Cheng Teoh When I was in 2nd grade, I found a full cart full of 2009 White Polycarbonate MacBooks. A large banner over it was labeled Goodwill. I asked about them, I was told they would be donated, a few weeks later, I found some in the trash. I didn’t take any though, because I was young.

I've always been a massive tech person, and my school knew I was smart, so they made me strip help 30 dell sff towers and wouldn't let me keep anything. Teacher also told me I didn't need to remove the CPU(As she pointed as the PSU). I was stuffing my pockets with 2GB DDR3 modules and i3's lmfaooo

Public schools usually don't let anyone have their old computers because technically they're government property. That didn't stop me from taking a Macintosh SE/30 right out of the dumpster.

The amount of waste here is shameful. There are so many kids in Australia that can't afford a laptop but so many good ones are just tossed into landfill. This video pleases me know end. I think you're a super cool guy for doing this. Cheers Andrew

Watching this makes me proud of taking care of my MacBooks as a student
I guess they learned that giving a 1000$ machine to students isn’t the right thing and now everyone gets the chromebooks.
@@BrianMui That's just waste of money even if apple gives discounts to schools. Chromebooks and their terminal do enough to teach basic school stuff even if they want to give some basics of coding to kids.

I really enjoy your videos Psivewri. I don't have the patience or Dexterity to do much laptop repair(especially Apple notebooks), but seeing you restore all these old Macs was very satisfying!
well your a bit late to the party - just jokin around. I'm picking up an 11" 2013 Macbook Air tomorrow for 240 Canadain with a magsafe 2 to usb c cord, anker brick, and a thunderbolt 2 to hdmi :D

I am a big fan of yours from the Philippines. I am Jerico Alba, a 2nd Year Mass Communication student and I watch how you restore PCs and other devices using your iconic eucalyptus oil and your skills in restoration of PC components (e.g. the laptop from 1990s, and repairing many Macbooks).
However, you told from one of your videos that you have so many laptops that you have restored and you have no idea of where and who to give it to? And have you mentioned that it can be sent to viewers?
I am one of your greatest fans since I subscribed you when you still have less than 100K subscribers, and I love sending likes to your videos. I have also recommended you to my friends and luckily, they are now an avid fan of yours.
I also learned a lot of things in restoring a PC and laptop. However, the profits I earn from fixing them only benefits to our daily livelihood, and I still struggle for online classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, for I only rent a laptop to use, just to pursue my education.
I hope you can notice my message and be one of the lucky fans that will be able to receive a free restored MacBook :( Moreover, the video was uploaded in September 15, which is my birthday.

I remember when my school were giving away a lot of Quad Core i5 Laptop's, not the best but still good enough, around 300 of them....
Me and my friend took about 12 of them with us, we did get permision to have ALL of them but they ended up just taking them to a tip in the end (if I remember rightly) which is a huge shame... most of them worked fine and would have been awesome to give to a school that can't afford tech or even give them away to children who need a laptop at home, especialy in 2020.
this was 4 years ago though.
That doesn't make sense to me. These i5s from 10 years ago are still selling for £100+ on ebay over here in the UK. Surely, the school could make some money by at least selling them all to a third party for a bulk price.
@@Retrohertz That's what I thought, I am in the UK too, They said they were giving a few away but from what I saw, they were all scrapped.
I mean one laptop could sell for around £50-100, multiply that by about 300 and you have a decent some of money.

@@Retrohertz here in Germany where I live some schools don't even own their computers, but have some other company who handles their stuff. I have heard they change computers every three years or so and they have to be destroyed as they aren't allowed to sell them or give them away. I think there was an elementary school and they had desktops with i3s that had been used for a total of 80 hours.

These 2014 Macbook Airs have really nice construction and are super light. Too bad they have huge bezels. I also have a problem with mine that causes light orange "hotspots" on the screen. Doesn't make it unusable though.

Can only say true to students treating PC with no care.
Worked in an IT department in the County Hall (Big building where the Mayor also were), and I repaired the all the school county PC (Around 10k all in all).
And those kids either downloaded sketchy stuff or did damage it in weird ways. :P
If i had an school laptop, it probably would be returned in better condition than before if it wasn't new

I can't imagine the amount of material thrown in the landfill! Although they are a little obsolete, they are nonetheless functional according to the use of each, they can be restored! luckily there are people like you !

Oh yeah. The Victoria lockdown. We have to deal with Stage 3 lockdown while Melbourne has to deal with Stage 4 lockdown. I also have to deal with the border regions, so I'm not even allowed to leave the border region either unfortunately. I've also gotten into fixing laptops thanks to you! :D

3:00 We were on a vacation with my girlfriend last year, and the luggage (already cracked before) was completely obliterated after going through the airport. It was held together only by clean wrap we put over it - more a bag, than a case, at that point. Before going home I've used A LOT of adhesive tape - on the inside and outside of the bag. And it survived the trip back! Even stayed together in one piece. I worship packing tape as a deity now.

I have a Macbook Air 11 Inch from 2013 when I was in Year 4 and it still works perfectly, apart from the battery draining quickly.

Try holding the power key then plugging in the charger, some MacBooks like to not turn on unless you do that, Huge Jeffrey’s has experienced this before and figured it out

Laptop restoration videos are quite satisfying, I wouldn’t mind an hour long video though.
I wish I could stumble onto free macbooks like this any advice on how to get stuff like that were it doesnt work but needs some tlc to work?

Also, even though I don't use Apple products, it's heartbreaking of how some of those laptops were so misused, and to think they are school issued, it is mind boggling. If I had one of these when I was younger, I would keep it very clean, because it would be my personal computer and the first ever laptop I could call mine was some outdated Acer that I had to put Kubuntu in to make it work, and even then it eventually died out beyond my powers.
I've been in the same boat. The parents had the option to pay for their students to hire a laptop from my school, but I already had my own that did well enough throughout my high school life and I treated well. That being said, if my parents ever did go ahead with hiring one, I'd be treating it like it's worth a million dollars because it's still someone else's property that I need to look after. It astounds and disgusts me how some students treated these poor Macbooks.

Same here, I used a Core 2 Duo Vaio until 2 years ago. It's still in pretty good condition, but the workloads of university (SolidWorks & similar) are too much for it so it had to be retired.
I think someone's first computer should always be a crappy one, so they appreciate the upgrade when it comes...

I have been wanting to Do something similar im in toowoomba QLD and wondered whats the best way to go about getting these sorts of deals from school or where do i go to find these such deals
Majority of government schools in QLD have to send the laptops back, I know of schools on the Sunshine Coast that send theirs back to Brisbane after there life. If you search “ex government laptops” you might be able to find some, also some of the laptops are listed on a website called “grays online” and they auction off ex government devices. Majority of them get auctioned off or recycled.
My high school used MacBook Airs as well. Other than a few dents on the sides, mine turned out okay.

most times a backlight issue is on the motherboard itself especially if you have corrosion issues, the more voltage ran through a connector, the more easy it will corrode. the backlight pin on the lcd connector is often the first to corrode and cause a no backlight issue. easy to repair with flux an new solder
