right now, NO ONE can restore my laptop in one piece.
I'm guessing it's a MacBook Air because those things probably take several spells to open the case
Why did you not consider adding an mSATA SSD? The motherboard has a slot for it! Love your videos.
You always inspire me and others
Nice video as always.....
Waiting for your next video 🥰

I have an exact same laptop and I upgraded the solid drive, I wonder is possible to upgrade the Graphic Card on this model as well? Thanks
no, in laptops discrete graphics cards are soldered to the motherboard.
I have hp envy 15 series witout DVD Drive. I already upgraded RAM to 16GB, installed a 256GB mini Sata SSD. I do not have additional DISC DRIVE

This hp laptop looks like the free 3d model that I’ve found in lot’s of 3d model websites
My hopes is I can repair it cheaply or free & sell my old Dell Precision M6500 to make up the cost and have a solid upgrade at the end of the day!
if i had this i will be using it as my daily driver :P
ThosePixelsTho they are great laptops
